The matcha was around the $7 mark with a milk substitution and lacked flavor, so I would probably go for a coffee next time. read more

We had the lavender and caramel lattes--both delicious. Our coffees came out quickly even though the shop was packed. We came on a Saturday afternoon and there happened to be live music in the front. Overall it was a was a lively, cozy experience. We'll be back! Update: We came back a week later and were just as happy. Apparently there is live music every Saturday afternoon. This time we ate lunch; we had carrot ginger soup with focaccia, Greek salad, and a veggie quesadilla. Ordered via DoorDash and I am so mad that I wasted $46+ on this place! They have some nerve calling this "avocado toast" & charging $16.50 for it! Smallest piece of "toast" (wasn't even toasted btw) with the tiniest egg I've seen but even worse was that there was no actual avocado! After taking a couple bites with zero taste of avocado I moved the spring mix aside to see there was NO avocado or avocado mash at all on the bread (see pic). Instead it was just a mix of diced tomato & cucumber & onion mixed with a tiny bit of fake guac-like sauce that tasted like a cup of water had been mixed in (nope can't even call it guac). I don't mind spending money on good avocado toast but no one can call this avocado toast. Talk about ripping off your customers. Thank goodness I ordered the "original bagel" ($13.75!) as well or I would've been completely starving, but even with that they were so stingy that there was the thinnest layer of cream cheese possible. Also I ordered a hot Peppermint Mocha ($6.75) and instead they sent me an iced latte! If you're going to charge so much at least provide some quality food. I'm being generous even giving 2 stars. My husband and I come to this cafe every Sunday as our dog is welcomed and the food is typically good and staff is always welcoming. Today we came in and a new employee named Lisa was neurotic and highly unprofessional. This location always has dog treats , water bowls, and other dogs on premises- i believe once there has been an actual sign exclaiming that "dogs are welcome". Today , Lisa passively aggressively told my husband and I that "dogs are not welcomed and next time we should not bring him in". My husband kindly let her know that we have actually met the owner before and he never said anything and we have been coming here for a year with our dog with no issues. She then exclaimed that "if they get inspected they will get in trouble". Not only was her tone passive aggressive and unprofessional, she was wrong, but also totally disregarded another woman who had a dog (who was much larger than our dog) who was sitting at another table. We had a confrontation and I took everything to go. It's very disappointing that a staff member would treat a regular customer like this. We will not be returning thanks to Lisa. read more

The cafe's ambience has lots of plants and gives off a vintage vibe - totally my style. I swung by with two of my friends on a weekend for brunch, unsure if it was expected to be a slower day, but there was only one employee working the front and one working the back. We had a party of 7 so I understand long waits but it was way longer than I expected, and even worse most of our food was cold, specifically the bagels. I stopped in to grab some coffees and the staff here were super friendly and helpful. I ordered a Nitro Cold Brew for me and a Iced Chai Latte for X. Both were very good and reasonably priced. I called back into the store a few hours later to inquire about a missing item and the barista offered to take down my information in case they found it at closing time. They were the only place to offer to do this for me, so I'm super grateful. read more

From the breakfast menu I had a sesame bagel with scallion cream cheese which also had a bit of dill, what a good idea! I much preferred it to other bagel options in the heights. This café was super cute, my sister and I were at the surgery center about two blocks away and we ran into this café and were instantly drawn by the vintage design and adorable food/coffee options. As soon as you walk in you order towards your left. They ask you if it is to stay or to go where if you decide to stay, you may have a seat and they bring you your order. The service was very nice, there are a lot of stool to sit by the wall, a couch towards the back and about 7 different seats that sit two per table. It's small, comfortable and cute! They accept cash & cards and have a gender neutral bathroom. Also, it seems like the go to for workers lunch breaks! The service was very kind :) I came with my sister; who equally loved it; We ordered: Sunny Side Up Avocado Smash $14.50, I thought it was good! I like my avocado smash with lemon which they don't put so I did add some of my own, Chicken Pesto Sandwich $11.50, it was so good!! Both come with a side of chips, we also ordered a Hot Lavender Latte & Chai Tea Latte, not sure of the price but they were at least $5, they were also very good! The total for these four times were $37 and change before tip! They serve free lemon water and there is a table as soon as you walk in towards the right with a self serve table that has napkins, salt, sugar, etc. & "dirty dish" section where you place your well, dirty dishes when your done. This is a generous 4 stars, added star for great customer service. Food and coffee themselves are at a standard 3 stars with very little creativity and basic needs met for the gentrified latte. I've ordered sandwiches and salads here, baked goods like croissants, and have had iced Chai and iced lattes as well as nutella latte. I'm rating for scarcity sake and convenience. They have San pelligrino, salads to go if you have a long work day, want a sweet nutella something? Here you go. Full disclosure: I've worked for incredible and popular coffeeshops in Chicago and love coffee not just as a past time, but as a ritual and a history. This neighborhood has been yearning for a coffeeshop, specifically on this stretch of Newark. The interior design is a hodgepodge -- darker than I anticipated with curation of silly hip animals mixed with black and white historical photography, tufted leather, red metal industrial seating. The seating is comfortable and table space is ample. You're greeted by a friendly owner who chats up patrons upon entrance and is quite kind. The downfall? The coffee is just okay. The curation falls short. They have homemade donuts but the rest of the cakes and baked goods are from where? Bought at a mainstream grocery store? Cost Co? Balthazar? At hipster locations these details are crucial. There's a lack of gluten free dessert options too. I asked for an iced latte with nutella and was told that wasn't possible. It's possible. You mix nutella with a shot of hot milk, then ice it with your shot of espresso, and add more milk. Speaking of milks, there are great options and substitutes here -- oak and almond to name a few. The extra polished awareness of coffee isn't there. $5.50 a latte and $14.50 for avocado mash with sunny egg is unrealistic when the boutique coffeeshop on palisade has a far more inventive menu(roasted sweet potato, lentils, roasted veggies, & chimichurri for $12) with cheaper iced drinks. A Greek salad that's mostly iceberg lettuce without any switching it up or grape leaves felt again like a reach and overpriced at $12. It tasted nice, but wasn't imaginative. Various coffeeshops in Brooklyn that double as quirky florists have roasted beet or grilled chicken salads, in-house made gluten free pastry, can ask for that $5 latte but actually don't. Damn, spaces in grove st. such as Lackawanna don't. I don't think Cafe Peanut can either. The service is topnotch and the menu is standard base for components and taste but nothing stands out, food isn't necessarily unique. The ambiance is sweet and totally comfortable place for after school studying or a nice meeting with a friend, which this neighborhood needs. Overall, 3 stars with crossed fingers and hopes for improvement. read more
