I stopped in here this morning because I had a minute before a meeting and I was literally parked right outside. The guy was friendly, the place was clean. I got a couple of loaves of bread and a chocolate bread. Let me say, this is the best bread I've had in a long time, I knew I had to make a sandwich with it. PERFECT sandwich bread. I cooked up some sausage, potatoes l, & onions (I'm from Elizabeth,) excellent, excellent sandwich bread. Perfectly soft and moist without being mushy. This Italian bakery is nestled in a residential area and might be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. This place is small; standing room only. It is also cash only. However, this place probably has the best breakfast sandwich you can get in Jersey City simply because of the bread, which is made on site. The bread is just outstanding. I'm not sure if they don't usually have bacon or if it was just today. I got ham egg and cheese on a roll instead. However you can get the usual array of Italian subs as well as hot sandwiches. They also have some calzones and pepperoni rolls as well as some sweeter breads like cinnamon raisin. 10/10 will come back to try their other non breakfast subs etc. read more

Just another 5 star review for this awesome lowkey local bakery in JC. No parking but street parking was pretty easy. Small interior, and no indoor seating. Everything looked delicious and was out on display. I got the pepperoni roll and it was my favorite (so good I forgot to get pics) and the cinnamon roll was delicious as well! The rolls were room temp, and they were still really good - but they were even better when I brought them home and warmed them up in the oven. The prices are SO good for very decent sized rolls. We got a pepperoni and cheese roll (kind of like a calzone but better), ricotta pastry and chocolate roll, and all three came out to $11 and the sizes were generous. Second Street Bakery does not skimp on the ingredients, and the pastries were field with pepperoni, ricotta and chocolate - everything was evenly distributed so every bite you took was perfect. Was there yesterday. I'm going back. Maybe even today. My order - mini pizza, roast beef and mozzarella sandwich and a cinnamon roll. Ratings: Mini Pizza - 4/5 this is not a typical pizzeria style pizza to be clear. This is their fresh homemade bread with sauce and fresh mozzarella. Flavor is excellent. Tangy sauce with delicious creamy mozzarella. This is no Portnoy style pizza though, which to be clear, is the type of pie I like. This mini pie has lots of flop. The dough is soft and thick. But it's also surprisingly light and airy. End of the day, I'm likely to buy a mini pie every time I go there. That's how much I enjoyed it. Roast beef and mozzarella sandwich- 5/5 top two in my life - possibly ranked #1. Soft hoagie roll (don't think it's their own but I could be wrong), sliced marinated roast beef, plenty of creamy mozzarella and the kicker, brown gravy. That last part, nearly my entire life, I've shunned. Brown gravy.... C'mon. Lame... but no, it is the key to this sandwich. Rich, salty, beefy, umami, flavorful as anything. The only downside, if forced, is they don't give you a cup to take home. And not because they don't give you enough in the sandwich. They do. I'm just greedy. The competition? Ai fiori - there they serve au jus which to my snobby tastes, I used to give superiority over "brown gravy." But honestly, not so... at least when it comes to this sandwich. Cinnamon roll - 3/5 love the bread, nice cinnamon flavor. Not sure what it is. Maybe a little too much butter for me. Kids gulped it down though. Agree/disagree? Let me know what you think. Note: this place is a hole in the wall and they only take cash. The only reason I hadn't gone earlier is last time I tried I didn't have cash and then forgot about it. Right next to Antique...I swear ya'll related cuz I go in there too and drop $20 on carbs like it ain't no thing. From what I've gathered, getting there early is the move as they quickly run out of fresh breads and other menu items. I ordered a hot pastrami and Swiss sandwich as well as a hot roast beef w/ mutz and gravy. $6 sandwiches! Unreal value. The sandwiches were incredible. Old school tiny cash only Italian deli comparable to the best Italian delis in Hoboken. I waited in a 5 person, 20 minute line on a Friday at lunchtime. One guy was running the whole place taking 1 order and preparing it before helping the next person. Everything is baked on premises. I got the regular sized meatball parm sub ($7.50) which was thick and about 9 inches. The meatballs were dense and delicious. The sauce was a little sweet but very good. The cheese was not Hoboken-tier but still delicious. The bread is phenomenal, comparable to Antique. It is dense, firm, and chewy. I got a baguette of it ($2.50). I also got chocolate bread ($3.00). It looked like a 5 square inch roll with chocolate swirled into it. It had firm, dry, crumbly chocolate parts that I didn't like, but the inside was absolutely heavenly with creamy sugary sweet chocolate filling. I would return to all of these, and I would try the chicken cutlet. One of the best delis I've been to. read more

Perhaps if the second son opens a bakery, it'll be the "Second Straight Bakery." A miracle on Second Street would be if this place actually ever has cinnamon rolls when I go in. I've been twice now, and no roll yet. I'll have to come back to try their famous cinnamon roll among other things. I came at lunchtime and waited quite a long time only to find out that they were out of everything. The woman was really nice about it though and she gave me a pretty good Stromboli thing with a meatball. I didn't love it and I'd really like to try their famous cinnamon roll and other Specialties before I properly weigh in on this place but until then I will give it a neutral four star rating. Hard to utter any other word but WOW! Tried second street bakery for the first time on a Sunday in Feb. I walked in around noon and they were closing around 1:30pm so there was a solid crowd waiting to pick up catered orders for the Super Bowl or pick up smaller sandwich orders to go. It's a tiny place that exudes authenticity. Pretty sure the infrastructure inside hasn't changed in 50 years (in a good way)!! The line moved really quickly and I was in and out within 15-20min. What struck me was that the owners (a mom and son were working) knew a lot of the customers by name and were still very sweet to the ones that they didn't know. It's hard to find places nowadays where owners treat you like family, but that's exactly what they do here. Now to the food...I had seen pictures online of both hot and cold sandwiches that looked amazing so we tried one of each. I ordered a large meatball part sub and a large prosciutto, mozz, roasted peppers, and mushrooms. The meatballs were literally to die for. The cold sandwich had so much flavor as well. Both had high quality/straight from Italy ingredients. What really made these sandwiches stand out was the bread. The loaves are baked fresh daily and it really makes a difference. Bread had a little crunch to the outside but was soft on the inside. One of the best pieces of Italian bread I've ever had in my life. I went in with the intention of only getting sandwiches, but then everyone who ordered before me was getting specialty rolls as well. You could get pepperoni, chicken, sausage and eggplant. I got 3 eggplant rolls as part of an appetizer course for the Super Bowl. These were a crowd pleaser!! There isn't a spot to eat inside and it's cash only FYI. It's so reasonably priced given the large portions. I paid $20.50 with two enormous sandwiches and 3 eggplant rolls. Just amazing! Am looking at you, Cookie DO in the West Village. I've been eating that sh*t, raw eggs and all, for years and have lived to tell about it. What I'm saying is, bring on Cinnamon Rolls instead! Now back to that Cinnamon Bread. I honestly have no words to express how much I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this! It was jam-packed with cinnamony, buttery, sugary goodness and I think that's what made it so stunning to me. Most Cinnamon Bread teases you with just a hint of filling, but this... This was direct and to the point. Nothing coy about it. The bread component was good, too, but honestly, it mostly served as a vehicle to help me get this heavenly filling in my mouth. I *think* a loaf runs a mere $2(!). Said loaf isn't huge, but it's enough to enjoy with a couple deserving loved ones over the course of a day or two. Also grabbed what I'd describe as the Italian equivalent of a Chinese Hot Dog Bun to toss in the kid's lunchbox.
