The place seems to peg itself as being Eastern European, and tends to draw that crowd, but their menu boasts Grecian style food. They serve paninis (Yum), crepes, Grecian salads, Souvlaki, Loukaniko, Greek yogurt and more. Nice seating, pool tables and a bar. I've had their paninis a few times and they make a mean over-priced smoothie. I've been here on a whim to meet some friends at night. It had a nice lounge-feel to it. My friend and I were looking for a place where one could get some decent grub, booze it up, and lounge in an outdoor patio to bask in the sunshine's glow. Cafe Mistiko was the spot we chose due to proximity and it having all the elements that we were looking for. When we walked in we were presented with a very dark dining room. Granted it was noon and most of the customers were sitting outside, it was still a bit dreary to walk into and didn't exude any hospitality. My friend and i were both surprised that the menu was as extensive as it was and that most of the meals were under $10. I ordered a bloody mary and blackened tuna caesar wrap with a side of fries. My friend ordered a corona and chocolate banana crepes. The tuna wrap was sadly underwhelming. The menu promised blackened yellow fin tuna cooked medium rare, and when my wraps arrived, i noted that they were more medium well to well. It also lacked any hint of that lovely bright red color which made me question the freshness of the fish. The tuna looked kinda of opaque and more questionable than anything. The fries were well seasoned and crisp. My bloody mary was good but i should have ordered it spicy because the mix was a bit bland. My friend's crepes, presentation wise, looked stellar. The crepes were also very delicious, i mean how can one mess up anything with chocolate and bananas? On the down side, the crepe itself was hard in some areas and looked more like a large tortilla rather than something that was freshly made from a batter. This was disappointing. The decor itself is very trendy, and this place attracts many eastern european patrons, so don't be alarmed by the err.."exuberance" of the clientele.... (hey, i'm russian, so yeah i said it mwaha). The bar is pretty extensive in terms of liquor variety and there are also several pool tables. I used to come to Mistico few years ago when it just opened and it was the only lounge European type of cafe with crowd, lotsa drinks options, etc.. Me and many of my friends used to really like it. However, the last few times it has been a real dissapointment. Owners became cheap and somewhat rude. My best friend ordered a salad and it was a half of the portion it usede to be. When she asked for some more vegetables, the main manager kept arguing with her and refused to do anything about it. When I went there for lunch and asked to substitute chicken on a salad with octapus, I was charged for a full salad with chicken ($9) PLUS a whole entire octopus appetizer (another $9). So in that chicken salad which didnt even have any totatoes but basically lettuce, onion, pepper and cheese, with octopus on top I paid $18... When I complained the owner offered to take a $1 off... as if in that very poor chopped salad chicken was only $1... the other $8 were obviously the onions, peppers and lettuce... Just disspointing to see how service and food quality level has degraded... And obviously the new "customer retention" attitude is coming from management themselves. read more

As a Greek, I can tell you that this place reminds me somewhat of cafes in Athens. What I like most about the place is the diversity of the menu. The menu is not like restaurants in Greektown. I recommend the Loukaniko (greek sausage), the dip platter (greek dips) as starters. For the main meal, I recommend their specials of the day as well as the regular Greek salad, and salmon sandwich. I dont know why I like it, maybe its too much like the mother Russia, but a bit classier and they have nutella crepes (which you should order). There is pool, but Ive only come here with friends for some late night snacks. They are open late, have comfy chairs and calamari. Also, crepes and coffees are quite good. I have come here quite a few times and enjoyed it for the most part. The food was always good, the drinks were great, and the portions were normal to large. The last time I was there I ordered a Souvlake Pita Wrap with French Fries. It tasted amazing and the portion was quite large. Everything was great until we reached the end of the night when our waitress seemed to rush us out of there. She continued to check-in on us and clear off the plates quickly. I came here to watch the world cup and our group was sooo impressed with this place. The patio is awesome and you could actually watch the soccer game from outside. There were a lot of people smoking, but there was enough of a breeze that I never minded. I think I've ordered nearly everything on the menu at this point. Wife and I decided to try this place out since we had a Restaurant.com coupon AND it is only about 6 blocks away. It is in a strip mall that also has a place called Shree Vaibhav, a wonderful Indian take out restaurant. The first thing we noticed was that there were several tables OUTSIDE the restaurant where people were smoking, HEAVILY! When we walked in, the entire place REEKED from the stench of cigarettes because the place had ALL the patio doors wide open thus allowing the cigarette smoke to waft all through the restaurant. We ordered beers and burgers on a Friday night. Our waitress was nice, pretty fast (I think she was the only one waiting tables that night) and was helpful. The beers were cold, the food was very good, and not too hot either. The food was presented nicely, too. The environment left something to be desired, though. The air smelled pretty bad, and there were several people smoking in the patio area. Although they closed the door behind them, there were enough times where the door was opened for the smell of cigarette smoke to leak into the restaurant. The lighting was lacking, as well. I could read my menu since it was still daytime outside, and there are plenty of windows close to where we were seated, but not a lot of overhead lighting. I didn't do anything wrong, yet he grabbed my arm, pushed me against the wall and started calling me a "worthless piece of ----" and that he was "sick of babysitting." and that he "never wants to see my face again." generally making me feel small and worthless. Living in BG for years now, I was influenced by an acquaintance that exclaimed "You are Russian, and you haven't been there?!!" to actually go there and check it out, Sometimes nostalgia hits home, and I have to check out a Russian place or two around my house. So, off to Mistiko hubby and I went. There some were awesome Baltika beer canopies, and I thought that you can't go wrong with a place that has Baltika canopies outside. But boy was I wrong. After walking into a dimly lit enormous space, we were seated at a table by an Eastern Euro waitress that had a facial expression of a London beefeater, which is...completely devoid of any expression. After trying to read the menu in the dark, I stumbled upon bruschetta, which I love. You can't fuck up a bruschetta, can you? yes, you can, and Mistiko managed to do just that. I wasnt sure that it was bruschetta when I bit into a hard piece of white bread with huge chunks of raw garlic on it. It looked more like those frozen garlic breads that you find at a frozen food section at a gas station than a bruschetta, and cost way more than it shoud've. Hubby got a chicken sandwich, and it was nothing to write home about. The place itself could have ALOT more potential, be it not so dark in there, with terrible uncomfortable chairs at the tables, and dull bland food and waitstaff. The clientele was mostly barely out of diapers "mafia" wannabes from Ukraine with their barely pubescent girlfriends in UGGS and sparkly parkas, some out of place older people that attempted to play pool in the dark, and a couple of business looking middleaged men that were ogling the sparkly parka clad females. I've eaten here twice when visiting the area over the past 2 years. This most recent time I had dinner here. The food has always been excellent and is priced reasonable. The staff is lacking though. They seem not to care at all, service is slow, and they do not check to see if you need anything or need refills. The restaurant was not busy either. read more

Avoid this place like the plague. We just moved to the area and thought it looked like an interesting place to stop by dinner. Big mistake! The place was so dark you cannot read the menus. Literally! We needed to whip out our cell phones to read it. Never been in a darker place. The decor is a weird blend of euro trash punk, sports bar and Arabian cafe and none of it blends together. Cigarette smoke wafted in from the connected outside area (two feet from the entrance as well) which opens right to the inside tables (there has to be some violation of the IL no-smoking law here) and the air reeked. It is as if they hired three architects to design the place and none of them knew what the other was planning. But one could easily get past that part if the service was good and on this point they failed horribly. The waitstaff was cold and blank, like they were flown in from a Russian gulag. Our waitress rolled her eyes at my fiance's simply request to change the greek salad. We asked for bread and was told no - only comes with meal (how hard is to bring it out in the beginning if I requested this?). Strike one. We ordered a greek potatoes appetizer but it arrived with the meal and the waitress played it off by stating everyone orders it with the meal. I am glad that everyone else likes it with their meal but I ordered it as an APPETIZER (which by the way is where it is listed on the menu) so what the hell do I care how other people like it? Strike 2. I ordered the chicken pasta and I got soluvaka instead. She dropped the meal on the table so fast I could not even say something and then she ran off (the place was not busy at all - what is the rush). So I just ate it (i was starving) as we wanted to get the hell out of the place. Two minutes later she comes back and says, whoops I gave you the wrong meal. No s**t but by then it was too late. Excuses were provided but come on there is no excuse. Strike 3. Food was OK - nothing to write home about. Worst experience I have had dining in a long time. A miserable place for families, couples on a date, or if you just wanted to stop by for a nice drink and a chat. If you watch the Jersey Shore and love the show then maybe you are their target client base - everyone else will be really disappointed with this place. Much better choices out there. read more

I work across the street and come in to meet my friends for a late dinner here sometimes. I know the bouncer, he is very nice and always friendly. The drinks are very good. I've tried many of the items on the menu and I do agree with Gina, the meat is usually dry and the panini's are average in my opinion. But I do enjoy the Salad's. Although the place is very popular with the Easter European crowed it has quite a few nice pool tables many tv's and offers a person a verity of different beverages and eats that is not limited to the "traditional" stuff served in you average run of the mill sports bar. In beers i recommend trying the Baltica beer for a test of some Russian beer. Side warning portions on the menu are relatively large i made a mistake of ordering an appetizer and a blitz and could not finish all the food that was served. read more

Place is awesome and the servers are a hit or miss at times. Plus most of the patrons are European descent which is nice to hangout with your own crowd.
