We tried this restaurant for our ladies lunch on 6/2/26 and were pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was attentive and very helpful. The atmosphere of the restaurant is bright and cheerful with artists pictures on the walls which are also for sale. The quiche and salad combination was a winner. Cafe Metro in Denville is a place I've had bookmarked for quite a while as somewhere I need to get to. I've also had friends recommend it, so I was very happy that my wife and I had an opportunity to have dinner there last night. This is a relatively small restaurant right in the heart of Denville with indoor and outdoor seating. On a Wednesday night it was relatively quiet and we didn't need a reservation. The menu is really varied with lots of different options, many on the healthy side. We started off by sharing an appetizer of Chicken Lemongrass Dumplings. These were delicious with a nice spice to them. For entrees, my wife had the chicken and eggplant and I had almond encrusted salmon. Both were very good, if I had to order again, I would have chosen my wife's dish instead. That said, the salmon served with mashed potatoes and spinach was still very good. Prices are very reasonable. Parking is easy with a lot nearby. Denville is one of my favorite towns and Cafe Metro will be a place I'll be coming back to! read more

From a few years pre-covid and due to health issues, we have not been to Cafe Metro who we went to on an ir- regular basis always very pleased with the food, service and ample portions for a fair price. Unable to there get there before their early closing. We ordered takeout tonight. We were ever so pleased that the food tasted as good as we remembered it, the portions were generous, and the cost was very reasonable. We had an appetizer and entree from the special menu and an appetizer and two entrees from their regular menu for four of us. Everything was delicious and there was much left over. We had the steamed dumplings with dipping sauce, and a special appetizer that was a long pepper with chicken sausage. Both were delicious but not sure how hot the pepper was so my son steered me away. We also had the vegan lo mein with tofu, chicken fresca and shrimp adriatica, again, extremely tasty and filled with many different vegetables with different tastes and perfectly prepared. To feed four for two benjamins all in these days with such quality, taste and quantity is extremely rare. I am now going to eat in when possible because the only problem I had was we had to bring it home in freezing temperature. It would have been even better much warmer. I gave this spot two stars because the food was good. When we walked in, we were "greeted" by irritated staff and asked if we had a reservation. We didn't, but there were plenty of open tables. Every staff member was walking around with irritated looks on their faces. The server put down water glasses. One had lipstick on it (not ours). My clients picked this spot for lunch. I decided to get the vegetable stir fry. When I arrived I told the nice server that I was picking up, she told me they were packing it. Another lady came out and told me it will be a little more time so I sat and waited. It took about another 10 to 15 minutes. I dropped off the food and when I got in I ate. The stir fry was very filling but it was just ok in taste. I had to add a little hot sauce and it needed a little season salt but it wasn't bad, it was just ok. We had my daughter's baby shower here. The upstairs room is tastefully decorated. We could arrive the night before to decorate and the room was ours for the day of the shower. Communication and planning were excellent and Jeanne was very flexible with our requests. We were able to bring our own wine and the food was excellent and portions were very generous. Stopped in tonight for an early dinner. We haven't been to Cafe' Metro in years. We started with the wings and calamari both were very good. The Wasabi Ranch with the wings was really good. The calamari wasn't fried it over a bed of vegetables and was very good as well. Dinner consisted of four entrées 1st up grilled salmon over a bed of spinach which was on top of garlic mashed potatoes. 2nd was the shrimp risotto. 3rd Ravioli Parm, which is a pretty large serving. 4th and final wich is the best for last, I had an entrée off of the specials menu. It was called surf and turf Ravioli, braised short rib ravioli in a white cream sauce with large shrimp on top. Let me tell you something about this one it hit on all points from appearance, smell, and taste. The service was great as well they were busy however they did swing by and check on us frequently but not overbearing. What has happened to Cafe Metro?!? Very disappointing. I became a loyal patron ages ago, when it first opened. I have since moved away, but stopped by for dinner a couple of weeks ago when I happened to be in the area. I ordered what has always been my favorite dish -- vegetable stir fry with tempeh. The veg stir fry used to be a dish bursting with flavor. This dish was virtually flavorless. Though the menu description cites "garden fresh vegetables", the stir fry contained mainly cabbage with a few florets of broccoli. The tempeh used to be tasty, chewy and slightly crunchy. This tempeh looked, felt and tasted like it had been sautéed. And lastly, though the menu states the stir fry is served over "organic brown rice", the rice was white. So sad. read more

For dinner I tried the cauliflower steak which was more than a steak but an entire small cauliflower. It was served with kale and Had quite a bit of garlic so just Incase you don't care for garlic. Walked in and ordered a Cafe Vegetarian pizza to-go at around 4PM. Pizza was good once I got it and would at least recommend the pizza as far as the food is concerned but did not have a good experience as far as the service. When I first walked in, no one was at the entry area; after a bit saw someone who gave me a menu and decided to order the Cafe Vegetarian pizza off it. When I went to order, a different person told me I had the wrong menu and I would need to order from another menu; that menu also had the Cafe Vegetarian pizza on it but at a more expensive price...likely lunch vs. dinner menu since it was right after 4PM. Was told order should be done in 20 minutes, so went to the Diamond Spring Brewing Company and got a beer there while waiting (now that is a place I would recommend). After 20 minutes went back to pick up the pizza, needed to wait a bit to be helped and was eventually told that the pizza hadn't been started due to some sort of error and that I would have to wait another 20 minutes...was not offered any form of compensation for the order taking twice as long. Finally got the pizza over 45 minutes after I ordered it in person. So the summary of my experience is that I had to wait over 45 minutes for a take-out pizza that I was told would take 20 minutes and that was more expensive than on the initial menu that I was given. read more

Cafe Metro was a treasure finding, I was looking for a place to eat, and well here is what I did enjoy Homemade style food. I never though I will enjoy a grilled chicken with peanut butter on it, with steamed broccoli and healthy brown rice. A bit spicy but interesting. Grilled Chicken Martini Served sliced in a bowl with plenty of light cream sauce, with good quantities of penne pasta and prosciutto & sweet peas. For dessert homemade Tiramisu yumm!!! It was so delicious that it complemented my creamy doble espresso ! Have to go back to try the other menu items . Oh my just awful. Our waitress attended us in a rather fly by sort of manner but it was the sheer contempt for decent food that came out of the kitchen that was just insulting. I order a pasta dish that came on fettuccini but when it arrived it was on a short tube pasta like a tortiglioni. We could be fussy and argue that every shape has a purpose and fits with different sauces etc. we are no where near that level of consideration at Cafe Metro. When the waitress dropped it off without explanation I asked about it. She said they were out of fettuccini. In what world would you just replace a long pasta with a short pasta without checking either diner first? To her credit she quickly offered to replace it. A weird situation but apparently she would address it. But what came back was a straight up middle finger to me the dinner. The chicken that was on my original order was chopped for some reason and placed on a new batch of pasta that was basically sauced with water with some capers in it. Gross. read more

Not sure what happened. I ate here before and had a nice salmon dinner. Today I ordered vegetable lo mein and it was cooked improperly. It was difficult to eat...so I politely ate a few tentative bites and twirled my food around. I asked for soy sauce to see if I could salvage the meal and they didn't have any soy sauce. Instead, I was given Teryaki sauce which , sadly, made the dish much worse. My wife ordered a pasta dish called Shrimp Adriatica. The Shrimp Adriatica had almost no shrimp in it...we found four small shrimp in a good sized pasta bowl. The pasta was well done ( just the way she likes it) but the dish itself was not seasoned well and watery. I ordered tea and was never offered a refill during the meal. ( have not ever had this happen before) Our waitress seemed overwhelmed and we saw her three times during our dinner to deliver the teryaki sauce and two offerings of good tasting, slightly burnt bread. There was no salt and pepper on the table so we were unable to add seasoning to our dishes and we couldn't catch our waitresses attention at this point in the meal. We also ordered an appetizer dumpling that was very good but extremely small and not worth the $16 dollar expense. I am guessing this may have been an off night for these folks. Overall, horrible food tonight and distracted service. Perhaps the talented folks called in sick today. read more

Not a local, was visiting with my daughter who had never been here but heard it was good, and oh boy was she right!! Highly recommend this place. A very comprehensive menu- something for everyone-vegan and meat eaters alike. I had an almond encrusted salmon that was unbelievable!! My husband had the maple pork chop and loved it. Massive portions! I have lunch for the next two days now :) I ordered through DoorDash so I didn't get a feel for the inside of the restaurant however, everything was so fresh! Ordered delivery from this establishment in which I ordered the vegetable lo mein and steamed edamame dumplings. Both were excellent. Food arrived promptly while hot and the noodles had a nice heat. This is the kind of place that I would just pass without notice until my friend invited me for lunch. It's not very crowded during a weekday, but it's holiday week. I wanted to try their reuben but was sold out, so I got the kobe beef burger that was served with chips and a salad. The burger was cooked perfectly at medium rare because the juices were flowing all over. They have a spicy ketchup which was not needed and the ham was also out of place. The brioche bun did a good job of sopping up the juices. The side salad is made of green lead lettuce, carrots and mushrooms with a thick Italian dressing. My friend ordered the vegan carrot cake, and it was really moist, tender and the the cream cheese frosting was good; you would not know that the cake was vegan. The artwork on the wall was interesting and I guess there are particular clientele that are interested in those. Definitely worth checking out. read more

The service was great, the lighting and atmosphere was great for our lunch crowd, and the food I ordered was top notch. (I got the salmon) . My mom got the shrimp risotto which had so much potential but they ruined it by pouring a load of thyme or rosemary or some spice that is very distinct in the dish. It was overpowering. It bums me out to say - Good food. Terrible service. I'd give the food 4 stars, honestly. But the service was so bad I couldn't even enjoy my dinner, it put me in such a bad mood. Our waiter barely checked on us, or even looked at us. Husband and I ordered diet cokes, they never came out. Had to flag down the waiter (cause he never looked our way) for our drinks when we FINALLY saw him a good 30 minutes after he had taken our order. It looked like there were 3 other servers going back and forth in our section. Those tables (that sat after us) got their food and drinks before us. We were actually about to just get up and leave! (a little slow) but very friendly and knowledgeable. The split pea soup was delicious and the hummus veggie wrap was satisfying. However, the place is filthy!!!! The wall I sat next to was splattered with something. The paint is chipped in places and it just looks like they don't wipe down there walls...ever! The chair rail on the wall shared with me a finger full of dust in a 3" swipe. The menu was nasty and falling a part. The ceiling fan had a layer of dust that would easily fall down on patrons if turned on. My mind always goes to "I wonder if the kitchen is this dirty?" I think it's safe to say that my third visit to Cafe Metro was the last straw. We dined here a couple of months ago, and found the meal to be just OK and the service to be incredibly slow. So slow, that we were pretty much just forgotten about. And no, the restaurant is never so crowded that there is a fair excuse for this. Since we weren't in a rush it was OK, but the real kicker was when the waiter took my phone to jot down my Yelp deal information at the end of the night and dropped it. I mean, he literally dropped my iPhone and it bounced across the table. Yet we opted to come here again since we were with friends who are vegan. To be fair, the bread was delicious and the meals were OK. The deliciousness of the bread is very important since you will eat two baskets of it while waiting forever for your meal. I wasn't thrilled with my meal (FYI the Martini's Crazy Chicken is kinda gray), but 3 out of 4 people at our table were satisfied at the end of the night. Refills on soft drinks aren't free, so don't bother and just drink water. Or, be like me and just don't go back here. read more
