I'm no foodie or food snob, but when food is this bad I must speak out. We were referred here by friends who raved about this restaurant. I found nothing good to report. 1. Appetizer: Polenta Fritta ($14). 2 small spongy pieces of a nasty tasting concoction. The mushrooms on top were over-seasoned. Neither of us could stand this. 2. Salad: Caesar. ($12). This is not a Caesar salad. Yes, the menu says Green Garlic Dressing, but I expected a Caesar hint. Instead, there was an awful dressing. Additionally, the croutons were hard as rocks. 3. Main Course: Halibut ($44). We have never had worse fish anywhere. It was terribly dry and mostly tasteless (due to being dry). I'm actually glad the portion was small because I would not have eaten the rest. Had we not been with friends, we would have sent the meal back. Given the prices, our expectations were high. First off the cocktails were well made and the focasia bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar they bring out was great. We both ordered a dish with claims and pasta. Cafe Med is above average Italian cuisine, considering we are in the Eugene market. The people in the kitchen are actually yelling at one another in Italiano, so that already puts it in the top couple percent in the county for authenticity. After splendid cocktails, we had the scallops, salada tricolore and chicken piccata. All were tasty but none amazing. The scallops are perfectly cooked in a mysterious white leek sauce but it is overall a bit watery and slightly tasteless if we can pick nits. The salad had lovely ingredients but was on the small side and a tad too much balsamic for our tastes - it was a bit overwhelming and needed bites of their lovely sponge-focaccia to cut the vinegar. The chicken was cooked to perfection, moist and tender but the caper sauce was too lemony for us. We had to alternate with bites of delicious mashed potato to get it down. Overall, the place is small and cute, the service good, and the cooking intentional, which is almost unheard of in Eugene. This is a top 10 "date night" place to go. If they pay just a bit more attention to the seasoning it could be great. If the chef can't taste how zesty it all is they should let someone else taste maybe. We'll be back! read more

The vibe is a bit like a Mediterranean beach house I suppose. The service is friendly and helpful. The kind of place where they have the complex specials memorized. You might want to make a reservation, but at 5:30pm on a Sunday night we had no trouble getting a table for two. You can sit outside on a shady patio, or inside. Acoustic ceiling features helped dampen noise. It's a nice place for a romantic dinner. Foodwise, I really enjoyed my Bistecca, mashed potatoes and asparagus. I have been here twice. The first time was very anti-climactic. The food was not great (I had the pork) and we had to send my husband's dish back because it was not prepared as it was supposed to have been. (Steak was overdone.) The second time we went recently, my food was definitely better (halibut), however my father-in-law's dish was disappointing. He had ordered the fettuccine Alfredo and they were very stingy on the sauce. We had to ask for more. The staff are very nice and attentive, but for the price you pay, the dining experience should be better. Not much to look at from the outside, and located in a sort of little alley behind a gas station but the vibe inside is like eating in a cozy cute shack. The food was good - Squid ink noodles came w/ generous amount of seafood with baby octopus, squid & shrimp perfectly cooked. They also added some salmon roe in the noodles giving salty little bursts to your bites which combined nicely w/ the lemon juice. But beware if you're on a first date, the ink will leave your teeth all lookin like gollum chowin raw fish. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly medium rare and very tender & served w/ mashed potato & a tasty mix of roasted veggies. The price was quite reasonable, filet mignon was $55 which seemed cheap compared to other places. I reviewed this restaurant maybe a couple years ago now. I felt it was time for a new one. I had friends in town from afar and decided to take them out for a birthday dinner. Two of us ordered the same thing - it was the orchiette puglesi. I may have spelled that incorrectly, but basically it's these little ear shaped pastas with nice spicy sausage pieces of sundried tomatoes, and broccoli rabe (like broccolini but slightly bitter) in a delightful light sauce, probably butter based. The pasta was cooked to my perfection, al dente. Both my friend and myself ate every bite. You'll see the photo attached. The other person in our party had the meatball appetizer and a Caesar salad. He was very pleased with both. So you may ask, why only four stars? Two reasons. The first being our red Cabernet Sauvignon wine was rather chilly. Both of us prefer our red wine at room temperature. It still was a delicious wine. The other reason was because one of our desserts, a pistachio ice cream with a of caramelized top, was very, very frozen and icy. The tiramisu, on the other hand and a chocolate mousse were very delightful. Service was excellent and attentive. We enjoyed our evening tremendously and it is certainly on the list of my favorite restaurants. Another issue is the difficulty in parking. The spaces are so very close together if you can even find one. Despite being there on a Thursday evening, even the street parking was full. I don't think the restaurant can do very much about that so it's really not fair to criticize them. I guess it's just to put it in your awareness of parking can be difficult. read more

Where do I even start. Camille our waitress had every recommendation on point. I especially asked for her go to and she advised on the ravioli with lobster and crab and a hint of lemon. Unfortunately, I had a disappointing experience here. The decor and ambiance are nice--this restaurant appears to be upscale Italian. However, the server warned us that the old chef had left back to Italy and would not be returning, so they had a new chef. The calamari was not crispy or seasoned. My bolognese was good, but that is hard to mess up, and it was a small portion. The chicken piccata was roasted instead of pan fried with breading, which I thought was unusual. My husband and I tried Cafe Med for the first time last night. There are 2 small dining spaces (reservations essential) that are beautifully candlelit and cozy. I was excited to try a seasonal ravioli or gnocchi but was disappointed when the waitperson said that they were not house-made but imported. Apparently none of the pasta is housemade which was surprising to me for a place with such a great reputation and higher prices. I decided on the squid ink pasta with seafood--a stunning looking dish when it arrived! The "ink" in this dish is intense so be warned---your mouth will be (temporarily) black! The shrimp and squid were perfectly cooked but I thought the dish could have used more of the spicy tomato sauce. The salmon roe added a fruity, crunchy texture on top. My husband had the hanger steak, medium rare, with Yukon gold mashed potatoes, rosemary, and a green sauce of some sort. He said it was superb. He also commented that the Caesar salad was the best he's ever eaten. Overall we had a wonderful experience at Cafe Med, but --as a dedicated home cook myself---I'm personally more interested in restaurants that create more in-house, such as Osteria DOP. read more

My friends and I sat at the bar here last night and let me just tell you, it was a front to back 5 star experience. They've changed their menu recently and this was my first time trying it, they've definitely upgraded the food in taste and presentation! Starting off with delicious complementary focaccia bread (an upgrade from the average baguette in my opinion) with balsamic and olive oil. Next was the Caesar salad, which is not your typical Caesar salad, it was elevated and honestly...the best one I've ever had. I couldn't stop going in for another bite. Then came the main event- the Halibut, it was tender & buttery, resting in a delectable Parmesan foam. We finished off with their crème brûlée and tiramisu, which were beautifully sweet. Every bite of this meal was savored. Hats off to the chefs, seriously impressive. Not to mention the service! All the staff is so friendly and attentive, they made sure every one of us was happy with our experience. The drinks were very good too! Especially of note, was their espresso martini. Again, the taste was above average. This restaurant may seem pricey to some, but trust me it's worth the splurge. You're paying for the utmost quality in all aspects of a dining experience. They have a lovely ambiance that will whisk you away. You will feel loved and cared for no matter who you are or what the occasion is. This has been my fav restaurant in Eugene since it opened. Sadly, their head chef left due to illness. My most recent experience was beyond disappointing. The food was mediocre and the portions are much smaller, while the prices haven't changed. I'm all for creativity, but not at the expense of quality and taste. I was stunned to have a veg side that included canned mushrooms in a $55 entree. Even the dessert was sub par. I hope they return to their previous business model, as it was spot on. I don't want to see Cafe Med fail, but at this rate it may. That would be tragic. read more

Came to cafe med tonight for Mother's Day dinner and was very happy with the experience! The inside of this restaurant is super cute. Blue and white decor with string lights and rustic art. There's an outdoor covered patio as well as indoor seating. The menu had a wide selection of options, not just pasta. I loved the focaccia bread that came in the bread basket. So salty and oily. Delicious. For Mother's Day they gave mothers the option of a Bellini or mimosa on the house which I thought was so sweet! My family really appreciated that gesture. The food was super flavorful and tasted very high quality. Portions are large and filling. Service was great. Food came out fast and we felt very welcome and accommodated. I think we have a favorite new spot for a romantic dinner. The place has two small rooms - packed, bustling and loud, but in an exciting way. Everyone is smiling and happy and having a great time. We feel attractive in the perfect soft light. The food is exceptional. My husband had the tagliatelle Bolognese. It was delicious. Bolognese usually tastes of tomato and not much else. This had a lot of savory flavor and was so good. The proprietress caught us on the way out. She was smiling and in the zone. She asked how it was. Ok this is my new first choice for Italian. Lasagna is usually the first dish I try when there is a new Italian place because I always try to see if I can get lasagna that is as good as the lasagna that my friend's Italian mother taught me to make in Italy. Well, here it is! In Eugene too! The family running it and the chef are from Italy so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. My husband got the farfalle with salmon. He enjoyed it a lot, the pasta was perfectly al dente and the vodka sauce compliments the salmon well! When we asked if the pasta was made in house we were told the pasta is made in Italy and flash frozen and sent to Eugene for the restaurant, how cool! They bring you focaccia bread and balsamic and oil before the meal that was also delicious. The service was also great! We were not disappointed with anything. The space is small inside and probably seats about 24 total plus a few bar seats. They have an additional sunroom type outdoorish seating area that probably seats another 12-15 more. So reservations are definitely a good idea especially as more people discover this gem. The interior has a good ambiance it feels nice but not so fancy that you'd need to dress up a ton. It does get loud in there when it is full so they could probably use some sound dampening to help with the noise. This place is also located about a stones throw from another local Italian place so it will be interesting to see if they affect each other's business or not! I'm looking forward to coming back to try more pasta as well as the classic pinsa made with with '00' flour. 10/10 recommend checking it out! read more

My partner and I went here for date night and enjoyed the food and vibe of this place. I got the papperdelle and it was fantastic. The mushrooms tasted fresh and the pasta was perfectly cooked. The bread that they gave was also delicious and we had to be careful not to fill up on it before we got our food. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. We had a table outside in the corner. It was nice and private which we liked, but it was a bit loud from the building next door - I think it was their air conditioning unit that was making all the noise. Nothing Cafe Med can do about it, just something to note if you're sensitive to sounds like that. I also strongly recommend making a reservation especially if you plan on going at peak times because they fill up quickly and this is not food you want to miss out on. It was fairly pricey to dine here, which is fine for a date night or as a treat every once in a while, but I can't afford to make a habit of going here regularly. The parking situation can also be difficult because of how small their lot is and how many businesses are around them. Just another reason to go during the quiet times when nobody else is eating dinner though! read more

We started with the best Caesar salad we could imagine along with an order of the excellent meatball appetizer in a magnificent red sauce. We had three in our party. Each of us had a different homemade pasta for a main course. Wow! Fantastic and wonderfully unique. Next time I will try the halibut or pork scaloppine. We split tiramisu for desert. A great choice. I don't do reviews on Yelp often but this time I felt I had no choice, as Cafe Med deserves to have Eugenians from all parts of town know just how superb it is. I had an incredible meal, from service to atmosphere, menu options, taste and presentation. The wait staff were kind and attentive but not over bearing. The menu had a huge number of gluten-free and other food sensitive options. I sat underneath a lit up tree that was making soft squeaking noises at me as I tasted incredible flavors and enjoyed the calm vibe. I felt like I was on a 2 hour Italian vacation.
