I have been to the other two locations and loved it. It was my first time in this one and I wasn't disappointed! Same quality and excellent service as the other locations. It is amazing how food in this restaurant is so surprisingly delicious. The flavors are always exotic and balanced. I had the kelp noodles and loved it. It is a raw dish and the "noodles" are actually a kind of sea weed. It has a different texture, a little mushy but that didn't bother me at all because the flavor is amazing. It is a light dish though. Perfect if you are planning to have a dessert like me. For dessert I had the chocolate coconut pie and was blown away by the flavor. Could not believe it was vegan. When planning where to eat on my trip to Los Angeles I literally typed "macrobiotic bowl LA" and "best salads LA" into Google. Both of which brought me to find Cafe Gratitude! The cafe is so welcoming - not only with its atmosphere but also its employees. You can feel the health vibing through the cafe. Our waitress was an absolute delight. She explained how the menu worked which is really something different. Everything on the menu is name after an affirmation. At the top of the menu are the words "I AM" and then the meals and drinks are called "joyful" "love" or "gracious." So when you order you say "I am love." And then our waitress would affirm our order by saying "You are love." My mom and I left not only with full bellies from our delicious meal, but also with happy minds from a truly positive experience. I got the "I am gracious" and my mom got the "I am whole." Let me start by saying I am not a vegetarian. I eat meat...A LOT of it in fact. I love meat in all its glorious edible forms: a raw tartare, a medium rare steak, a gooey cheeseburger...and on and on. I am one of those people who think just about everything tastes better with bacon in it (even cocktails and ice cream!). That said, as I am food-aholic, I can also appreciate good vegetarian food. Cafe Gratittude is quite simply the best vegetarian restaurant I have been to in the States. Saying the food great is vegetarian or vegan is a disservice. Just like saying "She looks good for her age" is kind of a backhanded compliment. Screw that. I don't care how old Raquel Welch and Michelle Pfeiffer are...they are simply hot! And Cafe G is just damn good...no matter what you compare it to. Not all is perfect. I cannot stand the menu and all the silly names of dishes. Everything is named something like "I am wholesome" or "I am fulfilled." I am annoyed that I have no damn clue what a dish is by reading it's name. I am frustrated that it takes 30 minutes to read and comprehend the menu because of the names. "I am hopeful" that they will move on from these cheesy and annoying naming conventions. I had the opportunity to check out Cafe Gratitude a week ago when meeting a friend for brunch. I admit I was hesitant to check this place out because I'm not too keen on vegan/overly healthy restaurants. But based off of reviews from other meat lovers, I took the plunge. I'm happy I did. Everything I tried was awesome. My friend got some sort of chai smoothie which was divine. I think next time I'll order that to-go. For my main dish, I wanted to pick a more popular dish that came highly recommended so I got the I Am Grateful bowl. Yummy!! We stopped by Café Gratitude in Venice after hearing great things about them via Social Media. This location has a parking garage and the restaurant offers validation. The set up is very open with intimate seating on the patio and inside. We sat along the wall which is the closest to a booth option. Our server was gracious and professional. My husband had the "I AM Trusting" barbeque tempeh scramble and I had the " I AM Gracious" Mediterranean salad; we split the "I AM Thriving" Broccoli soup as well as the "I AM Lovely" Strawberry Peach Cobbler. We both enjoyed our meal; the food was tasty and satisfying but it was blow you away delicious and that is what I was hoping for. For example here's what my salad consisted of: shredded radicchio, sundried tomato pistachio pesto, butternut squash, olives, crumbled cashew feta, chickpeas, capers, brazil nut parmesan, golden balsamic reduction, sprouted probiotic brown rice or quinoa. I figured between the cashew feta and the balsamic reduction there would be some zingy but there was not. It was mildly flavorful the soup was the best tasting and most flavorful part of our meal. So we ordered two things, the coconut vanilla icecream, this was so yummy I wanted two scoops, and then we got the strawberry short bread? I have been vegan for 5 years and eat out often and have tried many of the offerings from LA's most loved vegan eateries. This place does not measure up. This has been one of my favorite meals out so far in Los Angeles, and I've been to more than just a handful of restaurants here thus far. The food here is unique, fresh, and so unbelievably tasty. Pricey, but you honestly are paying the premium for incredible food novelty and freshness in taste. I love that the philosophy of the restaurant carries through all the way to how the servers interact with the guests (e.g. our server asked us a philosophizing question at the end of taking our order) as well as the names of the dishes. The "I AM" phrases were all over the wall and the decor was just simplistic and inspiring. It made me enjoy the food all the more. It was hard for my parents and I to choose which dishes to order for the table, but we settled upon the following: -THE FORTIFIED VEGGIE BOWL with cilantro pumpkin seed pesto. This dish was simplistic but still so wonderfully crafted and executed. Though the oil was a bit overpowering, the veggies were fresh and the pesto was subtly delicious. If you're looking with something packed with flavor, this may not be the dish for you. But if you appreciate the subtleties of fresh vegetables and pesto, this is it! -THE HUMBLE INDIAN CURRY BOWL was my least favorite, just because I'm used to really flavorful Indian foods and ethnic flavors in general. This seemed like a watered down version of the ethnic Indian flavoring you would be used to in other curry foods. *We opted for a mix of brown rice and quinoa for both of our bowls and absolutely LOVED the taste and the texture. Would recommend doing the mix! -THE HEARTY RAW PIZZA was my favorite dish of the meal. I feel like no one could replicate the details of this dish, which made it really special in my books. The taste of the sauce was rich and memorable, and with the cheese... and the uniqueness and texture of the crust....mmm.... -BLISS CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE was some of the best dessert I've had. The pecan date crust was wonderfully crumbly and the cashew coconut mixed with the chocolate custard made for an amazing blend of textures and flavors. We recently dined at Cafe Gratitude with three friends who do not eat vegan. I was wondering how this would meet their expectations for plant based dining and, overall, it was a very good meal! We started with three nachos and two orders of buffalo cauliflower. The nachos were delicious but it was a small plate. The cauliflower was okay not the best I've ever had. For the main I had the taco flight (it was taco Tuesday). Of the three tacos my favourite was the mushroom taco. We also had the burger and a bowl - both were enjoyed by friends. Full Disclosure: I am not a vegetarian. I am not vegan. I enjoy eating things with faces. I am not particularly alt-anything, or New Age-y, or crunchy or granola. But I am open-minded. And my first visit to Cafe Gratitude blew my mind. And rewarded my tastebuds. I don't generally stumble into restaurants this far off my eaten path. But Lise (my highly evolved, yoga-doing, food writer friend from Boston) likes to take me to interesting eateries when in town. A couple of years ago, she gave me my first encounter with raw food. It was delicious, nutritious and fun. (That was at RAWvolution on Main St in SaMo - I heard they closed. Too bad.) Cafe Gratitude in Venice is on a nice stretch of Rose Avenue, with interesting neighbors just across the street. And it is perfect. Beautiful interior. Great service. An interesting, affirming menu (you'll see). And the food is gorgeously presented and outrageously delicious! We weren't aware of anything that we weren't eating. In other words, we didn't miss meat or dairy or things with faces. We were just delighted with the look and tastes and textures of the food. Our visit was over a month ago (my new year's resolution is to be more prompt in writing Yelp reviews) so I can't tell you what dishes we ordered. I would have no problem at all being blindfolded and just pointing at the menu to order. There are wraps and salads and bowls, oh my! But I can tell you we had the Key Lime Pie for dessert. I remember that because I'm not a big fan of Key Lime Pie. So believe me when I say you will be grateful for my recommendation to finish with Cafe Gratitude's Key Lime Pie. Can't wait to go back. And to visit CG's Larchmont and new Arts District locations. P.S. You'll want to wander across the street to browse Simon's Provisions, a charming craft beer and wine shop. My friend had the lasagna which was really a cold salad in lasagna form...very odd. One redeeming part of the meal was our drinks. As someone who follows a plant-based diet, I was pumped to hear about a restaurant focused on that lifestyle. When I first moved to LA 6 months ago, I couldn't stop hearing about this ~magical~ Cafe Gratitude, so I decided to check it out and see what the hype was about. The first time I visited, I was enamored by the interior decor. I loved the hip, chill vibe of the Venice location so I had high expectations for the food. I ordered the Mucho (Mexican) Bowl. When it came out, I was shocked by the portion size-- it was tiny!! I decided to suspend my judgements until I tasted the dish. Unfortunately, it wasn't great but it also wasn't terrible. I left CG hungry but willing to come back for another round. The next time I visited, I decided to try out Bountiful (their quinoa pasta). With this entree being a pasta dish, I thought it would be a larger serving than my bowl, but again, I was surprised to learn it was a tiny serving. I'm talking perhaps a tad larger than a palm-sized serving. For the price I'm paying, I'm expecting more than half a cup of pasta. The pasta was also undercooked and bland, so that meal was a big flop. After my second underwhelming experience at CG, I decided I needed some distance from it. Maybe I'm ordering the wrong things? Someone help a sister out. I really want to like it. I want to be a part of the CG clan, but with the small portion sizes and bland food, I can't convince myself to join the bandwagon.
