Arancini was good, cheesy. Wish it came with at least one more. I got the aglio e olio -- very good but a little too much oil for me, and could have been lighter on the salt. My friend (black female) and myself (puerto rican female) went to the restaurant with a couple hours left open. There were several seats open and some diners who clearly were having a lovely night. We were seated and honestly all issues happened then. I am not exaggerating when I say the minute a dish was dropped the servers were all trying to take the plates we were actively eating away. And not just asking, physically trying to remove them. The food was bland at best, overcooked at worst. Compared to the all white diners, we were the only table whose plates were being constantly removed and being asked if we would like the check. After only sitting for 30 minutes.. this was atrocious. Let me start off by saying this would've been an easy five star review, but the service that my group received the day we went in was less than ideal. Over our time dining here it seemed to take our server much longer than necessary to transition from each part of the meal. That being said I'm going to move on to how the food experience was. I've heard a lot of really great things about Café Giotto and had meals at their previous location as well- that being said I was really excited for the meal and wasn't let down! I came on a weekday afternoon for lunch with two friends and we couldn't stop gushing about how great each part of the meal was. We had a burrata appetizer followed by our own individual lunch meals and also ended with dessert (gelato) AND took some pastries home for later. When I say EVERYTHING was great- down to the table bread- I'm not lying. Check the specials board inside on the wall to the right of the counter as there tend to be a lot of tasty items. My recommendation is anything with mortadella! And the gelato is made in house so yeah. . Leave some room for sweets. Or have them before dinner because why not? Pick up some freshly made marinara on your way out. Perfect for that box of artisan pasta I know is in your cupboard. Sold in reusable ball jars this is some of the finest red sauce available at a reasonable price locally. The servers were all a bit... odd except for the young lady who was our main server since she was friendly and attentive. Not her fault the machine around her wasn't well oiled. The outdoor seating could use some bug repellants as well as more stable tables on the uneven sidewalk. Folks might argue that's what gives it "charm" but it's not charming when food and drink are falling off the table with awkward seating. One server even asked us to keep the glass bottle of water on the ground because the table was so tiny. Management needs to make an update there. There's plenty of al fresco seating as well as cozy indoor. They let you stay as long as you like. It can be pricey but is a good experience. I really enjoyed being there. Cute place, fast service. I ordered spaghetti Pomodoro- you have the option to choose what kind of pasta to match the sauce options. They brought complimentary bread with olive oil before the meal. The bread was very good quality, tasted fresh and I think they make it in house. It also looks like they bake a lot of great pastries in house. My meal arrived quickly and tasted great. This is real Italian style where the pasta is al denté, the tomatoes were very fresh. My only reason for giving this 4 stars instead of five is that the space is very small and kind of cramped. There were only 3 tables and for this kind of food, people want to dine in and not just take out. I'm guessing this is an economic decision as rent in Montclair is astronomical. Indoors, there are small tables but also counter seating around the perimeter. Definitely good usage of space and maximizing their space. The menu is simple but that means you know that they have perfected everything, especially the lasagna which comes in a meat or veggie option. They have delicious fresh bread and they are very generous about giving you as much as you want. There's a display case of pastries which all look yummy. But I decided to get their coconut cake which was worth every calorie. Even the whipped cream was amazing. Staff is sooooooo friendly. Everyone is professional and hospitable. The Pandoro component was like an uber fluffy, rich, eggy brioche, while the pastry cream summoned citrus flavors I couldn't quite pinpoint. And the dark chocolate glaze on top tied it all together. Everybody is so warm and welcoming! They are so sweet and generous with customers too! They gave me a bombolini con crema which is an Italian donut stuffed with pastry creme on the House. The last time I went they threw in an onion focaccia bread which was really nice of them! The guy that takes your order is really nice too and helpful. He will gladly go over the specials for dinner, desserts, and what house made gelato specials they have that day. So far I had the onion focaccia bread which was very good! The eggplant Parmesan appetizer was EXCELLENT, and I highly recommend you order it! Their red sauce is so flavorful and delicious!
