Eastern European focus and what I have had has been excellent. Recently I had the Cabbage Rolls (excellent) and my wife had the beef stroganoff (excellent too). We will be back. The service was attentive and fast. Actually the entrees came fast after the mixed beet salad. Ice tea was one of the best brews tasted yet (and I drink a lot of it). A True Taste of Home at Cafe Dacha Cafe Dacha is a wonderful haven for Eastern Europeans craving the taste of home. Every dish we ordered was clearly prepared with love and care. We started with unique drinks--my husband tried a new Ukrainian beer and was not disappointed, while I enjoyed a vodka soda with a delightful cherry twist. The borsch was full of rich, authentic flavor. We also had a long-standing craving for fried potatoes, which weren't on the menu, but the staff happily prepared them for us--an unexpected and much-appreciated gesture. The lamb kebab was incredibly tender, melting in the mouth with each bite. For dessert, I had planned to save part of my Napoleon cake for later, but we couldn't resist and ended up finishing it on the spot. It was perfectly crusty rather than moist--exactly how I love it and rarely find it prepared. The service was both quick and exceptionally friendly. Vareniki, pelmeni, salad olivye, chicken shashlik, beef tongue, and of course borscht...everything was perfect and was like me eating at my mom's from years past. Great service too! Eastern European cuisine has never been much better than from here. It includes plenty of Ukrainian specialties. Cafe Dacha is one of the best places in Highland Park for ethnic food. Good choices that are priced not too bad for the quality. The menu is kind of small but has a good variety of things. A charming atmosphere is inside but the patio is also cool. It specializes in Eastern European cuisine. The menu proudly has many Ukrainian options, including beer and food. It's only open for dinner. We came in and there was plenty of room. Beer list has lots of imports. It's about $8 for a bottle, but these are big ones. An Ukrainian beer they have is Lvivske 1715, in a bottle. This has notes of apricot, cereal, citrus, ginger, and rye grain. As for the food, we were limited in choices. We got the Vinegret. It's $13 for a big bowl. This basically is a salad made with beets, carrots, green onions, peas, pickles, and potatoes. Good stuff and the starches made it filling. The rest of the menu has meaty options. Good place for exploring some not so familiar cuisines. It has pretty okay prices for being a small place with good quality food. There's not many of the food items that aren't meat, but there's a few salads for vegetarians. read more

We went to celebrate. Family members birthday on a Sunday evening. We were a party of 6. Room was lovely and the service was great. We enjoyed all the foods from the two salads we ordered, the perogis, the goulash, beef stroganoff and especially the fried potatoes with garlic. We brought our own bottle of wine. A great evening. Favorites include: Beef Stroganoff - 5/5 - Love this over noodles Vareniki - 4/5 - these little potato dumplings are really good! Blintzes - 3/5 - these were okay, but my least favorite thing we tried. Honey cake - 5/5 - SO GOOD Napoleon - 5/5 - for me, this is my favorite dessert here, but more people at the table seemed to prefer the honey cake Cherry Vareniki - 4/5 - I also liked this a lot more than others did, and especially liked eating the leftovers for breakfast the next morning. Instead of a restaurant, I feel that Café Dacha is a banquet hall. Unfortunately, every time I visit, there is at least one super large and super loud party. So much so that you feel like you are intruding and you can barely hear your own friends, sitting a few inches from you. Since I do like the food, I have decided that the best course of action for me is to pick up the food to go - and that has been a great experience. They answer the phone promptly, the food is ready in a very short time, piping hot and packaged very well. Location and parking: In a corner spot in downtown HP, there is ample street parking. Wow! Really amazing place in the heart of Highland Park. The service was really nice, and the atmosphere was lovely. They even had a tv playing that fireplace loop video which was really nice and cozy. The food was really delicious, and I was very satisfied. I had never had the variety of pickled vegetables that they had, and it was pleasantly surprising! The pickled tomato was strong but good, and the pickled red cabbage was the best. Cafe Dacha is truly one of the best Russian/Eastern European restaurants I have ever visited. The restaurant is small, cozy and beautifully decorated. Everything we ordered was delicious -- the calamari was perfect, chicken tapaka was crispy, the goulash melted in your mouth. My Ukrainian mother in law gave the official stamp of approval to the Napoleon,too! Best of all, the menus are also in Russian and the staff spoke Russian. My husband's father and grandmother do not speak English, and it was such a treat for them to be able to feel totally comfortable at a restaurant. The staff was wonderful as well. Dined at Dacha with my Ukrainian friend Vlad. He knew the ropes so I followed his lead. Overall great place with a huge patio for nice weather nights. Being sub zero we dined inside and fortunately were only people there. We started with liver pâté appetizer. Delicious with a generous serving accompanied by homemade bread and garlic butter. I could have eaten just this for dinner. The Russians and Ukrainians love their liver pâté and I can see why. Second we shared some pretty Devine meat crepes which I hear are hard to come by but legit here. Fir the main course Vlad had the Beef Stroganoff which he said was the best he had ever had outside his hometown in Ukraine. I decided in the Chicken Tapaka, a half toasted poussin in a garlic butter. It sounds plain but it was anything but. I'm a huge chicken fan and it was simply divine. Roasted just right and seasoned only enough to release all the flavors of the roasted chicken. The skin was crispy while the meat was very moist. We finished it off with a few sweet cheese blintzes and a pretty healthy slice of sweet, sweet, sweet, Honey Cake. It was sweet while not overly sugary, there is a difference. All in all a great meal in a really inviting spot. A must do in patio summer. read more

Rolled into town to visit family on Sunday night. Dacha was able to seat our group of 7. The waiter was very patient explaining dishes for those of us new to Ukrainian food and politely repeated pronunciation for us to attempt to say (but totally butcher, sorry!). Everything we got was delicious. My picky teenager devoured the stuffed cabbage rolls. Husband said the lamb was very good. I loved the pickles, which our hosts recommended, and everyone at the table enjoyed the garlic potatoes. My husband got a cappuccino and the foam art was well done. On another note, the staff was able to fulfill a small special request and wouldn't even accept our offer of payment (we would have been more than happy to pay). Also, when my kid forgot his hat, they were able to find it for us to pick up. Overall, I'd definitely go to Dacha's again should we be in the area again and we understand why it's one of our hosts' favorite spots. read more

My wife and I ordered takeout from here last weekend. Got a couple orders of pierogi, chebureki and some grilled veggies. After a couple weeks of some really mediocre takeout (from other places), I was so happy with our food from Dacha! Everything was still piping hot when I got home and the food was clearly made to order. Pierogi were excellent, and each order came with a generous amount. Veggies had a perfect grilled taste.
