I have been patronizing Cafe Borgia since it opened in 1986 and the ambience and service are impeccable. On a recent visit, however, both of our pasta's (Alfredo and Angel Hair Pasta w/ Veggies) were in need of salt or some type of seasoning. My husband's just needed salt but mine was totally bland and tasteless. I also learned that the Grilled Vegetables, a long time offering has been removed from the menu. This, combined with the fact that a long-time favorite (Smoked Salmon Pasta in a Lemon Cream Sauce) was removed years ago, has been most disappointing and the restaurant no longer is of much interest to me. On the plus side, there are still some good appetizers and entrees and the portions are very generous, a major plus since I was able to take my entree home, add some additional vegetables and cheese, and season it w/ a variety of fresh herbs. But, if you want some of the best authentic Italian food anywhere, try Guiseppe's in Schererville, IN. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for about 30 years. Great food. I've tried every salad on the menu & love them all. The bruschetta is so delicious & fresh. Gnocci is tender with the flavorful vodka sauce. My husband had the ruby red trout. So good. The mashed potatoes & roasted vegetables were spot on too. Great service & stunning restaurant. This restaurant has a very nice atmosphere and vibe when you walk in. My siblings and I decided to take our parents there after church ; for my mom's birthday celebration. This was a couple of years ago when we went to this restaurant. Therefore, unfortunately, I have no pictures saved of the restaurant or the food that was ordered. I do remember that the drinks were delicious and the food was good. We had a party of about 15 family members and I do remember that we probably spent close to $1000 for our meal and drinks. So, I would say that this particular restaurant is a little pricey. The service that we received was really good. We met friends here for dinner last Friday night. The team welcomed us warmly, the food was amazing, and the atmosphere invited you to enjoy your time there. My party shared marinated olives and bread as appetizers. Portions were generous. Salad and pasta dishes were very good with great depth of flavor and texture. Now I remember why I don't come here. I ordered the July special the pork Parmesan over spaghetti, and it was very dry almost no sauce whatsoever. When I asked for a side of sauce, they told me it was gonna be five dollars more which I thought was ridiculous when the bill was near $100. The owner is very cheap. Went here for a family birthday dinner...food was good but not a good experience. We were a table of 12 that put up a $500 bill... The server was not attentive...UNTIL it was time to deliver the bill. Once the bill was put on the table he was "Johnny on the spot" trying to collect AND made sure to check the tip on the receipt BEFORE walking away from the table. This was a big put off...we felt rushed after the check was delivered AND he knew he put a mandatory gratuity on the bill...$75 tip...not sure what his beef was about. This is a beautiful deco restaurant. I love the outdoor seating and the lovely dining area. My husband and I ordered the fried calamari and bread for delicious appetizers. For our main course, we had the chicken Parmesan, which was excellent, and the shrimp and shells with asparagus, which was also very tasty. A glass of white wine complemented my meal. The staff was amiable, and our waiter checked on us frequently. I will return to try other items on the menu. read more

From the highway, you are not really sure if this is a restaurant or a hall so I was glad to find reviews. I has passed this place many times and we decided to finally give it a try. We went around to the back and there is a whole scene for the entrance with plenty of parking. They certainly needed it with the amount of cars there along with an additional lot where they had a sign directing you to it. When you walk in, it smells amazing. You are thinking Italian before you walk in and then you are in Italy! It is a large dining room and you are met with the kitchen and Host. We opted for bar seating and there were no tv's to my husbands horror :) The bartender and the staff there were efficient and friendly. We ordered our app of calamari to start. It was chewy and larger than we like. The tomato sauce that came with it was delicious though. We barely ate it and let the bartender know we did not care for it. Maybe in these times they are unable to comp or something. Next, I had the lasagna which was okay and it was fresh pasta. I was hoping it was the same sauce as the calamari but it tasted different. I also ordered a side of meatballs as I was under the impression the lasagna was meatless. they were okay but may have been worked too much as they were a little dense. I must have read the menu wrong. My husband had the salmon special which he cleaned his plate. Everything came out fast and hot which was good. We decided to gamble on the dessert of the month which was a panettoni with caramel sauce. I liked it but he was not a fan. He is used to to different kind of bread pudding dessert. Had lunch with a couple of friends on a Saturday. It's been about a year (or more) since I last ate there. To my surprise, it wasn't very crowded at all, but I chalked it up to people Christmas shopping instead of eating. First, I was surprised that they charged for the once complimentary bread and olive oil. I ordered the stuffed chicken breast and was disappointed with the texture of the meat. It was a bit rubbery and the cheese was on top of the chicken breast and overcooked. I expected something better for $26. Sitting at our table waiting for our appetizer we witnessed the owner at the bar drinking. Then when our meal came, my drink was spilled all over my expensive watch and my clothes. Then when I asked for the manager, the drunk woman owner came over. She did not apologize and asked what we wanted, as she was angry. When I asked for an incident report she gave me a card. Said she's not doing a thing and made fun of my wife. I explained to her, as a business owner she needs to stop drinking on the job. My wife was very upset about her comments and she did not offer any compensation to my ruined watch and clothes. Do not go there and waste your time and get your belongings ruined as the drunk women owner dressed as she's homeless, will not rectify their gross mistakes. I didn't ask for this tonight. I was recently working and staying in the Muenster, IN area and finally go to try Cafe Borgia! We sat at the bar and experienced exceptional service from Jen and her crew! We started with an appetizer of fried calamari which was very chewy and bland, that was the low point of the evening and things definitely got better from there. I ordered the stuffed chicken which came with broccoli and barely, it knocked my socks off.... 10/10!! My brother had the chicken parmigiana which was a massive portion, he said his meal was excellent as well. The restaurant itself was very clean, cozy, and well decorated. Kind of ruins the overall experience for me. The food is excellent, service is always great, and a pleasant atmosphere. But for some reason this really bugs me, I mean your paying accordingly. Friendly first contact. Accommodating hostess and server. Bread service, a free standard at any Italian restaurant I have visited is a charge. Oil and grated parm, a charge. The bread advertised as fresh was cold, hard, and a little over a silver dollar sized, presliced and stacked in a basket. I'm just used to free hot loaves with oil and parm experienced in area places like Pestos and Lucretia. I guess I am spoiled. Chicken parm was loved by 2 in the party. My Linguine PESCATORA was a sad blend of mushy bay scallops, rubbery calamari rings, and off putting clams in the shell. The garlic wine sauce was a watery blend of garlic and water without a hint of wine. Ordered the canollis for desert hoping to cleanse my palate of the pescatora but was sadly disappointed when the canolli shell turned out to be so hard and overbaked that even a rapping of my fork failed to shatter it. I guess I used to a softer version but I will say it was hard enough to scrape my palate. The filling was nice but the shell a definite let down. A footnote My 90 year old mother ordered a water because she likes to drink a flavored water. She mentioned that water was fine because she had her own mix to add. We were told that the management looked down on people bringing in powdered mixes fom outside the property. Its a 90 yo lady pulling a powder mix from her purse for crying out loud. The server said she wouldn't say anything but be discreet. Really? Whats the point of mentioning the rule? I just thought it was pointless. Anyway a mixed review from me earns a fair rating. With so many options down Calumet and the surrounding area I hope this place heeds their reviews as they have potential but are falling short at this point. read more

Been going here since it was small place in Lansing. I always get the same thing .. cannelloni. It is absolutely my favorite and the only place that makes it. Went yesterday for my birthday (which I had been looking forward to all week) to only find out they removed the cannelloni from the menu. I was sooo disappointed. I had the ravioli which was good but definitely didn't compare to the dish I loved so much. Upscale Italian restaurant. Expected a great experience. Went for lunch with 5 friends coming long distances without knowledge that they do not bill individually when there is a group. Everyone had large bills and had to ask for change, figure their bill included tip, the tax for each, and it ruined the luncheon. Came in for lunch which didn't matter because it appears they only have one menu. $22 for 6 Ravioli. Caprese salad was $9. A soda was served out of a can. Bread was $3. Not enough red sauce on the ravioli so we requested more. Waiter brought a small bowl of red sauce. When the bill came there was a $5 charge. My opinion is there are other Italian restaurants that are just as good with no extra fees. I won't be back and I am sure they are ok with that. read more

Stopped in today for a late lunch with my mom, Aunts, and cousin after they came to town to visit the antique mall. They asked for a cute, local place to eat and I had heard great things about Cafe Borgia. Immediately entering the parking lot we knew it was the right vibe for this group of older ladies. They loved the bathroom decor and the hand blown glass light figure in the main dining room. We started with a bread basket and oil and cheese which was great, and worth the extra charge. Everyone ordered a separate entree dish and all were wonderful, although my mother didn't love the stuffed chicken breast stuffing. The wait staff were exceptional as well.
