This review is only for the cocktails. They have a private parking lot and a very small bar. Less than 10 seats I think. There are probably another 15-20 tables scattered around the place. The drinks were excellent. The espresso martini was the girlfriend's favorite and she had a few. The service was spot on. The music was a tad loud but so were all the people talking. Will definitely come back to try the food and some more cocktails. It is located in the back of a strip mall which is odd but definitely worth the trip. read more

My wife and I went there to give it a shot. It is a nice cocktail bar. Everything was clean. The cocktails were amazing and so was the service. The food was also very good. I tried several cocktails off the menu and I was very surprised at how well the bar staff made drinks. My glass was never empty for a long and anything we wanted was taken care of. This place is super cute! My friend had been before and suggested we enjoy some cocktails and apps here for girls night. We walked in on a Saturday night around 7:30ish and were able to find 2 seats at the bar with no issue. Very chill atmosphere. The ambience was fantastic. A bit dark, but perfect for a relaxing night of drinks and good convo! I had the matcha match and holy water (both vodka based drinks) and they were delicious!!! Super smooth and mixed to perfection. For apps we had the flautas and the king crab dip. Both were so flavorful! And I'm not a flauta kind of girl....get those. Trust me. Overall I enjoyed myself and wouldn't mind coming back! PS. On a warm autumn day in October, my party arrived at this cozy lounge tucked away in a small shopping plaza. The vibe here was so nice and chill. We didn't feel like we were in Northwest Indiana (45 minutes outside of Chicago). Once we were seated we couldn't help but notice that the lounge music was set at a perfect volume to hold a conversation without shouting. No entrees, but the shareable plates were more than enough to suit a wide palate. I recommend the delightful parmesan fries and tasty flatbread that comes induced with a delectable honey sauce. Not enough good things to say about this restaurant. Starting with the atmosphere it is very relaxing and elegant. The craft drinks are made with much detail and attention that they are works of art. Last night was my first trip to Sips & Stones and unfortunately, it will probably be my last. I knew from the website the owners wanted this restaurant to be a little more "swanky" (hence the dress code and inflated prices) and it's cute. The music was way too loud to be played during the day (think club volume) and the waitresses had to yell over the music. STAFF/SERVICE: Our waitress was polite but certainly not warm at all. She didn't smile once. She also is half of the reason I don't want to return: our drinks would easily be fully empty for over 10 minutes before we'd see her again to ask if we needed anything else. Yes. We needed drinks. We went there to get drinks. There weren't a lot of people in the restaurant and we saw plenty of wait staff. I'm not sure why she was so reluctant to check on us. After we finished our "last" drink (which wasn't supposed to be our last drink), we waited 25 minutes for our waitress to return. That is insane. By then we decided it wasn't worth it to order another and we paid and left. FOOD: I went with a group of two other ladies: One of us does not eat red meat and the other two don't eat meat at all. We asked our waitress if we could order the charcuterie board without the meat. We did not ask them to reduce the price ($19). We did not ask for a substitution. We simply asked if we could have the cheeses, nuts, olives, and baguettes. They can save their meat for the next customers that want it instead of wasting it and throwing it away. The waitress said she'll have to ask. She returned about 15 minutes later and asked if she could take our order. I asked, "did you ask about the charcuterie board?" She responded by saying the kitchen will NOT make a board without the meat on it. They would prefer to throw that portion of food away instead of simply not putting it on our plate. I should note that this is a very common request and I've never been denied before, especially if I'm willing to pay the same price. What establishment wants to throw away food and money? Very odd. LAST THOUGHTS: I'm fine with them trying to be a more upscale place but loud music, fake flowers in REAL water on the tables (what?), unfriendly waitresses and stubborn kitchen staff aren't great ways to get customers to return. I'm okay dressing up but in this case, I'd rather wear jeans and go elsewhere with friendly waiters and a chef that thinks logically. I'm still baffled by the fact that they wouldn't simply leave one item off of a plate. read more

This place is in located in the back of a "hole in the wall" strip mall. Parking is not great. It is crowded because it is the only wine bar or like thereof in the St. John area. Went one time when it was suggested for a girls night. Upon walking in it was not only small and cramped, but very loud. We had a group of 5 and had to practically shout to hear one another. Drinks are overpriced and pours for wine are small. Food is average at best and again overpriced. Although servers were polite, they were understaffed and we had to wait awhile for our orders to come to our table. A few weeks later, I decided to give it another whirl and go again with a friend who came out to visit, but same circumstance. We ended up leaving after one drink because we couldn't really stand the noise and drove an extra 10 minutes to Crown Point where we found so many cute bars/restaurants with a wide variety of great food and drink (good pours I might add) and.....you can actually relax and enjoy the company you are with. So.....If you are in the St.John area, drive the extra few minutes to Crown Point and don't waste your $$ at this place. I would have given it 1 star but the staff does their best. read more

Went here last night while in town. This place is super cute inside. Love the décor. Waitstaff was great & very attentive. All of the food was delicious, although I have to agree with another reviewer, some of the spice needs to be majorly toned down. Don't get me wrong, I love spice, but for some of the dishes it definitely wasn't necessary. The meatballs are delicious, but way too spicy. The flatbread pizza also had way too much pepper on it. In both cases, the spice level took over and ruined what could have been two unbelievably amazing dishes. They were good, but overshadowed by the spice. As far as the wine selection, this definitely needs to be addressed. The wine list is pretty awful and needs to be changed. The wines chosen don't fit in with the rest of this place. They had only low end wines that frankly aren't any good if you're into wine like I am. Think all of the wines you see on the Target shelf... Menage a trois, Josh Cellars, Mezzacorona...that's what they had. Maybe they're not into wines as it sounds like they specialize in cocktails more, but they definitely need to bring in some better quality wines to appeal to their wine customers...or make it a BYOB if they don't want to change them. Came here for a date nite to be turned away due to an expired drivers license which had expired a few weeks prior. At 38 years old this is the last thing you think about with a hectic lifestyle.
