Delicious, authentic Mexican food! I ordered a chicken chimichanga, and it was very flavorful, with fresh guac! I asked for hotter salsa, and the waiter brought me some smoky salsa from the back, that had a nice kick! I lived close to Mexico, but haven't for a while now. At last a place that does authentic Mexican Food! So far I have tried the Huevos Rancheros and the Sopes and my plan is to slowely but surely make my way through the menu. They were both top notch. No ready made tortillas here, everything is homemade, and it shows. The owner Hugo took the time to have a chat with me while I waited (you dont get that in too many places anymore) and told me about the classes he gives. You only have to pay for the ingredients and then you get to feast on your results. As other reviews have noted, he is so passionate about his food, but its not just that, he really wants you to get involved and understand Mexican food and culture. So I went back and took 3 friends along with me and boys oh boys they were not disappointed. We asked Hugo if he would rustle up a few dishes for us on his recommendation and every bite was demolished. This is my first ever review on Yelp but after the cooking class I did last night, I was compelled to write one. The owner Hugo is such a lovely man who has palpable passion for his cooking and his heritage. He carefully talks you through all the techniques and history of the food you are preparing, making it both great fun and a learning experience. I was so excited after my experiences yesterday, that I cooked everything I learned for dinner for my family and -amazingly- Everything turned out just the same as last night. After reading all the rave reviews for this place here, I was a bit disappointed to be honest. Having made the trek to the other end of Dame st, we were hoping for something really authentic and spicy Mexican food. There was only one vegetarian burrito from what I could make out on the menu so I skipped it and went for the quesadilla and my friend went for the fajitas. The fajitas were your average fare you can get any restaurant and the quesadillas were fine, nothing special. I love beans and rice so I got them on the side but they had no kick. Was disappointed to find the overall meal bland. Maybe the burritos are better. Service was OK! Rarely that side of town, so not sure how often I'll be popping in. read more

Dublin is full of burrito bars and mediocre tex-mex, but if you want authentic Mexican food, no frills, this is the place to go. It is a small cafe, simply decorated with just a few tables. There are metallic paper banners hung from the ceiling and small paintings hung on the walls. It is all you really need. The food is prompt (not too prompt so that you know that it has not been sitting under a heat lamp all day). We the Juicy Pork Tacos and the Sopas with guacamole (a vegetarian option). We ordered a side of guacamole which came before our food with a healthy portion of chips. The chips were made in house, they are the thick kind of tortilla chips made to order by cutting corn tortillas into sections and deep frying them. They are amazing. So good they don't even need salt. The guacamole was the perfect balance of lime, salt, and cilantro. It had nice big chunks of tomato and finely diced onion as well. The Juicy Port Tacos were outstanding. Whatever sauce they use to marinate the meat should be bottled and sold in the shop. They were simple, served with just onion, lime, and cilantro, but so so good. The sopas are served on a thick corn patty, the beans were soft but not runny and the guacamole was portioned well. There was just a little bit of cheese and sour cream (they don't overdo the dairy which I like) and finally some lovely red salsa for a bit of a kick. It could have been spicer but I tend to like things extremely spicy. The owner, Hugo, is so welcoming and kind. He makes the restaurant feel like the kitchen in his own home. He is attentive, kind, and happy to help with anything at all. I am originally from Mississippi. I often make cornbread and find it hard to find thick grain cornmeal. My problem is now solved, Hugo sells it in shop along with a variety of peppers and other products. OH-and it won't break the budget! We will absolutely be going back. read more

It was 9:30 pm on my first day in Dublin when I decided I wanted a burrito (I'm very fond of them since my summer in the US). As I was looking at the menu outside the restaurant, the waiter saw me, came straight to the door and just put the "CLOSED" sign on, without aknowledging me at all. I thought it was incredibly rude and was completely stunned. People were still eating inside (just two couples) but he did not even bother TALKING to me or even making an eye contact ouf of politeness. Therefore i don't know anything about their food, but the establishment was a disappointment as it is not a way to treat a potential customer. This is just bad business. I attended a cooking lesson here lately, and enjoyed in tremendously. Hugo, the chef and owner, entertains and educates with a brief background on the origins and influences on Mexican food, including a brief explanation of where the name of each dish we're going to learn to make. Pico de gallo and various tortilla-type things were attempted and successfully made thanks to Hugo and his lovely assistants keeping a close eye on us. After we chopped, crushed, mixed, mashed and fried the various foodstuffs, Hugo gave it to his assistants to assemble and it came out beautifully presented. I was so proud of us... Of course the proof of the pudding is if you can make it at home, and when I tried the pico de gallo recipe at home, it turned out really well. I haven't had the courage to try the cornflour-based things though; Hugo made it look easy but I wasn't fooled! A thoroughly enjoyable evening and I'm delighted to have another simple recipe to add to my limited repetoire. Yum. read more

Visited based on Yelp reviews and was glad we did! Been craving some Mexican since we left the US and was happy to come across some authentic good stuff. My burrito was massive and delicious while my husband's quesadilla was equally good. Not the huge, fried, cheesy mass you can get elsewhere but filled with delicious meat and toppings. We got a free tamale with our order which I'm never a fan of but this was done right. The salsa was hot and the chips delish. Pretty decent value as well. Small cafe but very friendly service. As a Mexican I didnt think that I would be able to find a good Mexican restaurant, but to my surprise Café Azteca managed to exceed my expectations with freshly made meals every time and authentic ingredients. Fantastic little slice of Mexican heaven. We were slightly late and it was no issue at all and the staff in this family ran restaurant was extremly nice and helpful. Food is all prepared fresh with most amazing , tasty dishes that have to be on your bucket list! make sure that you order guacamole as its made fesh and to die for. One of the worst meals I've ever had in Dublin, one of the worst i've had anywhere for that matter. The rice within the burrito tasted like, and had the texture of boil in the bag rice, the chicken inside was cold, plain roasted chicken which had been pulled up and thrown in and the salsa within tasted shop bought. I dont thnk anything was made from scratch, and my girlfriend thought she heard the ping of the microwave while we were waiting for out food. We were both shocked about how awful it was. We found Azteca after arriving in the city and before checking in. We're Mexican and we usually avoid Mexican food in Europe because it's always a disappointment. Azteca, however, was fantastic and genuine. The sauces were great. And spicy The food tasted fresh and they had everything a homesick Mexican might crave. Although a bit skeptical about going to a Mexican restaurant not in the U.S., Mexico or South America, I decided to give it a go since the Yelp reviews were so good and suggested authentic Mexican fare could be had here. Although the very nice owner and staff were indeed Mexican, the ingredients and flavors did not have the tastiness that a good Mexican restaurant in the U.S. would have. That is not to say that the food was not good, just not delicious. Let me qualify that by saying that I live in Nashville where we have an overwhelming supply of bad Mexican food restaurants (staffed by Mexicans!) and only 4 good ones. My roots are in New Mexico and Arizona where the Mexican food is outstanding and the flavors are native to that area (chilies, cilantro, etc.). The food at Cafe Azteca was fresh and actually tasted good, just not what I consider authentic and certainly not delicious. I realize that saying that a Mexican cafe run by a Mexican owner is not authentic would potentially bring incredulous responses, but it actually can be true! So, again the food was fresh and not untasty, but the prices were high for the portions you received, particularly given the aforementioned lack of authentic flavor. I had a diet Coke brought to me in a can, which is not unusual in Europe (typically it is in a bottle, but the packaging means little to me). What did matter is that the can was not ice cold as it usually is the few times the packaging is not accompanied by a glass with a couple of ice cubes to keep it cold. When I asked for a glass with ice, they had to run out to a nearby business to bring back a container of ice. Also, given that we were the only customers in the restaurant (we came at 4:30, a really in between time), the food seemed to take a really long time to be brought to our table, even allowing time for freshly prepared food. read more
