Tuesday evening visit was disappointing. Despite very few guests service was slow. The food we ordered was good, especially fried seafood and onion rings. However one person ordered red beans which had an unpleasant odor and taste. He sent it back and the waitress acknowledged that she tasted it and it was indeed "off". While she took it off the bill she made no offer to compensate since he didn't want to order another entree at that point. Surely most restaurants would offer at least a dessert or something after serving spoiled food. read more

We ordered some of the best crab and broccoli soup you'll ever have along with an order of sweet potato hush puppies. OMG. It's the best comfort food on a cold or warm day. We recently had a shower here for my sister in the banquet room. The restaurant owner and staff were pleasant to work with throughout the arrangements, and they were also efficient and communicative. Special shoutout to our server, Katie, who took care of all 30 of us on the day of the event. It was a perfect setting and all of the food was top-notch. We all had a great time. A great little seafood restaurant literally hidden in the corner. My dad took my family to this place long ago and it's always been on my mind. Now older, i visit back and it's just as good. When i have a seafood or mainly gumbo craving, I make my way over to the restaurant, walking through the old wood doors and make myself comfortable. The restaurant is split into a large ball room for bigger parties, a bar, and a dining room for the regular. The staff is very nice and the food comes out relatively quickly. read more

This is our second trip to this location and I am planning on it being our last. We went with a group for a dinner meeting. The romm was set up and they had made them menu items for the group. Nice touch, but that is where the pluses stop. After 20 min, we managed to flag down our server to place a drink order. Another 15 minutes passed before we got drinks. My drink was not correct. I ordered an Absolute Lime and soda. I got vodka and soda. Then 10 min later, we had to track down our server to place an order. Here is where the fun starts, I ordered the seafood salad and my husband ordered the fish of the day special. Both items were on the menu board as you walk in. Our server said we couldn't deviate from the small menu they had developed for us. I explained that I did want any of the items in the limited menu. She said she would check with management and get back with us. She then took the orders for the rest of the group. And we never saw her again..... Food started coming out to our group 30 min after ordering....the meeting starts and 6 people next to us don't get served food. We track down the bartender, who it now seems is our server. She checks with the kitchen and finds out the order for the 6 folks next to us was not put in. Add to that no water refills ever came and no drink refills either. Talking to others in our group, we were lucky to not get food. Most didn't finish their plate or take to go boxes. Afterr the meeting, 6 of us went down the street to grab some food at another establishment. read more

I came here for a work Christmas luncheon. The food was great and the service was exceptional! I would recommend patronizing this place.

We went for lunch. As soon as we arrived we were seated and our waitress was soon to the table. My husband got the Hamburger steak lunch, my granddaughter ordered the crawfish pasta fettuccine and I had the blackened chicken Alfredo over angel hair. All of our lunch specials came with a salad and bread and we all loved the food. I had a Arnold Palmer to drink and I can't remember what drinks they ordered. I wished I had read the Yelp reviews on this place before my entire office crew decided to try it for lunch today! To begin, we had a party of 10 so I figured calling ahead would be a good idea. Well, it most certainly would have been if the phone number had actually worked. We showed up and the place maybe had 3 tables sat close to noon (should've known then that it wasn't good!). 11:30-group checks in. Server said they would set us up a table. 11:45 we were sat. Drink and food orders were taken at 11:55. Drinks passed around at 12:05. After having eaten almost a full basket of crackers because we were so hungry, our food finally comes out at 12:40. About the only thing that was tasty was the sweet potato hush puppies. The rest of the food was nothing special. In fact, I barely ate anything on my plate and others complained. Our drinks weren't refilled like they should've been and there was no ice in the cups. Checks finally come out at 12:50. They messed up our checks and everyone was charged 18% gratuity. Specifically, I paid 18% twice because they messed the bills up and I didn't have time to wait for them to correct it and put it on one check. Absolutely nothing special about this place. My entire group couldn't wait to get back to the office to find something tastier to munch on and stated that they would not return. read more

Walked in around 12:05 and still waiting on food with just water. First time and will be the last. Update on food: Ordered the boudin balls for an appetizer. The boudin balls had a lemon taste? Threw off my taste buds. It took at least 20 mins for six boudin balls to come out. My coworker had the hamburger steak lunch and they liked it. Another coworker had a grilled chicken sandwich and advised it was not seasoned at all. I had the shrimp poboy and it was pretty good. Overall I wouldn't recommend for lunch. It took 45 mins from me walking in to get my food. That is horrible. The waitress was nowhere to be found after she took our order. No updates or explaining the reason for the late delivery of our food until I had to ask at the 35 min mark. It also didn't help that she didn't know what came as a side on a couple of things on the menu. Don't think I will try it again. read more

We've been coming here for decades. Sadly the quality of food continues to decline. Today at lunch my grilled drum fish was so tough it could not be cut with a fork. And the hush puppies now have raw dough in them (which the waitress said was not unhealthy because it comes from a baked sweet potato). Are hush puppies that are raw on the inside now a thing? My fiancé and I were super excited to try this place. It's near our home, the prices are reasonable, they have options for both of us. It was a huge letdown. Our server did her BEST! Her name was Mariah & she was doing everything! I think I overheard her telling another table that a server called out. She was running all over the place. She did the absolute best she could do!! I was very excited about this and even more excited when I saw the giant bowl of pasta heading my way! *WOMP**WOMP* The pasta was over cooked which I will let that slide for an awesome sauce. There was NO flavor. My veggies didn't seem to be seasoned either. I was extremely let down. Wait, the worst part was that my sauce was soooooo watery!! I feel like even soup is thicker than my sauce was. My fiancé ordered the seafood platter. She was sooo excited about it. She said it was not good. Side note - she did say the sweet potato fries were delicious. She also gave me half of her hush puppy & that was very tasty. We decided to each get dessert to take home because we were seated next to the dessert fridge. I chose lemon cheesecake!!! I couldn't wait to dig into it. I wish I would have left it. The cheesecake was gummy. Like, you know how cheesecake is smooth & velvet, this was so gummy I had to chew it. It also fell right off the crust. She hasn't tried her Mississippi mud pie yet. I hate doing negative reviews but they're important. We will not be going back. We spent $72 for really crappy, tasteless, watery, gummy food. I'm super disappointed. Met friends for a late lunch one day and was seated. We ordered our food and were waiting and just visiting with each other - no rush. Before our food arrived we were asked to move to a different table, as they needed ours for a group. No problem and we didn't have to move far. Once we finished our meal we continued visiting and enjoying our drinks and deciding whether we wanted dessert. Again we were asked to move to another table as they had another group coming in. One of our group replied "that's OK we will just leave". We all thought it was RUDE they asked us to move AGAIN especially when we noticed the room to the left when you first walk in was empty. When we stepped outside we said our goodbyes and never saw a 'group' go in, nor was there a group waiting to be seated when we got up. The food was just OK - small portions but I get inflation is bad these days. We won't be back. Sad as this place use to be SO good. read more

I came here for the first time last week for a meeting and got the shrimp plate and it was phenomenal. I wanted to come back soon because it was that good. We started this time with the Spinach and Artichoke dip. Which was enough to satisfy 3-4 people as an appetizer. We got the Fried Shrimp plate again with their sensation salad and twice/stuff baked potato. This was the best fried shrimp I have had in a long time. They were large and breaded perfectly. You could definitely tell they were fresh gulf shrimp. The sanitation salad was a good portion and better than others around the city in my opinion. The twice baked potatoes was better than Duke's or Don's seafood. Back to back times I was thoroughly impressed with this place, I will certainly be back soon and will recommend it to anyone!! read more

Was here yesterday with a group of friends. As this was my first Easter away from my family I needed to get out and I had high hopes as one of the girls in our party is a regular and had nothing but great things to say. The sweet potato hush puppies were DELICIOUS..but that's about where my positive reviews stop. The bad: - The mimosas are "bottomless" but each person at the table had to ask the server for refills multiple times - I ordered the sweet potato pancakes. Because sweet potatoes are orange I was expecting the batter to be like that of the hush puppies. My pancakes were plain buttermilk pancakes with cinnamon and pecans thrown in. When I explained this to the server she took my plate back then returned a few minutes later saying "the cook said these are the sweet potato pancakes". Not wanting to be rude I simply explained that sweet potatoes are orange so there's no way the order was correct. She offered to have them remade. 15 minutes later she comes back with, you guessed it, two pancakes made from the same exact batter. - I also witnessed them turn away a couple 20 minutes prior to closing time which is just bad business All in all I definitely will not be back. Food was excellent! I ordered a medium rare filet which exceeded my expectations. It was so delicious. However, out of everyone, my food was forgotten so it came out much later than the rest of my families. Our service was okay.. she'd forgotten my mom and sisters drinks and took about 30 minutes to bring my wine. My aunt tried to split checks two ways which must have been hard for the server to understand "who was with who" so my aunt ended up paying the full bill. Ate there Monday for lunch and had the worst meal I've ever eaten there . I ordered a hamburger med well fries no salt extra crisp, my fries were done right but my burger was charcoal, I sent it back to be redone. The second one was almost as crisp and my fries were under cooked and loaded with salt. I have a heart condition and try to limit my salt intake, Apiece of the burger broke off and I tied to eat it and al most chipped a tooth. I showed this to the waitress that I couldn't crack it with my fork pushing down on it. She said sorry and she would talk to the kitchen who would speak to the owner. Was in Baton Rouge on a business trip and asked a local for a nice local place to have dinner. I sat at the bar, had a few Abita Ambers, and ordered way to much, however, what better way to get a feel of a restaurant then sample a few things? Started with the Spinach and Artichoke dip and it was great. The sweet potato hushpuppies were delicious, but a tad bit overcooked in the fryer. I love oysters and had to try the po boy dressed. The sandwich had so many oysters on it that when I took my first bite, 3-4 of these delicious critters dropped on the plate. Don't you hate it when this happens? Yeah, me either. I had the stuffed tilapia and the sauce made it heaven. The service was friendly and inviting. To bad a did not have a refrigerator in my hotel room. Cafe Americain used to be our go to spot. I've been here for dinner, lunch, and even hosted a few parties in the private dining room. Grant it, the owner is pretty nice, but he can say some things that make you raise your eyebrow and give your best side eye. The sweet potato hush puppies used to be to die for. They were plump, round, a nice rust orange color, and perfectly fried. Unfortunately, after our last visit, I'm uncertain if we will return. The sweet potato hush puppies were small and cooked to a crisp. When I mentioned it to the waiter. He took them to the back and returned to us stating that the cook said that's how they are supposed to be. Now, I like change, especially when it's for the better. But I don't like change when it comes to food I love. I used to go out of my way to come here for their sweet potato hush puppies. We also split the seafood platter. The shrimp were really good. The fish and oysters were mediocre. The stuffing in the shrimp was sour. I also ordered Mike's margarita. It was supposed to be top shelf, but it was a disaster. Our waiter was cool.
