Stopped by after lunch in Glendale after eagerly anticipating the chance to finally try their Halo Halo. Unfortunately, it ended up being a huge disappointment. We ordered both the regular Halo Halo and the "Upside Down" Halo Halo. The regular version tasted like it had coffee ice cream, which completely threw me off. I kept wondering if I had been given the wrong order because it definitely wasn't the classic flavor I expected. The "Upside Down" Halo Halo was even more confusing, it looked exactly like a regular Halo Halo. For those unfamiliar with this Filipino dessert, the traditional Halo Halo has all the mix-ins at the bottom. So if you're going to call something "upside down," wouldn't it make sense for those ingredients to be on top? Just saying. There were other issues as well. Instead of traditional pinipig (toasted/puffed rice flakes), they used Frosted Flakes (the cereal!). The boba were scarce and hard, there were only a few strands of jackfruit, a sliver of flan, and coconut jellies. Most notably, it lacked classic ingredients like sweetened beans and macapuno that give authentic Halo Halo its signature flavor and texture. If you're looking for a traditional Halo Halo, this isn't it. I have to disagree with the claims that Cafe 86 serves the best Halo Halo, in my opinion, it's one of the worst I've had (with Manila Inasal's coconut milk version still being my least favorite). At $11.50 each, the portion size and quality simply don't justify the price. The Frosted Flakes didn't work for me, and what tasted like coffee ice cream completely changed the dessert's flavor profile. The problem with many modern dessert shops is that they try to reinvent traditional favorites for the mainstream but end up losing the essence of what made them special in the first place. Authentic Halo Halo is all about the balance of classic ingredients and textures, and this version missed the mark. Would I come back? Never. Would I recommend it? Absolutely not. If you're craving a more traditional Halo Halo, I'd recommend heading to Max's in Glendale instead. read more

Who doesn't love ube??! This location is very lively where it feels like it is the first location. They seem to have more services like catering specials for this location, location specific specials and they want you to hang out here. Honestly this cafe 86 is my favorite . The decor is top notch. They have some things that are like , if you know you know. I'd have some of these things in my man cave if I could. The service was kind and friendly too. Julie was really warm and welcoming. It's always a plus when you get great service with great food. My favorite thing here is the ube monster. I LOVE LOVE cafe 86. Psyched that the eagle rock one is open! Recently met the new owners Elaine and Andrew, who are super friendly and sweet. They are so excited to own this awesome shop. Why wouldn't they? Literally everything in there is so good. My top faves: ube truffle, mais con yelo bar, the best halo halo in town (upside down version), and the ube cheesecake. I was looking for a spot with ube for boba and I was nearby and found this spot. It didn't take long as it is in the same plaza as the sprouts. Parking is plenty and not hard to find. Staff here is super kind and friendly but my drink just did not come out well. I asked if the Thai milkshake was good and the cashier said it was one of their most popular drinks. Great! Well either they made the drink wrong or didn't give me the right drink because what I got was not a Thai tea "milkshake" rather a frozen block of Thai tea full of ice chunks. It wasn't too sweet and had a good mix of textures with the jelly, vanilla ice cream, and flan mixed in. The regular size is pretty big though so I'd probably get the mini next time Halo halo bread pudding: 2/5 -- they heat it up for you which is nice but the bread pudding just tasted overwhelmingly of banana bread and had a stodgy texture that I didn't care for. My friend and I were debating what the place will be when it was still under construction, a bakery?, a cake shop? a cafe (obviously lol) but we totally did not expect that this will be a Filipino Dessert shop! I really wanted to try their Ube Leche Flan, unfortunately during my vist, they have already sold out of the delicious treat - I ended up bring home a couple Ube Butter bars and their Halo Halo. The Ube butter bar was rich and delectable but I got to say, you don't want to over dose on this - reiterating that this sinfully good treat is VERY RICH, the ube is delicately infused to their buttery deliciousness. Needed an afternoon pick me up, and all other non commercial coffee shops within the area were closed. I would always see this place every time I'd go to Sprouts and remembered a window sign stating they serve coffee. Upon entering my sister and I were nicely greeted by the person at the front. What this drink consisted of was a heaping scoop of biscoff butter spread almost like peanut butter, with the espresso shot pulled on top of it, and lastly a whole bunch of milk. I usually can withstand coffee that's not made well or burnt, but this seriously did not taste good at all. As much as I tried, the thick cookie butter did not dissolve into the drink and it left a very chalky like texture in mouth.
