Even more disgusting with the soggy Frosted Flakes
    Madelaine C.

Stopped by after lunch in Glendale after eagerly anticipating the chance to finally try their Halo Halo. Unfortunately, it ended up being a huge disappointment. We ordered both the regular Halo Halo and the "Upside Down" Halo Halo. The regular version tasted like it had coffee ice cream, which completely threw me off. I kept wondering if I had been given the wrong order because it definitely wasn't the classic flavor I expected. The "Upside Down" Halo Halo was even more confusing, it looked exactly like a regular Halo Halo. For those unfamiliar with this Filipino dessert, the traditional Halo Halo has all the mix-ins at the bottom. So if you're going to call something "upside down," wouldn't it make sense for those ingredients to be on top? Just saying. There were other issues as well. Instead of traditional pinipig (toasted/puffed rice flakes), they used Frosted Flakes (the cereal!). The boba were scarce and hard, there were only a few strands of jackfruit, a sliver of flan, and coconut jellies. Most notably, it lacked classic ingredients like sweetened beans and macapuno that give authentic Halo Halo its signature flavor and texture. If you're looking for a traditional Halo Halo, this isn't it. I have to disagree with the claims that Cafe 86 serves the best Halo Halo, in my opinion, it's one of the worst I've had (with Manila Inasal's coconut milk version still being my least favorite). At $11.50 each, the portion size and quality simply don't justify the price. The Frosted Flakes didn't work for me, and what tasted like coffee ice cream completely changed the dessert's flavor profile. The problem with many modern dessert shops is that they try to reinvent traditional favorites for the mainstream but end up losing the essence of what made them special in the first place. Authentic Halo Halo is all about the balance of classic ingredients and textures, and this version missed the mark. Would I come back? Never. Would I recommend it? Absolutely not. If you're craving a more traditional Halo Halo, I'd recommend heading to Max's in Glendale instead.

Good niche chain if you love ube! Relaxed vibe and a cool hangout place. Fast service and the staff make good drinks. I got the upside down halo halo that has more ube than the traditional version and some tapioca pearls. It was delicious. More on the pricier side for a halo halo but this is a specialized cafe and they have various ube treats and provide a nice place to interact with others and decompress so I would say it is justified.

I love me some Cafe 86, and this location is no exception. From their ube treats to drinks, it's everything I could want when I'm craving a sweet treat. This time around I got a matcha drink and my husband got a calamansi juice. The calamansi juice was so refreshing on a hot day and the matcha was a great pick me up. There's plenty of parking at the plaza as well, so it won't be an issue.

Shitty photo. Don't thumbs it up.

Was looking for a dessert to accompany my pizza dinner on this Postmates night. For whatever reason, this place popped up on the app. And since I'm partial to ube (who isn't), I decided to order from this spot. - Ube Leche Flan Cupcake - 8/10: So yeah, you put flan on top of a dense, moist and super rich ube cupcake. How can you go wrong? Super delicious! - Ube Truffles - 8/10: Compressed golf-ball sized Ube dessert. Super rich, like the cupcake. Not too sweet at all. Another decadent delight. Definitely will have to go here one day and try their beverages!

Who doesn't love ube??! This location is very lively where it feels like it is the first location. They seem to have more services like catering specials for this location, location specific specials and they want you to hang out here. The food and drinks are still the same from what I am used to which is nice to know. Plenty of free parking in the lot.

Honestly this cafe 86 is my favorite . The decor is top notch. They have some things that are like , if you know you know. I'd have some of these things in my man cave if I could. The service was kind and friendly too. Julie was really warm and welcoming. It's always a plus when you get great service with great food. My favorite thing here is the ube monster. When my sweet tooth hits this is what I want. The pastries are also good . Those aren't too sweet. Definitely coming back here as a repeat customer. I suggest you check this place out. Parking is easy as well in the plaza so you don't got to worry about that .

Ordered a matcha from here and the crack cheesecake. The matcha was a tad sweet for my taste but I had lowered the amount. The music was pretty good and they played hiphop. The staff were really friendly and helped me decide on which dessert to get. The crack cheesecake wasn't very sweet and it had great flavor. The workers also checked on how the drink was so I appreciated that.

Went for the halo halo. One upside down halo halo and one mais. I've had the upside down one at the West Covina location. Love how it's mostly Ube ice cream, hence the upside down! The Mais want not corny at all, no pun intended. It was just creamed corn at the bottom. No other jellies. Maybe if they put corn ice cream? Pretty good place to chill out. Talk over drinks and desserts. Plenty of parking! Service was service, nothing out of the ordinary.

Fun place to grab desserts and drinks! Cafe 86 does Filipino inspired drinks and desserts. They also have a few sandwiches on the menu: grilled cheese, chicken pesto, pastrami. Cafe 86 is a family owned chain and am happy that they opened up a store in Glendale and Eagle Rock, Ca. This location in Eagle Rock shares a parking lot with Sprouts Market and other nearby businesses. I never had issues with parking here. Good location. Service is very friendly and helpful.

I LOVE LOVE cafe 86. Psyched that the eagle rock one is open! Recently met the new owners Elaine and Andrew, who are super friendly and sweet. They are so excited to own this awesome shop. Why wouldn't they? Literally everything in there is so good. My top faves: ube truffle, mais con yelo bar, the best halo halo in town (upside down version), and the ube cheesecake. All of their shakes are also ridiculously rich and delicious. The inside is humble and clean. They always play good background music too. I also love now that they have a rewards/points system going for their loyal customers. I also really love the ample free parking in that plaza. We'll be seeing you guys soon! My cravings need to be satisfied every week

Green Rose tea to calm my cramps

Walked in here, and loved the music, which means this place was definitely a vibe! Fast service and I signed up for their points program, so can't wait to come back! I got myself a green rose tea due to the fact that I was cramping horrendously on my first day of Auntie Flo being in town. After several sips, my cramps calmed down, so thank you for having this on the menu!

I've been wanting to go to Cafe 86 for a while and when I finally went, it did not disappoint! I love the pastries they offer. I couldn't try everything, but the ones I've tried are so good. I love that everything is filipino-based dessert and I love that this place is not afraid to display its filipino roots. I genuinely believe that this place also provides a good place to study because when I went, there were a lot of people working or studying. The vibes and ambiance gives study cafe! You already know the workers are all very friendly too!!

Servers are super friendly! They welcome you as soon as you enter their branch. Got our halo-halo and looked exactly in the picture which is definitely not a disappointment. Love their ube halo-halo upside down, but wanted to try the mais con yelo (translated as corn with ice) which is okay. I still prefer the ube. Next time I come back, I'm reverting to the upside down ube halo-halo.

Parking is pretty difficult, and valet is $5. I can easily see the parking lot getting gridlocked on a busy day. I sampled a few of their gelato flavors, including the jasmine lychee and soy sauce. Both were okay, but I just wasn't in the mood for either of them today. I ended up getting the Pandan Toast to try. The pandan flavor was really good--not too grassy and didn't taste too artificial. The ice cream also had a buttery taste to it. It might have been from the toast, but I'm not too sure. The bread itself wasn't oily, which was nice, but it was kind of dry. The pandan sauce definitely helped make it easier to eat. I probably wouldn't eat the bread by itself though because it was super hard and didn't really have much flavor. I wasn't sure what to expect from the toast, but it wasn't quite what I expected. I originally wanted to try the mango sticky rice flavored shaved ice because it looked really good in the photos, but unfortunately they didn't have it today. I'd come back to try their shaved ice when mango is in season again!

So we decided to come here for coffee or tea and ended up having a really nice time. I used to come here quite often about four years ago. Back then, I really liked their Einspänner and ordered it several times. But the last time I came, I thought it was way too sweet, so I hadn't been back since. It had actually been a REALLY long time since I last visited. And when I used to come here four years ago, I always came in the morning or around lunchtime. Last night was my first time ever coming here at night. My friend told us that they are open until midnight, so that's why we decided to come here after dinner. I had heard that parking here can be a nightmare because there aren't enough parking spaces and people have a hard time finding a spot. But once again, my parking luck was AMAZING! A car pulled out right in front of me just as I arrived, so I was able to park very easily. Another friend arrived later than I did, and she said she couldn't find a parking spot at all. She drove around for quite a while looking for one before finally finding street parking. Last night, we also had some tiramisu, and since I'm pretty sensitive to caffeine, I decided to have a caffeine-free ade instead of coffee or tea. It was a little sweet for my taste, but it was ok. We sat outside on the outdoor patio and talked and talked and talked. We had such a fun time together! However, it was actually pretty cold outside last night. I remember thinking that it felt surprisingly chilly. But what was even crazier was how FREEZING cold it was inside the café! They had the air conditioning turned up so high that both my friends and I felt like we were going to freeze to death. The restroom is inside, and I also went inside to get some water, so I mentioned to one of the male employees that it was freezing inside. He told me that they didn't feel cold at all because they were working, and that THEY were actually feeling really hot. I went back to our table and told my friends what he had said, and they were like, "WHAT?! We're freezing to death over here!" The parking lot here is actually pretty large, so I was wondering why it was so difficult to find a parking spot. Apparently, at night, the left side is the café, while on the right side there is a bar where people can drink and also play games. There was a huge line of people waiting outside the bar last night, so I'm guessing that's probably why the parking lot gets so crowded and it's hard to find a spot. It was also pretty chilly outside last night because of the low temperature, so one thing I wished they had on the outdoor patio was heaters. That would have made sitting outside much more comfortable on a cold night.

The barista was super helpful with explaining what each drink was, didn't steer us in any direction though. The Houjicha shaved ice was the standout. Houjicha is a toasted green tea, and the flavor is a little difficult to describe--it has a warm, grainy, almost wheat-like taste that's very different from traditional green tea. At first, it can seem like an unusual flavor, but don't give up on it. Once you add the syrup they serve on the side and keep eating, it really grows on you. It somehow gets better with every bite, and before you know it, you can't stop eating it. The Iced Brown Sugar Miso Latte wasn't exactly what I was in the mood for, but it was still well made. It had a nice balance of umami and sweetness without either flavor overpowering the other. While it wasn't my personal favorite, I'd still recommend it if you're looking to try something a little different. Overall, Anko is a great spot if you're looking for unique Japanese-inspired desserts and drinks in a calm, beautifully designed space.
