I won't hold it against them though (it is a college library cafe after all, and it really just creates a sense of whimsicalness). The tea is pretty great, made from tea leaves, not tea bags. There are big comfy chairs (though they're always occupied in the daytime). They have a good option of prepared foods in their fridge (from Rajun Cajun, Siam Thai, The Nile, etc.) and a wide selection of baked goods. All reasonably priced. Basically a very well-stocked library cafe, making it really easy to literally hibernate 24/7 at Harper library when you're studying. Harper Cafe makes leaving the building unnecessary .

The decor is warm and inviting, and the cashiers and baristas are always friendly and helpful. The cashier in fact walked me through their selection quite extensively and patiently. I haven't tried any of their food so far, but definitely intend to do so. The establishment is open only till 3pm on weekdays, which is unfortunate because otherwise this would have become my default study spot. I still plan to visit, perhaps with a book or two. They asked iced or cold brew and I said dealer's choice - I got the cold brew and it was a GREAT gamble!! Loved that there was a cup of free keychains at the register, so I had to take one back w me as a souvenir. Bright spot with ample seating and locals working on laptops. Shoutout to the Philz staff for an overall delightful visit and enjoyable bev!

I have always wanted to write a review for these guys and I'm doing it now, now that I've moved away. I miss their perfect garlic chicken sandwich, the flavor and the bread are just perfect. Its also a big portion so we will usually have it for dinner leftover! Their Pistachio ice cream is the best and the other flavors are pretty good. There has always been seating and it's a cool place to go for even coffee and/or tea as they have a variety of flavors. I'm also in love with their BBQ chicken sandwich and as always everything is halal! They also have great vegan options and Ive actually eaten the vegan chicken and it tastes just like chicken, which was a nice surprise. The only con about this place is that when you order they take their time delivering and it's not as warm but it's just better to eat it there. read more

I was excited to try Café 53 after a friend's recommendation, but unfortunately, I will not be returning. I ordered the vegan buffalo chicken sandwich, and while I was looking forward to it, the experience was soured by terrible customer service. Despite my order being clearly visible, the associate took an unreasonable amount of time to even acknowledge me. When I finally told him my name, he didn't simply hand over my food--he gave me what felt like a pop quiz to prove my identity. The whole interaction was rude and unnecessary. The sandwich itself wasn't bad--the bread was probably the best thing. However, service is most important. I love the new set up, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Very conducive to work, study or meeting friends over coffee. By far the best sandwiches in the neighborhood, my favorite is the chicken sumac, both the vegan and non-vegan options are equally outstanding. Each sandwich is carefully made to be delicious. Nice little place on 53rd in Hyde Park. Very good gelato and respectable coffee. The service has been good each time we have gone. It can sometimes be hard to get a seat at a table since they are largely occupied by the laptop crowd, but there is a nice park next door. It doesn't yet have the full Hyde Park neighborhood joint feel of Cafe 57 (no relation) or Z&H, but it is a welcome addition to the 53rd street businesses. Definitely worth a try. read more

Cozy sand which spot nestled in the middle of downtown Hyde Park. The meat is fresh but the great part is that you can buy a lot of multi-ethnic sandwiches or varietal of. The falafel is particularly good, a bit dry but tasty nonetheless. Sometimes they close a bit early than google or yelp states but it's a great lunch spot. Meaning, the cashier really had a difficult time with placing pleasantries in their tone. I mean, give me patience for the $8 coffee I want. I show up here because it's decent to look at but don't give me no side eye for wanting oat milk with size 18 hips. I did feel a bit judged for my selection but!!!! The next visits I had were nice, however, what does that do for anyone? You want repeat customers? Remember to be nice the first time you meet one always. My only regret is getting the 6-inch instead of the 12-inch because it was that good. Now, I did forget how tough a good hoagie can be to bite into, but honestly, that just made it feel even more real. The sandwich was fresh, filling, and worth every bite. The vibe inside was cool. I came in, they had some good music playing an alternative group from the '90s and I was greeted right away. The gentleman who took my order over the phone was pleasant, and the service felt welcoming. The price was decent, and there was parking when I went, but keep in mind I stopped by on a Tuesday after 4 p.m. The only thing I wish they had was more drink options besides soda, I wanted a water and there was none that I seen. Overall, I can't wait to go back. If the vegan sandwich was this good, I already know the other hoagies are probably killing it too. This is a couple that goes around the city and suburbs tasting food and given their opinion on it. In the past, I have not trusted them too much cause not everything was what they say it is but looking at another video I saw my bishop from my home. Church arrived there to eat. I was at the eye doctor and I had not eaten all day so when I saw this, I just simply said I'm on the way. I put some pictures here of the outside and the inside of the small but cozy restaurant. It was very nice. Music was playing. The young man behind the counter was extremely nice. It was clean and desirable. I also ended up ordering strawberry shortcake, which I will try later when I get home. I bought Italian beef to give to my husband. We will see how that is when I get there and I also ordered chili which I may eat when I go to work tomorrow unless I get the munchies tonight and finish to wrap this up. I think this place is a 10 out of 10 if you are reading this run don't walk and try their fresh sandwiches I'm still waiting to try the soup in which they didn't have any but hopefully when I return they will.
