Super cute cafe in "downtown" Hyde Park with excellent coffee and friendly service. I'm not a coffee aficionado, but my dad is, and he was very happy with the quality of the coffee. The cafe doesn't have coffee with "regular" names (eg. Americano). Instead, each item on the menu has a Philz-only name and twist. This makes for a more unique experience that other cafes in Hyde Park. I enjoyed their Iced Coffee Rose, and my father enjoyed both the Silken Splendor and Jacob's Wonderbar. The decor is warm and inviting, and the cashiers and baristas are always friendly and helpful. The cashier in fact walked me through their selection quite extensively and patiently. I haven't tried any of their food so far, but definitely intend to do so. The establishment is open only till 3pm on weekdays, which is unfortunate because otherwise this would have become my default study spot. I still plan to visit, perhaps with a book or two. Overall, I recommend Philz if you are in the neighborhood in the morning or early afternoon. read more

My first time at a Philz!! They don't have this franchise in nyc and I've been hearing all about it from the west coast influencers, so I had to stop by on my CHI visit. TBH, Philz is just like any standard coffee shop, offering different kinds of roasts, teas, and light bites. I asked the cashier for a rec and they pointed to the popular flavors. I'm not a dark roast lover, but also wanted a good cup of coffee, so I got the Philtered Soul, which is their medium roast. I initially ordered it hot, but it was pretty warm (~50+ degrees, warm in chi standards lol) that day, so the barista gladly pivoted and made my drink cold. They asked iced or cold brew and I said dealer's choice - I got the cold brew and it was a GREAT gamble!! Loved that there was a cup of free keychains at the register, so I had to take one back w me as a souvenir. Bright spot with ample seating and locals working on laptops. Really quick counter service despite being a little crowded. The server was extremely pleasant. I ordered the caramel coconut coffee. I added creamer and it was perfect. I wish I had time to go once more before heading back home tomorrow. It's located in what I found to be a beautiful neighborhood - Hyde Park. Very walkable. A lot of other shops within walking distance. It also looks as if it serves as a working space, as I saw many patrons with their laptops. In what's more or less downtown Hyde park, a university neighborhood, you definitely get the feeling that you're on a university campus at Philz Coffee Shop. It is Street parking, so it will just depend on the time of day you're there. Once you're inside, there are plenty of tables and coffee bar space to hang out at. In fact, there is a second room to walk into with a lot more tables. The Ambiance is relaxed, not at all loud, a nice hubbub of people having conversations, and none of that loud Starbucks banging. Philz Decor is not overwhelming, and it feels very Mom and Pop and neighborhoody. Again, much more welcoming than the green mermaid place. Importantly, the menu uses easy to understand language and easy to understand sizes for different cups. Sophie and the other baristas were so very friendly, welcoming, professional, engaging, and efficient! For my first visit, I went for a simple cup of coffee. Start with the basics, because of a place can't get this right, then the review goes downhill and I'm not coming back the second time. Suffice to say... excellent cup of coffee! I like this contemporary take on a coffee shop. Each cup is made drip-fresh - which you can taste. Located in downtown Hyde Park, it's perfectly positioned on the corner with lovely big windows. It's nice to sit and people-watch. If you have a certain taste in mind, it's perfectly appropriate to ask for recommendations, which I did. Instead of sugar, they will use honey at no additional cost. Due to minimal seating and university students squatting to study, it's less intimate than I expected. Also, I don't know if I was sitting under a speaker or if the coffee made me super alert (haha!), but the music seemed a bit loud. BUT the fresh taste and modern ambiance will keep me coming back! Philz quickly became my favorite coffee shop in Hyde Park. Admittedly, it took me a while to figure out the menu but once I found my fav - Philtered Soul for it's lovely hazelnut flavor - I was all set. The staff has always been friendly, and patient, when taking my order and I appreciate that the baristas give you a chance to taste your drink and make any adjustments before you put a lid on. Glad we came here instead of dunkin across the street to get our coffee fix. The menu describes the coffee selections based on type of strength and flavor notes so you can determine which best suits your preference. Each hand made, drip method, see pics. So come with patience as these are truly creations made with care. They also ask what sweetness level you'd like, hot or iced, and offer oatmilk as an alternative to milk/cream. Ordered a Mocha Tesora hot, not very sweet, with oatmilk. Just the right temp for me to drink as soon as it was ready, as in not scorchin hot and kept my taste buds to enjoy the taste of the coffee. Others in my party ordered the iced mint mojito, which was light and refreshing, fresh mint muddled first at the bottom and garnished with some as well. Also, the iced coffee rosé, which as expected is floral, done with rose water, and refreshing as well. Bathrooms kept clean, you do have to ask them for the code to get in. You wait (and wait) for it and pay a bigger price but it's definately worth it: this is more like a coffee cocktail (non-alcoholic) that you can sip and enjoy for a long time. Went while in town visiting. Wanted something before hitting the road. You could order online and pick up or go to a walk up window and order ( well a table in the doorway). They also had an area on sidewalk with tables to have your drink outside. I ordered a iced chai tea. It didn't take a long time to prepare. They have their own blend so it had a different taste, unique. It's hard to describe but the spices were good. I would go back when in an area that has this spot. There's everything to like about this place. The coffee selections are wide ranging (at the barista's suggestion I tried a spicy dark roast - Ether). The coffee is ground as you wait. When it's served, you can give it a try to make sure it meets your expectations. I declined an offered taste-test and headed to the outdoor seating. The first taste told me I wanted more sweet--easily done with an earnest attitude of wanting to get it right by the barista. So happy they opened a location in HP! Been wanting to try Philz since they opened their first location and being so close to UChicago campus, this is just more much convenient to get to. I had to get their Mojito, which is a signature iced drink. It wasn't overly sweet, subtle hints of mint, and it was rich and creamy. I would definitely recommend trying this one. I also got a chive scone, which wasn't as great as their coffee. I wish they could've heated it up or something! Price point is also definitely on the pricier side for a latte. Straight up pour over coffee and tea - super organic and basic in the best way possible. 3 stars because the service was just rude. For a large chai tea it was 5.25. I can make this at home for about .30 cents, without an attitude. I mean, you come to a place like this for the service. I purchased whole bean; the cashier seemed really annoyed about that, until she found out I didnt want it ground - then she was all smiles. Chicago's second store to officially open in the Midwest! So great that Philz has been expanding and continues to grow in other states! They used to just be concentrated in the Bay Area but I love that it has stores now in LA, DC and most recently, Chicago. You'll never go wrong with a cup of love from Philz. Everything is made fresh for you there. So how do you order anyway? You come up to bar when they call out the next guest in line upon entering the store. If you're a fan of lattes or cappuccinos, they don't do any of that. However, you can select from darker, medium and lighter blends. Barista asks you if you want it light sweet, medium sweet or sweet. Same goes for the cream. Just say if you prefer it light cream, medium cream or creamy. It all depends on your preference. They also offer alternative milks such as vanilla soy, regular soy, oat milk and nonfat milk for free! You can also have it sweetened with honey or choose any of the alternative sugar sweeteners - Equal, Sweet N Low, Splenda and Stevia. Note: you can say "Philz Way" and they'll prep your drink with medium cream and have it medium sweet. "House Way" on the other hand is equivalent to having it sweet and creamy. They do have Iced Specialty drinks (Mint Mojito, Ecstatic, Gingersnap Iced Coffee and Iced Coffee Rose). These drinks are usually done house way but you can modify it to your liking. read more

I have loved Philz coffee ever since I first tried their mint mojito in SF- it's still something I day dream about. This store in Hyde Park is beautiful inside, in typical Philz fashion. I ordered online via their app, which was super easy and I love all the different ways they let you customize your drink. My barista even asked me if I wanted to taste my drink before I walked away with it to make sure I liked it- they really go the extra mile to make sure the experience is superb, totally worth the premium price you pay for their coffee in my opinion. They don't charge extra for milk alternatives which is nice- something no other coffee shop that I frequent does. Their coffees are always delicious, strong and unique. Although we visit Chicago frequently, this was our first time at Philz (53rd/Blackstone). All I can say is I wish we tried it sooner!! The service is friendly (like the staff love to work there), the gluten free muffin was FANTASTIC, and the coffee was 11/10! I've never had Philz before, but came here after my friends from the Bay Area raved about it. I can see why they say it's the best coffee ever! I dropped by with a friend during the soft opening and the barista who took my order outside was the sweetest and most accommodating. She recommended the Mojito- which had the perfect balance of mint and sweetness that didn't drown out the coffee. Philz is the anti-Starbucks. Rather than long queues leading up to the cashier, it has a long counter lined with baristas. As soon as I walked in, they started beckoning me to approach. When I replied that I was still deciding, one particularly friendly female barista said, "Come on up, and I will help you decide! I can tell you way more than that menu." Who can resist that? After chatting with her, she learned that I wanted something cold and refreshing with an interesting flavor profile. She recommended the mint mojito iced coffee, which she claimed "changed my life." Again, who can resist that? I said sure, why not. The mint mojito totally delivered. It tasted like mint and coffee ice cream in a cup! Especially delicious was the creamy latte foam on top. Overall it is good for working. I think it is worth for the pastries and coffee. I like the variation of lattes and etc, very unique. The sandwiches always come way too soggy though, for me it is the worst sandwiches compared to other coffee shops around; I wouldn't recommend eating those (my opinion) read more
