Dirty Chai Tea Latte and Carrot Muffin
Jen S.

I always love coming by sip and savor! Everyone is always so nice and welcoming. They have great coffee. I wish they had horchatas , but I also recently got into dirty chais- they make it well. Decent tables if you want to get work done. It's not too loud. I love living down the street.

I ordered a Raspberry Cheese Muffin and a latte. The muffins was delicious I took it home and put I warmed it up. The latte wasn't anything to write home about. I'd go back to try more desserts. The shop has a vibe and nice customer service. I also want to check out their later hours

Love this location! I was greeted warmly during my visit, chai latte was fabulous, and nice place to support locally. They have plenty of places to sit, chill vibes, and a nice Black owned business in the area.

I really hate that I wasted $10 on an ice latte that tastes like milk with no coffee flavor at all. Ordered a banana caramel latte and I cannot taste any of those flavors. Not to mention one of the baristas was handling food orders without gloves. Save your money and go elsewhere. Also Dawn makes a better coffee and only a few blocks away.

Quickly greeted and asked how the barista could help me. It took a minute to review their menu, but I landed on the small honey vanilla oat milk latte. It came out truly hot/warm. Not sure that I loved the mix and would probably just get either honey or vanilla next time. I did appreciate that the menu included how many shots of espresso went into each drink. You can really tell that the spot has a community vibe. While waiting, one can pursue the community board. People gather there to gather and catch up. Their mission alone would be a 5/5.

Egg and Cheese Croissant

I've been to this Sip & Savor in Hyde Park a couple times, and I've always enjoyed it. This most recent time, I tried the Mocha Bama and the Egg and Cheese Croissant Sandwich. No issues with service.

I'm writing to report a slight downgrade on this otherwise good establishment. I'll go with 2 1/2 stars instead of the 3 I originally gave. Anyone can have an 'off day' and I want to believe that's what happened here. I came in last week 12/3 and requested my usual decaf or half decaf, per my doctor's orders, and the new or (or temp, I hope) barista said they do NOT HAVE DECAF, or not the drip decaf. I said I have received it here before, but she replied they only have decaf espresso (Note to coffee lovers: as much as I can't stand decaf, stay away from cafes that only offer decaf as an upcharge of espresso or Americano. Drip coffee Decaf is not rocket science!!!) So I went ahead and ordered regular, as I did not have time to stop at my beloved Starbucks, which is just 3.5 blocks away from the Hyde Park location. The overall experience was not pleasant, but I only come once a week as they are a 15 minute walk. I wrote an email complaining the same day with no response. I'm a fossil and so I used email to keep it 'entre nous'.

Carrot muffin and Chai Tea Latte

I've been here several times. It's a great place to sit and do work. When I first arrived there was jazz music playing in the background, when I was leaving there was upbeat hip hop. I got my usual-carrot muffin and chai tea latte. It was tasty per usual. The employees there are always nice and friendly. As a sidenote I preferred the jazz music to the hip hop. Only because I would get distracted by the lyrics and wanna dance instead of being focused on work.

Bad coffee. Came in afternoon, ordered the house brew. Lukewarm at best. it must have been leftover from the morning.

Super cute cafe in "downtown" Hyde Park with excellent coffee and friendly service…read more I'm not a coffee aficionado, but my dad is, and he was very happy with the quality of the coffee. The cafe doesn't have coffee with "regular" names (eg. Americano). Instead, each item on the menu has a Philz-only name and twist. This makes for a more unique experience that other cafes in Hyde Park. I enjoyed their Iced Coffee Rose, and my father enjoyed both the Silken Splendor and Jacob's Wonderbar. The decor is warm and inviting, and the cashiers and baristas are always friendly and helpful. The cashier in fact walked me through their selection quite extensively and patiently. I haven't tried any of their food so far, but definitely intend to do so. The establishment is open only till 3pm on weekdays, which is unfortunate because otherwise this would have become my default study spot. I still plan to visit, perhaps with a book or two. Overall, I recommend Philz if you are in the neighborhood in the morning or early afternoon.

TBH, Philz is just like any standard coffee shop, offering different kinds of roasts, teas, and light bites. I asked the cashier for a rec and they pointed to the popular flavors. I'm not a dark roast lover, but also wanted a good cup of coffee, so I got the Philtered Soul, which is their medium roast. I initially ordered it hot, but it was pretty warm (~50+ degrees, warm in chi standards lol) that day, so the barista gladly pivoted and made my drink cold. They asked iced or cold brew and I said dealer's choice - I got the cold brew and it was a GREAT gamble!! Loved that there was a cup of free keychains at the register, so I had to take one back w me as a souvenir. Bright spot with ample seating and locals working on laptops. Shoutout to the Philz staff for an overall delightful visit and enjoyable bev!

Because of increasing concerns regarding digital card security and fraud, I had my phone out to manage my card access. When I initially approached the machine, my transaction did not go through because I realized I needed to use a newly activated card from my wallet. I stepped a couple of feet away from the machine to briefly secure my phone, retrieve the correct card from my wallet, and switch it out. While I was doing this--standing right by the ATM queue for less than a minute--an employee named Jawan approached me. In an aggressive and accusatory tone, he asked if I needed to open a bank account. When I responded, he informed me that there was "no loitering in the lobby." Even after I explicitly explained that I had just walked from the ATM and was actively preparing to use it again, Jawan remained combative. He acknowledged that he saw me at the machine, yet persisted in harassing me about "loitering" for simply pausing to swap a card in my wallet. Furthermore, because his unnecessary intervention disrupted and delayed my transaction, another customer stepped up to the machine, at which point Jawan told me I could no longer use it and would have to wait. This type of treatment is appalling. I was a legitimate account holder conducting standard banking business. Being targeted, interrogated, and subjected to false accusations of "loitering" while attempting to use your branch facilities is entirely unacceptable. It created a hostile environment and actively interfered with my ability to access banking services. Capital One Cafes and branches in communities like Hyde Park should be welcoming and secure. Instead, Jawan's unprofessional and antagonistic conduct did the exact opposite, eroding my trust in the branch's staff. I request that regional oversight review this incident, address Jawan's conduct with appropriate disciplinary action or retraining, and contact me regarding how this matter will be handled. Sincerely,

This however means that the servers and staff put little to no effort in creating a welcoming environment for patrons: they are often curt and unhelpful. They are also unapologetic when they get orders wrong or mixed up, which happens more than one might think. The food itself has not been disappointing, though I would recommend their savoury selections over the sweets. The drinks have generally been good, and I quite liked the Vietnamese iced coffee. The ambiance is super pretty, with cozy couches and comfortable chairs. The location is also fantastic, with a lovely porch that's nice to hang out in during the warmer months. The cafe would make an excellent study spot, but the poor quality of service coupled with the pricey food and drink options make me exceedingly reluctant to return. Visit at your own risk!

On top of that, the service was OK for a cafe, but not what I would expect when paying for a $20+ entree... Our table ordered some similar foods and the waiter didn't know what each dish was when it came out, so we had to guess whose was whose. Each dish also came out individually with lag time in between, so when they forgot one of the meals, it wasn't immediately clear and the cashier/waiter were very defensive about it. For those prices, I would rather go to a sit-down restaurant like Mahari or 14 Parish just a few blocks away. This is the cafe's second rebrand that I'm aware of, so some older reviews are commenting on things that don't exist any more. I miss when it was a breakfast spot!
