Now, why didn't anyone tell me about Plein Air? I was in the Hyde Park area with a friend for a walk when we were browsing the neighborhood for a place to have breakfast and we found Plein Air nestled on the University of Chicago campus. To my surprise this is now my new favorite breakfast spot! Plein Air does not take reservations it's a first come first served restaurant where you order your food at the counter and seat yourself. They value community and have plenty of seating inside for folks as well as a larger patio area if you prefer to eat our doors. Their space was open, airy and welcoming. The line can get pretty long but just a little patience because it's worth it and they try their hardest to get you serviced. The food was awesome! So awesome I offered several things from the menu because I couldn't pick just one thing! I ordered their egg breakfast which was served with eggs your way, protein choice, breakfast potatoes and toast, their yogurt and granola bowl, coffee and I absolutely could not forgive myself if I left without getting their raspberry beignet. Everything was delicious, fresh, light, and quality. I can see why it gets so busy! I cannot wait to get back because thay yogurt bowl has been calling my name since I last had it

The experience at Plein Air is perfect for a college campus cafe. It's everything I'd expect but the food is great, and so are the coffee and tea drinks.

First time in Hyde park and I loved it here! This space is so nice - lots of seating inside and out. They have a very large food menu and good looking pastries too! I liked the coffee a lot. The quiche was good!

Jalapeno Chicken Bowl

Super cute cafe but it's always very crowded and the interior space is tight. Their breakfast, sandwiches, and bowls are really tasty! My favorites are the quesadillas and the jalapeño chicken bowl with butter rice. Drinks aren't as good but I am also not a coffee drinker so I have only tried their chai, lemonade, and matcha.

Vegan Chicken Baguette

The vegan sandwich was excellent and it was a good price. The staff were friendly. I love that you can sit outside. It gets crowded on Sundays. I will be back.

Great patio vibes for an autumn afternoon. The line is long but moves fast. I had a matcha latte and a hazelnut beignet. The matcha latte was good! I was underwhelmed by the beignet; it was closer to a paczki and would have been better warmed. They also do not have wifi, so keep that in mind. That said, lots of seating and a unique indoor outdoor situation with nice greenery and the sun streaming in.

Such a beautiful spot! Peaceful, charming, and so relaxing...a true hidden gem . Outside seating is blissful!

Delicious hot sandwich! Great for a quick bite or a light study sesh. Can get busy with lots of students but makes for a lively ambiance and there's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Chicken Poblano Sandwich

Chicken poblano sandwich was delicious! The baguette was crunchy and flavorful, and the chicken was marinated in a delicious creamy sauce and paired nicely with the manchego. The side salad was also so refreshing with a vinaigrette dressing! A cute coffee shop with lots of outdoor seating! The service was a bit slow... but maybe because my sandwich had to be heated up? My friends who got cold sandwiches got their food very quickly.

Light, healthy salad for lunch and iced tea in a shaded courtyard. They also offer breakfast options earlier in the day.

Gruyère & mushroom quiche

Happy my kids brought me here for breakfast. Lots of good options. Small space but clean and streamlined. Happy they had matcha lattes. Service was good and my kids' chorizo burritos were delicious. Only negative was the mushroom & Gruyère quiche - zero taste and was over cooked. So skip that. Will definitely have to try other items.

Ginger plum tea was bomb! It's right on the uchicago campus and seems like a pretty popular study spot so seats go pretty fast

Pret A Manger - Sandwiches

Pret A Manger

Pret replaced Einstein Bros. Bagels at C-Shop inside Reynold's Club…read more I love Pret and was super excited when they opened this year. I would say I probably spent 95% of all my Maroon Dollars (and all my food money) at Pret. If you're new to Pret, get a salad but don't forget the dressing and the free bread that it comes with. I love the Kale Caesar and the Chicken Avocado salads. For breakfast, I always get the Egg Avocado Breakfast Baguette or the Ham Cheese Croissant (tastes kinda like a pizza tbh). I love their tomato soup and grilled cheese toasts as well!! Ok, I will stop listing all the things I love because I truly love almost everything at Pret. Tips: I would say come before 9:00pm, because they usually run out of food items late into the night. The line can also get pretty busy during eating hours (i.e. lunch time and dinner time). They also don't honor the Pret App free coffees/rewards which is mentioned on the app.

Unfortunately, the people at the counter can often be quite terse and unpleasant, though there have been other occasions where they have been exceptionally nice. The ambience is characterless, as one would expect from a Pret. However, the seating area right outside is beautiful during the warmer months, and it's nice to sit outside with drinks and food. The cafe can get quite crowded at lunchtime, but is usually only moderately full. Overall, I like having the option of a Pret on campus, though there are far better cafes within a short distance (Plein Air on Woodlawn, Hallowed Grounds upstairs in the same building, and Grounds of Being at Swift Hall).
