It's the closest coffee place to my apartment other than getting generic corner store coffee, so I'll probably continue to come often, but I have to say I wouldn't go out of the way for it if it wasn't RIGHT by me. It's really quite expensive--$4.00 for an iced coffee! Not iced LATTE which is pretty much the going rate in the area, iced COFFEE! And they feature an Ethiopian brew that's $12/cup. A little extreme! I have not tried it to know if it's worth $12, the very principle of spending that much on a single cup of coffee prevents that from happening, but I highly doubt it's worth it. I mean, the coffee is realllly good. But the prices really makes me cringe. They do use a Clover though, which I guess explains the high prices a little. Also, there's not a lot of room to sit. It's not some place you can really hang out and spend some time on an idle Saturday afternoon sipping your coffee and reading a book, or come to with a friend to sit and chat over coffee, which is a bummer. I've always gotten coffee to go here because I feel like that's the best option. read more

I love Joe's and Everyman in Manhattan and was hoping that this would be a similar sort of place: slightly pricey but extraordinarily good coffee. Nope. The latte was lukewarm and not anything to write home about. The coffee was "eh". So, for me, to have worse coffee for more money doesn't make sense -- there was just none of the absolute yummosity I get with, say a good espresso drink or coffee from Everyman or Joes. read more

My wife and I had a couple of iced mochas. Excellent. Real, full-bodied taste, both of the coffee and the chocolate, and it didn't have that sickly over-sweetened flavor. Plus we were thrilled to drink coffee in NY that wasn't Starbucks. read more

YUMMY COFFEE!! It is pretty expensive, but super tasty. I am addicted! The staff are friendly even though I push through the door when the closed sign is up. I even got a slice of banana bread for free. I tend to get there right at 7 AM because I have to get to work and it is one of the few places where the coffee is great and the place is open. read more

The coffee I had at this shop was really pretty bad - watery and with a fair bit of grounds in it. I guess even a $10,000 coffee maker isn't much good if the person working it doesn't know what they're doing. $4 wasted. I also made the mistake of buying an outrageously priced 12oz bag of beans and had them grind it for my home espresso machine, but they must have set the grinder for "turkish" because what I got at home was such a fine powder it was unusable and clogged my machine. There's another $15 wasted. Overall I was put off by the attitude of coffee snobbery, which is always unpleasant but at least understandable if the barista knows what they're talking about and really loves what they make. This place is very expensive. 3.25 for a small de-caff. It was also watery. I realized I was in trouble the second the lady behind the counter started flipping around some fancy yellow cones and pouring water down funnels like some mad scientist. I liked the name of this place & the reviews. I was curious if it was true that going online was not permitted. So I brought my laptop, and sat across from a lady reading the NYT. After 15 minutes, the nice man came over and said laptops were not allowed. I played innocent, and he pointed to a sign in a corner, and explained there used to be a clearer sign. I then said, actually, I was just curious if it was true. It's true - no laptops (even if not going online!)! I like that there are no laptops allowed -- it was a refreshing atmosphere. Coffee was good, and place was clean and w/unique atmosphere. But no bathroom -- I asked what to do and he said there was a diner across the street. The people at the diner were gracious and let me use their bathroom. I'd go back to this place, but not if I need to get work done during the day. Seemed to be many return customers. A girl was asked by the man who worked there if she smoked (he said this greatly impacted the coffee flavors that would hit her taste buds). She said "smoke what? Not cigarettes, but .... " -- I thought about calling the police then and there, but unfortunately had no proof. read more

La Esperanza coffee was amazing!!! Cute spot, but really small. Worth the money, I actually didn't think it was *that* pricey. Will definitely be back to try other brews. My husband usually gets the "rumbles" after coffee, but this one was fine for him. He was impressed and he is not a coffee drinker. read more

The appropriately named Cafe Grumpy has lived up to its name. I needed coffee badly. Was in the nabe, knew about the place and decided YES....good coffee. Requested a regular sized drip to stay. Sumatra was the brew. Yum, I love Sumatra, rich, dark, fruity, low acid..... I get the very nice glass mug, good size, steaming.....but wait......I could read a newspaper through this coffee mug, it was so watery. And the taste...just barely acceptable for a diner. Not rich, not fruity...acid wasn't a problem because the coffee was so totally diluted. Had a scone...meh. But I came for the coffee, and I will not return. There are PLENTY of other very good to excellent coffee shops in the nabe. If you can imagine, I actually thought that it was worse than Starbucks. BTW, I rarely write reviews, unless it is marvelous....or the emperor has no clothes. This was the later. YMMV read more

Cafe Grumpy has been an NYC specialty coffee staple for years. My first time visiting this BK location and couldn't have had a better experience. Solomon was super knowledgeable and accommodating behind the bar. My single origin espresso was fully dialed and house pourover was perfectly executed for a clean and flavorful cup. LOVE the no laptop policy and limited seating. Great coffee, great service. read more

Just reiterating what others have accurately stated: Unreasonable prices, great coffee, mediocre service, no real space to relax. Baked goods are generally very tasty when they're fresh, but they have a tendency to leave things out a few hours (or perhaps a day) too long. read more

Oh....my.......gawd....this is the slowest coffee shop I have ever been to and I have traveled everywhere. 20 mins for a chai latte?? When I arrived the only capable barista wasn't even present for 10 minutes while two people waited for drinks that when she eventually got to took forever to make. I have worked behind the counter and this is just pure laziness. I'm pretty sure they call it cafe grumpy because that's how you are gonna feel by the time you leave. I'm not an avid coffee intaker, but I've been wishing for a new cafe, walking distance to my studio---this one hits the head on the nail! Grumpy, I welcome you to the 'hood with open arms. The cups of Kayanza, Burundi and Finca Malacara, Santa Ana, El Salvador have me addicted--not caffeine addicted, but the bold coffee flavors and the Blue Sky muffins (saves me a 20 minute jog to the bakery) have me stopping by on my days off! The only caveat is that I wish they had a seating area with Wi-fi, like most of the other competing cafes. I think time will tell if they concede to the demands of the Park Slopian ways. read more

Stopped here for coffee on a recent trip to New York. Love this place! Got the Esperanza coffee and a muffin and was very impressed with both. The place is tiny so don't expect to get a seat, but luckily when I was there I was able to get a seat by the window and enjoyed sitting there and perusing my Time Out NYC magazine stash to plan the rest of my touristy day while sipping my coffee. read more

Cramped, charming atmosphere. Service is pretty slow so be ready to wait 5-10 minutes for your drink if there are 1-2 people ahead of you. Textbook espresso drinks, delicious steamed milk. Hard to beat the flavor the cappuccino. The price is high and (as mentioned above) the wait can end up approaching 50% of morning commute time. Pastries are super high priced. I'd prefer smaller sized ones for $1 to $2. read more

i usually go the the cafe grumpy in chelsea,but i found myself in park slope after sporadically deciding to walk the brooklyn bridge.i'd been in before,and ended up talking to the barista,amanda,for hours about portland,different coffee shops,and some crazy man who walked in spewing nonsense about great coffee in san francisco at some bagel shop.i had an amazing soy cortado,and left after a shot of guest espresso from soma(don't remember the name...)that was a bit citrusy and bright for my tastes,but not bad. this past wednesday i had a clover brewed kenya from the infamous coava roasters in portland,or, and kinna geeked out since my friend jess who lives there had been telling me so much about them.the cup was really juicy,fruity,apricots,very flavourful.despite not a lot of seating,i shared a paper at the one table with some guy,and i liked how it wasn't too busy and i was able to have bits of conversation across the shop with the barsita(same amanda who was working months ago) also,this place kinna has this weird community feel,but i think i'm only saying that because there was a woman wearing running gear who was there both times i've been. read more

This is coffee for the coffee people. If you know what you're getting into and appreciate the effort that goes into making a killer drink, you'd appreciate it. For the rest of us, this is an expensive place to get a regular cup of joe. Granted, it will be a really amazing cup of joe. But a cup of joe nonetheless. I really want to like Cafe Grumpy. The staff is nice enough although I always feel like I'm not ordering a drink that's cool enough. I'll never be in the club. Perhaps that's just my perception...I have no real examples of eye rolling or sideways glances to back this up. The space is tiny and there isn't much seating. Not too different than a lot of coffee shops in NYC. Just don't expect to meet a friend here and sit for hours. It's more conducive to getting a cup to go (which is perfect if you're heading to the subway or a stroll in Prospect Park). read more

Latte is good but there is no seating. Also, they do not allow you to use laptops in the few seats that are available.

I was a bit taken aback when I ordered a cappuccino and realized that for my $4 bucks, 8oz is pretty damn tiny. But the thing is, this coffee is damn good. I don't know if its the beans, or the fancy coffee machine, or what, but consistently awesome coffee every time. I tend to drink my coffee with soymilk, which I find gets burnt a lot of the time ( looking at you, Starbucks), but this place manages to never burn it. Lots of foam on the cappuccino too and in a pretty swirly pattern. Yay! read more

The coffee here is fantastic tasting, though a bit on the expensive side. My only complaint is that that this particular location lacks enough tables to sit and lounge at. The space is small and there's only 1 large table that seats 4 people and a few seats at the bar. Not the best of places for meeting some friends and chilling with a cup of coffee. read more

This might be one of very many "specialty coffee" places that I will mark down. Why? It lacks what I feel a coffee shop should have. Decent seating, decent prices, and a more inviting staff. This was more of a bummer for me. Came here last weekend, and I was expecting a delicious Colombian like coffee. Got an iced coffee and a latte to go, the coffee was o-k, nothing special. The latte was a bit better but still not up to par. It was also expensive, $8 for that, wasn't worth it. I most likely will not be returning. read more
