The food wasn't over the top memorable but it was tasty and our server was attentive and very personable. I'd give this place a solid 3.5 stars. Really nice vibe at this restaurant. Service was very quick and friendly for both indoor and outdoor seating. Food was delicious as well. Best duck confit I had during my time in Paris. Well, this is the cafe where I found out you can have too much cheese on a pizza/flatbread. Who knew? Well, it was pretty bad and soggy but the husband had an okay meal. The burger was not well done, but rather medium rare, so I'm not sure why they asked. And yes, it was ordered in French. Not much in the way of vegetarian fare, but had a nice big patio section for people watching. Didn't have any problems with the service but I'm not sure we would stop in again. read more

My family stayed right across the street from Cafe Central for 10 days and much to my sadness we did not go here until our last night. We were blown away by the service! They were so sweet to my daughters (ages 4 and 9). We all agreed it was our best meal in Paris, the food and service. I wish I had stopped in sooner, although we probably wouldn't have eaten anywhere else. I look forward to going again the next time we are in Paris. Stopped in here late for a nightcap and was happy that I did. I'd been in London before and was used to bars closing at 11 PM, so it was nice to find this place open at the same time (I later learned that most cafes in Paris stay open late). I sat at the bar and the bartender spoke just enough English to take my order. I had a glass of red wine and a whisky sour (not at the same time). The wine was OK, not chilled or anything special. Just plain red wine. The whisky sour was pretty good but didn't really taste like whisky. The atmosphere was cool though, it was a good place to sit and people watch as well as to relax a bit. The only real negative was when the bartender asked me to switch seats so he could talk to his friends. But what can you do. read more

GET THE SNAILS You'll thank me. Best I've had in Paris. Giant and full of delicious pesto. Flip the empty shell over and let it drain out. Sop it up with the bread. Surprisingly filling for 6 snails and bread. They bring out olives and extra bread as well. Their Sancerre is divine as well. They lost a star for publicly mocking a fellow American, however. My French (and quietness) serves me well. I don't stand out as an American. While I understand that we're not currently being a great world leader, I found it disgusting that the wait staff felt it necessary to mock someone because she dropped a fork "It's okay, we prepared for clumsy Americans!" and then made fun of her in French. Dinner here was the perfect end to my Epic Fail Day, Paris Edition. Everything I wanted to see was either closed or blocked by a prohibitive line; after not being able to get a table at three different restaurants that we actually wanted to eat at, we found ourselves freezing and starving in front of Café Central and figured, "eh, why not." To be fair: we were tourists, and this was a tourist trap. They snared us fair and square. Food was straight-up bad: I had the beef with foie gras sauce, my husband had the lamb chops, and our companion had the duck confit. All were flavorless and dry. My beef was such a crappy, over-cooked cut that I gave up trying to chew my way through it and just dipped bread in the foie gras sauce, which was at least okay. The lamb chops were so tiny and sad that it was almost worth their astronomical €36 price tag to see the look of dismay on my husband's face when they arrived. Never has a hungry man looked so heartbroken. The inhumanity! All of our dishes came with potatoes. The mashed potatoes were the only palatable ones among them, so after a while we started dipping everything (including the sad french fries and my massively over-seasoned Potato Balls) in them. Laughing over mashed potato-dipped french fries saved the meal...until we got the bill. The bill for three entrees, two carafes of wine, and one lonely hunk of cheese (which was supposed to accompany a meat plate, but the flaky waiter forgot that part) was €134. !!!!!!!! I totally don't mind paying that much for a good meal, but this was essentially the French equivalent of eating at Cracker Barrel. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. read more

Although Paris was one of my favorite places to visit on my recent Europe trip, with all its great foods and great sights, its places like these that unless I forgotten, it puts a damper on that almost perfect memory of a place. Cafe Central.....where all the glory surrounds around its happy hour. Yes, its good for cheap beers and drinks, but the food sucks. I recall almost nothing of my traveling friends' foods and all the bad things about mine. The service was lacking, granted service in Paris isn't always the best for Americans, but still. Neglect and rolling of the eyes and deep sighs are certainly not customer friendly antics. I had the "the "minced beef with egg" which perhaps is my naivety but came out pretty much in the form of a burger patty with an egg. And to top it off.....it was dry and flavorless. I would have at least liked some flavor, but this one wasn't there. Each time I took a bite, I looked over across the street to Cafe du Marche and wish I was eating something over there. One of my friends had the French Onion Soup which was ok and perhaps the better dish out of the 4 of us, but aside from the drink, its nothing worth remembering about. I enjoyed visiting Cafe Central several times during my recent trip to Paris (it was a block from my hotel). It has charming outdoor seating, a perfect spot for people watching on the bustling Rue Cler. The ambience is fun and lively, and although other reviewers have been describing it as touristy, everyone around us was speaking French. Because I wasn't feeling very adventuresome, I only had the basic fare, i.e., an American hamburger and a pasta dishes, but I was satisfied with every meal. I don't want to OVERstate how much I liked it -- it's just a French cafe with standard menu items. This is a wonderful place to eat dinner in Paris. The host spoke English & was very kind. The waiter was probably the best waiter we had on our entire France trip. He was polite & attentive. We ordered French onion soup. It was the best flavored onion soup with cheese & toppings & onions melted over the top. My husband said it was the best he ever had. It was wonderful. We also ordered a huge salad with goat cheese melted on toast. Fresh ingredients & delicious. We ordered pizza with mushrooms & bacon & other veggies. It was a thin crusted pizza, rectangular shape pizza loaded with so many fresh ingredients & it had so MUCH FLAVOR. That was the best pizza we had in France. The wine was also very good. The ambience was excellent as that's what first drew our attention the restaurant, in that regard you won't be disappointed. I can only speak for the breakfast which was very good. We stayed a few doors down at the Hotel Relais Bosquet and walked down to Rue Cler for breakfast. This was the first spot and the menu looked great so we decided to give it a try. I had the eggs Benedict which was probably one of the best I've ever had. The hollandaise sauce was delicious and the light mixed greens salad served with it helped cut the richness of the sauce. It was a huge portion. I probably could have shared it. The waiter was nice even though we barely spoke French. Yes service was a bit slow but I've learn that that seem to be the norm for Europe. So yes for the first time in a long time, I actually settled back and enjoyed breakfast rather then rush through it like usual. I agree with David M though. The coffee was quite expensive. read more

Service was as good as anywhere in Paris. Remember that you are not in the USA. They spoke enough English to be understood and we did our best to speak French (I.e. merci, bonjour....) I had the central omlette. GREAT. Not an American style omlette. The egg was a little runny but I didn't mind. Organic eggs, bacon, cheese and a tomato sauce (a little sweeter than in USA). The side salad was very good. Wifey had the arugula salad w bacon chunks. Very nice presentation. You have to make your own dressing (olive oil & vinegar) we both really liked it.
