The Cactus Patch is a local landmark in East Ventura County. Its picturesque location on High Street in Moorpark near the train station is a slice of authentic Americana. While the storefront itself is nothing special, it has a combination of atmosphere, friendly service and history, which will take you back to a simpler time. Early morning locals chat about the weather and city politics, swapping jabs, jokes and tall tales. It has a real breakfast bar, like the cafes and watering holes we remember from childhood. The decor is old, tacky and amusing, consisting of western motif yard sale items combined with pictures and memorabilia. It is rich in character, which is why it has such a loyal local following. The food is only average, so don't expect gourmet cooking. Simple eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, pancakes and a few extras, but nothing extraordinary. Most people don't come here to be wowed by how fluffy the omelettes are or how perfect the biscuits and gravy are. Food is of course the main event, but it's not the whole picture. It seats about 40 people, and they have fenced outdoor seating which is great under the pepper trees. The service is very good, and adequate street-side parking make this a favorite meeting spot for clubs and groups. They open at 7:00 AM and only serve breakfast and lunch - no dinner. This is the kind of place that if not for Yelp, I probably would never have discovered. It's on a small, quaint street in Old Town Moorpark. Although it may seem busy and frenetic when you first walk in, if you just hang out a while, you'll find that it's not that crazy and you can easily seat yourself at the counter or in a little while tables clear up fast. FIrst impression, walked in and no eye contact or greeting by any of the staff. Not the best first impression, but I got the feeling during the breakfast rush the survival mode kicks in and unfortunately service suffers. We sat ourselves at the bar and at that point we were acknowledged by several people who took our beverage order and placed silverware down for us. Sitting at the counter is a quick and easy way to eat, but I wouldn't recommend it because you're in a major high traffic area and staff have to go behind the counter to get beverages and run food, so the energy is definitely high paced and not very relaxing. The redeeming thing was that their food was actually quite good. I ordered the Popeye Omelette and the combination of spinach, bacon, cheese and touch of mushrooms was great. The hash browns were very diner style (typical shredded potato, crispy outside, cooked soft inside) but in a good way and not too oily. My husband ordered the biscuits and eggs and being from the South, he was not impressed. The biscuit was very doughy and dense, not light or flaky. Still, the quaint neighborhood feel of this restaurant and the Popeye Omelette make it a worthwhile place to check out for some morning grub. read more

Never do I feel inclined to write a poor review. However, my experience this morning was unusually sad. My boyfriend and I walked in and stood at the front waiting to be seated, one of the hosts looked around and told us there was one booth left in the very corner if we wanted it. Thinking he would follow us with menus, we sat down. No one bothered bringing us. After about 15 min, my boyfriend walked up to the front to ask for menus. One of the servers was actually apologetic and brought them to us right away (he was the best thing about our experience) We ordered our food and 50 min later our food came. We ordered eggs and hash browns....the eggs were still watery because they were undercooked. Could've stayed home and made myself a better breakfast. I am completely bewildered at the 4 star avg this place has. It's to the point I seriously think I went to the wrong one (except yes, I was at the right place). Came in when only 3 other tables were around. I think I must've come in right before the breakfast to lunch switch. Anyhow, the entire experience was awful. Ordered their breakfast special (4 strips bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy). The only nice thing I can say was that their eggs were cooked as ordered. The guy completely forgot the biscuits and gravy which I had to ask for and it was probably the worst biscuits and gravy I've had. I know people make grand statements when they're disappointed and over exaggerate but I'm pretty sure I'm sticking w/ this one. Biscuits were completely flat, stale, and the gravy was lukewarm and I couldn't see any sausage pieces. If you think this is the best biscuits and gravy you've ever had, I urge you to go to Wood Creek Cafe in Jamestown. Or even Eggs N Things. Anyhow, 2 other tables complained during our visit. One guy went up to the counter and said something was wrong w/ his cream and asked for another coffee. There was another table where the guy seemed upset that they were taking so long in getting his sourdough toast. At one point he yelled out "What are you guys doing over there? Smoking hash?" (I kid you not- this happened. I'm not trying to be funny). Then there was the issue of the ant we saw in the salt shaker. I guess I can see the charm if you're a regular. From the sub-par food to the waitress who loudly said, "if they can't speak English, they should get the ____ out", this Restraunt wasn't my favorite. My biscuits and gravy came out lukewarm, giving me only about a bite to "enjoy" it before it was cold. Others in my party got their food completely cold. Well, it wasn't very good anyway so not a total loss. The home fries weren't bad, but they weren't seasoned at all - just cooked potatoes. Our waiter was friendly, and informative about menu items. He was the only redeeming thing about our visit. There were flies all over the restraunt, and even some patrons at the counter mentioned they had to cover their food to avoid the flies landing on it. There were three flying around our table. I can't imagine how many there were throughout the restraunt. The decor is western, which isn't bad - it's kind of standard for the area. Although many crooked pictures and clutter make it look far older than it really is. It's fairly clean, though. I ran my hand along a windowsill and there was a little dust, but it seems like just what's been collected over maybe a day or two. While our waiter was kind, the rest of our experience wasn't impressive. The unprofessional waitress who made comments about speaking English should definitely keep in mind the demographic of the area she's working in and maybe show some appreciation for her paying guests. If she was just joking with a regular, she should make sure to keep in mind the others in ear shot. read more

My work out partners and I have visited The Cactus Patch three Sunday's in a row with today being the absolute last time. The first visit there were some minor hiccups with the service, nothing to egregious but still off putting. When we were served the food it was brought out in a completely unordered manner and the wait staff had some trouble serving the right order to the correct parties. This is not a huge deal but the waitress gave us attitude over this and some unwelcomed sassy remarks that were not in good fun. The food was honestly really good so we overlooked this and returned next week for Sunday brunch. On our second visit there was again confusion with delivering our orders, but also they made a mistake in one our orders and also forgot another orders side. Not a huge deal but again, slightly off putting. The food was noticeably not as good the second visit. Today's visit was the final straw. Same issues with delivering our food, but this time even worse and the server (who we later learned was apparently the "manager" as well) also completely took one of our orders down wrong, then proceeded to argue with us and insist that was what was ordered, which it most certainly was not. I don't go out to eat to be argued with, and we should not be made to feel like we are inconveniencing the wait staff for kindly asking them to do their job. We made no unreasonable demands and not once were we rude or aggressive, but received only that in response from the staff. Lastly, we learned today they have a new chef and it showed as the food was mediocre at best today. Now there is no reason to come back. read more

I'm only giving it two stars bc I felt too guilty clicking only one. When I first moved to the area, my roommates and I went to breakfast and this is where they took me. I was excited when we pulled up and saw that it was an old, mom and pop kind of place! I love little hole in the wall type places. Loved the down home, old coffee diner feel. I believe I got something like bacon and eggs and I was so disappointed! Worst food ever! I always order o'brian potatoes with bfast and so that's what I ordered. Total joke!
