The trip to Moor Park from the SFV is not too bad, a pleasurable ride, on the smooth 118 (around 20 minutes if you keep within the speed limits), and judiciously choose the time to travel. I came here to try out California Bun, an eatery that has harnessed an interesting (long overdue) concept, to package portable food. Here they prepare snack sized bites (or a little more) of favorite food fancies, enveloped in a daily fresh baked round brioche bun. The store is high ceiling, spacious and large, with ample space to dine in or carry out. It is a mom and pop joint, that is slowly but surely, beginning to make a mark. On the main wall, elegantly displayed, are all the many enticing varieties, for the day. My visit was designed to take something to go. The conundrum here is, what to order, because there were so many inviting choices that were talking to you. I finally decided to select three of these evenly browned and differently topped buns. The El Sabroso (Egg, cheddar & jack cheese, bacon & Jalapeno salsa, garnished with Cheese, bacon & jalapeño). The Roadside Burger (Seasoned ground beef, grilled onions, white American cheese, & secret house burger sauce, garnished with Cheese & bacon). The Mac Daddy (Creamy mac and cheese with a cheddar, jack, and parmesan cheese blend, garnished with Panko bread crumbs). So whats the verdict? The Mac Daddy was my least favorite. In comparing the other two, the Roadside Burger seemed to have the higher of (inside filling/inside bread) ratio, as compared to the El Sabroso. However, the latter is the most attractive bun on the outside and overall, contains a good mix of flavors and slight kick. Any food with a visible Jalapeño is a magnet, for me. Still, this concoction needs more of the egg mixture, to achieve the right balance. In general, all 3 buns were soft, had a nice texture, bread taste and chew. There's a large plaza lot to get here. There's indoor and outdoor seating. It's really chill and has a casual atmosphere. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food arrived a bit delayed but it was due to a mix up. But the food was still hot. The eatzza pizza was pretty good, basically a small calzone. The chorizo con huevo were alright. I wished there was more kick to the Chorizo taste, it was subtle in it's flavor. The philly cheez as also pretty good. The price is bit higher than I'd prefer. The buns are a fun novelty, and would be great to grab on the go! I enjoyed the biscuits and gravy flavor the best out the three options I chose. Unfortunately, I did have a pretty bad ordering experience. While the staff were super friendly, our order was forgotten about! This was the first visit, so I wasn't too sure how long it should take to get our food. However, I started to notice that people who came in after us were receiving their food before us. I had to go up and ask after about 20 minutes and both staff members assumed the other had already given us our order. This pickup process could definitely be improved. There is plenty of seating and plenty of parking, but it's not a very cozy space. It does not feel like they want customers to linger here. read more

I took my Daughter to try this place because we were curious about it since we keep hearing good things about it. Upon entering the place was really clean and we were headed there for breakfast so we opted to order a jalapeño bite to try the spicy levels which it wasn't that spicy and I'm on the weaker end of spice handling. We also tried the steak peppers and egg bun and the mac & cheese bun with the cinnamon iced latte and the Taro lavender milk drink. I just have a jalapeño bite and the cinnamon iced latte and both were splendid. The jalapeño bite was just the right amount of kick and I soothe the spice with the ice latte which was just the right amount of sugar coffee blend. I will come back to try more options, but it was just kind of a quick stop for us this time. The buns were very fresh and soft and the drink was delicious. It's decorated in modern butcher-block tables and rustic wooden chairs with orange accented cushions. Very appealing, filled with pleasant background music. I had a two-bun combo -- Philly beef and cheese for one, steak and eggs for the other, which includes one side and their refreshing hand-mixed drinks (the Arnold Palmer is perfect for a warm day). For a side I selected the fruit cup, which is generous and artistic (see photo). The buns are not Asian-style Bao buns, but rather hard-shell brioche with a thin crust and plentiful filling. This texture combination is wonderful. This combo was plenty for an adult meal, and I left fully satisfied. I'll be back for more! read more

I was in the area, and I had to try this place. First off, the place is huge - too big. It was practically empty, but I don't understand why they have so many tables. It almost seemed like it was a bar/restaurant. I got a box of 6, which I felt was the best deal - these aren't cheap. Overall, they were great and very filling. We decided to try California Bun for breakfast since we like to patronize our local eateries. The restaurant was quaint, clean and very friendly. The entire staff behind the counter greeted us with a smile and friendly hospitality. My husband had The Farm Boy with waffle fries and I had the Chorizo Con Huevos with tater tots. I can say by far my choice with the tater tots were spectacular. The buns were good as well. I read that some thought it was not spicy enough, but I was happy with the flavors along with the yummy tater tots. We just had one each, sounds like some have several each. I was very content with my bun and tater tots. There were enough tater that I hesitantly shared some with hubby, but really wanted to have them all to myself!! Very glad to have finally tried out this bun shop in the 805. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable with the menu. The location has plenty of indoor and a few outdoor seats. Parking lot is shared in a shopping center. The food was good and fresh. I t was a little disappointing that they could not replenish some of there products while we were willing to wait for it. We showed up around 11:00 am for an early lunch and they were out of Lil Links. Those are small enough to make more of and my kids were willing to wait for them, but they refused to make more. Both were good but I really enjoyed the farm boy! Tempted to try other breakfast buns now. I did order an additional dozen buns to go. I went with a wide variety and tried a lot of flavors. My personal rankings: 1) Boomtown - like a Costco chicken bake on steroids 2) BBQ with Seoul - complimenting flavors and textures. Mmm 3) Farm Boy - breakfast bomb. Located in the Tuscany Square Shopping Center in Moorpark, California Bun just opened in December and the food looked good online so we decided to give it a shot. There's patio seating out front but plenty of seating inside (quite spacious). There were only a handful of people inside so finding a seat wasn't an issue. You order at the counter and go pick it up once your order is ready. We ordered 4 buns - BBQ with Seoul, Southern BBQ, Boomtown and Mac Daddy. They were served in a bag on a tray so there's no way of knowing which bun is which until you cut into it. To be honest, all the buns were very dry. Wish we knew that beforehand - we would've ordered some sauce to go along with them (but they charge extra for that; ketchup packets are for free btw). Surprised even the mac & cheese was more noodles and not very cheesy/creamy at all. My better half thought all the buns could've used more seasoning and noted that the buns should've been hotter since they weren't very warm even though we ate them there. The buns aren't very big so they're more snacks than an actual meal. Overall we thought California Bun was meh. We certainly wouldn't go out of our way to go there. Napkins, utensils, salt/pepper and ketchup are self-serve next to the refrigerated drinks. I'd rate them a 3.5/5 but rounded up to 4 since they're still a new business so there's going to be some kinks to work out. You can order ahead online, but they're not very busy so coming in shouldn't be a problem. read more

Yum! I came across California Bun strictly by chance - I was actually looking at a local coffee shop. However, I'm so glad that I stopped by. California Bun is a relatively new establishment located in a large plaza in Moorpark. No issues with finding a place to park. I walked in and was immediately impressed by the clean layout and inviting array of buns in display. They all looked delicious but I ended up picking the BBQ with Seoul, based on recommendation. The bun was very savory and really hit the spot! I waited about ten minutes for the fresh bun to be warm and ready, and the wait was definitely worth it. The size of the bun is enough for a solid snack, so I would order at least two if you are hungry. Servers were welcoming and friendly. We were greeted by Jayden who patiently explained the breakfast buns to us. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. I ordered a Farm Boy bun and a Chorizo con Huevo bun ($5.50 each) plus a small freshly brewed coffee ($2.75). Each bun was quite good (though I liked the farm boy a bit more).
