First time going to this location. I think I have been to a Cactus Grill before, but I believe that may have been in the days before Yelp! This location is NOT a Mexican restaurant. It is an upscale restaurant that serves Mexican-style food. So, let's break this down. The food - Wow... just amazing. The chips and salsa are some of the best (freshest) I have ever had. They tasted like someone was in the back making them while we walked in... hmmm... maybe they were!!! The service - Fantastic! We were greeted immediately upon walking in the door. The gal even asked if we were ok to wait while she seated the people in front of us. One of the kindest "please hold"s I've ever come across. We were then seated upon her return, and our waitress was with us within moments just to make sure we had menus and waters. Her timing was fantastic from that point on. The Ambiance - Ok, I like a restaurant to have some character. But there is such a thing as cluttered. This place did it right. There is enough decor and stuff to be interesting. We managed to get a reservation & seated just before HH ended. Began our experience with a spicy marg, Espinaca (free with coupon), chips & fresh salsa. Per usual I manage to satisfy my hunger with those items. Our new server couldn't make any suggestions. after some time of looking at all the choices, I decided on the Margherita Chicken. It has two good size breast each topped with 3 cherry tomatoes, a thick slice of mozzarella cheese, chimchurri sauce & drizzled with balsamic vinegarette with side of corn. We signed up for the "wait list" from home, and when we arrived were seated within minutes. Varied menu, with many options. We were served chips/salsa first thing, and the second batch was provided without even being asked (salsa GREAT!!). Tasty meal--we were not disappointed. The only reason for the loss of a star was that we had to frequently ask for refills on our drinks. The glasses were so full of ice, our beverages were emptied quickly. Many staff & managers-- it was always easy to flag someone for assistance. Many TV's and well-lit dining room. As an additional kudo--there was an accidental spill by a manager onto our table/us. The ceilings are high, so the ambient noise can amp up a bit during busy times. But the patio area faces northwest and there is ample space out there in good weather, so if you're noise-sensitive, then you may have options. Pro tip: join the wait list online and get texted when you're en route to give you an idea of seating availability. What a beautiful location!!! We came in for happy hour with a group of 6 and immediately was greeted and seated at 3 pm. Waters were immediately served and we were constantly checked on. Their happy hour menu has great options and their full menu has an unbeatable selection. Prices are great. We started with the espinanca dip and tried out the Wednesday jalapeño chicken fajitas to split. The dip was delicious and creamy. The fajitas were good - however when they came out they seemed like they had been sitting there a bit and had to wait extra time for the tortillas to come out. They were tasty - however I wish they were served hot. Overall - food was delicious and loved the atmosphere of the new place! Can't wait to come back and check out more. My chicken morita enchilada plate ($8 Tue lunch special) was served 12 minutes after I ordered at the bar, where the service was attentive, friendly and helpful with a satisfaction check from a manager - nice! I enjoyed the complimentary thin, crispy chips with plenty of somewhat chunky, mild to medium salsa. Everything was very tasty, including the moist and fluffy cilantro-lime rice, but more refried beans would have been nice. The dining area had a mix of booths and tables, plenty of natural light, a good variety of background music, ten TVs in the dining area and a full bar with four more TVs and four beers on tap. Beautiful setup!! We stopped in for a lunch. It was not too busy which was nice. Love their fresh chips and salsa that are brought immediately to the table. We snagged an order of the queso for the little people. They loved it shhh don't tell them it has spinach in it LOL. Main course we had the Pollo Magnifico. I know they are a different brand of jose peppers so it should be the same. However, this version of Pollo Magnifico was the best I've had. The chicken was perfectly season a black pepper forward spice was perfectly paired with the jalapeño cream cheese. Overall, we really enjoyed this experience and being closer to home makes it that much easier to put this in our family outings for "chips and cheesy dip." Great job to this location! read more

I went to the Cactus Grill on a Friday night, and it was pretty busy. We sat outside, and did enjoy the patio. The service was not super attentive (an appetizer order was forgotten and didn't get many refreshers on our drinks/water), but this could have been due to the dinner rush. I ordered the steak and goat cheese enchiladas, and the steak was very, very tough. I'm not sure if it was cooking style, how it was cut, or if it just wasn't fresh enough. The other parts of the enchilada were very good though. We ordered the espinaca con queso, which I thought was very good. The complementary salsa was also very good. Overall, I'd be willing to give Cactus Grill a try if it's outside of busy hours to see how it compares. read more

Definitely was not clearly marked as such. I got sangria and it was fine, it just took a really long time to get as well as the food. The young server did an Ok job, but it seems they might need some more experience. The grilled chicken tacos were edible. I got the side of street corn and it tasted gross and like canned corn. Decided to try out cactus grill for lunch after church on Sunday. Their website has a wait list which said seating for even our party of 6 was under a minute, and that was surprisingly correct. We did have a baby in a car seat which we had to finagle into the booth the sat us at, but once she was there there was enough room for two adults beside her. I tried the guacamole appetizer which was fresh and had good flavor. I especially liked the pickled red onion. For my entree I had the combo #4 which was a chicken tamale, a cheese enchilada, and a crispy beef taco. The taco was ok - the shell was chewy in places and there wasn't a ton of flavor. The cheese enchilada was slightly better, the sauce could have used a bit more spice. My favorite in the plate was the chicken tamale with cream sauce. The chicken was shredded nicely and had a good kick of spice and the cream sauce really complimented it. I also really enjoyed the refried beans. The "desert rice" was not fully cooked and I didn't love the flavor. Overall it was a good meal and there were parts of it that I thoroughly liked and would eat again. read more

Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and attentive. I recommend ordering the jalapeño spicy marg, espinaca dip, and steak & goat cheese enchiladas. The jalapeño spicy marg was a great balance of sweet and spicy. The espinaca dip was truly soooo yummy; it had a nice kick to it and a creamy texture. The steak and goat cheese enchiladas were a unique combo and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also like their chipotle aioli and the House Jose Pepper hot sauce. Perfect place of you're craving Tex-Mex. The service was SLOW and it wasn't that busy so not sure why, maybe just getting their grounding still?!?! The food was great. I'm a big Jose fan but never order their fish tacos because they are mahi Mahi and I'm not a fan of Mahi, but Cactus has cod tacos and they were amazing. My first question? Why is everything so sweet? My wife and I decided to try a new offering in our neighborhood, Cactus Grill. We attempted to visit last Saturday, but the wait time was over an hour. Wow! With wait times like that, it must be great, right? Read on... We arrived close to 8pm on a Tuesday. I'd say the restaurant was maybe 1/3rd full. Not busy at all in my mind. We had perused the menu prior to our visit and really wanted to try the steak and goat cheese pinwheels. While generous with the steak, we found them sorely lacking in goat cheese, and overwhelmed by the sweetness of the jalapeño jam. We ordered our cocktails (two different flavors of frozen margaritas - more on that later) and waited for our entrees. My wife had their California fish tacos, and I opted for the taco burrito con queso. The fish tacos were the star of the show - my wife quite enjoyed them. I was disappointed by the soggy mess that was my burrito plate. The tortilla was, for lack of a better term, just too wet on the plate side. Swimming in queso, and served with Cactus' so-called "desert" rice - which, if I'm being honest (why stop now?) tasted more like an Indian curry rice than anything that should be served in a Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant. It wasn't bad...it just seemed out of place to me, flavor-wise. The refried beans had that sort of "been on the plate too long" crust across the top, though they were flavored just fine. Ok, so what about the margaritas? Well, we got our entrees well before they ever arrived. Our server came by the table to see how we were doing, and we alerted her to this - after which she went to the bar. Now, I don't know if our margs were dispensed and left to die at the pass, or if she had forgotten to put the order in, or if the bar had failed to put them out for service in a timely manner, but a frozen margarita should arrive at your table still frozen, right? My strawberry marg was still mostly frozen, if I'm being generous...but my wife's Mambo margarita just as well have been on the rocks - there was barely any slushy properties left to what was in the glass. Remember, this place was only about 1/3rd full...and there was more than just our server working. Will we try it again? Well, I don't know. We've read other reviews about service being kind of slow...which I can understand on a fully booked Saturday night...but on a random Tuesday? Service was just. Too. Slow. I found the food to be ok...that's it. Ok. The "cilantro rice" side with my wife's tacos was kind of amusing...it was literally a pile of plain white rice, with some (barely) chopped cilantro laid atop the pile. For 2 people with an appetizer, cocktails and an entree each, our total bill was almost exactly $75. There's a local Mexican place closer to our house that we like a lot, but we wanted to give the new place a try. Having done that, I'm pretty sure we'll be sticking with our old favorite when the mood for Mexican/Tex-Mex strikes. read more

The server was attentive and came over quickly and took our drink order. They have very good salsa and chips. The restaurant is clean and modern. We both ordered the dinner portion, even though the lunch portion was available. The negative is that the lunch portion only had one of the main item and the dinner portion has two. My husband ordered the shrimp tacos with black beans and cilantro rice. I had the traditional cheese and onion enchiladas with refried beans and Spanish rice. Both meals came out quickly and were good. I do feel like there might've been a tad too much cheese in the traditional enchiladas, but they were very filling. My husband liked the shrimp tacos. The prices are reasonable. The only thing that I thought was negative was that the music was overly loud and distracting. We have been to the Leawood location and loved it, so we were excited to bring our adult children to the Lenexa location for birthdays. Went on the waitlist at 5:50 for 5 people with the intention of meeting at 6:30 and it said the current wait was 10 minutes. After getting on the list I called because I was concerned our reservation would come up before we arrived. They told me they were starting to get crowded. We were staying at the hotel across the street so we went over right away. The parking lot was packed, and so was the small lobby. We checked in at 6:10, and at 6:30 when I inquired on the status was told there was still two large parties ahead of us. Something must have happened because they got us seated right afterwards. Other than that, the food and service were excellent. We will be back, but probably not this location. read more
