After a fiercely competitive middle-aged adult kickball game, our crew ambled into this little Mexican joint with a kickball-sized appetite. We were originally hoping to score a table outside so the "essence of our athletic auras" wouldn't offend the general public, but the patio was packed, so we abided and took the indoor seating. ​We were a semi-sizable lineup of about 10 to 12 deep. Our server was incredibly friendly, but it was only her third day on the job, so we willingly cut her some slack. It did take about five innings to get my jalapeño margarita, but when it finally arrived, it absolutely hit the spot--perfect balance of heat and refreshing. ​After mowing down roughly 10 rounds of chips and salsa across the table, we moved into the late-lunch innings of the meal. I ordered the lunch chimichanga, which came paired with cilantro rice and refried beans. Flavor-wise, it was pretty tasty, but it definitely leaned more "burrito" than "chimi"--any crispiness it started with must have melted on the journey from the kitchen to the table. ​On the bright side, one of our teammates ordered the fish tacos, which looked incredible. But for me, the real MVP of the table was the guacamole. This Cactus Grill location has been around for a LONG time and when I rolled in for lunch with some old friends it really hit me that I hadn't been here since probably high school. That being said, I really had no baseline and no memory of what it was like so I went in with an open mind. Yelp reviews here are all over the place, and it's a local tex mex chain so I felt like the experience could be really just about anything. That being said, I was really happy with my lunch visit! I had a lunch combo of a taco and an enchilada and it hit the spot. The food was hot, tasted great, and came out in a reasonable amount of time. The service was also really friendly and prompt. First the host at 4 pm had no energy or personality. He put us in the bar area. I NEVER had the worse tasting or foul smelling ice tea in my life. It had a sewer odor. We were seated at table 23 and Lillian took great care of us. She was professional, prompt and most knowledgeable with the menu. I was THRILLED when the new Cactus Grill location opened in Lenexa, as it's close to my house, but sadly it left the original CG in the dust. I went to lunch at the Leawood location late one afternoon and left disappointed. It took so long time to be greeted at the door we wondered if they were closed. We saw people eating at a few booths so we stuck it out and waited. Once seated we met our server. I won't say he was rude, but he was not friendly-at-all. He never said hello, thank you, or even smiled. I know he had the capability of smiling because I saw him laughing with a coworker. Our food took an unusually long amount of time considering how empty the restaurant was, but I was excited to eat my favorite item on the menu....in my estimation it would be worth the wait. It was not. The crab and shrimp enchiladas I have grown to love at the Lenexa location were honestly disgusting at this restaurant. The shrimp was "shrimpy" and seemed a little undercooked. I didn't eat them. The enchilada itself was swimming in grease. It was all very unappetizing. Thankfully Cactus Grill has incredible chips and salsa and a dynamite Jalapeño margarita that saved the day. After this visit I think I will stick to the newer shinier location instead. read more

All my stars are for the service. We had a great server, according to our receipt, her name was Lexa. We were there with a friend who sometimes is a little high maintenance at restaurants and our server was very polite during her little bouts of "weirdness". Teehee. The food didn't take very long considering they were pretty busy and were pumping out tons of take out orders. The quesadilla looked great, but I think the quesadilla was the only thing that really got eaten. My skirt steak was almost more like a slimy pot roast that maybe got grilled a bit. The meaty texture was cooked out of it and it was just buried in toppings that were way too much. Honestly everything on the plate was buried in something to the point of being unidentifiable. I took a big bite of the rice and was so disappointed that all it tasted like is curry. The corn was ruined, over cooked just mushy buried under toppings. The ranchero type beans were very tasty but buried in pico de gallo. It was just all kind of overcooked and over dressed. Mom didn't really care for her shrimp tacos. She probably should have ordered things on the side like the sauce. We did all kind of pick through and eat the shrimp. The batter was not great. We just kind of left half-ful plates of food. This is one story that has to be told given the fact that I have been going to Cactus Grill at 119th row for 13 years I took my dad there for a late lunch early dinner. we both had one taco each with the side of beans to share and we ordered a side of masa. Everything seems to be going fine until the meal took about 25 minutes for two tacos and no one seemed to be concerned about that fair enough. The meal came we ate the girl who brought the meal was different from who took the order. I asked her for spoons for the beans And she came back with two plastic spoons. Seriously, two plastic spoons. I asked her if she could please bring real silverware and she explained to me that we would have to get a whole new roll up and I said well when we got this roll up we didn't have spoons so can you please just go get two spoons. She was very confused and finally figured out what to do and she got us two spoons so I then asked her if she could please bring us extra salsa back, along with extra hot salsa. That seemed to be a big task as she ran away from the table before I was even finished speaking. I finally said to her don't worry it seems like you're really busy. There was no one else in the restaurant. Bottom line is we did get real spoons and at the end of the day the server never came back to present a check. I was still standing at the host desk waiting for my check when they were cleaning up the table that we ate at And someone finally came up. I told them what happened and they said we'll pay for it. It was served warm, with no complaints at all. It wasn't packed, but it was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The chips are my favorite, thin and crispy.
