    Cioppino
    Sean R.

Feels/looks quite fancy w/ seasonal rotating locally sourced menu & dim lighting I kind of thought it would be another expensive pretentious Portland restaurant but everything was reasonably priced for very quality food in a nice atmosphere. - The wrapped shrimp with glass noodles was much better than I thought as well - I was expecting spring rolls but it came w/ 3 jumbo juicy shrimp w/ a light crunch atop Korean japchae style glass noodles which was different but paired very well. - Cioppino: full of fresh variety of seafood including couple crab legs, mussels, shrimp & squid. The broth itself was a little light but delicious w/ the bread. - Ling Cod: very tender and flaky served atop some mashed taters & veg w/ a light fresh sauce, but nothing too mind-blowing flavor wise. - Tres leches cake was delicious w/ fresh tart berries. I don't normally mention service but the older gentleman who served us was very professional & on point. One disappointment is they got rid of their lamb sirloin plate I was very much looking forward to trying from pics & replaced w/ lamb ragú pasta which didn't seem worth ordering.

The ambience is lovely. Nice low lighting and beautiful blown glass jellyfish chandeliers. The food was delicious. We had the paddlefish caviar appetizer. It was small but had incredible flavor. I ordered the cioppino which was packed with seafood, my only wish was that the crab legs were opened for me, it was a little messy to open soupy crab legs. My partner had the seasonal grouper, which was very flavorful and filling. I highly recommend Cabezon.

A time honored place that feels fresh and contemporary but trusted and true. We were able to make a reservation online about an hour before we wanted to eat. As soon as we arrived we were greeted and seated. Service was excellent, noise level perfect, it was comfortable and approachable. Everything we ordered was delicious! We had: Cioppino - plentiful and flavorful. Slightly spicy. Monkfish - really delicious, perfectly prepared. Mussels - slightly indulgent with all those fries and chorizo. Gorgeous broth. Generous portion. Even got a complimentary scoop of ice cream for my mom's birthday. Very nice!

This is a special place. The menu rotates to what is in season and is carefully curated to perfection. We made reservations earlier in the day and adjusted them to add to more friends easily. The staff quickly accommodated. The service was flawless. Water was continuously, refilled drinks checked on, recommendations made, and all the food came out perfectly timed. The staff was on point and kept the flow of the evening seamless. We enjoyed a variety of delectable dishes that tantalized each one of us.

Had a nice time at Cabezon! The ambiance was nice. We were seated quickly and the staff were friendly. We seriously tried almost some of everything...Caviar, Pork chops, Steak, Cioppino, Scallops, Oysters, and more. We also tried the cheese platter and marinated olives. I really enjoyed the Scallops and Oysters. My dining companions enjoyed their food as well. The portion sizes were generous, the service was good, and I would definitely go back again.

Service was excellent and the food was okay. I can tell lots of care and love goes into the food which is really great but the flavor profile of the duck was just off. It wasn't tender and had a really smoky flavor, was a bit too salty for me as well, I had to offset it by eating the dull flavor of the tart and had to wash down the rest with water. Maybe I just got a salty leg this day? The port wine strawberry jus was a really great touch and the duck skin was incredibly thin and crispy which was delicious. I also ordered the chocolate pot de crème, it was a bit grittier than I had expected but the flavor was nice. My husband ended up eating what I couldn't finish and he loved it.

I heard how amazing the food and overall experience was at Cabezon from a foodie friend so I made reservations for 6 a couple weeks before we got to Portland for our visit to the University of Portland. The time came and we arrived to a really cool place, neat decor, comfortable and homey feeling. We were greeted by a very nice woman who gave us a place to sit and delivered our drink order very quickly while we waited for our table. Table was ready quick, our waiter was awesome and we quickly had apps on our table. I am a commercial fisherman from San Diego, so my seafood standards are very high. The mussels were great, shrimp bisque were excellent, the shrimp app was ridiculously well paired. The cheddar mac and cheese was rich and tender. 5 of us ordered the chopino and 1 ordered the lamb sirloin. They were both AMAZING. The chopino just kept giving, the juice was so good we got more bread to soak it up. We all agreed we will go to this place every single time we visit our kids up in Portland. The entire experience was 5 stars from start to finish. I will add the prices are very reasonable for the quality they are serving. The dessert menu sounded great but we all ate too much so that will be next trip.

Let's begin with the service, because it was superb. The entire staff was so friendly and attentive. Couldn't have asked for better service! The food was good. Definitely over ordered. Mussels and oysters were my favorite. Everything was a bit too salty. Which is why the 4 stars. Otherwise great vibes!

A great place to dine; friendly staff and great service in a cozy dim light ambience. The food was delicious! We will continue to eat here.

Cozy, 'library' dining room with stunning jellyfish light fixtures - just the fix on a cold, rainy night

Warm, cozy farm-to-table spot for carefully prepared Pac NW food. The Basil and Phyllo wrapped shrimp was delicious, and the mussels with chorizo and saffron rouille were absolutely yummy (made a great leftover lunch with some crusty toasted sourdough the next day). The fries were perfectly crisp, and served with truffle aioli. The pork chop, lamb loin, and sea bass were all excellent. The mac and cheese was good, although it came to the table lukewarm (would've been great to have had this steaming on that cold, rainy night). The service was great - very friendly and attentive. Recommend.

    Oysters!!

Found the perfect spot for date night. Went searching on Yelp for fresh oysters and found this cozy restaurant. The atmosphere is intimate and dark with candlelit tables for two, which I loved. Turns out, they are offering 3 kinds of oysters. My date and I tried one of each type, then proceeded to order a dozen of the ones we liked best. Superb! Craving satisfied! I was excited to see Sturgeon Caviar on the menu, since I hadn't tried it before. They served it atop a blini, or small pancake with a touch of crème fraîche (fancy sour cream). FIREWORKS! New fav! Caviar, much like the oysters, has a delicate taste of the sea. A major part of the experience is its texture. There is a tiny "pop" to the individual eggs that releases a fleeting hint of mild salt and slightly creamy ocean-y aftertaste. We also shared some small plates of fried shrimp with peanut noodles, the Caesar salad and finally the Cioppino (seafood stew) entrée. The look of each of the plates were stunning and the flavors of each were SO delicious that we joked about licking the plates clean, but decided to be civilized instead :) Can't wait to become a regular here, and recommend this spot to our friends. PS: Extensive and surprisingly affordable wine list is offered here, as well as champagne and craft cocktails. We were very taken with 'Inner Dream' Pale Ale by a local Portland brewery (Ruse Brewing).

    Ask the Community - Cabezon

Is the dress attire business casual?

    Yes

Is it reasonably quiet? We like to converse with friends when we go out to dinner, and most of the restaurants we've been to lately seem very noisy. A friend said Cabezon is reasonably quiet.

I've been there several times and never found it loud. They do have a private room that you can reserve for larger parties. My advice, make reservations usually gets you a nice table. Good luck and you'll love this restaurant

Special shout out to the kitchen staff for big multitasking energy: watching the game, closing out the place, and firing out some amazing food. Wilder's near-close happy hour offerings were both tasty and generous. Cocktails featured offerings from local distillers that yielded complex flavors but nothing that was "trying too hard" to be artisanal. Also Made my date's night that they were using polenta as a bun.

We walked in at about 6:30pm on a Wednesday night and was kind of greeted by one of the servers. She wasn't too friendly and seemed to be irritated that we said we'd wait for a table as opposed to sitting at the bar. Once seated, that same server came over to try to take our orders and once again seemed irritated that we weren't ready to order. Luckily, another server took over from there and we had a pleasant anniversary meal the rest of the time! Here's everything we tried: Devilish Eggs - This came with 4 deviled eggs and was just okay. The crispy bacon pieces was the best part of this dish! Steak Tartare - This was the main reason we chose this restaurant and we were definitely not disappointed! We spent our first anniversary together in Europe and had so much tartare and this really brought back some wonderful memories for us. The tartare was rich and mustardy, beef flavor was great, and it sort of just melted in your mouth. The crispy chips paired well with the tartare and I can't wait to come back and have this again! Mussels - This was a big bowl of mussels in a white wine garlic sauce with toasted baguettes. Mussels tasted fresh and garlicky with just a bit of funk from whatever cheese they grated on top. The toasted baguettes were so good dipped into that white wine broth. I wish this dish came with skinny fries but it was also so good as is. Would definitely order this again! Field Greens - I asked for this to come out with my meal but it came out about 10 minutes before the entrees came out. It was very light and refreshing. I saved half to have with my meal but most of it was wilted already by the time our mains came out. But it's okay! The fried chicken actually had a small portion of this salad on its plate. I wouldn't have ordered this had I known, so next time will skip the side salad altogether! Fried chicken - I really wanted to like this dish but alas, fried chicken breast is very hard to make juicy. I definitely prefer dark meat because that's harder to mess up. My partner enjoyed it but he doesn't mind dry chicken. The sauces were phenomenal! That mustard sauce was great and the sweet glaze was delicious! The potatoes would have been a lot better if they were smaller to get more of that crust to creamy potato ratio but still okay the way it was. My fiance cleaned this plate up! Brown Butter Cake - This cake was phenomenal! It's hard to mess anything with Brown Butter up so I had really high expectations for this and they certainly did not disappoint. The server was nice enough to throw candles on it since we were celebrating and it really ended our meal on the sweetest note! The restaurant itself is small and cozy. A bit dark and romantic. It really reminded me of the small bistros in France that we frequented while we were out there. We'll definitely be back to try other things on the menu!

There is also an indoor section of this restaurant that has nice upholstered booths and a bar. They also have gender, neutral, restrooms, which were pristine and very well stocked. Service was phenomenal. We were greeted by a lovely young person, who made us aware of the self serve, coffee, and water that was available, then our waiter came and was equally lovely and helpful and gave us great ideas for what to order for breakfast. A third person brought our latte and our breakfast very quickly. They were really on top of everything. I had the vegetable pesto breakfast which came with scrambled eggs and a choice of grits or potato pancake. I had the potato pancake and think it was the right choice. It also came with a giant incredibly delicious buttermilk biscuit. The vegetables themselves were so flavorful that I added no salt or pepper, which is very unusual for me as I love my black pepper, but these were seasoned so lovely that it was not needed. The vegetables included garlic, kale, mushrooms, potatoes, and many other delicious bits. The pesto sauce on it was just perfect. My dining companion had biscuit with both types of gravy, which was really great that they let her split it because she had been undecided. Chicken sausage was tasty and she loved every bit of it. They have both a house, made salsa and jam at the table and I think the jam was raspberry and incredibly tasty. Loved it so much. I will be back here as often as possible!

*3.5, rounded up*…read more Came for breakfast on Mother's Day with a reservation. Checked in ~5min early, and ended up waiting for ~15min past reservation time because the hostess did not let us know we had to check-in *again* when the person parking the car had made it to the restaurant. We ended up with what was, in my opinion, the worst table in the restaurant, after watching several parties of the same size seated at 'better' tables, all of which had arrived after the driver, who was there less than 2 min later (so still prior to scheduled time) after I was at the hostess stand, and we were seated waiting in direct view of the hostess. PLEASE be clear in your communication about this policy: it was neither clearly posted anywhere nor voiced - it wasn't a huge inconvenience, but I would have much preferred being sat in the main area. The restaurant areas are each different: the bar area itself is the least interesting: several seating booths and the bar, closest to the bathrooms. The main dining area has more seating, a fireplace and the self serve coffee bar - I LOVE this feature, and even saw a Wonderwood Springs mug. Shoutout to my favorite neighborhood merriment maker, Mike Bennett (if you haven't been there, go. Do the mini golf... but this review isn't about WW, so... moving on) We ordered a couple of adult beverages: the Bloody Mary was *fantastic* and I'm grateful to the server for suggesting to mix the two infused vodkas I was torn between. Hot peppered pickle was *chef's kiss* and gave me all the things I crave in a bloody: slice, twang, umami. The mix was the perfect consistency (nothing worse than a great tasting Bloody Mary that's too thick/thin), and it didn't get too watered down as breakfast went on. Baby Daddy's iced "Shed's on Fire" was... alright. The highlight was the espresso bean that he didn't even get because I stole it (Mother's Day... amirite?). I'm not sure if it was the 151 or if it's because I don't drink much anymore, but all I could taste was the alcohol, so I didn't feel it was very balanced - I would have preferred a more coffee forward taste, especially since our server said the iced version was made you cold brew. I had anticipated it being stronger in coffee flavor. I'm a sucker for anything crab, so when we were told the special was a crab cake Benedict, I was sold (so was my kiddo) - didn't really look at the rest of the menu, and if I'm honest, I'm kind of sad I didn't. It's not that the CCB was bad, but it was just alright/nothing to write home about. I couldn't tell if the crab used was Dungeness, fresh, or something from a can, there wasn't much flavor to the cake itself (it was honestly overpowered by the egg & hollandaise combination) and made me want to go home and try to make my own (Dungeness) cakes. The highlight of my breakfast was the grits, when they first came from the back: note to future me/the person reading this reciew: eat them first/fresh & hot- by the time I came back to them, they had cooled & congealed *sad panda* My son is a culinary student (has studied at Johnson & Wales) said the same thing about the cakes - lack of flavor, needs something additional, couldn't tell what type of crab was used, etc and was also disappointed. The highlight for him was the potato cakes, and I'm pretty sure he is going to try to replicate those at home now!! All in all, we weren't exactly disappointed in our Tin Shed visit, but I'm not sure it tops the list of our favorite Portland breakfast/brunch spots. I'm sure we'll come back, but next time I'll try something on menu and get a biscuit - those b*+ches looked dang amazing on everyone's plates as they walked out of the kitchen!!

As of right now, it sits at number one for my dad and a few of my friends alike. For me? I'm not ready to crown it just yet. I need a few more visits, a few more comparisons against my usual haunts. But it's up there. No question. When I first moved to Portland almost a year ago, this was one of the spots that kept coming up. Highly recommended, spoken about with a kind of confidence that usually means it's either overhyped or the real deal. We went for Mother's Day. Then again for Father's Day. My parents loved it -- the kind of love that doesn't need explanation -- and honestly, I get it. The service is immaculate. Thoughtful, attentive, but never hovering. You feel taken care of in a way that's increasingly rare -- like the front of house actually wants you to have a good time, not just turn the table. There's a real sense of pride in what they're doing. The team feels aligned, almost symbiotic. Front of house lifting up back of house, back of house delivering in a way that makes that support feel earned. Whether that relationship is perfect behind the scenes or not, it reads as seamless from the outside. And the food -- it's just excellent. Cooked perfectly, consistently, without unnecessary theatrics. No foams, no gels, no overworked plating trying to prove something. Just honest, confident cooking over fire. The kind of food that reminds you how good simple things can be when they're done right. It's indulgent in the best way. The kind of meal that might even tempt a few vegans back to the dark side -- at least for a night. It's not cheap. Let's be clear about that. I don't go here casually, and I'm not pretending I do. Thanks, Mom and Dad. But it's the kind of place that's worth saving up for -- not just for the food, but for the experience. For some people, this might be a random Wednesday night. For most of us, it's something you plan for. And when you do, it delivers. It's special without making a big deal about being special. And that's exactly why it works.

We grabbed a table, got our menus, and I immediately noticed the Community Meal option-where anyone can come in and get a meal, no questions asked, free of cost. Our server overheard us talking about it and was ready to offer it with complete respect. We were the only ones in this restaurant and they were okay with providing meals for free if we needed them. One of us ordered the French toast, and wow... I wish I had too. It was beautiful, topped with nuts for the perfect crunch, and made with brioche bread. PHENOMENAL. I had a bite (and got the leftovers), and it was just as amazing cold. I ordered the chorizo breakfast sandwich with a side of tots, and even the quality of the oil they fry with must be top-notch because those tots had the perfect crispy outside with soft, fluffy insides. My friend ordered the huevos rancheros, which I barely saw before he devoured it and immediately went into a happy food coma. We also had biscuits and gravy--slightly sweeter than usual, but still delicious. I'll absolutely be bringing friends here for future breakfast dates. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and come try their food!
