My wife and I have been coming here for almost a decade and the place never disappoints. The food is consistently great and the Cioppino is simply the best I've ever had: the seafood is incredibly fresh and the tomato broth is delicious. Last night my wife had the lamb (which I tried) and it was also first rate. I should also call out the vodka martinis we had: unlike as is the case with many bars and restaurants we go to, Cabezon does NOT water down their drinks. How refreshing. Finally, it's worth noting that Cabezon offers a very relaxing environment that lends itself towards having a leisurely dinner. We also love interacting with the owner at the front of the house, Jackie, who is very sweet. (Her husband is the master chef.) I can't recommend this place enough. read more

I was very impressed by the menu, both cocktail and food. Margaritas were made with fresh mix, not too sweet and pretty strong. Olives were delicious, not just standard grocery store ones and they gave you a good amount. Caesar salad was huge. Oysters were fresh but overpriced, would skip that. The cioppino was incredible. Came out piping hot and I ate every last bit. Service was well paced. We had an early reservation so that may color things but they could use a bit of a refresh in lighting and ambiance to further elevate the experience I would definitely come back to try more of the menu. read more

Tucked away in a NE Portland neighborhood, this restaurant is a hidden gem perfect for date night. The low lighting and upscale feel create a great ambiance. Out of everything we tried, I recommend the Cioppino. It's a fantastic, soul waning stew overflowing with local seafood (clams, mussels, fish, shrimp) and oh so satisfying. We started with the Romaine and Radicchio Caesar Salad, which was an ideal appetizer to share. Service was excellent and attentive, and the noise level was pleasantly low, even when busy. So great! Dollar oysters on Thursday was perfect but I had to mix my own cocktail sauce glad they had ketchup and horseradish (I'm not a fan of other toppings - just me). Friendly service. Reasonably priced. My shrimp with glass noodles and samba cashew sauce was divine! My friend had the mussels frites and that was delicious as well. I look forward to coming back. Feels/looks quite fancy w/ seasonal rotating locally sourced menu & dim lighting I kind of thought it would be another expensive pretentious Portland restaurant but everything was reasonably priced for very quality food in a nice atmosphere. - The wrapped shrimp with glass noodles was much better than I thought as well - I was expecting spring rolls but it came w/ 3 jumbo juicy shrimp w/ a light crunch atop Korean japchae style glass noodles which was different but paired very well. - Cioppino: full of fresh variety of seafood including couple crab legs, mussels, shrimp & squid. The broth itself was a little light but delicious w/ the bread. - Ling Cod: very tender and flaky served atop some mashed taters & veg w/ a light fresh sauce, but nothing too mind-blowing flavor wise. - Tres leches cake was delicious w/ fresh tart berries. I don't normally mention service but the older gentleman who served us was very professional & on point. The ambience is lovely. Nice low lighting and beautiful blown glass jellyfish chandeliers. The food was delicious. We had the paddlefish caviar appetizer. It was small but had incredible flavor. I ordered the cioppino which was packed with seafood, my only wish was that the crab legs were opened for me, it was a little messy to open soupy crab legs. A time honored place that feels fresh and contemporary but trusted and true. We were able to make a reservation online about an hour before we wanted to eat. As soon as we arrived we were greeted and seated. Service was excellent, noise level perfect, it was comfortable and approachable. Everything we ordered was delicious! This is a special place. The menu rotates to what is in season and is carefully curated to perfection. We made reservations earlier in the day and adjusted them to add to more friends easily. Service was excellent and the food was okay. I can tell lots of care and love goes into the food which is really great but the flavor profile of the duck was just off. It wasn't tender and had a really smoky flavor, was a bit too salty for me as well, I had to offset it by eating the dull flavor of the tart and had to wash down the rest with water. Maybe I just got a salty leg this day? The port wine strawberry jus was a really great touch and the duck skin was incredibly thin and crispy which was delicious. I also ordered the chocolate pot de crème, it was a bit grittier than I had expected but the flavor was nice. My husband ended up eating what I couldn't finish and he loved it. read more

One of the most under-the radar restaurants in Portland. A small, intimate setting, Chioppino is the draw, but there's an extremely well-curated menu of farm-to-table ingredients, and especially fish. ($1 oysters on Thursdays). Excellent cocktails. There are usually about eight varied entrees, all of which are appealing. I had sturgeon (chosen over lamb sirloin) the other evening. Been going for years. I heard how amazing the food and overall experience was at Cabezon from a foodie friend so I made reservations for 6 a couple weeks before we got to Portland for our visit to the University of Portland. The time came and we arrived to a really cool place, neat decor, comfortable and homey feeling. We were greeted by a very nice woman who gave us a place to sit and delivered our drink order very quickly while we waited for our table. Table was ready quick, our waiter was awesome and we quickly had apps on our table. I am a commercial fisherman from San Diego, so my seafood standards are very high. The mussels were great, shrimp bisque were excellent, the shrimp app was ridiculously well paired. The cheddar mac and cheese was rich and tender. 5 of us ordered the chopino and 1 ordered the lamb sirloin. They were both AMAZING. The chopino just kept giving, the juice was so good we got more bread to soak it up. We all agreed we will go to this place every single time we visit our kids up in Portland. The entire experience was 5 stars from start to finish. I will add the prices are very reasonable for the quality they are serving. The dessert menu sounded great but we all ate too much so that will be next trip. read more

My partner and I went a few days ago for our anniversary, and everything was fantastic. The duck confit and the oysters were delicious, and the service was great. We sat outdoors, and the indoors looked very charming. Found the perfect spot for date night. Went searching on Yelp for fresh oysters and found this cozy restaurant. The atmosphere is intimate and dark with candlelit tables for two, which I loved. Turns out, they are offering 3 kinds of oysters. My date and I tried one of each type, then proceeded to order a dozen of the ones we liked best. Superb! Craving satisfied! I was excited to see Sturgeon Caviar on the menu, since I hadn't tried it before. They served it atop a blini, or small pancake with a touch of crème fraîche (fancy sour cream). FIREWORKS! New fav! Caviar, much like the oysters, has a delicate taste of the sea. A major part of the experience is its texture. There is a tiny "pop" to the individual eggs that releases a fleeting hint of mild salt and slightly creamy ocean-y aftertaste. We also shared some small plates of fried shrimp with peanut noodles, the Caesar salad and finally the Cioppino (seafood stew) entrée. The look of each of the plates were stunning and the flavors of each were SO delicious that we joked about licking the plates clean, but decided to be civilized instead :) Can't wait to become a regular here, and recommend this spot to our friends. PS: Extensive and surprisingly affordable wine list is offered here, as well as champagne and craft cocktails. Warm, cozy farm-to-table spot for carefully prepared Pac NW food. The Basil and Phyllo wrapped shrimp was delicious, and the mussels with chorizo and saffron rouille were absolutely yummy (made a great leftover lunch with some crusty toasted sourdough the next day). The fries were perfectly crisp, and served with truffle aioli. The pork chop, lamb loin, and sea bass were all excellent. The mac and cheese was good, although it came to the table lukewarm (would've been great to have had this steaming on that cold, rainy night). The service was great - very friendly and attentive. We started with appetizers, Oysters and one of the freshest I've tasted. The pate is great (not pictured) and Mac and Cheese is good. Nothing special but it's done right. The duck confit served with kale and mushroom frittata is delicious however the salad came with it is over seasoned with salt. The lamb look is cooked medium rare and so delectable. Comfy-cozy with top-notch service and really great food! For me, ambiance is critical. These dark winter nights I want to hunker down in a warm and dark environment, with just the right lighting and vibes. Cabezon definitely ticked all the boxes. Drinks were quick, appetizer didn't take long, and entree followed soon after. I had the pork chop which was cooked perfectly. My squash was delicious but being picky about texture, the skin of the squash was just too chewy for my taste. The warm almond cake was such a fabulous dessert, totally tasting of Christmas and fall. Hadn't been to Cabezon since a couple of visits close to when they started business & was pleasantly surprised. They offer a fairly limited menu, but everything we tried was excellent & very fairly priced for Portland. The mussels were wonderful & made us not miss La Moule so much. The Caesar is great version, not the cookie cutter replica one finds in far too many places. The duck breast was, perhaps, one of the 2-3 best I've had anywhere for many years. Ditto for the pork chop. Mixed drinks were superb & I'm kind of a Manhattan snob & have a hard time finding ones as good or better than mine. The wine list offers only a few bottles that weren't this or last year's releases, but is reasonably diverse & priced. Cabezon will be back on our rotation of places to go for sure - nice place, people & great food at a reasonable price. read more

Lamb Sirloin - I didn't try the lamb but my son left me the veggies. The potatoes aren't crispy, the beans weren't too appetizing. Mac 'n Cheese with White Cheddar and Gruyere - Very good cheese sauce. It's nothing special but done a good job on the good old Mac n cheese. Fresh Fish-black cod - The fish was fresh and good. The pancakes kind of interesting... Not crispy neither. Cioppino - The sea food was very fresh. The prawns were most impressive... So fresh. The rest was good as well but the herb was so overwhelming that it covers the freshness of the seafood. I think it's dill, I took them off but still too overwhelming. Amazing dinner! I dined at Cabezon the other night, going by Covid rules Cabezon offers outdoor dining and has a few tables to choose from so it's best to make reservations before coming. They do have outdoor heaters, but I suggest you wear multiple layers - maybe even gloves because for the most part you're exposed to the elements. This did not take away from the dining experience and once you're eating you could care less about how cold it is the food is that good. Next time I dine outdoors I will wear more layers though! (I like the cold by the way my house is usually kept in the lower 60's) Even with Covid, Cabezon offers a rather full menu with several options to choose from - everything we ordered was amazing so I don't doubt as their menu changes anything they offer will be a great choice. I started with their bleu cheese stuffed olive martini - obviously amazing. Mac & cheese, potato / leek / ancho soup, oysters (so fresh and sweet), lamb sirloin with gnocchi & pan roasted sole with crab filled cannelloni. For our last meal in Oregon, Mrs and the youngest daughter wanted to eat at Cabezon due to good Yelp reviews. Oldest daughter and I decided to finish leftover from all our previous meals instead. We decided to get food to go so that we all could eat together at our hotel. Mrs ordered cioppino and the youngest daughter ordered pork chop. There was a decent amount of seafood in the cioppino and the broth was good. But over all, not as good as the California version. Also, Mrs only got three skinny one inch toasts for dipping, insufficient. The youngest daughter was disappointed with the mesquite grilled pork chop. She said the pork chop was tender but lacking in favor. The mesquite smoke taste was too faint. The corn cake and zucchini were good tasting. The one-piece pork chop dish at $32 was overpriced. So, we are looking for that white tablecloth neighborhood joint. You know the place, the place you go when you need a bit of a treat. They know you, your drink and will recommend what good at that moment. This might become the place for us. Very comfortable room, the service was great, the bar was great and the food excellent. And the portions are large, my lovely duck was delicious and my take home box fed my partner and me a light dinner the next night. Prices are more than fair for the quality. Street parking only and it's tight so factor that into your arrival time. We will certainly be back. What sucked was the three Amazonians seated at the next table who were having a fine time and, apparently, wanted all the rest of us to share their good cheer. LOUD. The poor server was embarrassed but they were just on the ok side of the behavior line. So guys do your restaurant a solid and be aware of the comfort of your fellow dinners. read more

I was doing research on restaurants that have good seafood in Portland and I was gravitated towards Cabezon, specifically because of pictures I saw of the cioppino. It looked delectable in the pictures. First, we ordered the totten inlet mussels with with borlotti beans, Spanish chorizo, fries and saffron rouille for $18.50. The mussels had a good taste and fries were delicious. I wasn't interested in the beans or chorizo but my husband was so he got to eat all of those. You can easily share this dish with 2 or 3 people. For the main course, I ordered the cioppino, which had wild white shrimp, local fish, Manila clams, Dungeness crab, calamari and blue mussels. I was a bit disappointed because instead of the crab, we were served crawfish. I am personally not a fan of crawfish so I wasn't a fan of the substitution. This dish was $29.00. The broth was flavorful but I felt like the taste was overwhelmed with celery and spices. Rather, I would prefer a sweet broth that had the nature juices of the seafood in the dish. When restaurants cook the seafood in the broth, the broth ends up being one of favorite parts of the dish; however, I didn't get those flavors in this dish. Overall, I think the prices are reasonable the the service was good. I don't live in a place where fresh seafood is easily accessible so Cabezon is a place that could meet those needs. read more

Heard many good things about this place. Street parking was available nearby. We made a reservation at 8 pm but arrived 25 mins early. They were able to accommodate and sat us shortly. It was full of house so our server was busy so we realized we needed to tell him what we wanted whenever he was at the table. We ordered, mussels and fries, house cut fries and aioli, cioppino, grilled bass and cocktail drinks. The food was excellent and we enjoyed every bite of it. The seafood was so fresh and delicious. The internal struggle...how to properly review this experience. We had plans of going elsewhere, but when we arrived at that establishment it wasn't what we expected.so we drove on and found our way here. We had no reservation, didn't know the restaurant and we're taking a chance. Upon arrival we were seated at a table by an unused door. A number of tables were empty. Our seats were chilly due to being next to that unused door. We asked if we could move to another table. The waitress tending to our table replied to us with a slight tone "this is the table we use for our walk ins". Her table-side manner went down hill from there. She alone was responsible for the star rating on this review. The food was amazing. We had a shrimp appetizer that was unbelievable. The entree was tasty as well. Desert did not disappoint either. Unfortunately, the odds of me returning are slim (that appetizer). There are just too many other places to choose from. read more
