Cañete came at the recommendation from one of my colleagues as an excellent spot for tapas in Barcelona. You didn't need to tell me twice, as I wanted to try as many tapas as I could during my short stay in the city. I noticed they took reservations, so I booked it for a late lunch during our first full day in the city. At first glance, Cañete seems like a small spot - though once inside it gives way to a larger restaurant. It's a little cramped, but they make it work and the atmosphere is actually quite cozy. There's a large bar in the front, and the dining room is separated into two main areas. It looks like they took over the space next door to the original area, as we were seated in the second dining room and had to walk through the kitchen to get there. The restaurant was decorated tastefully - white tablecloths with high-end finishes. Tapas were the star of the menu of course, and they had a really good selection separated into smaller bites and larger plates that were more traditionally sized. We ordered several - bellota cured ham with pan tomate, green beans, parmesan, and pine nut salad, lobster croquettes, Catalán sausage with grilled aubergine, Cañete-style shrimp in garlic, and two sandwiches - the chorizo and the squid. Generally speaking, all the tapas were excellent. The squid sandwich came highly recommended, but this didn't hit for me personally. I eat calamari, but the way this was prepared was not for me. In contrast, my favorites were the string bean salad and sausage - these both were super fresh and had great flavor. The sliced meats and pan tomate were good but pretty on par with other places I had it in the city. The shrimp was great, and I could take or leave the croquettes. Service was fine - they were not cold, but not overly friendly either. They knew we were tourists and we kinda got the tourist treatment. This might be a me thing, but I got warmer treatment elsewhere. Overall, though, I had a good time at Cañete. They serve excellent tapas, and seem to be a really popular spot - but I would want to try other restaurants in the city first before returning here.
Wow, this meal was so good I literally made another reservation after we left. This place might be advertised as a tapas restaurant, but it's much more than that. The service was excellent, our server spoke English and knew so much about American pop culture. He even sang NSYNC songs to us while serving us dishes. As for the food let's get into it: - Lobster Croquettes (8/10) We've had a lot of croquettes this trip, but these were on another level, get one per person. - Paella (7.5/10) Different style of paella from other places we went. It was almost like a paella curry, which was still rich and delicious. - Squid Sandwich (10/10) This is hands down the best appetizer I've ever had. The squid was packed with flavor and the mayo sauce they used paired perfectly. Order one per person, and be prepared to order another to go. - Garlic Shrimp (8/10) Solid entree paired with sourdough bread. Dip that bread into the sauce and you'll be satisfied. - Aged Beef Steak w/ Foie Gras (9/10) This might be one of the best steak dishes I've had traveling abroad. It was cooked perfectly, and came with a potato crust on the bottom and Foie Gras on top. Definitely a must order. Overall a great experience, from the service and ambiance to the quality of the food, this is a must try when visiting Barcelona. Would I go again? Absolutely!
Food was too tier, especially the steak. Very popular so waited for a min for walk-in but totally worth it. Even their cava - sparkling champagne was super fresh. I recommend this location if you're visiting Barcelona. The location is a bit hidden in the alley but the vibe inside is actually pretty nice.
Cañete is highly recommended for a reason and absolutely worth the hype!! Reservations are tough to snag, but they do offer counter seating for walk ins. I went on a Friday about 15 minutes before opening, waited another 15 minutes, and they seated reservation guests first. Totally manageable and well worth it. Squid sandwich: Just get it! It's life changing!!! The squid is drenched in a rich garlic aioli. Delicious! Razor clams: Another must order! Simple, fresh, and crunchy with olive oil. You really can't go wrong. I ordered a dozen! Cañete-style shrimp: The sauce is delicious, though the shrimp are on the smaller side. Still very good overall. Grilled scallops with pork: Great texture with a nice crunch and lots of flavor. Octopus: Not as spicy as I expected or hoped, but the sauce had a subtle peanut note that was so good. Definitely still worth ordering. The espresso martini was very good, and the wine is reasonably priced. Overall, I loved this place and would absolutely go back. The waitress was attentive, friendly, and made excellent recommendations. It is slightly pricey overall, but money well spent. We spent about €200 for two. Highly recommend!!!
Can't applaud the chefs & staff enough for the service, quality and consistency of the food offered and executed at Cañete! Get a reservation or simply be patient (as we were) have a cold beer & wait your turn because it's worth it! We arrived at about 3pm and the place was hopping! The host politely let us know we'd have to wait 30 minutes but he collected us 20 minutes (and a cold cerveza) later for a pair of seats at the bar. We enjoyed the lobster croquettes, the outstanding bellota cured ham, the irresistible cockles with citrus, the Bombas and the aged steak with foie and truffle sauce. We washed it down with a couple glasses of bold red wine and later some cava with the outstanding cream Catalana. Make time for a visit. I plan to return MANY times...or at least every time I'm in Barcelona.
If you can, make a reservation in advance! It is well worth it! I did not and came here per the recommendation of the concierge at my hotel! It was busy and luckily, there was seating at the bar for two! The staff was phenomenal as they were engaging, knowledgeable, and entertaining. The bar was full of patrons. Standout dishes were the squid sandwich, the octopus, and tuna and anchovy salad. We had wine to round out the meal and the best dessert that I can't remember the name! Our server was Angel and he was great as was the rest of the staff especially the hostess who told us to come at 6 to get a seat! Definitely check Cañete out if you are in Barcelona!
A popular tapas place that we came to try based on social media recommendations. Highly recommend the squid sandwich which is their most popular dish- it was so delicious and garlicky! Lobster croquette was also yummy. Ham was a bit too salty for my liking. Food came out fast and service was good. We got bar seating because we didn't make a reservation. Was about an hour wait when we stopped by at 730pm on a Monday evening. Were able to leave, roam around for an hour, and come back to be seated right away.
Don't come without a reservation, it is near impossible to get seated! We watched several parties get turned away, and honestly good for the hostess/host for having such a great attitude because man, some people were rude and entitled!! My friend made a reservation and thank god he did. The food was delicious and homey, and a great representation of different regions of Spain. My favorite was probably the shrimp torta (we got the last one of the night!!), but definitely could have had more of the fried fish and calamari platter as well.
Bomb food! Professional service, i would definitely come back but honestly, the squid sandwich was the star of the show. The lack of photos should tell you everything. We ordered croquettes, tomato bread, shrimp, and garlic, and this squid sandwich and honestly, I would've just stuck with the squid sandwich and croquettes. Can't wait to visit Barcelona again and tear that food up. They even want the extra mile and some happy birthday from my wife-love this place.
This restaurant is amazing!! I went based on a recommendation from my hotel during a recent trip to Barcelona and I was super surprised at how good the food was! The restaurant was super busy and the space is small but I was able to be seated pretty quickly. The servers were all very nice as I chose my meal. I ordered the squid sandwich, deboned oxtails with mashed potatoes, and tiramisu and it all was delicious!!! I definitely plan to visit this restaurant again during my next visit to the city!
The food was amazing! Service was fast paced and energetic. We sat at the counter so got to watch all of the action. Entertaining and delicious! Can't wait to go back. Warning: need reservations far in advance.
This is one of the best restaurants and kindest staff & most delicious food I've ever had. I'm back home in Washington DC dreaming about the Iberia pork steak , octopus sandwich and string bean salad. Everything was over the top ! I felt like I was on a movie set. My husband had the best birthday celebration Thank you
If you're in Barcelona this is a MUST visit restaurant. We talked our way in to some bar seating but best to make a reservation a month in advance. It's very trendy. And for good reason. The service is exceptional and the food some of the best in the world.

Maybe (other than that great church) the only reason to come to Barcelona. It is a fallen city in many ways. Every year it's luster gets dulled. Imported problems linger. Be careful ladies! The street outside this resturant is not safe in my estimation. I mean my beautiful daughter did get chased by "a newer uninvited resident." Inside? The best resturant in the city. Maybe in all of Spain. I could make a case for it to be THE BEST RESTURANT ON EARTH. (Except that title goes to Commanders Palace in New Orleans or Caviar Kaspia in Paris.But maybe not.) Great service. Great food. Great feeling place. Drawbacks? The neighborhood. The entrance to get in is AWFUL. The place is always too crowded and it can get very loud. Yet I am giving it the maximum stars? "Why Mancow," you ask. Ready? I don't know! Its just THAT SPECIAL. read more

Delicious variety of tapas in a bright cheery environment! Definitely make a reservation because the line was piling out the door even for a weekday lunch. The menu has a nice variety of items, and they're all pretty small so you can try a lot. Our favorite was the squid sandwich, a super unique must get! We also really liked the garlic shrimp, which had a nice fragrant flavor from the heads. The tiramisu was also delightful with a nice balance of sweet and bitter flavors. We heard the razor clams were really good, but they didn't have any the day we visited which was a bummer! read more

This was the tapas place I was looking forward to trying most in Barcelona and it did not disappoint! We made a reservation well in advance and got to sit at the bar. Not only did we have great attentive service but we also got to observe the kitchen. Our waitress was excellent! We tried many tapas but my favorites were the paella and the oxtail with mashed potatoes. I would definitely come back! read more
This very well may be the best restaurant in Barcelona. When we arrived the place was packed (we made a reservation four months ago) and you'll need one to eat here. The Chef's are so friendly and you can tell they know they are creating works of art with their creations. The atmosphere is truly something special within and getting to watch the Chef's create was something very special to me. The food was impeccable, and in short if you are a fan of pork get the suckling pig (It's life changing). As for desert... I don't know what they do to the pineapple in the lemon sorbet caramelized pineapple but the head chef laughed when the F word came out of my mouth after tasting it. I hope I get to come back here one more time in my life. read more

The food was outstanding, simple dishes done exceptionally well, full of flavor and clearly made with care. Every plate felt thoughtfully prepared, The atmosphere was just as memorable. Lively, energetic, and full of people enjoying themselves, it really captured the spirit of the city. read more

Prior to going make sure you make reservations as the restaurant is very compact and the waiting area is not as big. I made the mistake of not making reservations which lead to a 1hr+ wait , but I did enjoy some red wine which made the time go by quicker. Cañete was recommended by a cab driver , I am so glad I stopped by because this was probably the best food during my stay in Barcelona ! Had some trouble with the menu as it was in catalan, but our waiter made fantastic recommendations. We started off with La bomba which I wished I would have ordered more of. The fish dish in my opinion is more on the saltier side but is still great just be aware. The meat and octopus was a long wait but definitely worth it. The meat was so tender and the octopus was nice and crispy on the top but not overcooked at all! I'd love to come back next time I'm in Spain ! read more
I love wine bars that also serve delicious food...and I don't even drink much wine. I just like the casual atmosphere where friends can meet up for drinks and eat good food. They serve some very local, authentic dishes. Our favorites: * Tomato garlic bread: not all are made through same; the bread here is super crispy with really fresh tomatoes * Sardines with basalmic vinegar: unlike many other salty sardines, this one is marinated in basalmic; great for topping the tomato garlic bread * Grilled octopus: a classic that you have to try in Spain * Beef tartar with egg yolk: the beef is seasoned very well and the egg yolk adds a nice touch of creaminess * Lobster croquettes: 'nuff said * Peas with onions, jamon, and poached egg: my local friend said they call these sweet peas "pearls of the Earth" because they are that good * Razor clams: we do not have these where I live, so I really enjoyed them * Cod fritters: they are decent sized fritters * Crema catalana: like a crème brûlée but with orange and cinnamon-infused custard Staff is friendly and speaks decent English. The place is small and frequently packed, so definitely make a reservation. You will have the table for two hours. It will be the fastest two hours you spend -- maybe it's the wine. read more

Why 5 stars? Because I felt lucky just to be here. --- --- --- I did a lot of food research before coming to Barcelona, and I bookmarked approximately 450 different tapas places. To be honest, they all mostly kind of blended together, but the one I kept coming back to that I was interested in the most was Canete. It seemed to be mentioned most often by people when reading lists of the best places to eat in Barcelona. They would not allow me to book a reservation for just me online, so the day before I hoped to visit, I stopped by and asked how likely it would be for me to be sat if I arrived for lunch right when they opened at 1pm. They said as long as I was there promptly, I would be able to be seated, but to be aware that a line forms. I arrived at 12:35p and was the first person there. By 1p, there were probably 15 people in line. I was walked in right as the clock struck 1 and was seated at the corner of the bar. Because I was standing in line for a bit, I had already stalked the menu a lot. I made a note in my phone with everything I was interested in and showed it to the server, and said, "Here's what I'm interested in, I trust you to bring me out the best of this list, and even make substitutions if you think I missed anything really great." He did exactly that for me. 1) Lobster Croquette: 5-stars. I love lobster. I love croquettes. This was an obvious match. 2) Squid Sandwich: 5-stars. This was the best thing I ate all day and one of the best during my 5 days in Europe. Do not come here without ordering this. It's a small sandwich which basically had non-fried calamari in it. I don't think I'd ever get tired of eating this. 3) Octopus: 5-stars. I loved how this meat was still firm like Octopus usually is, but it was also still tender at the same time, once you cut/bit into it. They performed voodoo on it. The little tentacle holes (I have no idea what they are actually called) were actually really crispy, which gave it some nice depth. 4) Oxtail: 3-stars. The only miss for me. The oxtail was more the consistency of stew meat and I've just never been a fan of that. I was already pretty full by the time I got this, so I only ate half of it. I did like the presentation -- it came in bowl that seemed like it would have been for French Onion Soup and was filled with some sort of bread crumbs on top of the oxtail itself. 5) Tocinillo De Cielo: 5-stars. I am still not even sure what this was, but it was awesome. The only thing I wish were different is that there was just a hint of a citrus flavor, when I would have preferred it to be more creamy, but it was still an amazing dessert. Maybe even the 2nd best thing I had outside of the Squid Sandwich. Aside from the food itself, I loved my vantage point from the end of the bar. I watched everyone working in the open kitchen and it was like having tickets to a show. No one ever stopped moving, but it was also very controlled. Calling it chaos would be insulting because it was so orderly and perfectly in sync. I'm very happy I came here, if nothing else for the squid sandwich and watching the production of the kitchen! read more
Ordered: Faro de Cádiz Shrimp Torta (~€4) Cañete-style Shrimp in Garlic (~€31) Cañete Paella of the Day (~€27) Lobster Croquette (~€5 each) Torrijas Vino Misa (~€8) Aya's take: Bar Cañete is an absolute must-visit in Barcelona! We stopped by at 1pm (opening time) and there was a line of about 50 people outside. Thankfully we had a reservation and were seated right away. I loved the ambiance right off the bat as it felt casual yet upscale and we walked through the kitchen to get to our table on the other side. You know it's clean and the food is legit when you can walk through the kitchen! The Lobster Croquettes were the best I had in Barcelona. Crispy on the outside and soft, creamy, and loaded with lobster on the inside. The Cañete-style Shrimp in Garlic was unbelievably fresh. The shrimp just melted in my mouth; I almost thought it wasn't cooked fully. The garlic sauce is also delicious; we doused the bread in that sauce too. The Shrimp Torta is a skip and the Paella was actually not what I was expecting. It was almost soupy which I wasn't expecting and the flavors just didn't come together as well as I hoped. The Torrijas Vino Misa dessert came recommended by our waitress and it was a great bite to end the meal on. Highly recommend making a reservation and adding this to your Barcelona itinerary! read more
I came here for one thing and one thing only. The iberico ham! And it was worth the hype. Everything else was a little salty (garlic shrimp, seafood paella, octopus) The restaurant is very upbeat and loud, but it really sets the mood for an exciting meal. Barcelona is known for fun and being loose. All I can say is WOW! We heard rave things about Bar Canete from our hotel concierge as a local spot for tapas and I saw the amazing reviews on TripAdvisor too! I tried to make a reservation about a month and a half in advance and they were fully booked. I reached out to our hotel concierge and they were able to fit us in a spot for a dinner reservation around 9:30 PM. When we entered, people were trying to walk in last minute and were being turned away. But when we arrived about 5 minutes prior to our reservation, we waited a few minutes and were seated promptly at the bar overlooking the kitchen. We were promptly welcomed by our server and he was very warm and welcoming. He offered to answer any questions we had and we started with a glass of wine for I believe around 5 euros. We then ordered a variety of appetizers, including the Iberian Ham (1 portion for 29 euros- would highly recommend this portion for two people to share), and we ordered a ham croquette (2.75 euros) and a lobster croquette (4.55 euros) for each of us, and also a Barceloneta Bomba (4.25 euros). We ordered a few more things, I can't remember which, but all food was absolutely outstanding and I can't rave about it enough! We closed the meal with the Cream Catalana (6 euros) and the Apple Pie (8 euros) and these were both outstanding! Been on a tour of Europe and so far Cañete is hands down the best restaurant I've eaten at! It's crazy to say this, but 4.6 is actually low for this restaurant. They should easily be a 4.8 and above. When walking in the restaurant has a rustic and homey vibe to it while still maintaining an upscale standard. They have a long seafood bar that houses all of the different seafood that they have and you can see the wide variety and how fresh it all is. The staff are very professional and knowledgeable while also making you feel at home. Our waitress was absolutely amazing and she gave so many great recommendations. We ordered a bunch of their dishes because the portions are a bit smaller but that's okay because it's a tapas spot and each dish was fantastic! We started off with their toasted flatbread with tomatoes. And then we ordered their Veal Meatball with fries, Roasted Lamb Cutlets, Deboned Oxtail with mashed potatoes, and lastly their Aged Beef Steak with Truffle Sauce. The Veal meatball was super juicy and flavorful and the sauce they paired with it complimented it very well. The lamb was probably my least favorite of all the dishes (still very good) only because there wasn't a whole lot of meat on it. However whatever meat was on there tasted great. The Oxtail was my 2nd favorite because they way they mixed the mashed potatoes and oxtail was amazing. The oxtail literally melted in your mouth as you ate it and the mashed potatoes complimented it very well because it was so light and airy. Lastly the beef steak was the best dish in my opinion because it was so tender and flavorful. I haven't had a beef dish like that in a long time. The beef filet was cut up and placed on a potato (has brownish style) and topped with truffle. Everything paired with one another so well and you ended the meal full and happy. You should definitely come here if you're on the Rambla and looking for a place to eat and I would highly recommend the Aged Beef Steak with Truffle Sauce. read more
My first reaction was, "This is definitely a place Anthony Bourdain would have featured on his show." The atmosphere was cool and classic (all employees wearing white chef coats). There was a sign prominently hanging in the entry that read "F@*% your diet". There was ambient music playing in the background, creating a very nice atmosphere. And the place was packed at lunch time. Make a reservation! Even without one though, we got a table in about 20 minutes. The croquetas de jamon were so good...but the lobster croquetas were AMAZING!!! The tuna tataki was so fresh and flavorful. I'm a big sushi and poke fan back home, and this was exceptional! The suckling pig was also fantastic too and very perfectly cooked. The service was attentive. We were very impressed. read more

Reservation online is a must for this great tapas spot if you don't like long waits. We had a 1pm lunch reservation and people were lining up at the door 30 minutes prior. They have a great wine list and the food was delicious. Seafood is really fresh and tasty. The vibes is lively. Servers are nice and friendly. What a great spot in Barcelona! read more

We had tried to get in Thursday when we first got to Barcelona and it was a 90 minute wait and we decided to pass. Tried again today, Saturday, and were given a 50 minute wait time. We walked around and came back and were seated immediately at the bar. The bar is great to sit at as you get up close with the process of the bar and staff and service is fantastic and quick. We ordered a few various items and also tried dessert. Demian is amazing and if you get to interact with him you are in for a treat. Highly recommend the spicy meatball. Inquire about their daily specials as well. read more
Environment was great. The food tasted fresh and delicious. The monkfish was very flavorful. Service was a bit slow and it might have been because it was slightly busy but I felt like it was because we were American. 5 mins after I wrote the 4 start review the server slammed the menu on our table, yelled some obscene language to us and his co worker and was giving attitude the whole time during the payment process. Terrible way to end the meal. Food 5/5, Service 2/5. I think we just got a shittt server cuz the rest of the staff was so friendly. read more
