You can't beat the fresh food at Buxton Munch! We have been coming for years and whatever we order does not disappoint! They have reopened the dining room and it's great to eat in the restaurant. Tried to go here. Looked promising based on reviews. Had an infant and 2 small kids with us, and when we went in, saw multiple open tables. We were told there was a wait, but we weren't told how long, but also told we were the only people on the wait list. So after discussing it, we asked if we could place a to-go order since we would have to wait outside in the heat with babies. The woman said, "No, I cannot take to-go orders when I have a wait.." It was very odd, since we were just told we were the only ones on the list. We basically got the impression she just didn't want us there. Not a good feeling, especially when it takes so much effort to go anywhere with small children. She told us we could try again and they're open until 4. Based on the cold reception alone, no thanks. **in response to the owner's message, thank you for responding, but the recollection of events below in your response is not accurate. I understand it's tempting to rewrite history, but really an apology would have been sufficient. NO ONE said they were getting a table ready. That's different than being on a waitlist. We gladly would have patiently waited if that were the case... like I said, we wanted to try you out. There were NO other parties with small kids. There weren't any other parties either. We were literally waiting at the entrance outside. We waited for over 10minutes outside looking at the menu, etc. in the heat with babies in tow. I went in to ask about getting food to go during our wait (once again, we were the only party) after everyone picked what they wanted, and was told we were not able to get food to-go due to the "waitlist." At that time, I actually told the hostess that we would not be able to stay because we had small children with us.. NO ONE was setting up high chairs or hurrying to help us out as you state. She actually seemed annoyed to have to talk to us again, if I'm being totally frank. Her tone was very unwelcoming. I'm sure many other patrons may have had a great experience at your restaurant over the years, which is why we wanted to go there. I'm sure you have busy days, and I realize your restaurant isn't that big. It's great you have been in business so long, but that doesn't mean that this didn't happen. Unfortunately, we DID in fact have a cool, snarky reception today.. perhaps it was an off day for your staff, I'm not sure. Based on your response, maybe it's not so surprising. It really ruined our lunch actually. It was my brother's birthday, to top it all off, not that you care. I also looked at other reviews after your response to find that other people have also complained of the same treatment by the same woman at the front of the house. Maybe this person should reflect on how they are treating people, and try to be kinder. Maybe management should sit down with this person to see what is going on that's creating this type of energy. That aside, no one would have tried to call us for a table, as you state, because as I said, the hostess told me I could try to come back before you closed at 4, and I indicated we could not return later. I made sure she knew we were leaving. If there actually was a family who came after us and got the table you supposedly were rushing to set up, I'm very happy they could enjoy lunch together. What happened was a real shame and hopefully next time someone comes in a similar situation, it can be handled better (i.e. accommodating a request for takeout or giving the estimated wait time). And if something happens again like today, then maybe you could just apologize with some sincerity and try to improve. read more

We ordered from the Buxton Munch last Friday. My in-laws recommend the tacos. While on vacation we drove about 30 miles to see what the hype was. Let me tell you they delivered!! I have a shellfish allergy and they took it every seriously and cooked my grouper tacos separately from my husbands shrimp tacos. The tacos were amazing and the staff was so helpful. You have to try the tacos! I really appreciate the staff taking care of my allergy because a lot of restaurants don't care or tell me I can't eat there. Thank you Buxton Munch!! Just went for lunch with a party of 7. Food was fantastic! We all got something different and everyone said the food was great! I got the blackened mahi-mahi wrap with fries. The wrap was filled with fish and was great and the fries were unbelievably good! The actually restaurant was super clean and a cool place. The waitress we had was super nice even when we added on a few extra things after we all got food. Restaurant is small so if you have a large party you may have to sit separate unless you can all fit at the bar. If it is busy you may have to wait outside. We went to this place after we found out there was a 1 1/2 wait for the ferry. Not many choices for lunch around this area. So we ended up here. Had a small wait which we expected. Actually got sat pretty quick. 5e woman that came out to get us for our table didn't welcome us, ask how I was or anything, just called out our name and saw I had a bottled water and said "you can't take that in here" turned and stood there. When I came back in she didn't even walk us toward the table, actually bar stools, just point to the back of the restaurant. I brought a bottled water because we were told it would be about 15-30 minutes and the wait was outside on a bench in 90 degree weather. We were waited on by a young man that was very nice and he checked up on us somewhat consistently. There was a point where we were out of sodas and water and we asked another lady behind the bar for refills and she wasn't very friendly but asked what we were drinking and walked off to never see her again. At least on our end of the bar. Another young man, and I mean young, like maybe 16 behind the bar???? Took care our drinks refills. Food was good. Average I'd say. "Hospitality was quite lacking tho. My large family found this hidden gem 22 years ago. We visit the OBX 2 to 3 times a year. This is always our first stop on the day we arrive and always make sure to visit at least 2 other times during our week long visit. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the hostess who not only makes you feel welcome but I'm amazed she always remembers our family. She always asks us how we have been etc. Next is the amazing food and service. The owners must hand pick their servers as we have always had amazing service I don't remember ever not seeing a smile on everyone's face. When you go make sure to order the soup and the best fish tacos ever. Then as we leave the hostess who is also the cashier makes sure to ask us not only how our meals were but how was our service was. And of course our answer is always fantastic as always and can't wait to come back. When our week is up I look so forward to coming back for my delicious seafood and the friendly faces. This was our first time back to Buxton Munch since pre-COVID times. It was always a highlight of our trips to Hatteras and the standard setter for all other fish tacos. We were a little nervous because SO MANY places we used to visit on the Outer Banks have disappeared or declined in quality leading to big disappointments. I am so happy to report that Buxton Munch has suffered no such fate!! The fish tacos are at least as good as we remembered and my younger kids are now old enough to truly appreciate their high quality. We were lucky enough to be there when they had fresh rock fish (highly recommend getting it blackened) as an extra option for the tacos and dang, those will make a believer out of you! The service is exceptional with all staff being welcoming, friendly, and truly caring. This is all to rare these days and so refreshing to find at one of our favorite spots. Add to this the fact that the restaurant itself has clearly been extremely well maintained. It is VERY clean and this adds to the comfort of dining with them. I hesitated to even leave a review because it can already be pretty busy at times, but these folks deserve credit for their obvious commitment quality and hard work! We were looking for a spot to grab lunch and came across Buxton Munch Co. through a quick search and thank goodness for Yelp because I would never have noticed this restaurant tucked away in a strip mall. We arrived during peak lunch hours so naturally there was a wait but after a few minutes, there was a big turnover and our table was available in no time. He ordered their signature fish tacos and I opted for the taco salad (served in a huge taco bowl!) with fish. Everything was very fresh and tasty but I wouldn't say it totally wowed us. Service was great and the owner was super friendly and overall atmosphere is fun with its quirky and happy decor. This resto is a small joint (no pun intended) right next to an ABC store and designed with a hodgepodge of interesting Hippie trappings & other knickknacks. Had the crab avocado wrap made with crab cakes, guacamole, lettuce. It came with tortillas. It was pretty tasty; needed a little more crab but for the price (~$11) it's acceptable. A salsa (or dip?) for the tortillas would have been great. Tasted their chicken wasabi wrap (which was not in their specialty list but my friend don't eat seafood); it was a chicken salad-in-a-wrap. It was not bad (had better chicken salad but this was not technically a chicken salad per se). Also had their chocolate chip cookies, they were good. Staff was nice. Stopped in here after reading the reviews online and I wasn't disappointed. My wife ordered the fish tacos and everything was so fresh, truly I recommend this if you visit Buxton Munch. I ordered the French dip melt and it was awesome, the broth that came with it was very delicious. Our server was very friendly and the atmosphere was really nice. Only reason for the 4 out of 5 stars is it took a bit longer than I would have liked to get a water refill and our check, but it was a very busy day as there was a line outside and I understand. We missed our name the first time because we were waiting in our car. They had told us 30 minutes so we were awaiting in the ac for a bit and we're gonna head out near the door after ten minutes. Great lunch place. We had a party of 7 with a baby and three children, they have us plenty of room and attention. The fish tacos were terrific: well plated, great sauce and salsa, and very good flavors (and one order was enough for two of us). Blackened fish wrap was the winner for me - mild rich flavor & healthy portion of wish perfectly accompanied by the garnishes and grilled wrap. Buffalo shrimp wrap was good too but as expected the meat was a but overpowered by the fry breading and wing sauce. Still great! This lunch spot is excellent! I had been craving a fish sandwich all week and was not disappointed with the delicious piece of rock fish served on an 8in roll. My husband and in-laws got fish tacos. All of the ingredients were fresh as promised! We also got an order of chips and salsa, I'm pretty sure the chips were made in house, and sweet potato fries. No frozen fries here! They were definitely made in house too. Not only was the food good, the service was great. It's complicated but basically they were flexible and able to seat all four of us together even though my in-laws got there earlier and had already ordered at the bar. The staff was all friendly. We got lunch to go and it took quite a while although we only ordered two wraps. We liked the blackened Mahi Mahi wrap, which was better than the Chicken Avocado wrap. I really hate leaving bad reviews anywhere - especially this place, where the food has been consistently great in the 10-plus years I've been coming here, and the service as well - the blonde young woman who was at the bar was extremely helpful and kind. However, the encounter I had with one server - Bree - today, was enough to put a damper on the final day of family vacation. Waiting 55 minutes for 4 sandwiches is a lot - I was quoted up to 30, but I have also worked in food service, so I understood the backup. What I didn't understand was this server's horrible attitude toward a hungry customer who was checking in on an order status: she was rude and combative when I was not, and acted very put out when I asked for some potato chips to hold me over. (At this point it had been 45 minutes, which I don't think is unreasonable.) After finally getting my food 55 minutes in - which, again, is a VERY UNREASONABLE amount of time - Bree screamed "you're welcome" at me as I left the door; passive aggressively attacking me for not saying "thank you" for the bag of four sandwiches. I get that saying thank you would have been the polite thing to do, but I was starving, and my "thank you" was my generous tip. Anyway bottom line, servers shouldn't be rude and aggressive towards customers. I shouldn't have to leave feeling attacked and offended by a server, when all I did was hungrily ask for my family's food. I hope the service here improves next summer. UPDATE: okay, it was over 50 minutes, as proven by the text message stamps on the inquiries from my hungry family on the status of their food. But I can see from previous unhappy reviews and responses that management here is not receptive to bad experiences, and chooses to further insult paying customers rather than entertain the notion that their staff is capable of being rude. There are many other places on the island where a family of three can eat lunch for cheaper than this and get just as good food.
