My boo and I were hoping to share one plate so we could sample three different BBQ meats, but the portion was a little smaller than we expected. The brisket, pulled pork, and hush puppies were a bit dry for our taste. The standout was definitely the pulled chicken--it was the most flavorful and moist of the three. As for the sides, my boo really enjoyed the green beans but wasn't a fan of the baked beans. I actually liked the baked beans because they weren't overly sweet--they had a nice, balanced flavor. Overall, it was a decent BBQ meal with a few highlights, but I wish the portions were a bit more generous and some of the meats were a little juicier. Meal was about $28.

It felt like it was authentic Carolina BBQ. I wasn't a fan of the "yankee BBQ" sauce, but the Carolina BBQ was very delicious. Only down falls: - sitting inside is all open windows so there was no escape from the heat (but survivable) - bathrooms didn't have a changing table.

The…read moreservice was definitely a highlight--everyone we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and we were taken care of quickly. The food, however, didn't quite meet our expectations. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was a bit underseasoned for my taste, and the baked beans were softer than I prefer. I also tried the key lime pie, which unfortunately wasn't my favorite. My boyfriend had the brisket, and while it was tender, it didn't have the smoky flavor we were hoping for. Overall, while we appreciated the welcoming service, the food didn't stand out compared to other BBQ we've had. It may come down to personal preference, but it wasn't quite the experience we were hoping for during a special occasion.

The food was an OK. My pulled pork had a smoky taste but was definitely dry. In a state known for pork BBQ, this was average at best. The slaw, however, tasted very fresh and was not mayonnaisey ; I liked it. The hand-cut fries were OK, but would have been excellent if they had been hot. My dining companion's burger was cooked as requested and she thought it was very good. Service was OK, but definitely not overly attentive. Compared to prices down the road in Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, the restaurant is a good value. Based on our experience, BJ's Carolina Cafe mainly caters to a local crowd. All in all, it's fine, especially if it's nearby or on your way to/from Outer Banks.
