We have been coming down to Hatteras for years and now have a permanent place down here. I can only remember going to Fatty's once in all that time - took my kids for ice cream a long time ago. My husband and I decided to eat there for the first time last night. First of all, the decor is so quirky! Loved sitting there and laughing at all the funny signs on the wall. And I didn't catch any employees names, but the young woman at the register was delightful. Seriously. She knows that menu and was so helpful...very animated and sweet. She helped set the tone there, which is so important. The food was very good. I had fish and my husband had the shrimp and grits. Both were served hot and were fresh and really tasty. The young man who served the food was also very friendly and attentive. Fatty's is a very casual, moderately priced restaurant. I'm glad we gave it a try and we'll be back. read more

Good food and reasonably priced. We got in at 8:40 and Everything closes at 9 in this area so we were worried we couldn't find anything but Fattys came through! Manager said the fryer is still hot so what do you want, music to my ears!! We got fried fish, shrimp, coleslaw, and fries to go. Staff was super friendly and accommodating. Food was pretty decent. We had a group of 10. When we ordered, they mentioned bringing all the food out at once. We thanked them, but said it wasn't necessary. They could bring it out as it was finished. The staff kept coming out and apologizing for the wait. Then they mentioned not having hot dogs and someone going out to get more. Had we known this, we simply would have ordered something different. Finally, I went to ask if they could bring all of the food that wasn't hot dogs so some of the kids could eat. The manager mentioned the food will fly right out once it's all ready. I brought 8 teenagers and didn't want to cause a scene, so I left it at that. The younger staff members continued to apologize and were very nice. Overall, it was a bad experience and I wouldn't return, in spite of the food (probably a 3 or 4 out of 5). read more

We stopped in on a whim after the place we had wanted to go for lunch was closed. One of the patrons had told us that if we sat down, they'd bring us a menu (this is not correct - you have to go and order at the counter). Not a big deal since we weren't told that by a staff member. We ordered our food and were given a number to have at the table. The food was delivered fairly quickly. The soda machine was out of both Dr. Pepper and Coke, but they did have Cherry Coke. Overall, we all enjoyed our food. The biggest issue was that my SIL and I both got the fried shrimp and we only got one cocktail sauce as the kitchen needed to make more. We shared the one sauce and the waitress had to come back and apologize at least two more times that it wasn't made yet. By the time we received it, our shrimp were barely warm. As this was the start of summer, I would have expected the kitchen staff to be a bit more prepared. The shrimp themselves were breaded well and had a really good flavor (had I not used any sauce in the beginning, I would have been fine eating them plain). Came in here after a dinner for ice cream and was greeted by a friendly employee. When we entered, it was a bit overstimulating because one side is a place to sit down and order food while the other side is ice cream with merch. There is also a beautiful koi fish in the pond! We stopped by while staying a weekend in Buxton. The 2 gentlemen working were both very welcoming, friendly and professional. We ordered Eggs Your Way for breakfast. Our food came out very quickly. Eggs were cooked perfectly, bacon was crispy, biscuit was fluffy, and the home fries were delicious as well. The staff checked on us several times to be sure we were pleased with our food. Dining room was fun. Lots of interesting and funny quotes to read while waiting. The place has a beachy, surfer vibe which was perfect for our beach vacation. The ice cream selection looked great. "Decent, inexpensive lunch food near Hatteras lighthouse" We stopped by this place for lunch on a weekday after visiting the Cape Hatteras lighthouse-- it's super close and convenient. You order at a counter, get a number, and they bring the food to you, and then you pay after you're finished. The place was VERY roomy, and had an outdoor seating area. We didn't try the ice cream, but we did have sandwiches. Staff were friendly and helpful. It's not true "table service"-- you get your own drinks and such-- but they were nice. Food: Signature dog-- my son opted for this crazy dish, that comes with mac & cheese, an egg, fries, and more on top of a hot dog. It was a giant hot dog-- he wasn't quite sure how to eat it! But he managed-- said it was "a real mix of flavors" but he seemed to enjoy it. Came with a side of plain Lays chips, and cost $7. Philly cheese steak-- Certainly not a philly cheesesteak you'd write home about, but the meat was good and served nice and hot. The mushrooms looked like they came from a can, and there wasn't a ton of peppers and such on it, but I enjoyed the sandwich overall. Also came with plain Lays chips. Cost $9. Note they do have Cheerwine both in bottles and in their fountain. For what it was-- an alternative place to grab an inexpensive lunch than a fast food place-- it was decent. Between 3-4 stars, but I'll round up to be nice. I'd not rush back, but I wouldn't be upset if I found myself there again. read more

Everything was great. We stopped in for lunch on the way back from Avon. We are on Hatteras for VACA but love in Florida. This place is has some seriously good food at great prices. I had the mahi bites - a giant serving for $10?!?! Yes, they were fresh and tasted really good. That plate at home(another touristy location) would be half as big and cost $25. Glad to try this place we've been seeing for several years, but we usually come in the off season when they are closed. Had a great breakfast! Bacon was on the thicker side, which we loved! Ordered cheese on my scrambled eggs which they left off, but hubby's had the cheese and I would def recommend it. They were just so busy when we were there and all the workers were doing their best so I didn't want to send mine back. Home fries are real potatoes, diced and we added grilled onions. Toast was thicker bread, which I also liked. Biscuits are a premade type, but gravy was good. Would def eat here again. Only complaint is I ordered the tougher parfait based on a picture in another review with strawberries and blueberries and mine came with apples and bananas and I don't like either of those, but I should've asked when I ordered. Bottom Line: Very casual eatery with friendly staff serving comfort food. Fatty's Eatery is a super casual place so you can throw your clothes over your bathing suit and you'll be welcome. The staff is very friendly and they seem to be very collaborative too. The decor is very beachy - the floors are gritty with sand and the walls have amusing murals on them. (I particularly like the shark with eyebrows and it's tongue hanging out of its mouth.) I like that the food is good ol' fashioned American chow that is nourishing. I also appreciate that they have both a Pepsi soda fountain and a Coca-Cola soda fountain! We stopped in for breakfast sandwiches before climbing the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and they were tasty and reasonably priced. read more

Oh, this might not be a fair review but is a good one. We were running late for lunch, and it was raining. We headed here totally on a whim, and only realized after had ordered that they soon would be closing. But they never said it... they were chipper, helpful, and rushed... it felt like they were a little short-staffed, probably a product of COVID-related difficulties getting folks back and that it was after the summer season. I make it a point to come here every time in in Hatteras, simply for the shrimp n grits. These are the best shrimp n grits I've had anywhere! The sauce is awesome, and the price is very good as well. I've traveled all the way to Charleston, SC before to try shrimp n grits that were hyped up along tv, and they were terrible lol. Everything my wife had tried at Fatty's is very good as well. It took them over a half an hour to prepare it. 15 minutes into the process, I asked if it was too late to cancel the order. I was told that the shrimp were already in the fryer. My husband and I stopped by for dinner. Gives a very beachy, laid back vibe. There are some arcade games in the back and picnic tables outside. Good, simple fare with fun murals on the walls. My crab cake sandwich with optional lettuce, tomatoes and onions was really good. My husband's BLT was awesome. Otherwise, it would have gotten one star. Husband order the shrimp po-boy and it could not have been more disappointing. A few shrimp tossed on a big, dry bread roll with some lettuce and tomatoes (definitely don't order this!), with very little sauce in the side. Daughter ordered chicken fingers w/ fries. They absolutely must have tossed it in the fryer frozen because the chicken was somewhat crispy on the outside and not very done inside - super gross. My Philly cheese-steak was passable - nothing wrong with it, but it lacked any flavor and was super greasy. Arrived for an early lunch here after visiting the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. They serve breakfast until 11:30, which they are very strict about apparently. Food was good. The staff told me that they were out of biscuits so they didn't have what I wanted (biscuits and gravy) so I ordered the Fisherman's Batter Bar. It came with sausage and gravy, hash browns, eggs, and bacon, with a choice of either a Belgium waffle or French Toast. Again they didn't have my first choice, Belgium waffle, so I accepted the French Toast. Despite this, I was still happy with my meal. My husband wanted to order lunch, but it was it 11:10, so they would not take his lunch order. The three girls at the register acted clueless so the service left much to be desired. Not the best restaurant experience but the food was worth the money we paid, portions and prices were very good.
