I'm in LOVE with the decor in this place. It's got that French countryside-bohemian-chic flair / Brooklyn style restaurant. It seems to be packed every time I go there. The cocktails are amazing, retro and classic. The food is fantastic. The ambiance is so cozy and cool. I love going in for a glass of wine, and munching on the olives and saussage slices marinated in thyme and olive oil. The last time I was there though, it was missing the thyme : the best part. :-( Some of the food tends to be served in small amounts, so I refer to it as tapas. Which I think is what they were going for. Some items seem over-priced, but if you order several and share with your dinner guests, then you should have enough to eat. read more

I have been to the New york location a while ago and loved the menu and design of the place, so when I knew that there is one in Paris, I was delighted! I came in for a late lunch mid week and it was almost empty and was greeted with a friendly wait staff. I had the Croque Madame with mushrooms , topped with a sunny side up egg. Perfect! I liked that they have a small menu but enough vegetarian options when you don't feel like eating meat or heavy. Their desserts are not to be missed with the TarteTatin Tatin, Chocolate cake or their French toast! I would definitely recommend this place for a good treat. read more

So this is where tout hip paris is hiding...i went early and secured a seat at the bar. The place is well styled, good for food as well as wine and cocktails. It gets verh crowded. I had the veal roti, with mash and a salad of brussels sprouts. Really nice, good flavours and well prepared. You can see a lot of the food being prepared behind the bar, which seams a bit unpractical. They also have small tapas style plates, which seem to be a bit overpriced. Service is not Spectacular, hence the 4 stars. Food makes up for it though. So a good place to go to if you are close and they have a spot, but don't go out of your way to get there. read more

We vowed not to go to a restaurant twice in Paris but we definitely broke that vow for Buvette. I had eaten in NYC the week prior and loved it. We felt the same about Paris. It's a non threatening and totally relaxing place to consume the best food of the trip. I'm a natural wine fan and Paris is the place to be to try lots of natural wine. Buvette has a nice selection and since we just returned from Burgundy we thought we'd stop by for a taste. We slid up to the bar and were quickly greeted with the wine list. We turned to the Burgundy section and found an interesting village wine from Gevrey-Chambertain. As mentioned by many, the decor is gorgeous and understated with all the fresh flowers, fruits and baked goods out for display. It's a small space with maybe 10 tables like many cool Paris wine bars and the feel is authentic if a bit stage managed. The wine was very good in the sense that it was an excellent example of natural wine, bio-dynamic with minimal intervention in the winemaking process. This is something hard to find outside of New York and San Francisco. We ordered the large cheese plate and this too had well sourced cheese. Everything had been well thought out, thats for sure. Here's the but. This is a highly polished version of a Paris wine bar/cafe. Maybe too well polished. It just a bit too perfect. Also, it has a lot of competition and that may be the problem. This niche market of Parisian natural wine bars is all the rage now so maybe it doesn't make sense to fly 6,000 miles for an American version when there are so many local ones to try. It's a subtle difference and maybe it doesn't matter to most people but lets face it, the place follows a formula and that's a restriction for me. read more

The breakfast there is phenomenal and I'd highly recommend the CR' Q MME . Also the waffle sandwich is yummy. I'd like to also establish that this place has the best coffee ever. Best croque monsuir I have ever had. And I don't even like ham and cheese sandwiches. It was just so delicious it was unreal. Like crispy on the outside, creamy and gooey on the inside. My husband and I each ordered one, and the ratatouille appetizer to share, which was also delicious. We substituted burrata for the goat cheese since we both don't like goat cheese, which was nice of them to do. We wanted to come back the whole trip!! read more

Buvette Ah ha, I see what they did here. Simple, very simple menu with charming, very charming details. The "French tapas" menu includes 4 sections--tartines, fish, meat and vegetables--with three or four options in each. My friend and I shared the salmon rillettes, Brussel sprout salad and a aligot tartine. The aligot was light and creamy and the shaved ham on top was paper thin; the combination layered on a lightly buttered toast was delightful. The salmon rillettes were served in a generous bocal and had a prominent yet delicate (not overpowering) taste of the fish. The Brussel sprout salad was a mix of shaved Brussel sprouts, a dry salty cheese and walnuts. It was nicely presented but lacked in flavor. All in all the meal was enjoyable. We sat at the bar and had a few friendly exchanges with the barman/server. The restaurant is charming, intimate and romantic. Perfect for a tête-à-tête or dinner date. read more

I tried the Coq au Vin and sampled a Croque Forestier. I could not for the life of me identify if the ceiling was lined in tin or just painted chrome. Ooh, I really like this place. Yes, it's so young, hip and cool and now that I know it's a New York transplant I'm not at all surprised but hey, affordable, tasty food. What's not to like? We came here a bit before 8pm on a Tuesday and it was completely packed. So she scribbled our name on the pillar with a piece of chalk and instantly, I was sold! (Oh, little hipster shabby-chic touches, how you get me every time!!) I don't think we waited more than 15minutes, sitting on the pretty much empty street with a glass of wine (not nearly as *potentially* charming as it sounds but the wine was good!) Oh yes the food. My favourite bit. I love small plates, you can get a bit of everything without spending too much! We got the salmon rillette - fresh fresh fish with crisp dill. Pretty obvious flavours but so surprisingly punchy. I think it's the dill, they use it very liberally, it's really quite 'refreshing'. Next up, the croque moisseur. It was super cheesy and thankfully the ham wasn't too salty. Good, but sth felt lacking - it almost felt 'americanised', kind of that dirty satisfaction of eating Domino's pizza dough. And finally, the ratatouille (yes, just three small plates between the two of us). This was served on bread, which I didn't see coming / thought was odd.. WE DIDN'T KNOW WE ORDERED SO MUCH BREAD! (& it really fills you up!) I don't have much to say about it, it was better than average but nothing you've never had before. But that's okay, dessert was spectacular. Chocolate mousse - simply delightful. Rich, dark and decadent + light chantilly cream artfully dolloped on top and stabbed with two spoons. I'd hop on the eurostar just for this! Buvette Gastrotheque It seems kind of silly for an American to go out for American food while in Paris. Silly or not Buvette Gastrotheque was worth it. A second branch of American chef Jody Williams' rustic chic cafe, Buvette has everything a foodie wants-- local ingredients, a varied but compact menu, and a welcoming atmosphere. We recently stopped by for dinner with an ex-pat couple we have known for years. She had come across Buvette earlier in the day when an acquaintance had brought her there for lunch. She said the croque she was served had been excellent. As they are both travelers with tons of experience and her husband is a gifted chef himself, we trust their opinion. We were not disappointed. Situated in the "colorful" cartier of Pigalle at 28 Rue Henri Monnier, the restaurant is cozy to the point of being cramped, but this is true of any good eatery in the city of lights. Our waiter was a pleasantly scruffy young man who would look entirely at home in any hipster neighborhood. He navigated our diverse levels of linguistic competence (ranging from excellent to not so excellent) with considerable aplomb. I ordered a soixante-quinze, which the waiter helpfully translated into English as a French 75. It was perfectly executed, which I expected since it was invented in Paris. My wife's Bee's Knees was tasty if a little sweet. Our friends Whiskey Sour was much better than I would have expected. The restaurant serves small plates so we shared amongst ourselves. The stand-out of the evening was pesto with fava beans serve on bread in the style of Bruschetta. I had ordered it because I was curious what the chef would do with the beans. It was extremely tasty -- it had an excellent tang of garlic without being too garlicky. We had a gorgeous artichoke served with garlic aioli on the side. I am not a big artichoke fan, they seem like more trouble than they are worth, but in spite of that I enjoyed the dish. The normally tedious plucking of one leaf after another left plenty of time for conversation. Our remaining main courses were a plate of lamb and a chicken dish that was the special of the evening. The lamb gained our seal of approval but the chicken was undistinguished -- disappointing for a special. For dessert we shared a fondant of chocolate and what was billed as an apricot crumble. While the apricot crumble was indeed apricot it bore no resemblance to anything I would call a crumble. It was an apricot clafoutis -- a very nice calfoutis, but certainly not a crumble. The fondant was indeed what it pretended to be and was quite good -- dense and gooey and full of cocoa. Both dishes came with creme fraiche rather than whipped cream. This surprising choice was a hit. The tang of the cream fraiche was a lovely contrast to the sweetness of the chocolate and to a lesser extent the apricots as well. I suggest you give the Buvette Gastrotheque a try if your are in Pigalle and even if you are not it would be worth the metro ride. They have continuous service from late morning to midnight. No reservations are accepted so if you come at a popular time, you may have to wait. read more

As soon as you enter, you can't help but feel welcomed by the room. It is cozy, and buzzing. I found Buvette by searching for modern French cuisine. The menu had a very small selection including classics such coq au vin, and gigot d'agneau. I believe that small menus are actually better, so that was fine by me. Perhaps what was "modern" about the menu was the format. The plates were small (well, by American standards perhaps), and seemingly made to share. So in fact, it was a perfect place to catch up and share a meal with friends. I would also feel quite welcome here dining on my own. read more

We tried their scrambled eggs with salmon which had the right balance between the salmon, sour cream, great bread and a light touch of high-quality olive oil. What a delightful experience! Traveling to Paris for the first time, my wife, daughter and I came upon Buvette in the Pigalle neighborhood, having spent the earlier part of the day touring nearby Montmartre. We were greeted by friendly staff who tolerated my insistence on trying to use my high school French and when I faltered irretrievably, came to the rescue with perfect English. Our food was delicious. My wife loved her carrot salad and I my ratatouille et chevre frais tartine. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her Shepherd's Pie, perfectly spiced with a hint of we thought was fennel. Lastly my coq au vin served in a earthenware crock was perfect! Many other things we would have liked to try but will have to wait for a next visit! Couldn't recommend more highly! read more

So you know, this is an American chef's outpost in France (or one of them). There is one in New York as well, which I haven't been to. As an American who visits Paris regularly, I usually tend to go to places that are either low key, very French (pas d'Anglais), or established. This restaurant would go under the third category. The decor and menu are darling, with artisan light bulbs and seating at a rough hewn bar (actually I couldn't see the bar too well because of the light bulbs). But, decor ranks low on my list. I came to eat and drink, man. It could look like a Southern cafeteria for all I care. The food was good, and not just a knockoff of bistrot fare that you could get, excellently prepared, all over the city. It wasn't too nuanced either. I had the steak parmentiere, and it was the last great one of those I had. I appreciated that they sold it in the dead of summer, even though it is a fairly winter dish. I want one whenever I want one. You can order food all out of order. As you may have heard, the French have cheese for dessert, but here you can start out with it. You can really have it YOUR WAY. Also it is open late and the kitchen is open late. Tres agreable. The wines were pretty good, but sadly I don't remember them well. This is a place currently beloved by both the French (at least, our friends) and tourists. It is a bit over touristed, which is NOT BUVETTE's FAULT, but if you are looking for the FRENCH experience (while in Paris, France), you may be subsumed into loud American conversations. I mean, off the walls loud, blah blah blah "when we were in Paris, HONEY, we STROLLED down Rue De Rivoli every day then went over to the RIVE GAUCHE where we had a cafe at les DEUX MAGOTS. We went ALL OUT. Don't you LOVE the wine?" I had to dock a star for that, just kind of as a warning to other Americans who don't want to spend precious time in Paris hearing Americans living out loud with their fresh fun attitude. That old Parisian rudeness which I so rarely experienced myself might come in handy here. I think our waitress was American too. She was nice, and quite attentive. Prices decent, not cheap. But it's 2015, Pigalle is chic, and we all have to survive. Get the loud American parties out of there and this is a very romantic first spot to get a bite in Paris. read more

An insulting experience. Today, October 16, we went to lunch at Buvette. Cute restaurant, decent enough fare. However, we had an experience with the waiter that RUINED our lunch. After our croque forriestre and salad (rare for Paris) we ordered a tarte tartin for desert. The waiter (a Frenchman with a close beard and eyeglasses) returned to let us know that the kitchen had run out. Not a problem, we said. We'll just take a coffee. Not 5 minutes latter at a table next to us (2 Parisienne women) who ordered desert after us is served a tarte tartin. Discreetly, I asked the waiter in fact if it was. He said yes, and then started making excuses etc. This conversation with our waiter was carried out in French - so there was no misunderstanding as to what happened. I lived in Geneve for a number of years so absolutely recognize this passive-aggressive behavior. It is insulting and infuriating & surprising given Buvette's connection to the USA. Amazing brunch. The menu was simple, but my sister and I both found dishes we wanted to try. She had the croque Forrester (bread/cheese/mushroom combo was amazing) and I had the salmon with scrambled eggs (eggs were perfectly cooked and the salmon melted in my mouth). The entire menu was in French, but both of the waiters who attended to us during the meal spoke English and explained the menu to us. We decided to order the chocolate mousse, which was really sweet, so we ordered a pot of tea to go along with it. It was a fantastic meal, made even more so because it's relatively tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. We saw some customers who looked like they were regulars. It is a small place, which is perfect for solo travelers or small groups who prefer some quiet time. We live in NYC so will definitely go check out the location here very soon! read more

While the menu is literally small, the fare is FANTASTIC... you could order anything on the menu and be pleased. Classical music in the background with a lovely staff that were all so friendly. i have been wanting to go to the ny location of this restaurant for years, but something always comes up, so i've never made it. last night i was trying to figure out where to eat for dinner by myself in paris, and i thought, "buvette!" i never thought i would make it to the paris location before the ny one. this place is super cute, and they make nice cocktails. i had an aperol spritzer, which was nice and refreshing on a warm evening. since it was just me, i didn't get to try as much, but i had the beets and the smoked trout salad on lentils. i also got the lemon merengue tart for dessert. i sat at the bar, and it was pretty empty at 730 when i arrived, but it definitely filled up by the time i left. read more

The wait staff all speak English if you're so inclined and are very accommodating; my mother had a broken leg and my father was in a knee brace, it was never a problem. We ordered an artichoke dish, a nice viognier, coq au vin, the french equivolent of shepards pie, carrot cake and tarte tatin. All were excellent and a wonderful combination of flavors.
