This place was what I would expect for a classic diner. We went here for breakfast on a Friday morning. Seated right away. The service was good. Food was good. I ordered the apple chicken sausage breakfast. I personally wasn't a huge fan of the sausage because it was a little sweet but everything else was good. The potatoes were a bit over cooked (some charring). The biscuit is the way to go for your bread option, no doubt. I am always torn when it was overall decent between 3 & 4 stars. read more

Use to be my favorite when we came to town...they updated their Restaurant too...but I guess they have to pay for that renovation. They were going to charge $5.00 for me to change pasta for the rice...that's plain crazy. It's Chicken Marsala...it's suppose to be on pasta! Then when I get the food the bite of chicken tasted fine but the pasta tasted like they put some chemical in it...made my lips numb and the inside of my mouth. Could have been the wine they used. Looks like an ordinary diner but, once you step inside, it's has soooo much seating (which is important to me) and a very folksy/small diner vibes. The best part of the dining experience was our server, ALEX! Major props!!! He was so respectful, energetic, flamboyant, and an all-around great human being. Stopped here for breakfast and it was really good. They're known for their delicious cinnamon biscuits so I figured I'd try the Biscuit Benedict. The hollandaise was flavorful and of a nice consistency and the eggs were poached perfectly! Husband had the chicken fried steak and eggs and it was "...damned good... There was a time where a manager (during the evening shift) was talking about a waitress in a negative way to us and we thought it was weird. My favorite drink item to order is the bloody mary. Recently the restaurant Marie Calendars shut their doors suddenly. I mean kicked out the customers with pie still in their mouths and slammed the doors behind them. Never to open again. All of the Marie Calender's across the bay just gone. This was really bad because an organization that I'm a member of had monthly morning meetings at Marie Calendars. Well, our next meeting was already scheduled and people had paid their fee for breakfast. We were scrambling for a new venue that could be comparable to what we had at Marie's. They were very accommodating and the food was fantastic. We didn't get a choice but if there was anyone there that wanted something special like Vegetarian, I'm sure they would have worked to accommodate. It was a nice mix of Bacon, Eggs, Potatoes and Fruit. Muffins on the table for our choosing. A breakfast of champions. Everyone was very happy. We loved Marie's but Buttercup came through. I have to say with better customer service as well. We were very pleased all around with the venue. Also, on a side note, they have a full bar. If I ever want that diner feel with a cocktail I know where I'm heading. This place is great. read more

I love this place! (I also love my possible future ex-wife Caroline who works here, but that's another story). Most of the places in the area were closed since it was after 9, but luckily Buttercup is open until 10. It was actually around 9:50 but the awesome hostess warmly welcomed us and didn't even make a fuss that they were 10 minutes to closing. In fact, we felt kind of bad and asked if it was ok, and she said "NO PROBLEM! NO HURRY!" We were seated in a nice comfy booth and were promptly greeted by the awesome Caroline. After quickly taking our drink order, she suggested the potato skins and mozzarella sticks and we said yes. She said she'd be right back to take the rest of our order but wanted to get our appetizers going asap so that they would be out quicker. Wow! After blinking not more than three times, she returned in a flash with our drinks and was ready to take our main order. Chicken and penne pasta was ordered, a San Francisco burger, and some chicken fried steak. I think Caroline may have put our order on turbo, because after five more blinks our appetizers arrived. The potato skins were nice and crispy on the outside and moist and flaky on the inside - perfect! The toppings were nice and fresh too, including the super crispy green onions. Our mozzarella sticks were piping hot, and the cheese inside was very rich and super stretchy...it doesn't get any better than that! The attentive Caroline checked back to refill our drinks and also to drop some snarky abuse on us. It was at this point that I realized she might be my dream woman that I have been searching for all of my life. But anyways, back to the food.... Not long after, our main orders arrived and it was time to dig in. The portions were quite large, and everything was piping hot as it should be. The pasta was cooked perfectly, with a super rich and creamy sauce that went perfectly with its spinach and mushrooms, and the chicken fried steak and burger were both nice and thick, super juicy, and cooked to perfection...great stuff! To finish off, we all split an upside down apple walnut pie (which was HUGE!!) with a gallon of vanilla ice cream on top. Being so full already, it was hard to consume even an ounce more, but the food here is THAT good. Forcing myself to 120% full capacity is never a good idea, but I did it anyways. Maybe it was an unconscious effort to impress Caroline, or maybe even a conscious one LOL. I tried to get a discount at the last moment for having a tattoo of the Buttercup logo on my arm (which I even showed to her), but all I got was a cynical, patronizing laugh from Caroline...apparently she drives a hard bargain...the mark of a strong woman I have to say! =) We ended up staying until well after closing, but were never rushed to finish. All in all, a GREAT restaurant, obviously run by some great owners with a penchant for some great employee training. Hopefully on my next visit I can propose to Caroline, although I think I know what the answer will be....darn! =\ It's ok, I'll still love Buttercup just the same! read more

I didn't really have high expectations for either entree (sorry Buttercup!), but I must say I was pleasantly surprised! My chicken marsala was delicious and the steak was good too! I have been to the Buttercup restaurant in Concord several times, usually for a family member's birthday brunch, as its location is convenient for us. There is often a long wait for a table, and the food is usually at least fair tasting, but it varies considerably. The service is usually average, but the last time it was bad. The waitress was sarcastic and we had to ask to even get coffee refills. She acted like she did not want to be there. I eventually felt the same way. read more

A few days ago, I woke up seriously craving strawberry and whipped cream laced Belgian waffles. The nagging urge was bad y'all, baddd. It reminisced about the fresh waffles I would stand in a long line for in the cafeteria at a tech company I worked for just over a decade ago. The lady would pour and press the waffle right in front of you then ask what toppings you wanted to happily clog your arteries with. LOL! I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I salivate over almost anything strawberry topped or filled, so each time I would arrive at the front of that line, I would flirt with the lady so she'd give me extra strawberries and strawberry flavored syrup. I know, I know... I was bad but... Damn those Belgian waffles were gooood! That morning, I remembered that Buttercup offered waffles on their menu and thankfully strawberries are still in season so we decided to drop by. The restaurant appeared to have been newly remodeled. It was like they just unwrapped everything. Not that I ever visited this particular location before but everything looked nearly pristine. And the service... I have to say that the table service we received was very impressive. WHAT I ORDERED: Chicken Apple Aidells sausages and 2 sunny side up eggs with O'Brien potatoes and of course, Belgian waffleS (Yup I ordered 2 plates. Don't judge me.) with strawberries and light whipped cream. All were 2 thumbs up, especially the strawberry Belgians! DRINKS: Water and Peerless coffee. Need that caffeine! It was good. Not overdone. SERVICE: The whole staff was really nice. It's the kind of human interactions you want to start a (hopefully) nice day with. Our waitress though... Roxann was absolutely sweet, friendly, humorous, polite and attentive. Roxann was on it. If I owned a restaurant, or any service type establishment really, I would pray to have a staff member representing my business with Roxann's awesome attitude and work ethic. Grant it, I know this is the only time we've met her but first impressions, especially at restaurants, are an important factor in the munch time experience. I love these little mom and pop type of grills. Being a fan of the Buttercup in WC, I decided to give this one a shot for breakfast one morning. The place still withholds that somewhat outdated, somewhat 80s facade; and for that reason, I love it all the more. The layout is also quite spacious with plenty of seating arrangements, and they also provide a small bar. I came in fairly early and was greeted and seated by a warm, cheerful server. They offer a fantastic breakfast menu including a wonderful selection of omelets to choose from. I ended up getting their Chorizo Omelet consisting of : Spicy Mexican beef sausage, tomatoes, onions, Jack & Cheddar cheese and green chiles. The omelets also come with your choice of toast and hashbrowns. I opted out on the toast and just had the hash. I also ordered coffee. Coffee was actually pretty decent. Omelet than arrived looking decent in presentation. It turned our pretty good for the most. My only complaint is that the spices didn't taste as fresh as you should expect, though not horrendous. Overall it was pretty good. Prices are fairly reasonable too. Overall, friendly warm service, decent hearty food, and reasonable prices. Definitely going to visit again : ) read more

I loved Buttercup in downtown Oakland and I was hoping that this location was somewhat like that one. It for sure didn't disappoint, I ordered the Chorizo Omelette and it was bomb!! They don't do the folded egg omelette, it's more like a scramble than anything else but it was exactly how I like it!! All the food we got was good, baby boy ate a whole pancake and sausage, so he approved! The service was good, we were sat in as soon as we got in and the server was always coming around to check on us. All in all it was a good experience and we will be back. read more

First surprise was that they have a full bar, and second surprise was that I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast. My mom and I were looking for a casual breakfast spot and decided to give them a try. I had the veggie Benedict; spinach, tomato, and avocado topped with a perfectly poached egg. The O'Brien potatoes were pretty good too, except I'm not fond of the crispy bits sometimes found in breakfast potatoes. Ample seating, and an enclosed patio area as well. Solid choice for a simple breakfast dining experience. Oh yeah, can't forget about the friendly and courteous staff! read more

I could not believe this place was packed to waiting room capacity on a Sunday afternoon. I kept thinking how great it must be. It was OK. Maybe worthy of a 2.5? I ordered the black and blue burger - I think they call it that b'cuz after I ate it felt like my stomach had been beat up. It sat like a brick in my belly. They got a couple things on our order incorrect but the waitress was quick to correct (she is the reason for the second star) The food was hearty but just OK. My kids loved their burgers. We were seated properly and in a good location this is a very nice looking restaurant with a full bar and TVs so it can be a technical sport bar for watching game or event. Now for the food I ordered the fish and chips which came out still and rubbery and I could not pull them apart or cut him with my knife. I notified the waitress and she did not believe me so I picked up the fish then try to pull the fish apart with my hands. I've been trying to cut the fish with my knife finally she believed me. Then asked what else I would like on the menu I mentioned I will take the chicken fingers meal. He brought out the chicken fingers 35 minutes later my companion was already eating her dinner and was finished.. I received the chicken strip dinner with french fries and no side and was charged full price. I received an order of chicken strips and not the dinner. So we were batting zero on my mail. I received my check and the fish was removed but the chicken dinner was full price. I was very upset at the service that I received regarding my meal, service I was given regarding my mail, and the end result of the entire atmosphere was a very unprofessional. The manager made no excuses and the server just said sorry and went around about her business. I felt that I was mistreated in this restaurant and I also felt that they expected me to eat old and bad fish. However I did get a little sick because of the side order I received with my fish with coleslaw and I believe the coleslaw was not fresh or even quality enough to be served. But I was hungry and I trusted them you would be healthy and safe to eat. I gave this business to start with a simple case that it was a beautiful interior location but they need better Cooks, better servers, better hosting, and that's our problem solving. read more

What can I say, this place reminds me of Lyons, which was what it was before it became Buttercup. It's diner style food with a full bar. I only come here when visiting my parents. Not by choice. The service is hit and miss. There is a flamboyant server there who turns me off with her attitude and her super long nails that sometimes dips into the food on the plate she is carrying. They are very flexible with menu items, they cater for special diets and big groups! Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all excellent-I have multiple favorite dishes and I am yet to eat anything bad! You won't be able to eat dessert as the portions are huge-but don't miss out-go JUST for dessert! It's well worth it! The only reason I gave it 1 star, is because you can't give it any less! I will never go to this restaurant again! Last night I went and ordered a hamburger and asked for it well done. When my burger came it was burnt beyond being edible. The whole burger with grill lines was burnt to black charcoal, which was all I could taste. I normally will never send food back, but this time I did and asked for them to cook it medium. Apparently cook didn't appreciate that! I don't know if it was some kind of joke, but the next one came back and was completely raw inside. At this time I just canceled my order while the rest of the table ate. What was even more discouraging is the young waitress seem to get a little laugh when I showed her the next one and refused to eat it. Even the manager when she said, "I don't know what happened, he's usually pretty good at that!".. had a good chuckle in her voice! I ordered huevos rancheros (as per the description in the menu, eggs are cooked over medium- perfect, sounded delicious. My son's food came first which is fine, we told him to get started. The waitress came back and said they made my husband's eggs over hard and it would be a couple of minutes, ok cool, glad they caught it before he did. They bring both of our plates and I'm ready to dig in since this was the first time ordering huevos rancheros there. Boy, did my excitement quickly come to an abrupt halt.. I make the first cut into my food only to discover my eggs are over hard.. No!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was so sad. By the time I could get the waitresses attention to show her my husband well into his meal. Food was acceptable. Our waitress not so much. Service was Bad Bad BAD. The waitress in fact, created an embarrassing scene this morning. It had been quite some time since we'd been to this restaurant, so I didn't know of any current specials. I'd ordered pancakes with fruit and the waitress asked if I wanted eggs and bacon. I told her no, because I still wasn't aware of it being a special and I figured I'd finish off my 4 year old's scraps, since either I or my husband normally ends up doing that when she fills up on the pancakes. After ordering, She walked away and I started digging through the laminated cards on the table and found out that I could've gotten a special with eggs and bacon. I figured it was a great deal... Wish I'd known a few minutes before. Some time passed. I didn't see the waitress for quite a while, but I wanted to make a simple change to my order. When the waitress finally came back, she and a male server had the food we had already ordered. I told her that I wasn't aware of the special and asked that the eggs and bacon be added, so I could have the special. I figured that it wouldn't be any trouble, since it was included. She seemed a little flustered and went to the kitchen to check if she could. She came back and said that since she brought the fruit it would be an extra $2 or $3.... anyway, I said ok and that was fine. It was less about the price at that time, more about the bacon and eggs. Then she went to the kitchen again. Then came back with added expenses. She said, "now this is where we have an issue" because I had been given three pancakes instead of two (in the special) she got louder as she was calculating all the extra cost it would be for me to get 'the special' which became a crazy a la carte breakfast and no longer a special at all. The patrons on the surrounding booths were all staring at the spectacle. I was so embarrassed. It all became overwhelmingly uncomfortable for me and my group. There was no need for her to get loud at all. It crosses my mind now, that she may have been making it more complicated in order to avoid simply adding bacon and eggs. At the time, I was thinking, 'Is this really happening?' I politely told her that I wasn't aware of the special until I found the yellow card with the specials listed on them (The card was hidden behind a larger card with pies on it). So, instead of apologizing for them not being in plain site while we ordered, or not telling us there was a special, she said, 'don't worry about it.' As if I was apologizing for not knowing of them in advance. I was pretty insulted at that point and told her to never mind, I told her there was no need to over complicate things and I'll just keep the order as it was. Any other place would've simply added the bacon and eggs and charged for the special. That's what Digger's would've done or even Denny's ! I wasn't even upset that I would've had to pay for the blueberry sauce/fruit on the side in addition to the special, but very loudly tallying up every single thing was totally uncalled for. Perhaps it was a HUGE inconvenience to her when I asked for a simple addition to our order. But if the specials had been properly displayed or communicated beforehand, this whole scene could've been avoided all together. She was polite with my husband and brother-in-law but I'm sorry, after I was treated the way I was and made a public spectacle, I probably will not be back. I've had better treatment at hole-in-the-wall places in the middle of nowhere. By the way, the couple in the booth next to us had previously sent their food back because it was cold. Since this morning, I've read the other bad reviews and have found I'm not the only one whose had this kind of experience. I will add also, that we normally go to Digger 's off of Willow Pass Road. We came here because Digger's had a longer wait than normal. This will be the last time I choose Buttercup over Digger's. They have THE BEST service in town! read more
