I was at Central Middle School in the seventh grade and in those 40 years nothing has changed, Their grinders are still nothing but deliciousness!!!! From their sandwiches to their potato salad, macaroni salad you name it. Do you want to eat healthier than fast food?? Do you want friendly down home treatment from employees? If customer service is key then buthces can't open the lock. The lady who took our order was semi rude, unpleasant & made it seem as if we were a bother & or just unhappy to be there working. We explained we just moved to riverside & were recommended to come to Butch's. She appeared to not care at all. We asked what would she recommend... it was like pulling teeth to get her to be helpful & friendly but we tried. Honestly her attitude killed my want to eat there but my gf wanted to absolutely try it still. She ordered BUTCHS ULTIMATE ITALIAN & I ordered the clam chowder soup. They say bad customer service can alter the taste of food & I think THEY are right. It was bland & missing pickles when the display advertised pickles come with. The clam chowder soup was super small and tasted like dehydrated soup u mix with hot water. Eh... for $25 bux I could have went some where with better customer service & maybe better food. I say better cuz that experience is based more on the employees bad attitude. Would I come here again? Maaaaaaaybe. Butch's is a Riverside institution. Their sandwiches and other food (salads, chili, etc. ) are consistently good and reasonably priced, which is why the place is swarming with city and county employees at lunchtime. Friendly people. I haven't been to this home town gem in decades but a friend of mine loved their grinders and we are having a birthday lunch for him there. I decided to scout out the seating arrangements and to talk with the manager, Jo. She was easy to talk with and I knew what I had wanted to order (I had read here she a no nonsense person that wants to get your order) I explained what we were planning to do next Sunday and how it was going to be paid for as well. She said no problem that they would work with us. She took my order of Tuna on Squaw bread. Jo explained they use mayo and all the other ingredients for that sandwich. She gave me a tab and told me to pay for my sandwich once it was done. She also gave me a few to go menus so folks had time to look it over before they came. Butch's grinders is a staple in Riverside. Centrally located downtown at the foothills of Mount Rubidoux. It's in a quaint building that used to be a gas station back in the day. Walking in you smell meats, veggies, dressings, all coming from the kitchen. You are greeted when you walk in and the line moves relatively fast. You might wait longer than most sandwich places but I guarantee you it's worth the wait. The bread is fresh each day, the meats are high-quality and all the veggies, crisp and ripe. Deplorable establishment. Smells like bleach when you enter. Asked the clerk if the potato salad was homemade and he lied to me. He told me it was. I know boxed potato salad because I used to work in a deli. When I got home I immediately knew it was boxed when I tasted it. Called back and they told me that they do serve boxed potato salad but they add a little "love" to it. I tasted no love whatsoever. Oh but they make it believable by putting a sliced pickle on top. I came in around 1pm to try out this sandwich shop that had great reviews on Yelp. When I first got there it was empty but by the time I left the place it was packed. The ladies at the counter were friendly as I told them it was my first time. She recommended the special and went over the menu with me. They have lots of selections of chips which is nice. You can get either the small or large on their cold or hot specialty sandwiches. They have all the fixings so you can make it the way you want it. They had various breads and cheeses to choose from. I have to say I was a bit overwhelmed at first since they have specialized sandwiches and you can create your own as well. If you create your own sandwich than they charge you $2 for each additional meat. I also had to get a kosher pickle and they can cut it up for you. It was so yummy with my sandwich. They also have coolers with all kinds of different drinks to choose from if you don't want a fountain soda. Overall, the service was awesome and the food was fresh and delicious. My wife and I finally tried Butch's today after it was recommended so many times to us by family members. (We are fairly new to Riverside). After reading the negative reviews about the rude lady at the counter I was a little nervous but I must say we did not have that experience. The sandwiches were really good. I ordered the brisket and my wife ordered the ultimate Italian. The bread was the softest I've ever had. We paid $30 even for the 2 large sandwich and 2 chips. The brisket was good, but that ultimate Italian was both our favorites, I had to go back in and get another to bring home for later. We came during a lunch rush so it was pretty busy and we waited a little while but it was worth it and inside was nice and cool bc of the AC and they had the music playing. Honestly not sure who everyone is talking about regarding the "rude old lady" but the lady in the "front counter picture" was really nice to me and everyone she helped. All in all, we will definitely be coming back when in the mood for a sandwich, which is often. If we have a different experience next time we visit, I will update this post. read more

Second time here. First time it was great. This time not so much. I ordered a HOT ham and cheese and my boyfriend ordered a HOT roast beef. Both our sandwiches came out cold. Instead of of giving us sandwiches like we ordered the person claiming to be in charge called the person who took our order and asked him in front of us what we ordered. That should not have happened. I even offered to pay for another sandwich made correctly until I found out that my boyfriend's sandwich was made incorrectly. When I asked to speak to a manager the guy said that there wasn't one and that he was the closest thing to it even though he hadn't been working there for long. Poor excuse. This place has been around for sometime because they are excellent at what they do. They have a good variety of grinders, sides (including homemade salads), and drinks (both fountain and bottled). The dining room was smaller, but we went a bit later in the afternoon and didn't have to wait very long. Customer service STINKS. Butchs Grinder has always had exceptional, taste and quality. It's great for an office party or just a quick lunch break. However, on my recent visit the service was sub par. The woman at the counter was so unhappy and difficult to deal with. I am literally giving you money for an overpriced (but tasty) sand-which. The least you can do is smile and treat your customers with respect and sincerity. If being rude and not wanting to deal with people is your thing, stay in the back.
