Delicious coffees and my favourite spot for breakfast or lunch. I would give 6 stars if it was possible.

The most exciting thing, I have to admit, were the discounted mini tarts at the end of the day - only €1.75 each! These would cost $6 or $7 each where I live in San Francisco, plus you can feel relatively guilt-free about buying a few as you're helping to avoid food waste! I bought three and especially liked the raspberry tart and the pear-raspberry. Had an oat milk flat white too (made with Ariosa coffee beans) and thought it was very good. The server was very friendly and helpful too. I'm also giving Hansel and Gretel Bakery & Patisserie 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: Good quality baked items made from fresh ingredients; Coffee beans are from local micro roaster, Ariosa, which has some direct trade and organic offerings; pantry items for sale that support progressive local food companies; Hansel and Gretel has run bake sales to support charitable causes; discounted items at the end of the day helps avoid food waste. Items for improvement: Would be nice to see some vegan items - pastry and cakes made with vegan butter such as Naturl'i (available at Dunnes Stores) is just as good as pastry made from butter. It would also be good to see some tables in or outside the café that would then allow them to use ceramic cups instead of disposable cups. More vegetarian and vegan savory items would be good too (it was close to the end of the say so perhaps hard to judge). I waited too long to review so some of the details escape me. Such as the appetizer we shared:…read moreConfit Pork Shoulder Croquettes, with quince puree, pickled shittake, and celeriac remoulade. The entrees were more memorable. I had the Fillet Of Irish Beef. I hardly ever order filet mignon but I'm glad I did. It may well be the best I've ever had. With Café de Paris butter, shallot pureé, pepper sauce, rocket (arugula), and a side of french fries. The flavor of the meat itself was incredible and the three sauces complemented it perfectly. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare as ordered. French fries aren't normally something to get excited about but these were a gastronomic masterpiece; the insides soft and sweet, not starchy, the outsides browned and subtly crisp, and I don't know what they were fried in but these had so much flavor it must have been beef tallow or duck fat. I'd come here again just to have a platter of these amazing fries! The wife's Coq Au Vin Façon La Maison (chicken breast braised in red wine, smoked bacon, mushrooms, baby onions, roast carrot, pomme purée) was equally memorable. I've never considering ordering this, thinking it too simple or plain. Not this. The red wine sauce really elevated a simple braised chicken. And how do they make even a simple carrot taste so good? We each had a wine from the ample selection of by the glass offerings and shared a gingery dessert which we both enjoyed. The service was good and not rushed. Just don't be intimidated by the waiter, who announced when he brought the bill that tip was not included; it seems this could have been handled more subtly.
