Buttered Toast is a cozy, chic bistro in the Algonquin/Crystal Lake area. Our waitress's was prompt, although she did disappear when we wanted our check. A simple flag down and someone else was able to help us. The food wasn't bad either. My Dad got a Breakfast with 2 Eggs, Ham and Pancakes. He said it wasn't anything remarkable, but wasn't bad. I enjoyed my Chilaquiles but the chips were rather soggy. It was pretty filling. Very limited coffee options. More staff is needed to have quicker service. We would come back if need-be. read more

I've been to Buttered Toast many times; mostly with friends or with my kids before a day of shopping (we used to always have brunch here on our school supply shopping day). This visit was with my mom and 17 year old daughter for a late breakfast before spending the day shopping. We arrived at around 10:30 and we were seated right away. Our waitress was super pleasant and attentive but not overly so. My daughter had the chocolate chip pancakes, my mom had an omelette and I had a kids turkey sandwich. I don't like to write a lot of reviews but I really have to commend this place. To preface everything, my family and I visit this restaurant often. I was there on Easter Sunday with my family enjoying my (delicious) meal when we heard some commotion at a nearby table. The commotion was coming from a server who seemed to be having some sort of informal meeting with upper management. The server was basically yelling at upper management and being very rude. I don't even think upper management was able to get a word in. Since I'm always here with family, I know one of the managers on a first name basis (Eric). Eric is such a kind and helpful employee. He was one of the individuals being yelled at by this server. I'm not sure the other managers name but she had dark hair. They did a great job handling the very uncomfortable situation. I felt so bad for both of them having to deal with this situation on top of a holiday weekend. Besides the managers handling this situation with such grace, everything else was awesome! I love this place! I visited with a friend for the first time on March 23. I ordered the chicken chilaquiles, which was delicious - great flavors, perfect spice and generously portioned. As good as the food was, the highlight for me was the fantastic latte art! After I told our server, Nate, about my quest for great latte art, a super talented employee named Joy presented me with the best latte art I've ever had -- an animal! It was truly impressive! I usually hate writing reviews, but I had to say something about this. I came in with my family on Easter and was given amazing service. The food was great and the employees were wonderful. However, we overheard upper management trying to scold an employee for some reason. She kept asking for an example and they couldn't even give her one. It seemed like they just wanted to let her go. Meanwhile, these two upper management people were taking all the labor hours on Easter but not setting a good example for their employees by actually working they were sitting the whole time, probably figuring out how to write her up or fire her. One of them was a girl with jet black hair, and she had another guy with her. The way they were treating this girl was disgusting. I've had bad management before and this set me off. I don't know what she did, but it's not always the employee's fault and the way they were going about it was completely unprofessional. I went up and told them how rude it was to be doing this on Easter, and they laughed straight in our faces. This place has no empathy for their employees. I'm glad we overheard this conversation coming from upper management because now we know. I really liked the food here and the employees, but just because of how upper management was treating her, it's a no go. We will not be returning because of specifically upper management. We came here for a weekend early brunch and although they were busy, we could see they were very well staffed and there was good turnover of tables. Our waitress was excellent even offering my parents extra strawberry lemonade to go. We all enjoyed our food including crispy chicken and pancakes, Denver omelette, and the special bacon Benedict dish. The portion sizes were good and we all finished our dishes! There are other breakfast places with larger portions if you want to be able to take food home but here they have quality made food. We stopped in for breakfast this morning. We were greeted friendly and seated promptly. Our server, Amanda came to the table right after to greet us, get drinks. Through out our visit our table was visited by several members of the team to refill water, coffee and remove plates.
