Expensive and bland. Those two words sum up our experience perfectly. My wife and I were excited to…read moretry a new spot for our date day. It seemed promising when we arrived because the space is very cute and clean, with lots of greenery. The umbrellas and piano make the space look unique and enticing. We were greeted warmly and seated quickly. We ordered the non-fried spring rolls as a starter. They were not good and I regretted my choice. They were wrapped sloppily and seemed to lack filling. It reminded me of a moist sock sliding off of a foot. The veggie filling had a nice flavor, but the damp draping roll wrap grossed me out. I wished I could just toss them in a deep fryer. We decided to share the coconut curry noodles with tofu, and the okra dish, and we both added one samosa on the side. The curry noodles were shockingly bland. I did not taste curry at all, only coconut. Not a speck of curry flavor. It was weird, because the noodles were yellow...my brain kept expecting flavor that never came. It screamed for salt, and there was none on the table. It also left a bland, chalky coating on your tongue. The tofu in the dish was not good. The pieces were cut all different sizes and it had a musty bitter flavor that I was not expecting. I couldn't even eat it. I was also surprised that the dish lacked vegetables...it was garnished with raw red onion, cilantro, and some horrible dry store-bought brand crunchy noodles. I was shocked by how much I hated that dish. The okra dish was a little better (it actually had some flavor) but it was very one-note and I would not call it good. The main flavor I got was smoked paprika, which was kinda nice but overpowering, as it tasted raw and needed to be cooked through more. The tiny potatoes were raw which was really not cool. There's not much I hate more than undercooked potatoes. The eggplant was also undercooked and spongy. The okra was ok. Even the rice was not good. It was mushy and came in a pathetically tiny portion served in a small cup that was barely half full. The samosas were probably the worst thing we had. I wouldn't even call it a samosa. It was a tiny greasy triangle of mostly dough. There was a single pea and a tiny smear of overly-salty potato filling. I was shocked at how bad they were. My wife didn't even finish hers even though it was tiny. It was that bad. Worse than the food was the stupid robot waiter. We had to push a gross (obviously smeared and dirty) button to make the robot go away after bringing our food. And we could tell that the waitress was also annoyed by it, as she had to walk it through the restaurant like it was a toddler taking its first steps. So dumb. This was the worst and most expensive lunch I have had EVER. It is rare that I try a new place and don't like anything I try. It was kind of shocking, actually. I will never be back.

A huge proportion of the menu is default vegan or can be ordered vegan, so we were spoiled for choice. We ordered: -Green Tea Lead Salad ($20) - spicy version -Ginger salad ($20) -Garlic noodles with tofu ($20) -Chickpea tofu curry ($23) -Stir-fried okra side dish ($8) Both salads were outstanding, with a wonderful array of crunchy textures, and great balance of sour and salty. The garlic noodles were a tad too salty, but otherwise tasty. The chickpea tofu curry was also fantastic, coming with a tomato-y sauce -- the tofu was firm and had wonderful texture. Service was a bit slow but friendly. Price level is pretty high compared to other Burmese spots in town. But the quality is there. Recommended.

Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup (2/5): At $15, this bowl was fairly disappointing. The menu photo showcases a much more generous protein portion, including two whole eggs and hearty chicken chunks, which was not what I actually received. Despite being described as a rich and creamy broth, the soup itself felt quite thin. On the positive side, the noodles had a great, satisfying chew, but their flavor profile leaned plain against the lighter broth. Logistics Tip: Located inside the Hawthorne Asylum food cart pod, dedicated on-site parking is scarce, but safe and accessible street parking can easily be found in nearly any direction in the surrounding area. Orders are assigned a buzzer pager, allowing you to wander the area while your food is prepared.

We were greeted by a friendly person at the front when we ordered our food and found a place outside to sit. They give you a number and bring your food to the table. I ordered the carrot salad and she ordered the vegan tofu curry and we both shared. The carrot salad was very tasty and umami flavor forward. I enjoyed the curry and it wasn't too spicy and came with a generous amount of Curry and Rice. The atmosphere is incredible - they've nailed that moody, low-lit lounge vibe without feeling pretentious. The food was equally impressive. The giant single dumpling wasn't my favorite dish of the night, but everything else more than made up for it. The pork ribs were outstanding - tender enough to fall right off the bone, with a sweeter flavor profile that worked really well. The noodles ended up being our favorite dish. They had just the right amount of spice with tons of flavor. Service was quick, no line and you order up the counter and they will bring your food out. They offer indoor seating and outdoor seating. The patio setup is especially great and feels like the perfect spot to spend a summer evening with friends. Overall, a fantastic addition to Mississippi Street.

Lots of menu options to choose from. Excellent service. They even gave one if those robot cat delivery vehicles to bring the food out to you. I felt well taken care of. The food itself was delicious with just enough spice to make it delicious but not overwhelming. If I had any criticism it would be the chai. It is complimentary but it's just too sweet. Not sure if they are adding sugar or using condensed milk? I'm glad I didn't pay extra for it. Burmese food has a lot of similarities to Indian food. We did get a side of paratha which was 4 triangular pieces and I thought it was a bit expensive at $8 for it. I would, in the future either go with just the rice or the paratha but not both. Parking is a bit different in this area of town. It's all street parking but with so many different restaurants in the area, you might have to park a few blocks away and walk. They have just as cute outdoor seating area too. I would come here again for sure.

They do have 2 locations and this one does not have the soup I was hoping to order (whoopsie!). -Lamb Curry (a current special) was hub's favorite. He likes lamb, I felt it was a little too gamey. It's served with a roti and that was fluffy and good. -Pineapple Salad (another current special) was our favorite as well. With cucumbers and a sweetness from the pineapple. A little spicy, but also refreshing. -Brisket Curry, the reason I saved Hat Yai was a bit underwhelming. It does pack some heat and comes with rice. It became a bit too heavy/much after a few bites, I found myself constantly going back to the pineapple salad to lighten my palate. The brisket also wasn't as soft as I was expecting, so I'm not sure I'd order again. *Drink: Pandan Gin & Tonic was good! Light pandan flavor and smooth. Would recommend if you like G&T and want to try a small twist. Restrooms available, fairly clean. Service was pretty quick.
