Longest line in Brooklyn for wack picked over threads
Fadda M.

Zero stars - you will wait 1 hr 45 min to buy a pair of socks. Selection is always picked over & wack. Store is always grossly understaffed. Possibly the worst place in Brooklyn. Photo is weekday morning - imagine on a weekend.

I feel bad for my wife…read more You probably do too for various reasons, but the one that's the most applicable right now is that I am virtually impossible to shop for. For someone with such simple taste in clothing, accessories, products and more, I am surprisingly particular. Well, it's a good thing this shop is here. They stock virtually everything a man might need from head to toe. Hats, scarves, gloves, coats, shirts, pants, boots, belts, ties, grooming products, candles, wallets, backpacks, jackets, graphic tees I would actually think about wearing (extremely rare), and more. And what's more? All of it is tasteful, stylish, and comfortable. The phrase "well-curated" was invented to describe this place. Even the music they are playing is well-curated. Plus, the people are nice, there's a tiny Bernie figurine overseeing the return policy, and the sign outside says it's time for bourbon and sweatpants. I agree, it is time for bourbon and sweatpants (even if it is like 9 am right now).

The café appears to have a very small food selection as well but I didn't order from it so don't take my word for it. The space doubles as a design gallery, with art pieces, home decor, etc. for sale. The emphasis on design is apparent before you even step inside. An old-time pushcart propping up a "Welcome" sign catches your eye from the street so you know you're in the right place, which was helpful because the shop is a bit off the beaten path (although not at all hard to find if armed with the address). The site seems to have been chosen specifically for its industrial feel, but there is no trace of coldness from what used to be a factory (and before that, about 100 years ago, a horse stable) The space has a kind of country farmhouse feel to it, with decorative scarves hanging from the brick walls and sponge-painted planks of wood decorating the front-of-house coffee bar. I talked to the manager (Fumio Tashiro, a very hospitable man), who said the café will change ownership in July, and an entirely new drink menu will be rolled out. He mentioned he will still be here, and I plan to come back then and make sure things haven't changed too much, as I really like it the way it is now!

I have a very deep affection for Save On Fifth. In the late 80's I lived in the area so Save on…read moreFifth was a frequent stop for me as I ran around the neighborhood. Back then, the draw for me was their toy section. I bought quite a few toys there over the years. One time I couldn't afford some toys so they actually let me put them on lay-away (I have no idea if they still do this). I recently visited again before meeting friends in the area for dinner and it was a good but slightly bittersweet visit. Save on Fifth is on a corner, so they have the advantage of having a wraparound window display that allows them to show off a huge variety of products and grab your attention (I personally think the art of the variety store window display is rapidly being lost, a sad commentary on the state of retail). Since it is currently Christmas season, the window was mostly full of toys and Christmas decorations. It looked great and I can imagine if I was say, 7 or 8 years old it would be visually captivating! Walk into the store and it's kind of like overstimulation. Every single nook and cranny of this store is jam packed with product. A kind gent greets you as you walk in in the same spot I recall a different gent greeting me when I was a kid. It was just cool to see the practice was still being upheld. He was very chatty and we got into a short conversation about traveling. I immediately gravitated to my old haunt, the toy section but this was the bittersweet part. They still have an extensive section and most kids will love it, but in terms of the types of action figures I collect they really had none. It's fine, times change and they DID have plenty of toys, just not the kind I would be interested in. The rest of the store however? Just as full of product as I remembered. Housewares? Check. Cleaning supplies? Check. Casio watches in a rotating display? Check! (no, really). They also had a good variety of items. For instance, they had almost half an aisle of just cleaning sprays. I was very impressed. Their prices are fair too. A spray bottle of Fantastik cost me $3.99 which is not too far from what Target would charge. Given the mom and pop nature of the store, I was more than happy to pay it and support keeping this wonderful shop in the neighborhood. Save on Fifth is a great store and I definitely recommend visiting!
