I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. Staff is friendly, but to my palette, the food was barely acceptable and reminiscent of the pre foil-wrapped burgers you get at a hospital or school cafeteria. Well a 'Billy Burger ' is a kid goat burger and boy oh boy it tasted good. At first I was a little skeptical about eating goat but then I remembered back to the Billy Goats Gruff story from my childhood and this settled my mind as I knew they'd be nice and tender from running from trolls all day. Hope at least someone gets that reference. Anyway, the kid goat burger was amazing, cooked right in front of me and slightly on the rare side. The burger was garnished with tzatziki, cheddar cheese, pickled carrot and pickled cabbage. It truly was a taste sensation. I chatted to the guys running the Broughgammon farm stall and they said they are regulars at Farmers Markets all over Northern Ireland as well as having an on site farm shop in Ballycastle, Ballymena and Coleraine. They only use the finest produce and all their livestock is free range which makes it extra tasty. There's a great story about the history of the farm on their website - well worth a read. The stall itself was excellent, quick service and really friendly staff - definitely worth a visit if you're at St Georges Market. When local produce is cooked street style and it still tastes like gourmet food you know the ingredients are top notch and this is the case with Broughgammon Farm's goods.

This particular stand is stationed behind The Kingspan stadium (Revenhill) and the queues (pictured) tell their own story. Trust me it's worth the wait. The selection of burgers is excellent (for a van). Try the bacon and cheese legend. Simple but effective. They do fries too but if you're going to queue up you'd be crazy not to get a real Irish burger. Hard to pick any faults with this van or company other than the mile long queue, but sure at a sports match you pick the stall with the biggest queue anyway.

The burgers are quite dry, they're extremely messy, which isn't a great thing if you're trying not to spill it all over yourself, the redeemer is the crack sauce which is pretty great. The fries are strange, they're the same quality as you would get from a good chip shop, but I don't think they goes very well with the whole American restaurant aesthetic they're going for. This place has been hyped up loads in the media and online so I was really excited to try their grub. Yesterday Belfast was absolutely hiving so it probably wasn't the best idea to pop in to Five Guys at 1pm. This may have slightly tainted my experience. On entrance a staff member handed us a paper menu and ushered us towards the counter to order, the queues were huge but the staff coped admirably working their way through the line. The ordering system is straight forward. Order at the till, you're given a number and then you wait at the service area to grab your order. This seemed to confuse people and rather than line up and wait for their food everyone huddled together in a semi circle around the guy handing the brown bags out. Once you get your food you then have the choice either to take out or eat in. The only problem with eating in is there is nowhere near enough space to sit in. Yesterday every table was occupied and as the seconds ticked by our food got colder and colder - a real pet hate of mine. We eventually sat down at a booth beside other diners. The food itself was OK, nothing special. I ordered a burger with Jalepenos but these were completely devoid of flavour adding nothing but extra crunch to the burger. The burger patty was nice but not out of this world. The major bonus were the chips. They were 'real' and you could tell they had been freshly prepared in house. The price is what will get you! £21 for 2 meals and I didn't even have a drink!? To me that seems extortionate, especially when you can't get a seat to sit down and eat your meal. In my opinion there's plenty of local places in Belfast doing better food than Five Guys without the pomp and ceremony so why not spend £20 there?
