Burger7 - Super messy, super tasty takeout chilli cheese dog!

When it comes to good old American style grub, I love a hot dog. More specifically I love a chilli…read morecheese dog, and that's where my problems begin. You see, I've found it ridiculously hard to find a chilli cheese dog in Glasgow that has blown me away. The chilli is too hot or not hot enough, the cheese isn't melted or there just isn't enough of it, the hot dog is of a pretty poor quality... the list goes on. Finally my quest is over. Burger7 have been crowned my hot dog knights in shiny tin-foil armour. Burger7 have been on mine and Craig S's "Top 5 to Try" list for a wee while now so when the mood struck us for some USA dining we decided to take a wee drive out. I found a local postcode and placed a justeat collection order so it would be ready for us arriving. (I won't go into the saga that we thought we were ordering from the Coatbridge restaurant and ended up ordering from the Airdrie restaurant by accident!) I had ordered my chilli cheese dog, some gravy fries and a side of mac and cheese (always!!!) and couldn't wait to tuck in when we got home. First, the gravy fries. It is not your average chips and gravy. The gravy was thin, homemade and sweet, with a tomato-y tang to it. It tasted delicious and went well with the perfectly cooked fries. The portion was absolutely huge too so I was quite happy to share when my little one and hubby decided they wanted to try them too. The mac and cheese was really creamy and well seasoned, with a lovely hint of sharpness. I'm crazy about mac and cheese and this was some pretty good mac. The portion size was just about right, but again my wee one had decided that this looked pretty tasty too and helped me eat it. Now, I know you want to hear about that hot dog. As it was foil wrapped for our journey home it was a mess... a beautiful one at that. The bratwurst was juicy and flavoursome without being watery or greasy. It was also huge and outsized it's bun. The chilli wasn't too chunky, had a nice kick of heat to it without being overpowering. And it was just covered in melty sharp cheese. Everything tasted great on its own. Together, it was pure bliss. I've been searching high and low for that hot dog and now I've found it you can guarantee it'll be a regular part of my life now.

I have a hunting dog-style mentality to carnivorous pursuits so have no problem with gristle, shell or other yuck. I even eat the crispy bits at the end of prawns and sometimes the eyeball if I'm in the mood. For a tenner though, a burger and what must be the measliest, stingiest portion of fries I've ever seen, just does not cut it. I must point out that there was nothing at all else on the plate. No onion rings, no salad, and it just look very miserly. The burger itself was actually quite tasty, but I just felt a bit robbed.

I'm glad I visited so I can say I've been and can confirm that it doesn't have a patch on TGI's, in actual fact, I think I prefer McDonalds. I wasn't feeling all that adventurous so I decided to go for a regular ol' cheeseburger. When it came out I was a little disappointed with the measly portion. The chips were tasty and the burger was pretty good for the first couple of bites, then it happened. There's nothing, I mean nothing worse than biting into a burger and biting into a piece of grizzle... even thinking about it right now makes me squirm. Throwing all my tables manners out of the window I had to spit out the grizzly lump of burger onto my napkin. I felt disgusting doing it but it was either that or I would have been sick everywhere. I was still starving so decided to try a bit more, surely there would only be one piece of grizzle? I was wrong, I bit right into another one. Yuck. In hindsight, I probably should have just asked for another burger but after working in restaurants part time during my school years I'll never forget an ex manager who would wipe his sweaty arse round the rims of plates of people who complained about the food. It's really put me off ever complaining about food, better the devil you know, I guess. I was really disappointed with my experience to Frankie and Bennys. The food was on the pricey side for the quality and while I know it's not exactly gourmet dining I would have probably got something nicer in McDonalds. The saving grace was the waiter who was very friendly and smiley I just didn't want to complain and watch his smile turn into a frown.

    Crumbs - Roadside charm

While driving out to Stirling with my dad the other day, we stumbled onto this charming little…read moreroadside eatery in Bonnybridge. We were only looking for a coffee, but I was surprised to see some nice looking food on offer. Crumbs is located in a quiet little retail strip and it didn't look like too many people were passing through, but as we sat down and observed the flow of their business, I realised I couldn't be more wrong; they seem to do a very healthy trade with the local builders and road workers for filled rolls and such...the stream of people coming in for their takeaway breakfasts and lunches never stopped! They clearly have a reputation in the area for food that's good and fast, but they also had a pretty impressive selection of actual home-cooked food for the sit-down lunch crowd (only two tables in Crumbs, but great for people-watching!!). I saw some gorgeous homestyle mac and cheese, some sort of toad-in-the-hole type of dish, and various fillings for jacket potatoes, all of which looked quite appetising. One of the things I love most when travelling is finding funky out of the way places like Crumbs where they're serving up "real food that's real good" and the ladies running the place are a bit cheeky with everyone - especially the regulars. It reminds me of all the road trips I've taken through the western half of the US, where places with extra helpings of character aren't hard to find. I don't know when I'll be passing though Bonnybridge next, but I'll definitely make a point to come hungry so I can stop at Crumbs for more than just coffee.
