Hadn't been back to this place for 2 years since I moved down to the city. On my way to Alberta I had stopped in Kamloops and the one place I remembered very clearly and was so special to me while living in the city was Burger Cafe Joy. Nothing has changed and still doesn't disappoint. Every burger is top notch and very delicious! My favorite combo is always going to be a matcha tea with Yakisoba and Katsu burger. (yes I always eat 2 burgers lol) This place will never disappoint and remain one of my favorite places to get Japanese burgers. They are unique and one of a kind in all ways. After reading a few reviews, good and bad, I decided to check Joy out. I was not disappointed. I ordered the teriyaki with cheese and after reading a tip from another reviewer about the seaweed salad, placed an order for that too. I started with the salad. It was very flavourful so I took my time. Then the burger. It was... Different. Thinly crafted Patty, Perfectly spiced. Quite delicious. Overall, I enjoyed my meal. But be warned: if you were looking for a North American burger experience, you will be disappointed. These are not big fat greasy, flame-broiled, messy burgers. I actually felt satisfied after eating it rather than bloated and regretful. I enjoyed it for its flavour and not for its girth. read more

Tucked inside Sahali mall is this little cafe. I decided to give it a try this Sunday afternoon. The store had been in this location for the past 3 years. I ordered the teriyaki cheeseburger without any sides. The store is operated by Japanese people. Background: I'm originally from Vancouver so I have had many Japadogs. I'm using japadogs as a comparison since it is relatively the same style, except it is burgers here instead of hotdogs. Service: Great! All I ordered is the burger and the server offered me water and WiFi password. She also promptly check up on me and refilled my water. I was also given a biscuit and a sour key for snack. I was also offered a stamp card where I can receive a free burger after 5th stamp. Ambiance: The space is small. Decor is minimal but cute. There are about 5 tables in the store. There is also a message board that displays other interesting eateries in Kamloops. Overall cozy. Cleanliness: The space is very clean space. Price: the teriyaki cheeseburger is priced at $5.95. Taste: the burger was dressed with lots of teryaki sauce and some jap mayo. The cheese is unfortunately like a kraft individual cheese. The patty is thinner than I expected. The lettuce is crunchy. The bun is a standard, mediocre bun (cold). The patty's taste is masked by the teriyaki sauce so I can't really comment on it. The teriyaki sauce tastes like any other store bought teriyaki sauce. I find the teriyaki sauce too salty and masked too much of the burger taste. I was expecting something more special in sauce and toppings. Lettuce alone seems bland. Portion: Small. I'm a 110 lbs girl and I usually can't finish a burger. I finished the burger in record time and went home to eat more. Overall: after my first brush with this cafe, I would give it a 3.5, but will likely come back here again because they are so friendly and it is rare something this special is in Kamloops. read more

Although I didn't grab any food myself, this is my boyfriend's favourite restaurant and they definitely didn't disappoint. He ordered the teriyaki cheeseburger and fries, and the burger looked wonderful when it came out - they put a lot of effort into their food. Burger & Cafe Joy is tucked into the middle of the Sahali Mall. Unless I'm in the area, I often forget it's there which is a terrible thing because it's so good! This isn't the kind of place you expect to find in a place like Kamloops. As others have mentioned, it is similar to Japadog in Vancouver without the cult following. The food here is fantastic. This is my favourite place to go when I need a fast-food fix. The teriyaki tofu burger is probably the best vegetarian burger in town. The tofu is coated in a sweet teriyaki marinade, lightly fried, and left deliciously soft on the inside. It really melts in your mouth. Yum! The homemade french fries crisp and delicious and the various homemade treats? Heavenly! Definitely try their green tea roll cake. As for the service? Fantastic. Everyone I've spoken with her is sweet and friendly. They definitely know how to run a successful business. Hopefully the loss of Target in the mall hasn't hurt them too much. A sweet little restaurant with a definite feel of small-town Japan and mom and pop restaurant. Cashier spoke Japanese which I appreciate when I go to a Japanese restaurant The mall, sadly needs more visits as many businesses have left. Still a Safeway and a liquor store and esthetician for nails was open at the mall. We were glad to support this business Upon reading all the reviews, we chose the teriyaki burger, the yakisoba burger and the Macha tea. The burgers came wrapped in a well-presented waxed paper on rectangular plates that would double for sushi dishes-nice!. While the white bread buns were puffy and soft, they weren't my favourite as I prefer a hearty bun when I choose to eat carbs. The beef patties were simple but flavourful, and the soba was yummy and hot--probably reheated in the microwave Matcha seemed to come from a package, but had an authentic taste and nice fluffiness to the foam- in a ceramic cup which I appreciate. Options for bottled Japanese drinks were there, but just not my taste, but a great place to get memories of Japan. I hope the business can weather the mall's quiet period read more

Just tried this place for the first time. I ordered the original teriyaki beef burger with lettuce. As an Asian I was fully satisfied with the flavours of the teriyaki sauce, it was sweet and delicious. The soft bun and mayo made it even better. For around $5.40 I think it's the best value you can get for flavour. read more

Having a place like this in Kamloops always blows my mind. A truly unique joint with fantastic Japanese burgers. Everything is so well prepared and presented, and they have the softest, fluffiest buns, and there are so many burgers to choose from! This place was interesting! Tucked into a mall, it was a surprise when we walked it. It's Asian burgers and absolutely delicious. I had a teriyaki chicken burger which was super thin chicken, in a light crispy tempura batter. Drizzled with teriyaki sauce and topped with lettuce and cabbage, the burger was super light and very tasty. Husband had the sole filet burger topped with lettuce and tomato. After one of my usual weekly, OKAY daily trips around Target, I decided to stop into the quaint and cosy Japanese-fusion burger joint and was not disappointed. For the peanuts (so cheap!) that you pay, you get one heck of a burger. The daikon burger and avocado burger is my favorite. They nail the Japanese-fusion taste on the head. The one drawback is the fries - out of the packet and pairs badly with the burger. Room for improvement, but make room in your belly to try it out asap. read more

It may be easy to overlook this small little restaurant, but I really hope you don't. It's quaint, and I think puts an interesting spin on a traditional burger. This spin being a more Japanese approach to things. The burgers come slathered in teriyaki sauce (sometimes a bit too much of it), or with other Japanese influences such as daikon lettuce. The service is very good, friendly staff - but there always seems to be a bit of a wait when I go, even when we're the only customers in the store. Was driving through Kamloops and decided to skip all the chain outlets. Yelp lead us to this small but super friendly restaurant tucked away in the middle of a sparse mall.....it was more than worth the effort to find them. Amazingly delicious burgers and sides. The wife had the spring rolls which were absolutely perfect. Light, crispy and oh so flavourful! I wanted to eat her order and get another. The staff are warm and welcoming and you can tell that they truly appreciate your business. it will be a must stop every time I am running through Kamloops.
