Busy diner right on the highway. Parking is a bit of a pain sometimes in the summer. They have a big menu of burgers, diner classics, and hearty grease. The staff are lovely and the food is yummy. So many mosquitos inside the restaurant. People including ourselves were smacking them left and right. I think we killed about six mosquitoes just sitting there and got bit a bunch. While the burger was fine, the kale cesar salad was near tasteless and very small for the price. Their house made Cesar dressing tasted like mayo or cream, no lemon/garlic/anchovy/Parmesan/etc. The French onion soup was so packed with bread, it was more like a savory bread pudding than soup. HIDDEN GEM ! Make sure you stop by and try any of the food the menu has to offer. We started with the 2 for $9 appetizers - the one we chose was called Le PrawnJames. (2) Amazing coconut crusted shrimp in a fresh corn tortillas.(literally had to be talked out of ordering 4 more orders and bypassing entrees.) For dinner we each had burgers, I forgot to take any pictures so the one they posted a few days ago on their Facebook will just HAVE to do. My boyfriend had the Axe burger which was delicious and I had the Krabby Patty Po Boy which was absolutely fantastic. We both had different sides and they were out of bounds. He ordered a side Vladimir poutine and you could tell their gravy was homemade. I had the Thai one on salad and that was the best salad I've ever had...I ordered a full sized one for myself to have for lunch the next day. The menu here is unique, a combination that ranges wildly from healthy vegan options ranging to gut buster pulled pork topped with fried everything. The poutine offers a vegetarian option (even on the cheese- milk free) it's good but imo the 'hunter' poutine in GREAT The gravy is delicious, it's the real thing, not stuff out of a pouch, this place knows how to make sauces and gravies!! The pulled pork and bbq sauce is divine, coleslaw total recommendation cuz it's saucy too The hamburgers start out pretty normal and then start stacking up into impossible other dimension creations. Spicy can be a factor and this menu is a good one for the hungry They also have a range of 2 for 1 appys, tacos, special brunch menus and other specials. There's a pretty big section of salads but it's not usually the sort of place I go for a salad even though they look really good. The nachos are massive and def worth the 5 stars alone, they are also delicious and I took Home the leftovers and ate them for 5 days!! The portions are fairly large in general, I almost always have a bit to take home. One thing I'd improve is that the alcoholic drink menu is massive, but virgin drinks are a bit light in variety. We've eaten at the Small Axe a couple of times over the past year and love it. We're both plant-based and there are tons of great, delicious options here. We really enjoy the poutine and tacos. Cocktails are excellent quality too and wine by the bottle is really reasonable. We're cyclists, so after a good ride in the area (which is gorgeous for cycling) we love to pop in here for a bite and some cold drinks. Given it's winter now, we'll be popping in after a cross country ski at nearby Larch Hills for a hot meal and some apres! read more
