As far as first impressions go, Bulk Barn is right on par with nearby College subway station: The floors look nasty and after seeing a diversity of flies (big, small and fruit) in the dried fruit section I was completely turned off! And I don't mean flying around the bins in the air (although there was definitely some of that) but I'm talking trapped inside the bins WITH the food...eating, pooping, fornicating and doing whatever else flies do when they get together...yikes! It took me about 30 seconds of walking around to notice this, maybe their manager needs an eye exam? And isn't it about time Bulk Barn invested in technology to avoid people dipping there disease infested hands into the bins? I don't find prices that good either & have had some bad experience with freshness of their nuts! I'll stick with Costco / Kirkland brand any day! read more

LACK OF PRODUCTS: The Bulk Barn website lists many products, many of which are actually not carried in any particular store -- they told me to contact each store location and enquire as to whether the items I wanted were in stock -- in this location, about ten things not available. AVOID: During busy times, there is a very long line-up for the cashier -- be prepared to wait if you pop in when it's busy. The staff have always been nice and polite but I try to be nice to them -- I've no doubt they have to deal with lots of awful customers. read more

This past Saturday Bulk Barn opened it's doors in the heart of downtown. This is a most welcomed addition to the neighbourhood as us urbanites can now get our bulky needs fulfilled much easier. The physical location is great with easy access to the subway and the new MLG Loblaws is a block away so you can get all your grocery shopping done in one trip. There's nothing different about this store over any other Bulk Barn, it's just shiny and new. Welcome to the neighbourhood! read more

I went back to Bulk Barn today after boycotting them for a few years because some peanuts I bought there were contaminated with what I believe was isopropanol (rubbing alcohol). They refunded the money but it shows you the danger of buying unprotected food. When I went back today I was shocked at the prices and the low quality of food. Look at the chocolate and you can see it is all stale. And over $16.00 per pound which is about $35.00 per kilo. Haha the joke is on anyone buying this. They are fooling people into thinking bulk food is cheap but grocery stores are way cheaper and better quality. read more

This is a new bulk barn and is thankfully easily accessible by subway. The store is a decent size with aisles and aisles of items than one can buy. The aisles though tight are very clean (+1 in my opinion as other Bulk Barns I have visited are not this clean) Staff is helpful and will help you out if asked and will get the info you require if they don't know the answer. Prices are a bit on the higher side but hey you buy only the quantity you need here and they are offering you economies of scope rather than economies of scale here. Some odd stuff is also available here like pie fillings ?! A good spot to buy items that one doesn't need in bulk :) read more

Endless bins of edibles, unlimited portion control, and pricing by weight. What's not to love? There is no place with a wider variety of goods. It's mere footsteps between chocolate covered espresso beans and handfuls of ground millet. You need nut butters? They have nut butters. Five different kinds of raisins? Of course. They have everything: bird seed, baking ingredients, candy, drink mixes, beans, and nuts galore. You need, they got it, bub. And get this: you no longer have to write numbers on those little paper tags. The staff have *memorized* all the products and their SKUs. I am picturing the Ludovico treatment (still pictures of bulk goods, Beethoven, eye drops and shock therapy), though the training process is probably something more humane. On ambiguous items, like chocolate covered what-have-yous, I try to make a little mental note of the code. This inevitably impresses the cashier, which makes me feel like a Big Man. "Wow," they might say. Or even, "thanks." I then carry on with my sad, sad life. (sung: Bulk Barn!) Obligatory Title Pun: Get the inside SCOOP. Menu Readability: Don Watt-esque. Oooh, Bulk Barn. My sweet sugary nemesis. Rows and rows of tidy bins, full of handsome offerings. Seasonal candies, sweet tarts, chocolate covered bits and bits if tasty things, and colorful saccharin goodies abound, with me, traipsing dewy eyed through the aisles. I can have whatever I want, and my Mom will never know! However, my dentist will. And so will those jeans that don't fit. However, love/hate relations aside, this is a great place for all sorts of finds. Coming down from the sugar high, one will find every bakers delight, nut hungry squirrel's envy, and even enough to please the cleanest of eaters. All this, within neatly organized confines, reasonable prices, and efficient staff. Even a solid health food section is available here. Fantastic. The only way I could love this place more is if I had a little restraint. I'll make a note to get on that. read more

Bulk Barn was once only a store in weird strip malls in the suburbs, but not anymore! Very handy location at College and Yonge, and the store is always very clean and organized. I have been to other locations of Bulk Barn that were a mess. The one thing I have noticed about Bulk Barn is that it is perfect if you want to buy a tiny amount of something, whether it is candy, spices, nuts, flour, etc. But if you buy more than a package worth, you would be better off buying it at a grocery store, I noticed this especially with spices (a resealable bag of thyme at Loblaws was cheaper per gram) and candy... you would think those bulk Oh Henry pieces would be cheaper, but you are better off buying some Oh Henry bars at the grocery store, or even better at Dollarama. If you are a fan of ju-jubes, buy them here, you will be shocked at how fresh they are here, because they are such a popular item they never sit around and get stale and hard. The other great thing about this location is that I have never waited in line, there are always enough cashiers. read more

It's great having a Bulk Barn right downtown; I've missed having one nearby since I moved. This is a smaller (and I mean cramped) Bulk Barn with not as much selection as the ones further out of the city and beyond. It is for the most part clean, and hot-ticket items like candy cycle through pretty quickly so it doesn't get too stale, but I've had some bad natural almonds at this location. The huge lineups are rarer now that the novelty of a new store has worn off. There's no real place to line up per se, except in the last aisle with all the baking chocolate, which is what the staff encourage. A couple of tips: If there are red twist-ties around the items you want, don't write the number down. If there are big white tags, write the number on them (not just the name). A lot of those items look similar, like the different types of flour or powdered items. It will save you time at the checkout when the cashier is scrolling through their item code wheel. If the candy you want is all the same price, you can mix them in one bag. Go to the spice section first and stock up on small bags if you're getting candy or snacks. The regular bags are HUGE and you don't realize how much you're actually getting. If it seems more expensive than buying it pre-packaged, you probably just got too much. read more

I walked by Bulk Barn about 50 times before I ever explored the store. The trick is to get past the glowing neon candies that line the front of the store and move inwards. After that you'll find all sorts of great foods in bulk at reasonable prices. Some of my favorites include: --Grains and friends: multiple types of quinoa, lentils, barleys, couscous, etc. I found almost every kind of grain I wanted except farro. --Nuts: whole, sliced, shelled, roasted, unroasted varieties of every moderately common nut. --Cereals, pastas, other pre-pprepared bulk products --Lots of cake and cookie decorating supplies. --Spices: when you know that you don't need an entire jar of star anise to make the one recipe that you'll use it in that year. --Vanilla beans ($5 for 2) are hidden up at the counter. I generally completely skip the candy aisle. The stores are clean and well-lit and the staff are very helpful and friendly. A TIP: Look online for coupons. Also Wednesday's, students and seniors save 10%. Now, I just wish they would start stocking dried mushrooms. read more

I recently visited the store and I'm very disappointed in the poor customer service. When I approached the cash to pay for my items there was no line so I stood behind an individual who was just about to finish. The store is small and busy so there is no indication of where to wait. While, I was waiting a group of people came and stood off to the other side. After the person finished I went to pay as it was my turn, but the cashier was rude and told me that the line was on the other side. I informed her that I was here waiting before any line formed. She was very rude and snapped "well next time make sure you get in line." She publicly attempted to shame me for skipping the line when I was there before any other person waiting my turn. Make the line system clear!!! Also, very slow at checking people out as well. read more

Came by here today just to stock up on some quick rolled oats and had a walk around the store. Now that I tend to go on the healthier side of things, Bulk Barn isn't just for candy binges anymore. I did have to ask someone where to find Brown Rice Syrup, and they only had one kind at about $6.50 a bottle, so I passed. Beyond that, this store has the usual staples that I've seen elsewhere. I can't vouch for the prices being higher than the store closest to my home (we know that price hike is inevitable when you live an hour and change out of the city), but my oats were cheap, as usual. The lineup issue is still happening but the cashiers are fast enough that you don't really notice it much. Super convenient location, will be back. read more

Yes yes yes! Bulk Barn has finally arrived in the city!!!! Despite its yucky reputation, for those that don't know... Big bins of food accessible to everyone, with or without clean hands.... Yes there are scoops. But like public transit, not everyone follows the rules.... I got a array of delicious cholocate goodies to make my holiday tree bark, it was a one stop shop for me and I loved it!! Good quality chocolate at a fraction of the price, who could ask for more!!! Love: -Bins of bulk items as far as the eye can see. Chocolate, sweets, sprinkles, nuts, sugar, flours, spices... I think they have everything. Nut butters, jams, cheeses and baking powder/flours are at the back. -It's so convenient to get just as much as I want Like: -They also have a range of baking tins and decorating supplies -They have sales and coupons! Dislike: -It's not like you make a huge saving really Hate: -The lines are often crazy long. There are only three checkouts and the cashiers are super super slow. Leave all your emails unanswered so you can play on your phone while you're waiting. The one star is for the selection. There is a wide selection, but I will plan to never step foot in this or any Bulk Barn location for one reason: The poorly trained/disciplined staff! The staff is young, immature and plain old rude, as several other reviewers have pointed out. Two of them were chatting, having a personal conversation when I asked one of them a question. Yet without even looking at me, she simply muttered "no" and proceeded to blatantly listen in to another customer's conversation with another staff member, essentially passive-aggressively letting me know that she had answered my question and was now focusing her attention elsewhere. Then as I was going to purchase my things, there was NO clearly defined process for lining up, so I stood behind a man who was standing in an aisle waiting for a register to open up. Two opened up and he went to one, but the staff member at the other closed her register and told me "the line is over there sir" and pointed to the opposite end of the cash register counter where some woman had JUST stepped up to, after I had been standing behind another guy they gave no flack to who was now being rung up. She then proceeded to check out the woman who had just walked into the line, thinking I would just obediently step to the end of this newly created line after they saw me waiting in line that whole time behind another guy who they gave no flack to without saying anything to either of us (but allowing him to do it). EEK, Me Thinks Not. I will not be made a fool of like that. I put my stuff on the counter and told them I wasn't buying anything from here. Shopping here felt like being in a high school. The all-female, young staff was just chatting and were very, very rude the whole time. Between being blatantly blown off when asking a question and then the line stunt one of them tried to pull, it is clear that this staff is POORLY trained and non-disciplined. The corporate management clearly does not have a system in place to properly teach their workers how to manage a store or treat customers and it is hurting their business. i will never step foot in any BB location because of it, giving a big business my money despite the fact that they clearly don't give a __ about how they treat me or their customers. No one should ever walk out of your business feeling disrespected, slighted or humiliated. read more

CANDY!!!! I love the candy from here, it's always fresh and I appreciate that they keep the scoops out of the bins (so you aren't getting someone's hand basically all over the candy). One time I absent-mindingly went to use a scoop from one kind of candy for another, and an employee scolded me politely - shows that they're paying attention and that they care. Practically every week they have a printable coupon for $3 off a purchase of $10 on bulkbarn.ca - so check the website before you go shopping. The only downfall I see is the line-up system is kind of confusing for newbies - it'd be nice if they had a sign directing everyone where to line-up so you don't have to take matters in your own hands. read more

I went at 2pm and there was a LONG lineup! Like 20 people long. So you if you are popping by on a lunch break, or are just stopping in to grab a thing or two, check the line up situation before starting to shop! The prices here are good, but I mostly find the good deals are on spices. They have really good prices on spices, especially when you only need a little. Instead of buying a $5 bottle, you can spend 30 cents-75 cents on a small bag. (But then you need to supply your own bottle.) The prices on most other things that I compared it to are about average. I can get cheaper prices in Kensington on a lot of items. What Bulk Barn does have, however, is a really big selection. And a downtown location. All in all, not my #1 bulk store of all time, but a good one to add to the rotation. (And YES, for all concerned, they DO have sour gum balls aka tear jerkers. They make my teeth hurt, but my heart sing!) read more

This place is great. Lots of selection, it's always clean and tidy. I've been a handful of times and each time the bins are full and fresh looking. It's tough to resist because everything is so cheap. The check out is super efficient, the only time I was trying to check out with a few other people, two or three other cashiers came at once and I didn't have to wait at all. read more

I really only use this place for random candy missions on my way home from work when making the transit transfer from subway to streetcar (so perhaps not having the temptation of buying candy would be better after all), but I can't help but think this is a good addition to the area. The actual space itself is pretty tight, but they did a good job of squeezing everything in. There is usually a pretty long line up that files down the one aisle at the side of the building, but the staff get the people through at a decent rate. On my last visit, even just being a Thursday evening they had 4 cashiers working which is good as there is nothing more depressing than standing in a long line that moves so slow and you can't even see the cashier to know how truly close you are. While I'm happy that I bought an overwhelmingly large bag of easter candy for just $5 yesterday, this place still only gets 3 stars as its just another Bulk Barn. read more

This store is clean, organized, very well stocked, has a huge selection, and has friendly staff. They sell a wide variety of candy, trail mix, nuts, baking products, etc, etc, etc. At the back they even have bulk "butters" (peanut, almond, etc), pie fillings, etc. The prices are competitive but this does not mean they are bargain-basement. It's easy to spend over $20 on a bag of chocolate almonds and a couple bags of trail mix! Trust me. read more

I'm paleo, which means I don't eat crap, no candy, no chips, none of that crap, I treat myself with raw nuts, but you think I can find friggin nuts of any sort at bulk barn that isn't covered in some kind of oil?! Not a chance! It's astonishing actually, even the nuts that are listed as "raw" are not raw, EVERY SINGLE ONE has SOMETHING on it! Ridiculous. Bulk barn is great for their nut butters in bulk and assortments of spices, and all the other crap people generally go there for, but if you're like me and expect that your raw nuts actually e raw then don't waste your time, you won't find any. Bulk barn is overpriced and mis-advertises as far as I'm concerned. Very very frustrating!!! read more

Not quite sure why these guys are known as Kohinoor Foods now. Not my business. The only reason I'm here is bc our Leslie St location closed & I have an old gift card. I'm surprised these types of stores are still relevant with all the germophobe a out there. I spotted a homeless fellow filling up an empty margarine container with nuts, then put it in his bag. I'm not judging but have seen him around this area for years. Maybe if the staff stopped yacking here long enough, they'd have noticed. Found the store a bit messy as well & ended up buying some packaged falafel mix just to be safe. read more

The Bulk Barn located at 4 Carlton is across the street from my Yonge & College office where I have been for 30 years. The neighbourhood finally had Bulk Barn as a good neighbour. I have shopped there 4 to 5 times per week and enjoyed the smiling and friendly faces of those who work there. It gave s sense of community to me there. A few weeks ago on a Thursday night, that all changed for me. I was waiting patiently in the line up at the west wall close to the cashiers. to pay for my purchases of the day. As the customer at the furthest cashier from the line up left, I realized it was my turn to weigh out and pay. I walked from the line up as it was my turn to check out and pay. I was confronted by the young part time girl at the cash check out and was asked if I had been in the line up waiting or perhaps I jumped the line and butted in without waiting. I replied that I had been waiting in that line up for my turn and yes had followed protocol. That wasn't good enough for her. She accused me 4 more times at that time of not waiting my turn. Asking why she was asking me repeatedly, she replied that they are required to ask each and every customer that question. I had never been asked that ever in all the times I had shopped there, and that number of visits there was significant, given 4-5 times per week times a few years. Remarking to her that I would looking into her "policy reference" subsequent to that visit, she stated I should go ahead. It didn't matter to her. I felt very upset and insulted, not to mention accused. I no longer will shop at Bulk Barn. I will patronize alternative businesses instead even though the selection can't be beat. I will miss shopping there in the future and wish the manager and the rest of the staff there all the best. They on the other hand are quite friendly and helpful & nice people. Its a darn shame that one really miserable and confrontaional employee can have so much Power? Maybe since I will be buying less chocolate, my waist will get smaller. LOL read more

I've been shopping here off and on since they opened last year. Staff are friendly, the bins are tidy and I love that all bins have their own scoopers so you don't have to worry about cross contamination. (for us food allergy peeps!) The store is clean and well stocked. read more

Even though there's a much closer Bulk Barn to where I live, I find myself coming back to this location time and time again. They've got a great selection of snacks, candy, cooking ingredients, vitamins and other various things at prices that can't be beat. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful when I just can't seem to find whatever it is I'm looking for. If you love to bake or are just in the mood for something to nibble on and find yourself in the area, you should definitely give this store a visit. read more

The store is clean and well-stocked, but sometimes the attitude of some (not all) of the cashiers leaves a lot to be desired. I've had encounters with rude attitude, as though it is a bother for them to be doing their job. If they don't like customer service, then maybe they should work elsewhere -- away from serving customers. Apart from that, most visits are pleasant. However, leaving the store after having received bad attitude is why I give this review only two stars. read more
