I'm not exactly sure why this is, but the Korean food in Edmonton is very good. There are a lot of solid restaurants to choose from, ranging from traditional cuisine all the way up to the more modern and innovative. There are plenty of options for Korean BBQ, Korean fried chicken, and of course Korean street food (like those crazy corn dogs!). Personally, some of the best Korean food that I've eaten in Canada has been right here in Edmonton. Open since 1973, Bul Go Gi House in the Bonnie Doon area has gotta be one of the longest-standing Korean restaurants in the city. Edmonton Journal named them Best Korean Restaurant 2020 and Best Korean Restaurant 2021. It's easy to see that this Korean favourite has reached institution status. Surprisingly, however, I had never visited myself! It was about time that I did and that I experienced Bul Go Gi House for myself. Visiting on a Saturday evening, reservations are recommended due to the restaurant's on-going popularity. You'll find Bul Go Gi House in an especially lovely and adorable neighbourhood, right in Edmonton's Quartier Francophone. It's arguably one of the best little corners of the city. The outside of the restaurant is nothing flashy and it looks like it's been around forever. Inside, the dining area is large, made up of various rooms, and potentially hasn't been updated at all since the 70s (which I love). You'll find exposed brick, wood paneling, and a general cafeteria vibe to the place. There are a few pieces of Korean art on the walls but for the most part the decor is pretty simple. Seated quickly, our server was exceptionally friendly and helpful in answering any of our questions. The menu is fairly extensive and leans in a very traditional direction. You won't find anything too wacky here, only the most classic, tested, and true plates. All of our dishes came out very quickly once ordered and the meal was accompanied by an automatic serving of steamed white rice. Curiously, we were not given chopsticks to use, only a fork and spoon. When dining Korean I am accustomed to using chopsticks and a spoon. I found myself missing the chopsticks but didn't bother mentioning it. As with most (all?) Korean restaurants, the meal begins with banchan. These small side dishes are almost always complimentary and you'll usually be served at least two of them. Sometimes there are like six of them and that's a real party! Bul Go Gi House offered up the two most popular types; Kimchi and Kongnamul (cold boiled bean sprouts with sesame oil). It's always a good idea to try the house kimchi at a Korean restaurant, so I appreciate that it's usually a lock to be served as banchan. The kimchi was filled with spicy, fermented magic. The sprouts were good too. I find that banchan is meant to be used as a palate cleanser and the pickled flavours facilitate that well. When choosing what to order, no other dish could be more obvious of a choice than the Bulgogi (Marinated beef with vegetables - $18.95). I mean, it's the restaurant's name. You'll find it in the Stir-Fries section of the menu and there are actually three different types to select from. We went with the most classic one in this case. Thin, marinated slices of beef stir-fried in a pan with various vegetables like cabbage, carrots, sprouts and onions. For a self-titled dish, I enjoyed Bul Go Gi Houses' version a lot. Expertly made, the beef was extremely flavourful. The whole plate boasted a savoury deliciousness. The veggies were fresh and bright, delightfully crisp. If I had any criticism it would be that I wish there had been a little bit more beef! An obvious must-try, you won't be disappointed with this namesake dish. Even though steamed rice was provided, a favourite Korean dish of mine is always the bibibap, a rice dish that gets combined with a bunch of different ingredients. Bul Go Gi House has four different types to choose from but my very favourite is Dolsot Bibimbap (Vegetarian, hot stone pot bibimbap - $18.50) which refers to the sizzling stone bowl that the dish is served in. The benefit to the dolsot version is that, as previously mentioned, the bowl arrives sizzling-hot. This caramelizes the rice and other ingredients, creating crispy and delicious edges. Once you dolsot it's difficult to go back! This version is served with vegetables, rice and egg. You will also always be provided with gochujang to use, a Korean hot sauce which you can add to taste. My method is to add (a lot of) gochujang to the dish and then to mix the entire bowl up, incorporating all of the ingredients. This also breaks up the egg and distributes the yolk throughout. Once this is done everything touching the bowl itself adopts the aforementioned crispiness and it is quite wonderful. This version was very good and I enjoyed their quality ingredients and the overall experience of it all. For our last dish we weren't exactly sure what to order! Bul Go Gi House does seven different bokkeum-style dishes, which I love. These a

Wow, first of all, I'm impressed that Bul Go Gi House has over 1,000 reviews on Urbanspoon. Seriously, that's absolutely massive, especially when you consider it's Edmonton. They must be doing something right, right? That or all the Caucasian people know about it (more on that later, haha). Bul Go Gi House is located right in the heart of U of A's campus Saint-Jean. It looks a bit run down on the outside but don't let that deter you. The interior is clean and the space is surprisingly much bigger than one would anticipate from the outside. The restaurant was packed for a Tuesday night and seriously, I can't say I've ever seen such a variety in clientele at a Korean restaurant before. I guess being open for 40+ years and being the first Korean, family run restaurant in town has its perks. The service is decent (typical Asian style) but they are quick and friendly. I like how they bring out a jug of water right at the beginning so that you don't have to constantly ask for more water. We decided to go with a couple dishes to share: - Banchan - we were given bean sprout salad and kim chi. Bean sprouts were delicious and they re-filled them quickly when we ran out. - Yuke gae jang ($13.00 large) - hot and spicy soup with chunks of beef and vegetables. The soup lived up to both those descriptions. Piping hot and spicy to boot. Apparently this is my friend's go to soup, Korean style. Good stuff indeed. - Dweh ji bulgogi ($12.75) - marinated spicy pork with vegetables. It comes with a side bowl of rice. Another solid dish. The pork was well seasoned. - Be beem nang myon ($12.75) - thin, chewy noodles in a sweet and spicy sauce. These are cold, chilled noodles which I've never had before. We both really enjoyed this dish as the noodles had the perfect texture. My friend was concerned with how authentic the food was going to be but once we had our first bite, she was completely satisfied. In a nutshell, the food is quite good but Bul Go Gi House clearly caters their flavour and spiciness to their main clientele. I guess you could say it's westernized Korean. Everything is tasty but it could use a bit more fire power to it. Still, it's a solid choice if you're in the area.

This place is a delicious little hideaway. The portions have shrunk in recent years the ribs are still tasty. I was disappointed to pay $24 for three pieces oF BBQ ribs! We also had an order of kimchi fried rice and I had a tea. The service was great. A very sweet girl who was an international student. As soon as you sit down they bring you kimchi and sprouts. I noticed that portion was much smaller as well. There isn't much in the way of ambiance since the place is basically two trailers put together but it's clean and open. It's the sort of place where you go for the food. I really would give it 3.5 stars if I could due to the shrinking portion sizes.

I've been going to the Bul Go Gi House my entire life. It's been open for over 30 years, and a staple of delicious Korean Food in Edmonton. There are a few things that always stay the same at the Bul Go Gi House. The quality of food is always the same (delicious), the prices are always reasonable, and the service is always friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are always tiny and out-of-date, which is part of the charm. The decor is beautiful and casual, and hasn't changed much in all the time I've been coming there. The menu is full of variety, from rices, to meats, to hot pots. I would absolutely recommend the Bul Go Gi, the meat is delicious and tender. It's a great menu to select new things from and try a bunch of dishes with a group of friends. This is the type of restaurant where you order a whole lot of the menu, split it amongst yourselves family style, and pay a reasonable rate for it. (And have some take out leftover!) Every meal comes with steamed rice, bean sprout salad (so good!), and kim chi. I recommend trying it all! For those who aren't used to eating with chopsticks, or who haven't mastered the rice on chopsticks combo, they also bring forks to the table. (So no worries!) This restaurant is one of my favourites in Edmonton. It's consistently good, with fantastic service, and amazing food.

Came here on a whim after work today with the boyfriend. I've been craving Korean food for the past few weeks so I was happy to finally get my fix. This is my go-to restaurant and first pick! Happy to report that we both left very satisfied this round too! My eyes were obviously bigger than my stomach (like usual!) so I took the liberty of ordering for the two of us: - Pork Bone Stew - This is only available Mon - Wed evenings. Served in a thick stone bowl, the stew is more like a soup as it is brothy and contains cabbage, potato, and two giant pork bones with meat. The broth was tasty, not overly spicy which I appreciated, and the pork bones were delicious since they had pieces of pork meat still attached and tender to boot! - Bul-Ga-Bee - Grilled marinated beef short ribs - one of my favourite dishes but also the priciest IMO since it's almost $23 and for that price you only receive three slabs of beef short ribs. But they are marinated and cooked to perfection - medium rare, tender, and oh so perfect! - Bul-Go-Gi - Sweetly marinated and tender beef accompanied by grilled veggies. A solid dish! And perfect for leftovers! - Jap-Chae - Deliciously chewy noodles with broccoli, carrot, onion, and shitake mushrooms... Another favourite of mine! The meal came with steamed rice and sides of kim chi and delicious bean sprout salad. My boyfriend tried the Korean beer they offer called Cass and he said it was delicious! I'm not a beer drinker by any means but it's supposed to be a light and crisp beer =) BTW... our server was excellent - her name was Lucia (sp?). She was unobtrusive enthusiastic and super pleasant! Keep up the great work! All in all another wonderful experience at the classic Edmonton institution of Bul-Go-Gi House. Don't let the exterior (or interior) fool ya! The food is excellent! =)

We picked the soybean paste soup with tofu, beef brisket and veggies. I enjoyed the saltiness of the soup with rice as well. The dumplings were super crispy and were deep fried perfection. Ambiance was lively as the restaurant was busy. Restaurant was clean including the restrooms. There was plenty of free parking on the plaza. My only complaint is the price of the dumplings. We love kbbq but it's very expensive here in Edmonton, and there are only two in the city. It's located in an inconspicuous (weird if you ask me) spot, in a neighbourhood in front of a school. The meats are served buffet style and you grab your own drinks from the soda fountain. Sides of lettuce, salad (my personal fave- amazing vinaigrette to cut the meat), kimchi, bean sprouts, etc. There were also a few variety of fried items. My favorite was the shrimp chips. They also have fried rice but no white rice. Which leads me to my next point-- Service: AMAZING!! One of the older ladies saw my boyfriend and I mixing our fried rice and kimchi to make kimchi fried rice. She asked if we wanted some sesame oil and seaweed to put into our fried rice to make it more bokkeum-bap!! She came back with a bottle of sesame oil and mixed it in for us. The only downsides: They put a piece of parchment paper over the grill which kind of absorbs all the juice. The selection of meat is very limited as well. For 2 people not including our alcohol, it came to about $75 for AYCE. Not too bad considering it's the only other kbbq place in town. Will definitely be regulars!

The space inside was nice and much bigger than it looked outside. There were a few diners when we got there, but still plenty of seating. We were seated, given the menus, and water (including a jug for the table, which I appreciated). The server told us that when we're ready to order to press the button on the side of the table. I love when restaurants do that. I ordered the Hanip to drink, which is a seasonal tea beverage, a non alcoholic type cocktail. I got the Japchae, which is a bowl of Japchae (glass noodles), beef bulgogi, spinach, carrots, onions with a shitake soy dressing. My friend got a coke and the Donkas, a breaded pork cutlet with a cabbage slaw. It also came with ketchup and bbq sauce on the side. Our food came out very fast; I don't think we waited more than 8 minutes, but our drinks hadn't arrived and the server said they'd be on the way. With our meals they brought out a small side of vegetables that included kimchi, bean spouts, radish (may have been daikon) with this delicious sauce, and mashed potatoes, plus a side of steamed rice. I'm not sure if the veggies and rice were for my meal or my friend's or for the table, but we both enjoyed it. I really liked the radish dish. Our meals were also delicious. My friend's pork cutlet was massive and she said it was really good. I loved the Japchae, it was savoury and comforting. I had been debating about ordering one of the full vegetable dishes like the eggplant or cucumber salad, but the serving sizes are decent and I wasn't hungry. The downside was they forgot about our drinks. I kept waiting and finally partway through our meal I pressed the button and asked about our drinks, and they had completely forgotten. The server (a different one from before) apologized. My friend's coke came out right after that and my drink took a few minutes to make. I do understand things get missed (I've worked in restaurants before), but it also wasn't very busy. So I can't give Hanjan 5-stars because of this but it was still a really meal. Both my friend and I said we'd go back again.

But I like Gyu-Kaku more (Better price for same experience and I like the marinated cheap meats better than the expensive cuts).

We arrived right before other people filled up the place so it was a little busy. I'm surprised at how much space and seating they have. At first I just saw 4 person tables but they led us to the other area where they had large tables for bigger parties. We had 9 people in our party and they seated us immediately. My boyfriend and I split the Bulgogi Fries and the Padak (Soy Garlic) Korean Fried Chicken. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. After one bite of the Bulgogi Fries, it was an immediate 10/10. The fries were crispy and had the perfect golden crisp + soft inside ratio. And don't even get me started with the sauce on top. The white sauce was light, and had the perfect combination of slightly sweet and savory. It was a wonderful aioli. And the veggies added were so good. The tomatoes and scallions added a nice freshness and slight acidity to the overall dish. Lastly the bulgogi was just *chef's kiss*. I don't really know how else to explain it other than the Bulgogi Fries were a well-balanced dish. We were scooping every single missed vegetable in the sauce after we demolished the fries. The Padak (Soy Garlic) fried chicken was so tasty. Whenever I get wings, my go-to is pretty much anything soy garlic, or anything included garlic. The fried chicken skin was the best part. Great texture, crunchy, crispy, wonderful flavor. It was a great blend of savory, umami, and garlic. And the green onions on top was a great addition. Portion size for both things we ordered was perfect for the two of us. Also, don't even get me started on the banchans. Great kimchi, radish kimchi was so refreshing, and that mashed potato side? Terrific. We asked for more banchan when we were done. Lastly, we came back the very next day to try the desserts. At first, I wanted to pick one dessert to share between me and my boyfriend but it was so difficult to choose one. So we got both lol. We ordered the Injeolmie Waffle, Honey Butter Bread, and tried some of my cousin's Strawberry Bingsu. The Injeolmi Waffle itself was delicious, sweet but not too sweet. The ice cream added that sweetness and the almonds on top were nice. And the Honey Butter Bread? Wow. The milk bread and the fresh whipped cream were fluffy, light, and not too sweet. I would go back again in a heartbeat. If I was in the neighborhood, I would be a regular. And when I give a place 5 stars, 5 stars to me means: take my money and I might dangerously spend too much of my paycheck here. Which is what I did, but no regrets. I will not stop talking about this place. 10's all across the board for me! Love you Hanjan.

Otherwise it is a large restaurant, pretty non descript in nature but clean and orderly. I like that after you are seated, and you get your menus you ring a doorbell at your table when you are ready. I like this. The servers are not running around ragged. Great menu - lots of selections. We ordered a lot of different items - Gamja Tang - Spicy, hearty pork bone soup with potatoes, green onions, hot peppers, and ground sesame seeds. Galbi - Beef short ribs soaked in a sweet soy marinade and grilled. Cheese Buldak - Korean Fire Chicken, tender chicken coated in a spicy gochujang sauce with rice cakes, potatoes, and mozzarella cheese melted on top, and soy garlic fried chicken. It also came with some steamed rice and banchan which is small appetizers of pickeled vegs. Everything was delicous but my favourite was the gamja tang. Delicous! Despite our freezing we also splurged on the mango bingsu - shaved ice dessert topped with fresh mangoes, ice cream, and condensed milk. Delicous but we walked out like popsicles. I will have to come back in summer :)

The pork in the soup is one of the best I've had from all the Gam Ja Tangs in Edmonton - nice cuts, good flavour, and perfect cookedness. The vegetables have been really fresh and cooked well. One thing to note is that the soup isn't very spicy. Overall, I'd give them 8.8/10

It's definitely a cozy spot better equipped to serve smaller groups than larger parties. The menu is pretty straightforward with just enough variety so that everyone would probably find something they'd be interested in. I ordered a Bulgogi (stir-fried marinated beef) that came with rice and some banchan, then I also got a separate appetizer of Mandu (fried chicken dumplings). All the food was as expected and I can't really complain about anything. The bulgogi was cooked to perfection, the mandu was crispy and soft as a fried dumpling should be. The portions are large and is just the right amount for a meal if you eat like me, or a meal and some leftovers if you eat less. I wasn't in a rush and enjoyed my meal, they checked how I was doing a few times but never felt pushy. Super friendly and very prompt service. I'd try some other things next time I went. Go with a small group of 4 and try a few different dishes that you can share is my advice.

The food is well-cooked with good ingredients and very flavorful. If you want more spice, not a problem - they can make it as spicy as you want, or even not spicy at all. Having a happy and welcoming environment is essential for customers, and they definitely deliver on that. As a customer, I definitely don't like some of the restaurants waiters and waitress always have a poker face to you and it seems like you owe their money and you made their day not good. It is a fast food joint, so don't expect much for atmosphere or comfortablity. And the chick behind the counter wasn't really helpful or friendly. She reminded me of someone that is disgruntled in life and needs to be doing something else. That being said, food was great. Nice selection of street food. We grabbed a selection of things - ramen, bulgogi bibimbab, sausage mozza corn dog, sweet butter fries, tuna mayo kimbab, and garlic soy chicken bites as well as two bubble teas. Food came out extemely fast. It was hot and tasted fresh. My family enjoyed their ramen. I really liked the bulgogi bibimbab. Good portion size, and a good ratio of meat to veggies. Beef was well seasoned. my kid had the spicy pork cutlet ramen and I sampled the broth. It was really spicy and delicous. Chicken bites were good but not outstandish. Birthday kid wolfed down the fries and corn dog. If you like these things, you really need to come here. The Kimbab was fresh but I was hoping for a bit more flavours in it. The bubble tea was fine but a bit sweet for my liking. However, if you need a quick bite to eat and are in the area, choose this over any fast food establishment. About the same in price point, and way better flavours and freshness. This would also make a good take out for a picnic.
