Despite being right next to the 61st St stop, The Dugout is one of the lesser frequented Irish pubs…read morein Woodside. It reminds me a time in the neighborhood when Irish folks were the majority and when times were so much more simple. This pub is low key, rarely crowded, somewhat easy to miss, and extremely local. The place reminds me a ton of the Courtyard Ale House in Sunnyside, from the exterior to the darkly lit interior with an intimate bar setup. They too had an outdoor setup during the pandemic. The bartenders are friendly enough and the clientele is a lot of older folks that drink alone. There are some TVs, which are as small as the pub itself. The drink selection is pretty basic with some bottled beer and some limited taps. Whether it's a glass of Stella or a pint of Guinness, it's what most of the place is often drinking. There are some TVs playing sports and no food that I'm aware of. The plus side is that the drinks are going to be affordable and there is vibe is the least pretentious in the area. If one is looking for a simple ambiance with a little sports and a lot of local vibes, The Dugout completely fits the bill. Indulge in the personalities and have a pint while playing something from their jukebox. If one is lucky, it might just be on a night where there's a little live music.

Cuisine: 8 Service: 7…read moreDecor: 7 Value: 8 Overall: 8 Four of us came here because I heard their fish and chips are very good. I am a sucker for this famous British/Irish deep fried goodness. Well, I can say without a doubt that this version is excellent (8.5/10) as described. The dish comes with three pieces that are crispy and tender. However, they gotta make a better tartar sauce than the ones they served in packets. Also, we switched out chips for onion rings. They were fantastic! I also really enjoyed their French Onion Soup (8/10) and the Shepherds Pie (7.5/10). The soup was flavorful without being too salty like most restaurants, while the pie had relatively fluffy mash potato with tasty ground beef mixture. The only item that was a slight letdown was the Chicken Pot Pie (6/10). The puff pastry was decent and so was the cream sauce. The problem was the overcooked and dry chicken breast meat. Our server was very friendly and always had a smile on her face. Btw, even though the space was basically a dive bar, the energetic 60's and 70's music was definitely a plus. Therefore, I gave it a slightly higher score for decor. All in all, this was a great experience.

At one time, Cronin & Phelan had a terrible reputation. Their patrons would hang out on the corner…read moreand stench up the street with cigarette smoke, then during the COVID period planned super-spreader parties, as advertised by their followers on social media. And that is why I boycotted them. Everything was very lax at that time, with little enforcement from the SLA. In October, my partner and I headed back to try their Irish breakfast and to see how things had improved. At the time, a large party was being held in their backroom, and we were not prepared to wait forever. We asked to speak with the owner, Mike Peacock, and told him we had to be at church to ring the church bells. We appreciated his dedication to getting us our food on time, but to be really honest, the Irish breakfast was not the best that could have been made.

I got the Carolina Tangy BBQ and then I tried one of his Jerk Wings (which took entirely too long to come out . Felt like it was seasoned on the spot. Ate my wings slowly and finished our drinks before they came out). Carolina bbq wings were FIRE. Cooked perfectly, tasty sauce and it was great sauce to wing ratio. The jerk wings were pretty good too. I'd order them next time now that I know about the length of time it takes. The French fries were perfect as well honestly. Ordered some churros and they were a 4/5; just a little too crunchy but I enjoyed. My first drink was strong but I ordered a Long Island second and it was pretty blah. Service was okay. My server was kind of blah but she got the job done and was constantly around in case we needed anything. Ambiance was great. Really good place to watch the games with your friends. Lots of TVs.

We ordered the teriyaki wings with extra sauce, and they were really disappointing. The sauce tasted like straight soy sauce, very thin and salty, with none of the sweetness or depth you'd expect. No hint of garlic, honey, or ginger, and the wings themselves were dry. We also tried the grilled chicken club, which was also dry and pretty forgettable. The shoestring fries were hard, and the sweet potato fries weren't anything special, especially for the price of $8. It's a bummer to say, but we've decided to take this place off our revisit list. Sad to see a former favorite slip because of what felt like a lack of care coming out of the kitchen.
