It's not every time you step out after a meal at a restaurant that you heave a sigh of content, and decisively declare that every penny you spent on satisfying the rumblings of your tummy was money worth spent. Bukharaa is a cozy little gem hidden amidst the drab trappings of a strip mall plaza. My husband and I came here on a late last night (Saturday night- most other restaurants with good reviews were closed or closing soon while Bukharaa was open till 11 pm). The restaurant inside had a casual and relaxed feel, although the big television screen in the back playing Bollywood music was a tad distracting.
Right off, it was apparent how hospitable the people running the place were. We were asked if we wanted iced or non-iced water, and we were served some complimentary perfectly fried papads while we perused the menu. The side sauces were of the usual mint and tamarind variety, but there was also a cup of spiced chopped onion that is usually found sprinkled over masala papad - a nice little deviation from what you typically get in most Indian restaurants.
We started our meal with piping hot veggie samosas, the outside of which were golden-brown perfection. The inside stuffing, however, fell a little short - both my husband and I thought it was too bland and not particularly flavorful. However, we were able to make do by smothering our mouthfuls with the accompanying mint sauce.
The rest of our meal, however, exceeded expectations. We got the tandoori paneer - a fabulous sizzling platter of soft, perfectly spiced paneer accompanied by crunchy onions and lettuce, grilled to retain their natural flavor. I am not a huge fan of paneer, but couldn't help marveling at how each mouthful melted in my mouth. To our delight, the owner served us complimentary fresh naan, and as some of the other reviews have mentioned, we'd never seen such a large, soft, fluffy version of this baked delight before! Interestingly, I'm not a huge fan of naan either (my husband is), but I couldn't help relishing it in its current form.
We also ordered the vegetable biryani (because I needed my rice fix), which was flavorful and came with a raita that complemented the flavors of the biryani beautifully. By this time, we were both ridiculously full, and obviously requested boxes to pack up the remainder of our meal, gleeful of the fact we were going to continue experiencing the yumminess the next day. We were then served with two cups of complimentary rice pudding/kheer, which was creamy and not at all cloyingly sweet - that went down pretty easily despite our full tummies. All in all, full points for service and the delicious entrees! Note - because the service takes a while, it's best to come here to enjoy a relaxed and indulgent dinner, not if you're in a rush to get back to work during the day, or in any sort of hurry at all. read more
