Several years ago, my wife and I began following a low-fat (no added oils) vegan diet. Fortunately, some cultures (e.g., Ethiopian, Indian) cater to a vegetarian crowd, so -- with minimal modification -- we can usually make those places work for us.
Of course, Indian food is one such cuisine, so we tried a bunch of Indian places. Sadly, we found that most Indian places use/add so much oil, that it's as if we ordered an oil soup and they tossed in some vegetables/beans/spices/etc. Blargh.
One day, we stumbled on Bukharaa and explained to the server that we didn't want any added oil (e.g., placed on top). She said something about their not using very much oil when they cook.
Having been to about a dozen Indian places at the time and having been disappointed with them all, we were rather skeptical.
We were wrong.
Admittedly, our vegan diet keeps us focused on a very narrow part of any restaurant's menu, so we can't comment on their non-veg dishes, but we've yet to find another Indian place that makes the low-added-oil dishes we can eat.
(I've also not been to their buffet (I think my wife has once or twice), but last weekend, the owner mentioned to us that they swapped out paneer for tofu in some of the buffet dishes, so I might give it a try down the road.)
Here's our standing order:
- two kuchumber salads (we try to make them at home, but they're just not as good)
- one baingan bartha
- one saag chana (typically, places offer saag paneer (no good for us), so they swap the chana for the paneer)
- we get rice, not naan (although I think there have some vegan "bread" options, but rice works for us)
My wife and I split (okay, gently fight over portions of!) the eggplant and the spinach and the food is always really, really good.
(My wife's not an okra fan, but she even enjoys that when we're really hungry and pick a third dish.)
We recently discovered patra and just last night, I picked up some from a restaurant in Decatur, brought it home, and it was far oilier than the patra at Bukharaa.
My credit card accounts only let me search back two years, but I see that we've been there 33 times (brought friends and relatives several times) and we've never been disappointed.
Our only "problem" is that we live in Buford, so it's not next door. Of course, if we lived too close, we'd probably overdo it more than we do now. :)
Okay, I guess one more "problem" is that sometimes the TVs are a little loud. My wife is easily distracted by such things, so we have to sit strategically to keep her from zoning out. :) read more
