I used their store website to verify an item was in stock. I then asked for the location of the item when I got there and the employee said he's never seen it so it must not be something they carry. I told him it on their website it says available and that I can even place the order online and pick it up at the Ace specifically on 75th st in 15 mins. (It's literally advertised) He told me "you can't believe everything you read online" then proceeded to search and locate the item that was indeed in stock... like the website said. Just left because the Supervisor was MIA and they do not TRUST the check out team to make a decision on a price check. Not to mention that they are blowing out a bunch of old stuff and need to have manager approval on that as well. There were 20 people in line and people started to leave. They obviously have a camera system in there, so whoever was even by one of the close circuit TVs had to see what the hell was going on. read more

I have shopped at this store for over 30 years. I went today to the store as I have 100s of times (if not more) There was a customer in the store without a mask so I asked at the counter why they weren't having their customers following guidelines. You can see how brilliantly ignoring them is working around the country. He said the company policy is for an employee not to mention or require a mask. I won't be back. That they care so little for my safety or that of their own employees means they really don't care about their community. read more

What a joke! I was told $12 labor to repair 3 screens and get charged $73 to repair 3 screens? I could have bought new ones. Nothing but retired gents that can't hear or care about helping customers who ate waiting for service. Stood at the service desk pushing the help needed button. Couldn't find anyone in the store willing to help. Finally got the attention of someone and his responce was, " I was concentrating on the task in hand." When the manager Brian finally showed up his responce was... those are the charges and didn't adjust my bill for the mistake his employee made when I dropped them off. Very reasonably priced you could find maybe some items less expensive and other locations however we're only talking a dollar or two but they also have many items that are less expensive especially when they have all of their clearance items out which is 99% of the time. They give you hands on customer service you don't have employees walking pass you trying to ignore you there to help and assist you and they genuinely care you can tell. I have been coming here off and on for almost 20 years. Apart from the big box stores, Buikema has a lock on Naperville hardware. You will pay WAY more for everything and will not get the extra service to justify the premium. In fact, I have found the folks at the 3 big box stores nearby to be more helpful. While I don't begrudge people wealth, one of the owner/managers always has his Porsche parked outside just in case you're unsure about the profits being made here. Kind of annoying. Once the bastion of all things hard to find in nuts and bolts, this Ace now doesn't even carry all the hardware the big boys do. I recently had to go down the street when this store had no trim screws and the person helping me had never even heard of them. Hardly an esoteric item. The first guy in hardware I approached at HD told me precisely where they were without hesitation. I only go in here now when I have exhausted all other choices. read more

Had duplicate keys made here 3 times by three different people (all in the same afternoon) None of keys worked! Drove back and forth and finally asked to speak with the manager on my fourth visit to the store. He advised me to try another business in the area (not another Ace Hardware), didn't think they would be able to duplicate my key and offered me a refund. I was very disappointed! Made my return and drove to the Ace Hardware on 111th and 59. I explained my situation and the salesman apologized for the other store. My duplicate keys were made and guess what??? They work! Avoid this location as there are plenty of other capable ACE Hardware locations in Naperville. It took three employees, including the manager, to track down an online order for a grill which included assembly and delivery. Once they finally found the order, they admitted that they wouldn't be able to deliver it because multiple employees recently quit. I then offered to pick the grill up myself once assembled. They said okay but still needed to confirm if they had it in stock. It took another 10 minutes for them to confirm the grill wasn't even in stock so I had to cancel the order. I had to call on the delivery date to find out they no longer can make deliveries, and oh, by the way, we don't even have your grill in stock. Even worse, no apology from the inept manger. read more

Pleasantly surprised. Stopped at Buikema's Ace Hardware for the first time this past Tuesday to have a key duplicated. Being my first time at this location, I went up to the customer service counter to ask where in the store keys are cut. As I approached the counter, the female employee warmly greeted me and asked me if I needed help. She pointed out clearly where I needed to go, and even paged an employee to meet me there, which he did. The gentleman employee that met me at the counter was friendly and cheerful. Side note: I attribute the great customer service of these two employees to their 'mature' age... people who have been around long enough to know what good old-fashioned customer service at a neighborhood shop looks like :) From the time I walked into the store, walked to customer service and then to the key cutting area, and walked back to the register to pay, took less than 10 minutes. This is why I always go to a local Ace Hardware to have keys duplicated, because it is much quicker and easier than going to the big box stores. read more

I am so disappointed in my experience at this location. Not only was it hotter than heck in this location but the Assistant Manager who helped me was not friendly and acted in a way like helping me was taking time away from something more important. I'm 7 months pregnant and have had a great experience at Home Depot and the Ace Hardware in Yorkville so her demeanor threw me for a loop. I think if you have the title of Manager you should WANT to help your customers and answer questions without giving attitude. I asked about a specific paint color and her response was, "I'll have to mix that!" Well dugh, I just wanted to see the paint sample. Enough crying over spilled milk I will just drive all the way to Oswego or Yorkville to get the next gallon of paint that I will need. TERRIBLE experience that was ONLY due to the rudeness of the Assistant Manager, Joe Nepsi. Everyone else working at this Ace was nice and the product I had been searching for was in stock of which I had purchased online and needed to pick up in store. But the complete and utter rudeness by this guy was uncalled for. He yelled across the store to the cashier that I needed to wait for him to make his way around whenever that would be. Ok that's fine, I understand he was busy. But he kept going at it and I had not even spoken to him yet. All I needed to do was pick up and sign for the order. I didn't need the attitude that came with it. Luckily I had called the general manager today who was very polite, thanked me for purchasing the product at his store and apologized to me for the behavior of the assistant manager and that he will bring this incident up with him. It didn't sound like this is the first complaint towards this guy but at least the general manager made up for the lack of respect I had experienced the night before. So I bumped up the 1 star to 2. But my advice is don't order and pick up at this location so you don't have to deal with the rude guy either. Either way Joe needs to find a job that doesn't involve customer service because he certainly lacks the kindness that goes into the job. read more

DO NOT FILL UP PROPANE HERE!! Exchanging a tank might be a different story but I went there to get my propane tank filled, had to PRE-PAY $20 + tax, and by the time I got back to the filing area, I was told the tank was pretty full already!!! The meter read just under 2 gallons was put in, and when I asked what did i pay $20 for if the thank was pretty full already, kept getting, that's what it costs to fill it up. Went to the Mother's Day Flower sale Saturday a.m. It was pouring rain, thunder and lightening. The staff was cold and wet. It didn't stop any of the workers from being helpful, and with a sense of humor. Thanks coming to work at 5 a.m. so a gardener could get her plants at a fantastic price. read more

Customer service sucks at this location. I was there to drop the window for glass repair and nobody sowed up at glass repair desk for 15 minutes despite of ringing the bell. Employees were trying to run away to avoid answering any of my questions. When asked why service so slow, employee at cash register said it is 5pm Sunday and so most employees left already. Not going to Buikema's ace hardware ever, even I have to spend more. read more

The Montgomery Buikema's Ace is closing. According to Penny Austin, the manager (who in my opinion is responsible for the store going downhill) the store will be closed in August 2009. It is too bad, it is a nice convenient store and most of the employees are very nice and helpful. I prefer to go there instead of Home Depot or Sears where you get no help and there is too much to have to look through to find what you need. This store has been mis-managed though and they should put in a new store manager before they think of closing it. read more

This place is the absolute WORST. The younger kids who work here are nice; it's the adults who are so rude. Every time I come in and need to ask someone for assistance, someone is rude to me. It's almost like being in the Twilight Zone. One guy never stopped to look at me as I asked him a question. He exhaled loudly, radioed to someone, and continued to be completely bothered by my existence. Then, I asked about window glass replacement, and I was told they are super backed up. Okay? This Ace location is the worst! They never have enough registers open and on top of that, the cashiers are slow and rude. My husband went in to have the gas tank filled for our grill. He waited 15 minutes in line to pay, and another 15 minutes for someone to come out and fill the tank. A full 30 minutes to have a tank filled at 10:00 am on a weekday? The man who filled the tank was polite and apologized for the wait. He said that they have been asking management for more help during the busy spring/summer months but they refuse to hire more people. I think that says a lot. read more

This is the worst hardware store I've ever been to. I have gone multiple times and every time it is a bad experience. I bought a grill cover from Ace that an employee said would fit my grill and when I tried to exchange for one that would actually fit they would not exchange. They told me they discontinued the grill cover and there was nothing they could do for me. I will not be shopping here again and I would advise everyone to stay clear from this store. This store is consistent with inventory, good service and knowledgeable personnel. I always go there when I need hardware that the Big Box stores might not have or that they might not have in the quantity that I want (I hate buying 300 screws if I only need a handful of them). The personnel are helpful (and therefore almost always busy, but reliable). The "Helpful Hardware Folks" is an appropriate motto. If there is one thing I would change about the store it would be the way they store the 50-lb salt blocks. Storing them outside and covering them with a sheet of plastic is not a good way to keep them dry, and I often have to work to find blocks that are not pock-marked, eroded or that have cardboard stuck to them. Still, the hardware personnel help carry the blocks to the car and load them for me, so I guess there's a bit of a tradeoff. Overall, this is a good outfit with service that smacks of the old-time hardware stores. Thanks for preserving that. read more

Called to enquire about a one-hole kitchen faucet. After being put on hold forever and calling back twice, someone looked at the shelves and said they have "several models" and the lowest cost is $41. I was happy to hear since since a comparable one at Menards was $80 is what I was told. I told this person to please check again and let me know since I would be driving 30 minuutes in heavy traffic to get there. I specifically said I am looking for the one-hole and not the 3-hole model. When I got there I found there was a one-hole kitchen faucet that cost around $90 and the one in the $41 range was actually a 3-hole faucet. Left me wondering what part of the conversation in plain English the person that gave me the incorrect info over the phone did not understand. After spending what seemed like forever on the phone and 30 min driving there and 15 min at the store, had to go to Menards to get one, that too at the higher price.Not to mention it being a weekend it took me a while to find parking in the heavily crowded parking lot. When I spoke to the person at the counter about my experience at this store she just shrugged her shoulder. Not even an apology. I was provided inaccurate information on the phone, the phone call took too much time, no help at the store was offered, and did not find the product I was looking for at this store. By contrast when I called Menards and Home Depot they told me exactly what they have, how many pieces they have and the cost range in 5 minutes. Never will I go to this store again. read more
