The only sushi place within miles of Malibu LOL. So of course it'd be more expensive than the norm. Service here was fantastic. Everyone was incredibly nice. They also allowed my dog to sit on my lap during our meal, which is a huge plus. The food here was 3.5 stars overall, but with the service and their love towards my dog, I'll bump it to a 4. My sister and I ordered the following: SPICY ALBACORE RICE CAKES (4/5): These were probably my favorite! The rice patty had truffle oil on top, which gave each bite such a unique flavorful taste. The patty was chewy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. RAINBOW ROLL(3/5): For $15, definitely not worth. This is your classic rainbow roll. Nothing fancy. No unique presentation. In fact, it looked more plebe than most rainbow rolls I've seen. Tasted decent - can't really go wrong with this order. The price tag is where I'm bothered most, but hey. It's Malibu. NY STEAK COMBINATION WITH VEGETABLE TEMPURA (4/5): The NY steak was actually cooked pretty well! The meat was on the tougher side, but the flavors were really good. It came with rice and salad too. I thought the vegetable tempura was done really well. The total for 2 people was around $70 with tax and tip. Oh well. read more

I've been to Bui Sushi a few times now and can confidently recommend it. Easy hassle free location in the Ralph's shopping center next to Ollo. I love the Clark Little art and patio area. They don't allow dogs on the patio but there is always a socialite with a "service animal" out there. Friendly service, delicious fresh fish and wonderful flavors. I highly recommend the albacore tuna appetizer and the Malibu sunset roll. Because of the location, it's an easy spot to see celebs. I love their mixed drinks. They also serve beer and wine. If you sit at the bar the sushi chefs don't talk to anyone which may be appropriate for Malibu. It's fancy enough for a night out but we have been here a few times right after the beach covered in sand and sunscreen and welcomed with open arms for lunch. read more

What possesses a man to drive 12 miles up the coast for sushi in Malibu, when he has at least 12 sushi restaurants within a 3 block radius of his house in Santa Monica? Two words..... well two words and an acronym.... sorta..... well five words if you spell it out completely....... (damn it, I have to go ask an English teacher if "OMG" is a proper acronym, because you can't actually say the word in one syllable..... anyone? anyone?) But I digress...... 3 (or 5) words, "OMG BUI SUSHI!!!!" I'm serious. I make the drive up for two particular dishes: Caterpiller roll, and Miso butterfish. You'd think the caterpiller roll is pretty standard in most sushi places. I thought the same.... until Bui sushi blew my mind. So good that I often will make the drive for take out and bring about 6 orders back home to Santa Monica (no, really). MIso cod is pretty standard fare in LA, but the approach at Bui is amazeballs. I don't know if it's the cut of fish, or their own sauce. Whatever it is, I make the drive there for this dish as well. The fact they call it "butterfish" should tell you everything about the dish. Not a fan of these two dishes, but in the company of others that are? Make the trip up. Their lunch bowls are very good, especially the poke, and of course all the good stuff you'll find at the top notch places. Their toro sashimi has never failed me. A note on their staff. LOVE the service. The hosts always remind me of small town friendliness I've only ever found in Maine, so it feels like coming home. The fun part of dining here? Lots of eye candy in fellow patrons, and if you're lucky and time it just right, you'll find yourself in a crowd that reminds you of Baywatch, Days of our Lives, and the original 90210 all in one place. Folks, you must experience and go to Bui Sushi by the Colony in Malibu, CA close to Pepperdine University. Melissa was a very courteous and warm host and more so her trainee, Masa, was very attentive. The food was very delicious and the mango with sweet rice was delicious dessert, kinda like the icing on the cake. I loved the ambiance and lots of chatter outside on the patio. My boyfriend and I were looking for a sushi restaurant to take our friend to celebrate her birthday. We are SO happy we chose Bui! I'm not such a sushi or sashimi person but everything I had was excellent! From the service, to the aesthetic to the presentation everything was worth 5 stars! Their manager Alex checked in on us twice and really ensured we were enjoying our meal and overall experience. I honestly prefer this place over Nobu and that's saying a lot! First time visiting Malibu and chose Bui Sushi based on Yelp rating and reviews. The sushi rolls were very fresh and flavorful. The service was outstanding. Our server, Jason, even noticed that my wife had left her purse behind and made sure it was locked away until we could retrieve it the following day. Where do I begin. The sashimi pieces come in exactly 5 thinly sliced mediocre tasting pieces, for about $17.5. The sushi itself comes in a pair of 2, for about 12 and up, depending on the fish. For the price, the sushi wasn't worth it, it was good don't get me wrong, but not for the price we paid for. The steak entree was Gucci mane, and it cost about $20. My girlfriend enjoyed the medium steak but not the mushrooms :( this came with miso soup, salad and rice topped with seaweed flakes and sesame seeds. The small patio is pet-friendly too. It's expensive but the portions are decent - soup, salad, rice in the dinner combo (butterfish and 8 pieces California roll) is enough for dinner and leftovers. Favorites: Miso soup (theirs is especially good), crispy rice cakes with albacore, miso butterfish, shrimp tempura (you can add panko crunch to any roll), surf and turf roll (perfectly seared filet mignon on the outside), and the sunset roll (whole tuna and mango). Bui recently updated their menu and added a lot of new items - lunch bowls (including poke), crab cakes, and eggplant crisps with tuna and avocado on top. If I could rate this place a 0 I would. My sister called this place to check if they were dog friendly. They said yes as long as we sit in the patio. So we show up and asked again before we got seated, "is it okay if we have her (pointing at our dog)". They responded yes. So we get seated and place our order. While waiting to be served our dog gets startled and barks. However we calm her down. Shortly after, an employee comes and tells us we can't have our dog disturbing the guests and insinuates that we leave. We complied and left, however the business should not have said they allowed dogs from the start. A dog barking is a possibility when you allow dogs at an establishment. Our time was wasted and ultimately we were given false information. I do not recommend this place at all. read more

We chose this place based on reviews. Nice outdoor lunch seating. Very small lunch menu. When our rolls came out it looked like they were made by some teenager who started today. There was no sauces, not flavors, no presentation. When the check came they had added $3 to each roll, when asked they said that's the updated prices. Manager would not honor the original price shown on the menu we ordered from, which they could not find as they literally put out newly printed menus. For dinner I got the rainbow roll and the paradise roll! Both 5 stars, I recommend asking for a side of eel sauce. I also ordered the miso butterfish but that's not very filling on its own. I also felt it needed more flavor and should be a bigger portion for the price. Their rolls are a bit overpriced. I got the lychee martini but I wouldn't recommend it. The service is good and they were playing the Lakers game on TV. Bui is located in a shopping center so there is plenty of free parking at the lot! read more

Place was alright food was average. The problem came later on. They brought me my check, gave them my card they took it back. 25 minutes later manager comes up to me says they lost the card and can't find it. Took my number down just to call me 15 minutes later they can't find my card and that they are sorry about it. Our original waiter was Deff new in this business and was very slow. We had no chopsticks or straws for the first 20 minutes of sitting down. The waiter seemed very unwelcoming and did not even make one eye contact with us. First off: 5 oz my foot. It was 1.5 shots of sake. Pinner and piping hot. Not warm. Our waitress was probably 12 years old and distracted. Even the chefs were looking for her. Wow! I really loved this gem! The sushi was delish and everyone seemed friendly. We got some tempura veggies, a couple rolls and we were off and running. Took my husband here for his birthday dinner because he wanted sushi and reviews seemed favorable. I was pretty disappointed, though, by the speed of the delivery, the temperature of the food, and the atmosphere. We were seated in a corner by a roosting of pigeons in what appears to be a strip mall (no ocean view, sadly). We ordered egg rolls for the appetizer and while they were hot on the outside, the inside was cold, maybe even frozen? We would've informed our server but he didn't come back for about 20 min. I ordered two rolls of sushi which were good but nothing mind blowing. My husband ordered the poke bowl, which he thoroughly enjoyed (that's why I gave 3 stars). The server assistant came by often to clear plates and was kind, wished my husband a happy bday. Our actual server stopped by maybe twice and when asked if they do anything for bdays, he said "I guess we could put a candle in a slice of cake or something." Would I return? I came to Bui Sushi after a long day at Zuma beach since it was the closest sushi place after Nobu. If you're ever having a beach day at Malibu and want sushi after, I'd recommend coming here. We ordered the Paradise Roll, Fire Roll, and Full Moon. The rolls are kinda big relative to other sushi places so it fills you up quicker. I would recommend substituting seaweed with soy paper because of how big the rolls are and it should taste better. Overall, the rolls melt in your mouth. They're fun, unique, and tasty. They also have a bar so you can always order any kind of cocktails you'd like! Great atmosphere, great service, and great food! read more

By far my favorite sushi place in Malibu. There are plenty of higher end sushi places such as the famous Nobu, but honestly they all get their fish/seafood from the same vendor in Malibu. Bui honestly has more flavor and offers more for your buck than Nobu does. They have a long list of rolls to chose from, and anything else you can think of. Customer service is beyond excellent.
