I really wanted to give this restaurant 5 stars. The last time my husband and I dined here, we had a wonderful waiter, who was very personable and efficient and the food was great. Today our server was Bridgette and she caused the lower rating. We had a reservation and were seated promptly. Although my husband's filet and my black cod lettuce cups were delicious, the service left more to be desired. Although it was 5:30 p.m. and not very crowded, we felt as though Bridgette rushed us out, leaving our bill and uttered a *barely* audible thank you. As I said, the food is quite good, but Bridgette spoiled what was supposed to be our anniversary dinner. If service isn't a big deal to you, give this restaurant a try. read more

The food was better than i remembered in the past. It was my cousin's birthday and the wait staff knew it. They did nothing at the end of the meal...no ice cream or other desserts to acknowledge him. Prices were higher than in the Valley but duh...it's Malibu! read more

Stoped by and picked up a couple rolls for takeout -- the shrimp tempura roll and rainbow roll w/ tempura. I was expecting more of an actual rainbow roll, but it was more like chopped tuna and salmon in a creamy sauce. Don't think I'd order that one again. read more

We have dined here many times but hadn't been recently and went on a Friday evening sat outside and had a wonderful meal. The Brussels sprouts were my favorite we ended up ordering two haha! I also had the veggie roll which was great my husband didn't like the eggplant chips but liked the Shishito and sashimi salad. Fast service friendly and the patio is very nice there. Damn good. We had the miso cod lettuce cups, yellowtail sashimi and a few rolls- everything we ate was delicious. I've been here several times and their food is fresh, tasty, well presented and consistent. The only drawback is they close at 9:00 pm so if it's a weekend night out in Malibu, you can't get in later than 8:30 PM. Would be great if they were open at least until 10 or 11 PM on Friday / Saturday nights. Service is good too. read more

The food was good the business opened and there were only two tables. I asked for a roll wrapped in cucumber instead of soy paper or seaweed because I am on the carnivore diet. The sushi chef refused I have never had a practically empty place refuse such a simple request. I will probably not return. read more

The food quality here was impeccable! You can rely on Bui Sushi for fresh, great tasting sushi. It's somewhere you feel great after eating (aka not in a food coma for hours). As for a post beach lunch spot, it's the place to be. The only reason for 4/5 stars is due to the service. Unfortunately our waters were empty during the majority of our meal and both my friend and I were quite thirsty having been we were just at the beach. ah Bui, my favorite sushi in the BU, actually in all of LA. Why? Because they are willing to always make my favorite vegetarian sushi even though it isn't technically on the menu. That is why they have won my loyalty. N loves their salmon avocado and other rolls. But for me, it is all about the sweet potato tempura roll or the avocado. But seriously, sweet potato sushi has been my go-to since my days of living in NY and shockingly it is not on the menu at these west coast establishments. My latest genius idea is to combine the two into one perfect roll: the sweet potato tempura avocado roll. They should add it to their menu. They can call it the Cyrus roll. They have been sweet enough to make this everytime I ask whether I dine-in, eat at the bar or take it to go. Now if I could get them to also add my other favorite (honey roasted peanut avocado roll) we would know where I would go weekly. Not a lot of sushi spots in this area of Malibu although I wish there was. This spot is located in a large shopping center with plenty of parking. Service was really friendly and great, and they offer soy paper vs seaweed for every roll if you don't love the chewy texture of seaweed with the rice.
