After a long weekend of hiking and mountain climbing in the Adirondacks, we stopped to eat on our way home. Fantastic meals for all 4 of us! French fries were the best we've ever had! Steak was very good! My son had a burger and loved it, my other son had chicken tenders and they were the biggest he's ever had and delicious! I had turkey club and it was delicious and huge! And again, the fries were AMAZING! Dessert also was well worth it, sundaes were huge and cheesecake was yummy! Waitress was very attentive and nice, and the owner sat us and greeted us at the door. Nothing fancy, but that's ok. Sometimes you just want comfort food. Stopped in today after driving around the region enjoying the views. Despite there being a decent number of people eating in, it never seemed loud. We were able to relax for an hour or so next to the indoor fire pit. Adds a nice touch to the atmosphere. Two thumbs up on the chicken riggies!!! So yummy. Tip: They'll ask how spicy you want the riggies. If you like spice, just go right for hot. Medium was not particularly spicy. Review from the others members of my party - turkey sandwich is delicious, cannot go wrong with the steak, decent Utica greens but not my favorite. Some of the other reviews here are unfortunate, but we had a good time with regards to interaction with the staff. The service was great, and our waitress was up front with us about the fact that the kitchen was a little slow. She made sure to bring out our salads, then our greens, timed so that it wouldn't feel like a long wait for entrees. If in the area and needing a easy dinner option, this is it. We enjoyed our dinner because it was relaxing and in a winter-lodge type atmosphere. The owner was at the entry desk and was friendly. Besides paying your check, you can buy drill bits and gloves at the desk! Inside, there was a new wood-plank ceiling and pretty candle-light fixtures, which matched the ambience of the central fire. At one end of the peaked room was a taxidermy buffalo head. On the way to the restrooms, there was a lit christmas tree and an old-fashioned electric fireplace that reminded us of yesteryear. Above that was a snarling bear head. Adjacent to the restrooms was a picture-frame made from a 3-seater outhouse bench! So, the atmosphere was pleasing. The prices were a bit high like everywhere, but the menu choices were adequate. We had the turkey dinner and the mushroom-spinach linguini. The meals came with warm rolls with two kinds of flavored butter, and small fresh salads. Unfortunately, there were moments of off-smells and tastes in the air and in the butters. The place is old and I think some of the old wood needs to be sealed up. I liked my linguini but the portion was definitely woman-sized with no leftovers. The turkey was just sliced deli-meat and the stuffing had some chewy blobs that could not be eaten. However, the gravy and potatoes were good and everything except the blob was consumed in full. We ended with a piece of carrot cake which was tasty but very small. There were good desert choices. Bottom line: we would go again, especially considering the area's other choices. We like the quirky ambience (but they need to fix the old smell) and were very comfortable here. The owner is nice and has shown good judgement in fixing the place...he just needs to keep going. BTW, there is also a large full bar here. Compared to Garramones (ceiling falling down, dark, no windows), Campbells (spare, diner-like), Ohio Tavern (loud, cramped, inefficient, too long for everything) and Kratzy's (biker place) nearby...this one suits us best. Spent the day in Old Forge, wife and daughter wanted to eat at the Buffalo Head on the way home. First sign of impending trouble was the lack of vehicles in their parking lot. The inside of the building looks and SMELLS like 1950. A waiteress seated us and took our drink orders, came back with drinks and then took our dinner orders. She came back once again with some warm rolls and butter, and then left. There were no plates or anything, so we had to use our napkins as plates . When our food came out, it was a fellow that either managed or owned the place (I assume) that brought out two meals, then asked my 20 year old daughter "you didn't order anything?"...Ahhhh, YES! He went into the kitchen for a bit, then came out with her food. In the meantime, my wife bit into her scallops...ice cold! As well as the scoop of mashed potatoes on her plate....had to send those back for a warm up. Not to mention her side dish ( green beans) that had to be asked for three times before they were brought out. They were warm, but looked like they were fresh out of a can. The "garnish" on the plates was a sprinkle of iceberg lettuce... It was SUCH a disappointment, because I have been going there for 50 years, when my parents used to take me as a child. It was always a big deal when we went to the "Buffalo Head". The manager did apologize, it just seemed like the whole staff was not organized in any way. Our original waitress DID return when it was time to pay the bill, and said "Sorry, I was in the other room with another party".... 23 of us showed up for lunch when the Buffalohead restaurant opened. We ordered a wide variety of pasta dinners, salads, sandwiches, fish platters, and much more. It was all fantastic! I had always raved about how wonderful this was. It has the best food and the best service. Our family had dined at this restaurant several times over the years before it closed some years ago. This was our first time back since it reopened. It is nothing like it was. The Pan Seared scallops were 8 tiny bay scallops swimming in what I think was a garlic/butter sauce. Didn't taste the garlic nor the butter and they were chewy. I was expecting something different from the term "pan seared". The buttered kernel corn was like rubber. I think they were microwaved too long. Baked potato was half baked. My spouse order the fish basket. The battered fish "squares' had uncooked flour just under the top crust. And the French fries were warm at best. However, the fried cheese curds were very good! Needless to say, we will not be going back. Which is very sad. read more

Upon arrival we noticed the rather disheveled look of the property however they did some great advertising for Tom Hortons as there were several of those cups on the ground. When entering the building the musty odor was overwhelming but I really wanted a famous turkey dinner. While waiting to be seated the hostess was quite busy but the "bartender" and older unkempt gentleman at the register felt the need to tell her she needed to hurry up....repeatedly. When she returned to her station she was very sweet and nicely informed us that they were out of basically everything on the menu other than steaks and chicken wings. I hope the owners realize she is the only reason they received even 1 star at all. We have gone twice over the summer. This place has turned us off. The moment you enter there is the smell of wet, damp somewhere in the building. We believe the servers try their best. But we also have witnessed the owner leave people standing at the door waiting to be seated. He does nothing if help is needed except take your money when you are finished. Never again!!! read more

Faded Glory a once famous spot noted for great food now just a memory .My wife and I had business in area decide to go back to a favorite spot , it has had ups and downs open and closed reopen by new owner .Service was good I ordered the petite broiled scallop dinner with cape cod topping 16.99 four scallops , I know I ordered small portion but four scallops it was swimming in a dish looked like a orphans looking for help.My wife had a ham dinner with pineapple and raisin sauce sounds good right . Warm slices of ham with a few pieces of pineapple tippets no raisin or sauce. Salad and two dinner rolls . Passed on dessert we will miss this spot now as a memory and No I wont sign the song . I can't agree more with Alison S. The Buffalo Head is a must if you are ever even remotely near Forestport. Huge steaks cooked to perfection and a beautiful setting. My wife and I used to take a ride up to the Old Forge / Inlet area at least twice a year. Part of the trip was stopping at this location for dinner. The food was always wonderful and the place was clean, neat & orderly. For about ten years, we never made it back to the area due to a variety of reasons. Last Saturday (09/12/2020) we found ourselves back in Old Forge and on the way home stopped at the Buffalo Head Inn. Upon parking and walking up to the front door I commented to my wife how far downhill this place had gone. The entire front area of the building was dirty, overgrown, unkempt and just looked shabby. It was in need of a little paint & concrete repairs. Even if business is poor, I believe an owner should take pride and trim the bushes, paint the railings etc. We entered and the place had certainly gone downhill. The front entrance / counter area had piles of junk all over it.....dusty, dirty papers, old stuff for sale from the 1980's just all in a mess piled all over. We were greeted & seated at 5:00 PM. All staff was wearing masks, and the tables and chairs were clean and had been recently sanitized (smell). I had a beer and water and my wife just water. I ordered a strip steak ($23) and my wife chicken riggies ($16.50). We were served two green salads (smothered in salad dressing), I like it, but my wife could barely get it down (and didn't), my win. We each got a simple roll. Then our meals came out and OMG.... The chicken riggies "looked ok", but the steak was rare/rare/rare and I ordered medium.....the french fries appeared to have been left over from lunch and just dropped in the grease to "heat up" and serve and a small dish of corn (which was obviously left over....bare in mind its Fall corn season). I NEVER NEVER NEVER send anything back, I just bare with it (I was born and raised poor) so food is for eating. I politely sent the steak back and the waitress was nice and returned it to the kitchen. It came out several minutes later cooked medium with the exact same (twice cooked fries)... By this time my wife had dug into the chicken riggies and reported it tasted like over cooked paste and some kind of canned chicken (if there is such a thing)... I tested it out and nearly choked....yuke. I then began eating my steak and it was tough, full of fat and stringy (if that's possible). I choked down a few fries & some corn and eat both the rolls. I ate what I could of the steak and just left the rest....1/2 of the entire strip steak was fat and tough meat I could not eat period. My wife barely touched the chicken riggies and the waitress stopped by and said "would you like a box". I said, just the bill, I wanted out ASAP. The bill came and we thought this place is struggling and we should just pay and go, but my wife, the tougher of us two said, "no way, we aren't paying for the chicken". I called the waitress over and my wife showed that he plate had barely even been touched and said "this was terrible, please removed it from my bill". The polite waitress then got snippy and said," you should have told me before I wrote up the bill". I then stepped in and said, "I'm asking you now"...she walked off in a huff. She returned to the table a few minutes later and had removed the chicken from the bill by drawing a line through it and slapped it on the table and walked away. Lucky, I had cash and we paid the altered bill and reduced the waitress tip appropriately and left it on the table and left the business....NEVER TO RETURN. Of course this gave us something to re-hash for our ride home....ha ha ha. As soon as we returned to Syracuse, we stopped at out favorite pizza shop (Doc's Pizza, Camillus) and got a few slices and ate in the parking lot (social distanced)...ha ha ha. Just visited this past weekend feb2017. New menu and many improvements to the food. The stale rolls are gone and replaced with fresh bread, as are the instant mashed potatoes, they are real now. The Buffalo Head is more than just a restaurant tucked away in the Adirondacks--it's an institution! I've been going there for as long as I can remember whenever I pay a visit to the "North Country". It's a great place to stumble into after a day of cross-country skiing or snowmobiling. There's a giant stuffed head of a buffalo mounted on the wall of the front dining room, a large round fireplace in the center of the room, and more history than you can shake a stick at. The sirloin steak for one is ginormous. I don't know anyone who has actually finished it in one sitting while in the restaurant. I've been ordering the fried clam basket since I was, like, 5. I also recommend the hot turkey sandwich that comes smothered in gravy. You can't really go wrong with anything on their menu. The portions are plentiful and you'll always have some to take home. BONUS: If you sit on the front side of the restaurant, you may be lucky enough to see one of the Adirondack Railroad trains roll by. The place is also brimming with history. The Buffalo Head used to be an inn back during the logging days and was later converted to a restaurant. In fact, the original train depot is across the street. It's been closed for years now (there used to be a gift shop in there) and is rather dilapitated. Yet, it's still cool to look at and imagine what it would have been like 80 years prior. read more

Other than the past few COVID years, our family has been coming here on Easter Sunday for many, many years. This year will be our last. After waiting an hour to be seated for our reservation, it was just more waiting after that. For everything. Being Easter, they had a limited menu, which we were fine with other than there wasn't anything for the little, little kids. However, the waitress did come back with a plate of spaghetti for the smallest one. Our reservation was for 2 o'clock and they were already out of prime rib and chicken riggies, so most of us had turkey or roast beef dinners, which was cold. The mashed potatoes were absolutely tasteless, and I think the stuffing went through a blender. Waited too long for dessert and at this point, (after 3+ hours) we just wanted to leave, so I got up to ask the bartender for our check and told him we waited long enough and it was just ridiculous at this point, and what do you know, most of our desserts finally arrive except for 2 because they were out of cheesecake as well. The strawberry shortcake was a tasteless biscuit and dry strawberries and the apple pie ala mode with cheddar not only had no cheddar, but no ice cream either. The only plus to this meal were the salads, although we weren't given any bread like other diners. Normally, I'd say "yeah, they're busy, be patient," but that was NOT the case at all. The parking lot was empty when we arrived (bad sign) and there were at least 2 groups of families that got sick of waiting only to find out the limited menu now consisted of 3 entrees and got up and left. The busiest spot in the restaurant was inside the doorway where everyone stood and waited (some left) for someone to check them in, which I didn't see happen once. Sadly, I feel it's the end of an era for the Buffalo Head and that's a shame. read more

Just went to this restaurant and had an awful experience. To begin, our table and one of the chairs were not properly cleaned. They were even sticky. Next the Caesar salad came out and the dressing was sour. Following this our dinners came and the meat as well as gravy was cold. We decided we wanted to go elsewhere as opposed to have them reheat the food. When the waitress took our plates another one came out and told us they were going to pay for the food regardless. Then they brought us the bill and all three dinners that we did not eat were still on the bill. We took the bill to the front to speak with the owner. He told us we had to pay. We explained the issues and he said they would of reheated it and then we would of eaten it. You cannot reheat food with gravy on it. He argued with us more after we offered to pay for the drinks and even salads that we barely touched. Next he tried to bargain with us and tell us we had to cover food costs. We ended up paying $25 of the $60 bill. However he was absolutely nasty. While ringing us up my wife mentioned giving a bad review on yelp and he said well maybe I should charge you full price if your going to ruin me. He was threatening us. This rating is based solely on our most recent visit this month. We have been going to the Buffalo Head for over 40 years and it has been one of our favorite places. We have always have had excellent home cooked meals in huge portions with great service. Well, on our most recent visit we got 2 of those 3 - great service and huge portions. But, the food was down a notch. The duck was average, there were no brownies in the brownie sundae dessert, the "whipped cream" on the banana cream pie did not seem to be of "homemade quality", and there were some other quality issues. The food was all good, it just wasn't the great food we are used to having there. I am going to chalk this one up to timing (we ate at about 1:30pm on a weekday) and an off day. We will go back and hope things return to the old standards next time. read more

I had the Pork with Apples and could not eat only a few bites of it. The pork came with a topping that was suppose to be apples. It was loaded with a topping like an apple pie ground up. Cheddar cheese on top of that. There was so much cinnamon and nutmeg in this mixture you could not taste apples or pork at all. My husband had a thin 8 oz filet steak, mashed potatoes and cup of soup. It came on a piece of toast. He said it was good and tender. That cost $24.00. The wedding soup was heavily salted. Longer Version: My husband, three children, and a friend of the family and I all stopped at the Buffalo Head restaurant in Forestport, NY on the way home from vacation in Old Forge (where we've been going every summer for 12 years now). We had stopped there twice before many years ago, when we first began this summer tradition, and remembered that our experience had been decent enough, so we decided to visit again this July (2011). This was the mistake that nearly ruined the entire vacation. When we arrived around 7:45pm we were happy to see that the place was nearly empty. We assumed this would mean a reasonable wait between ordering and receiving our food, but this was not the case -- the time between ordering and receiving our entrees was about 45 minutes. Despite the fact that we were displeased with the appetizers, served unsalted cooking butter with our rolls for some reason, received unreasonably tiny, brownish, wilted salads all but drowned in dressing, and sat for nearly an hour waiting for our food, we didn't complain this entire time about anything (except my husband asked for a replacement salad). We were still biting our tongues once our entrees finally came, determined to enjoy the rest of our trip. Right then, the waitress stopped by and said "how is everything?" and my husband replied "not too great, to be honest - the second salad wasn't any better so I just gave up on it" and I added "it seems like nothing here has any salt - the nachos and the butter that came with the rolls were both so bland". At this point, at any real restaurant, the waitress would apologize and then see about making us happy, either with an offer of bringing us regular butter and more rolls, or perhaps getting a manager, or at least saying "I'm so sorry you aren't happy with our food". But this waitress burst out laughing, and said "are you serious?" I looked at my husband with disbelief and he looked at her and said "I'm not joking with you. I don't understand what's so funny here. Is there someone else I can talk to, like a manager or supervisor or something?" In response, the waitress laughed so hard that she bent over in half and slapped her knee, then managed to spit out "Well you're just going to have to suck it up!" We asked for a check for what we ate, then stormed out. My husband stopped to talk to the manager, who told the waitress to "let it go" when the waitress snidely asked if she should write up a bill. Nonetheless, some woman followed my husband outside yelling at him that "if you want a free meal, go to Burger King!" I have no idea what she had to do with anything, as she was nowhere during the fiasco inside. My husband calmly replied that had we been trying to scam them for a free meal, we would have actually EATEN IT!! So, the service is horrible. The people who frequent the place are horrible. The food is overpriced for how tasteless, tiny proportioned, and poor quality it is, and there is absolutely no way any health-conscious person would be able to bring themselves to eat such things, based on our observation of the fact that everything is swimming in unsalted melted butter grease. But if you don't mind being laughed at, yelled at, and told to "Suck it up!" as a paying customer, by all means go to the Buffalo Head restaurant, in Forestport, NY. read more

Its got it all - great Adirondack charm, a scenic railroad running right through its side yard and food that never disappoints. If you want to head out to a restaurant that has good down-home food served in massive proportions, this is most definitely it. I had the roast beef and gravy and my mom had the pork and gravy and we were filled to the brim. Don't come without a good appetite ~ I hear the desserts are excellent, but had no room to try them (next time for sure!). All waas served graciously by our attentive waitress. I want to say that on all my travels through New York, this has become one of the best restaurants I have ever ate at. The blonde petite waitress was so friendly and accommodating. The server, whom I think was named Evan was just as pleasant as can be and also so accommodating to my families needs.. The food was outstanding with large portions and fresh rolls and salad. I can't brag enough about the clam chowder, the best I have ever eaten and I ate a lot of clam chowder in my time. I have to say that I will stop there again and again while passing through New York. It was absolutely amazing. You couldn't find nicer workers and better food in my eyes. So I thank you all for one of the best meals and service that I have experienced in my life.
