Good food, but a bit pricey for the ambiance, but all in all, this long-standing pillar of the ADK cullenery community is a fun spot to stop by for a good steak (love the NY strip). The staff is great, and I've never had an out-of-temp cut of meat. I'd say the only reason I only rate it four stars is that the price point really outpaces the presentation and it's not all about the deco, it's the care that goes into the plate being set before a customer. The service was excellent but that's all. We ordered three different steaks and all of them were dry and not seasoned properly. It was so bad that it just tasted like a charred chunk of meat. It was edible but for the outrageous price that they put on this steak I would think they would be able to make a good steak for you. We ordered two alcoholic beverages and they had so much alcohol in them we couldn't drink all of it. It's a nice place don't get me wrong, they even had buffalo china plates! It was an unplanned dinner with former co-workers as we were there to pay our respects to a friend. Tuesday is roast turkey dinner night and the five of us all ordered it . All of us enjoyed it and agreed it was our Thanksgiving. It was not deli meat it was turkey that we would cook at home for the holidays. Moist and juicy along with mashed potatoes. dressing and cranberry sauce. Gravy was good and a small salad was also included with fresh rolls. We did feel bad that this was a steak house and we were eating turkey but next time, and there will be a next time, we will try a steak. Waitstaff were excellent. read more

Went here for the first time after coming to Old Forge for over 30 years. A wonderful hidden gem! The decor is quaint and cozy. The staff were all very friendly, attentive, and accommodating! I had the filet mignon, which was HUGE and cooked to perfection! The chicken and biscuits was delicious! The seafood platter was just right! The au gratin potatoes were unique and delicious. The deserts were very tasty as well. The only issue was that the scallops were a tad overcooked, and the au gratin sauce was a little salty. My brother, sister and I stopped in for prime rib. Service was friendly and fast. Prime rib was very good; Medium-rare was pink edge to edge. Just the right amount of fat. A really good, crispy baked potato is perfect with prime rib. But Steak House uses foil-wrapped potatoes, which are then just "steamed" in the wrap in the oven. Soggy potatoes are just a bummer. This is such an easy fix; Just scrub the potatoes, let them dry, brush with oil and sprinkle with kosher salt. Bake. Foil-wrapped potatoes are the stuff of Golden Corral. I had the French fries instead. They seemed home cut but were soggy. My siblings had the twice-baked potatoes, which seemed to be yesterday's unsold baked potatoes, dressed up. I asked the waitress if any of the salad dressings were house-made. "No." This means that Italian dressing is the golden, thick goo sold by Sysco. It takes so little time to mix up a house-dressing. And, it's cheaper for the restaurant, too. I had oil and vinegar. Dinner came with rolls which were obviously brought in, and not house made. Why not mix up a batch of buttermilk biscuits? I would not eat there again. $28 for a good prime rib but the sides were a mere afterthought that detracted from the rib. Too much money for a forgettable meal. read more

Just finished a great meal at the Steak House in Thendara, NY. We had the bone-in ribeye. Ordered it medium well. Was done perfectly. Tasted amazing. Absolutely DISGUSTING, we had to get pizza at Fast-Trac after our "dinner." As we were being seated, two other parties had complaints about their food, and after the skimpy salads and old dry rolls, it was pretty apparent as to why. Our steaks finally came out, and I almost couldn't swallow my first bite. They had absolutely no seasoning or flavor, because "people flavor their steaks to mask poor quality" according to Ryan, the unprofessional manager. He then asked "are you guys from downstate?" First off..if you like steak..this is the place for you in lil ol, Old Forge! As soon as we walked in the door i started salivating from the aroma. Every person we interacted with was passionate about the place. It was high season so we had to wait a bit at the bar. I thought we were dealing with just a bar tender, but i found out later he was an owner. Our drinks were flawless. Before he got to making our drinks, a woman who i thought was a waitress came up and was really aggrivated because her tables drinks were not ready. (It was packed so that should be expected) My wife and i said that we were not in any hurry and to make the other drinks first. In my mind the "waitress" may have been the owners wife and she was just trying to make sure the table she was working with was happy, i may be way off here...However the bottom line here is that this place was phenomenal, and the staff is passionate about making sure their customers are happy. If you're a meat eater and staying in this town then you need to come here! read more

This is one of the best steakhouses I've ever been to. My husband and I came here to celebrate our recant wedding. The service is a bit on the slow side due to labor shortage ( no fault of the business ) so keep that in mind. Food was excellent, steak was very flavorful and perfectly done, prime rib was melt in your mouth tender ( got a bit jealous of my hubby on that one). An interesting experience...so heres a list of moments... 1) Service could not have been slower...it got to the point where the table next to us got up and got there own drinks...hardcore! Wait for drink and food was insane! 2) The floor was covered lettuce, crackers, and straw wrappers. Not sure if they had cleaned it yet that week...yikes 3) The waitress spilt salad dressing on herself and had an emotional moment that was overly dramatic yet sadly entertaining...she even said that because of her actions "this would be her last day..."---her words! 4) Assuming she got fired or something, they sent in another waitress. Yes, there was a "tag out" 5) Me and my gf ordered a Sirloin for two, and they brought out a small filet...after 5 min of waiting for our waitress to come back out, we told her, and she took it back. Crazy part-- i watched her bring it to another table...from my table to theirs...no way!!!!! They get 2 stars because the sirloin (that i eventually got) was decent! The parking lot was packed, there were a bunch of people waiting and we were told it would be about a 30-45 minute wait. No problem. Once we were seated things seemed to progress as they should. Our drinks came out, 2 rolls and our salads. The rolls seemed to be ciabatta bread. I happen to love cibatta bread - for sandwiches, not to munch on. That's ok though. Salads were a typical restaurant small salad - nothing to write home about. Our table was cleared and we waited for our meals: I chose the prime rib. My fiancé got the filet with shrimp scampi. As more and more time passed we wondered what the issue was. It's fine, we just waited. Our server stopped at the table and informed us that our tables ticket was lost and our meals would be done as quickly as possible. We continued to wait. We sat at our table for 1 HOUR AND 15 MINUTES before our food was set in front of us. As a courtesy, she offered us a half off discount. My fiancé requested to speak to a manager to see if (1) he knew what even happened and (2) could he do better with the compensation. At that time he came over and advised he had no idea what happened with the ticket but would be happy to "take care of us." I asked if he would be able to do better than half off. He explained that he "is in the business to make money, not give away free food." I was appalled. Obviously making a profit is a priority; HOWEVER, sometimes you need to take a loss - especially in the interest of RETAINING patrons. He went on about how the process of a meal coming out goes. I'm 40 years old, I've been to restaurants - I know the drill. "Things are slower here and the business is seasonal." Uh, have you been to Walt's diner? We were in the mood for steak and had taken the train at Thendara and decided to drop by. My first impression was that locals linger here,as there were a few tables who did not require menus and ordered immediately. I have to agree with other review that stated the chairs and tables seemed cheap but over all I was comfortable. Our server was very efficient and the orders were exactly as we had asked for. The onion soup is a warm fuzzy for me and fit the bill. The steaks were surprisingly good..I say surprisingly as the decor led me to believe that my food would be sub par.. My family decided to go there because it was the only place around that we saw was open on Tuesdays, what a mistake that was. The only thing I could of the entire time I was there, is that this restaurant belongs on an episode of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. By far the worst food I've ever had while eating at a restaurant. We could see the chefs as they were cooking, and only one of the men had a beard net on even though they both have large beards, while the other was eating fries while he was cooking. Neither were wearing hair nets. The food is extremely overpriced for what you get. Their warm turkey sandwich is about $13 and it's only turkey in bread, drenched in gravy. The bread gets soggy very fast, and is nasty to try and eat. Their $23 shrimp scampi is extremely plain, there's no pasta involved, and it was flavored with only butter and garlic. I even ordered the $10 scampi appetizer, but they automatically made it the more expensive meal. For 3 of us to eat there it was over $60, with us trying to get some of the cheapest stuff on the menu, and the food quality is nowhere near that price. They tax if you pay with a credit card, so if you do go make sure you have enough cash to pay for everyone. read more

Please don't stop here. I think the only reason this place stays in business is their good tourist trap location - right on 28 as you're heading out of Old Forge...one of the first restaurants outside of the main village. Our group was 5 adults and 8 kids, coming back from Water Safari, of course. The waitstaff did not hide their displeasure upon our entrance. At first, they wanted to break up our seating over 2 tables, even though there were 2 long tables already pre-arranged for larger groups. We finally managed to be seated together, and it wasn't tight, it was just fine. While the 'back' waitress was pleasant and available, our main waitress was curt and unfriendly. She missed half the kids' drink orders, and had to be asked to take the rest of them. She brought out rolls and a bowl of ICE cold butter packets. So bad. The kids menu was ok, but you can't get a grilled cheese. She had to ask if it could be done, then reported back they cannot do it! How basic is a grilled cheese? Sorry, but your restaurant has problems if you can't slap some bread, cheese, and butter together and price it like any other kids menu item. I can't speak for the other adult entrees, but my chicken was over salted, and my twice baked potato was very overcooked, and looked like it had been nuked. I called it a quadruple baked. No one raved that their meal was 'good'. Everything was just passable, and honestly, if we were not a large group trying to get a decent meal and get back on the road, I would have sent everything back and asked to speak with management about not only the quality, but the aloof service as well. My friend who was with us, who is also a professional chef, said everything she tasted was clearly a convenience/frozen product. Unlikely they made anything from scratch. Finally, the 'decor' is outdated and cheap, and felt a bit dank and dirty. Dirty old carpet on the floor, and pizzeria-style metal chairs. Nothing 'steak house' about this place. Fairly good experience. We received food well within reason and enjoyed the environment. Staff was friendly, prompt and personable. Another table was put off by the shared meal cost of $4, but the young server handled their questions/concerns professionally. While I was pleased with the food I received (queen Delmonico) it was frustrating to pay $7.99 for a serving of kraft Mac-n-cheese for my 6yr old (I could buy 8 boxes of it for that amount). I assumed that it was going to be a homemade recipe for that price. Steak was cooked perfectly as ordered (I ordered rare and my wife ordered medium) and portion sizes were on point. The Steak House is located in southern Old Forge / northern Thendara. On the surface the restaurant appears to be a classic (see 1970's era) steakhouse where one would expect to have a good drink along with an excellent steak in an atmosphere unchanged with the times. Unfortunately, out visit was far from the experience we hoped for. Although there were tables available, the waitstaff was very overextended. Wait time from the door to a table was 20 minutes. Time from table to drinks, add 10 minutes. Drinks to appetizers, add 20 minutes. Appetizers to main course, add 60 minutes. My family (husband, wife, two kids) ordered a variety of food. The kids plates were 'ok' with the small strip steak being the better plate of the evening (!). The children's macaroni and cheese was old and boxed kraft with the refrigerator-like state that parents are familiar with. My wife and I split the "sirloin for two". The meals showed up after much consideration of asking for a cash out while waiting... which I did, but the food was on the grill. The sirloin for two is a three inch thick slab of a decent cut of meat but not cooked in the correct manner for such a good, thick cut. Ordered medium rare. The steak arrived with sear marks and a suitably cooked exterior, however the inside 2" was completely raw and cold. (We are rare steak cookers and eaters... but, pro-tip: order medium rare when youdon't know the restaurant... this was actually raw.). Seemingly no salt or pepper to season the steak and, overall, other than raw meat... the steak had no developed flavor. We both ate a few bites of the steak and sadly tossed the rest. Baked potato was unremarkable. The salad was low end chain-restaurant quality. The rolls were good. We will certainly not return. read more

3.5 stars - a good find for the first night of being in town for our honeymoon - we were both famished and I was a little shaky to be honest. Plus, we both looked like we just got finished with a 10.5 hour drive and were certainly not wearing our Sunday best. Pretty much standard as far as old school, up north steak places go - decent wine list and a full bar, wood panelling, lots of retirees and I'm sure the place gets packed in season (we were up just after Labor Day). Food was good, I got a basic fish and chips and the wife got scallops. It was definitely a bit on the pricey side, but the service was good, they had a decent wine list, and I felt a whole lot better when we left. Our favorite restaurant in Old Forge was closed so we stopped here. Our server was very friendly and my daughter liked her haddock. Unfortunately, the entrees are overpriced. They don't include vegetables and the only choice of a starch is potato or potato. Our steaks were hardly seasoned and the chicken breast was tiny and dry. I also question how chicken parmigiana can be on the menu , but not pasta. I get that it might be typical food for the area but it's way overpriced. read more

Hi, Charlie. There's a giant iconic bull that sits on the corner of Rts. 365 and 31 in Verona, NY, just down the road from the Turning Stone Casino. Perhaps you're familiar with it. The bull sits there long after a fire destroyed the Stampede Steak House & Saloon a few years back. It looks lonesome without a restaurant to keep it company. Not sure if it's for sale, but am wondering if you ever thought of acquiring it. Or, if any of your imaginative customers have ever suggested same. In keeping with your fine steak house, I can envision it standing there on the north side of your property (parking lot) facing the Old Forge business district. What an iconic landmark that would be, the Steak House equivalent of what the fabled Paul Bunyan statue is to Water Safari (formerly Enchanted Forest). Not that your restaurant needed it, as its a local landmark all by its naked self. But still. Besides, if anyone driving south again missed the sharp turn, careening off the road toward unsuspecting diners in your eatery, the bull would make a handy safety buffer. And that's no bull, eh? The zoning board might even buy that argument. Anyway, that's one man's fantasy. Think about it every time I drive-by. Had to get it off my chest. Having a 3 season cottage on Otter Lake, the wife and I have enjoyed your no frills menu, modest prices and tasty meals for years . . . and that's no bull either.
