Where to start?! Well, the food was great, and the drinks were great, and the service was great,…read moreso... not much else to say! I'm just kidding, I always have more to say. ;) But, in fairness, it's a great little spot that's kind of tucked away about a block and a half off the main strip (College Blvd or whatever it's called). But, it's a hidden gem worth searching for! We were made aware of this place thanks to the kind woman working at our hotel. We were in town for a game at Lambeau, and we heard that there was a shuttle from Rookie's to the field, which we definitely wanted to make use of! (That's a whole other review, but let's just say, it was an experience I'll never forget, and one I would repeat in a heartbeat!) The crowd here was clearly Packers fans. But, in their defense, they didn't make us opposing team fans feel threatened or not welcomed. Quite the opposite! Once they realized we were going to be respectful of their place and their folks, they welcomed us! The food really is good, especially for the money. It's one of those rare inexpensive places left in this country, where a pretzel appetizer easily feeds a family of four! LOL! I wish there weren't just two of us, because we also ordered boneless wings and cheese curds! Everything was hot and fresh, and it all tasted great. The drinks were large, inexpensive, and cold. No complaints at all. The service was also really wonderful, with friendly staff and very efficient servers. Like I said, nobody gave us a lot of grief for being from out of town. But, we could tell right away, this was a "local spot" and for a very good reason. Locals and regulars definitely make up the customer base, but they keep coming back for all the other reasons provided: good food, good drinks, and very reasonable prices. Example: I offered to buy a beverage for a very nice person who was incredibly helpful to us, specifically in arranging our spots on the shuttle bus. She was drinking a rail Old Fashioned. You know what that cost me? $3.50. That's not a South Park reference. That was what I paid for a rail cocktail! Anyway... if I'm ever in Appleton again, I'm stopping by. This really is a diamond in the rough, and one well worth your time in searching for.

I had high hopes for Tanner's based on google and yelp reviews. I found my experience to err on the…read moreinteresting side as the dishes I ordered were unexpected. The roasted Brussel sprouts were covered, literally smothered in bacon bits and feta. The sprouts were fried beyond crispy. If you like your sprouts super charred and buried under bacon, this dish is for you. I, however, would have preferred my sprouts less burnt and far less toppings. The French dip was shockingly NOT a salt bomb - which was a pleasant surprise. It's the first time I've had a French dip where I actually wanted to dip it in the side of au jus to give it a flavor bump. The real gem is Tanner's amazing selection of sides to choose from - you can swap in a twice baked potato, kettle chips with French onion dip, steamed broccoli, grilled asparagus or potato salad! Any other place would up-charge but Tanner's doesn't. I chose grilled asparagus and appreciated the separate packaging so the sandwich didn't get soggy. I would come back and try other dishes as the menu is quite large.

Waverly Beach: Wisconsin Lake Life with Miami Tiki-Bar Energy…read more This place caught me completely off guard~in the BEST way. Coming back to the Fox Valley for my high school reunion, I expected to revisit some familiar territory. What I didn't expect was to find a lakefront destination that felt like a little slice of Miami dropped into Neenah. Waverly Beach Bar & Grille is a vibe. The outdoor patio and tiki bar are easily the biggest draw for me. Boats pulling up, drinks flowing, the water stretching out in front of you and that nighttime moon reflecting across the Ocean (MidWestern lake)~it legitimately gives you that "Am I still in Wisconsin?" feeling. The photos don't really do the location justice. Inside, there's plenty of space and a cool atmosphere that would translate extremely well for birthdays, reunions, private parties and other events. Then there's the staff. Michelle, Dakota, Jason & David--THANK YOU! We were there for our reunion and the service was phenomenal. Everyone brought positive energy, which unfortunately isn't something you can take for granted in the hospitality industry these days. Food~wise, I sampled the buffet and enjoyed the tacos. And as someone who loves exploring craft beer, having Spotted Cow on draft all night definitely made me happy. That said, I feel like I only scratched the surface here. The verdict: Waverly Beach isn't just somewhere to grab a drink. It's a destination. I'm coming back because I need to properly explore the food, beer selection and, most importantly that cute bartender they were calling Ms. Jackson (In my OutKast voice~IYKYK), & spend more time on that patio. My next business trip out there is in like 11 days, so I'll definitely stop in for the Brews.Views. & Food! Brews. Views. Food. Wisconsin ocean front property life. That's a combination I can get behind.

Boats pull up to the sandbar, people swim in to grab food and drinks, and the atmosphere is lively and fun. When we visited, there was a live band playing and they had a Brewers game special: two 22-ounce Miller Lites for just $7. I honestly think this place is bigger than anything similar in the Milwaukee area. Whether you're looking for a casual day on the water, a large party venue, or even a wedding location, Waverly Beach has the space and setting to handle it. Definitely worth checking out!

I Came Back to Appleton... Wisconsin Immediately Fed Me…read more There are many ways to kick off an HS Reunion weekend. Apparently, the correct Wisconsin way is cheese curds, a soft pretzel, beer cheese, mustard, and craft beer. One of my host~family sisters and longtime friends brought me to Stone Arch Brewpub shortly after I touched down in Appleton, and this was exactly the kind of welcome~back I needed. Let's talk about those cheese curds. Pillowy. Soft. Tender. Ridiculously good. I don't say this lightly, but these may be some of the best cheese curds I've ever eaten. Then came the pretzel~super buttery and incredibly soft~with Wisconsin beer cheese and mustard for dipping. At that point, the reunion could have ended and I would've considered the trip successful. But we weren't done. We worked our way through an assortment of craft beers spanning Hazy IPAs, West Coast IPAs, Sours and Gose~style beers. The atmosphere was cool, the service was great, and the combination of food, beer and catching up with an old friend made this feel like the perfect beginning to my return to Appleton. Sometimes the best travel experiences aren't about finding the newest or trendiest place. Sometimes it's about sitting down with someone who knows you, sharing some great food and beer, and realizing some things really do feel like coming home. Stone Arch was a damn good way to start the reunion. Would absolutely return.

Both were served fresh and hot. The buns seemed to be bakery made instead of commercial, and they had gluten free available if you needed it. The noise level can get a bit loud in the weekends when there is live music, but tonight was quiet. We were able to have a normal volume discussion. Our waitress was very sweet, but it would have been nice if she would have written down our orders. Our first round of beverages was incorrect. Mine seemed to be missing the amaretto and my husband's was mixed with diet. The restaurant was not busy this evening, five servers for about 6 groups, but it took almost 15 minutes for our beverages to arrive. Second round was free (double bubble) and these were mixed well. Overall, good food, average service. If a group of friends wanted to go out, I would join them, but probably would not make this a destination when there are so many other amazing options.
